Modeling And Analysis Of The Electrokinetic Mass Transport And Adsorption Mechanisms Of A Charged Adsorbate In Capillary Electrochromatography Systems Employing Charged Nonporous Adsorbent Particles, B. A. Grimes, Athanasios I. Liapis
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Mass-transfer systems based on electrokinetic phenomena (i.e., capillary electrochromatography (CEC)) have shown practical potential for becoming powerful separation methods for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. A dynamic mathematical model, consisting of the momentum balance and the Poisson equations, as well as the unsteady-state continuity expressions for the cation and anion of the background electrolyte and of a positively charged analyte (adsorbate), is constructed and solved to determine quantitatively the electroosmotic velocity, the electrostatic potential, the concentration profiles of the charged species in the double layer and in the electroneutral core region of the fluid in the interstitial channels for bulk …

Tilted Bilayer Membranes As Simple Transmission Quarter-Wave Retardation Plates, R. M.A. Azzam, Fadi A. Mahmoud
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
A tilted bilayer membrane, which consists of two thin films of transparent optically isotropic materials of different refractive indices, can function as a transmission quarter-wave retarder (QWR) at a high angle of incidence. A specific design using a cryolite-Si membrane in the infrared is presented, and its tolerances to small shifts of wavelength, incidence angle, and film thickness errors are discussed. Some designs provide a dual QWR in transmission and reflection. Such devices provide simple linear-to-circular (and circular-to-linear) polarization transformers. Bilayer eighth-wave retarders without diattenuation are also introduced.

Measurement Of The Top Quark Mass With The Collider Detector At Fermilab, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
This report describes a measurement of the top quark mass in pp̅ collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data sample was collected with the CDF detector during the 1992–1995 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 106 pb-1. Candidate tt̅ events in the ‘‘lepton+jets’’ decay channel provide our most precise measurement of the top quark mass. For each event a top quark mass is determined by using energy and momentum constraints on the production of the tt̅ pair and its subsequent decay. A likelihood fit to the …

Refined Kinematics Of The Eastern California Shear Zone From Gps Observations, 1993-1998, M. Meghan Miller, Daniel J. Johnson, Timothy H. Dixon, Roy K. Dokka
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Global Positioning System (GPS) results from networks spanning the Eastern California shear zone and adjacent Sierra Nevada block, occupied annually between 1993 and 1998, constrain plate margin kinematics. We use an elastic block model to relate GPS station velocities to long-term fault slip rate estimates. The model accounts for elastic strain accumulation on the San Andreas fault, as well as faults of the Eastern California shear zone. South of the Garlock fault, 14 mm/yr of dextral shear is distributed across the Eastern California shear zone. Some of this slip penetrates eastward into the Basin and Range, and a collective budget …
Appreciating The Beauty Of Earth, Jame Schaefer
Appreciating The Beauty Of Earth, Jame Schaefer
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Categories used by contemporary environmental philosophers to explore esthetic appreciation for the beauty of the physical world have parallels in reflections by patristic and medieval theologians on the beauty of God's creation, A sampling of the theologians' notions yields a promising foundation for ecological ethics from a theistic perspective, especially when understood from their world view at the time the text was written, reformulated to reflect broad scientific findings about the world today, and worked creatively to identify norms for human behavior.

Ionizing Radiation Exposure Of Workers In Medicine And Industry Assessment Of The Present Radiation Safety Program In Dubai And Propositions To Its Upgrading, Najib Abdullah Al Haj Fadhlani
Theses
Many of the latest practices in the fields of medicine and industry in the United Arab Emirates involve the use of radioactive ionizing sources and equipment of ionizing radiation.
The radioactive sources are the materials, which produce nuclear radiation such as alpha, beta, gamma and neutron. These sources have important practical usefulness in the field of industry such as evaluating oil wells and tracing out corrosion of pipes and Concrete as well as in medicine for medical diagnosis and treating cancer. On the other hand, radiation has negative effects as in the case of radiation pollution or worker exposure to …

On-Road Remote Sensing Of Automobile Emissions In The Denver Area: Year 2, Sajal S. Pokharel, Gary A. Bishop, Donald H. Stedman
Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications
The University of Denver has completed the second year of a five-year remote sensing study in the Denver area. The remote sensor used in this study is capable of measuring the ratios of CO, HC and NO to CO2 in motor vehicle exhaust. From these ratios, we calculate the percent concentrations of CO, CO2, HC and NO in the exhaust that would be observed by a tailpipe probe, corrected for water and excess oxygen not involved in combustion. Mass emissions per mass or volume of fuel can also be determined. The system used in this study was configured to determine …

Two-Dimensional Black Holes As Open Strings: A New Realization Of The Ads/Cft Correspondence, Mariano Cadoni, Marco Cavaglia
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We show that weak-coupled two-dimensional dilation gravity on anti-de Sitter space can be described by the dynamics of an open string. Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions for the string lead two different realizations of the anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory correspondence. In particular, in the Dirichlet case the thermodynamical entropy of two-dimensional black holes can be exactly reproduced by counting the string states.

Fully Differential Cusp Electron Production Cross Sections For 75-Kev H₂⁺ + He Collisions, L. An, Kh Khayvat, Michael Schulz
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A kinematically complete experiment on single ionization for 75-keV H2+ + H e collisions was performed by measuring the fully momentum analyzed projectiles and recoil ions in coincidence. The electron momentum was deduced from momentum conservation. Clear signatures of the postcollision interaction between the outgoing projectiles and the electrons were observed in the momentum spectra of all collision products simultaneously.
Polarization Retention In Srbi2Ta2O9 Thin Films Investigated At Nanoscale, Alexei Gruverman, M. Tanaka
Polarization Retention In Srbi2Ta2O9 Thin Films Investigated At Nanoscale, Alexei Gruverman, M. Tanaka
Alexei Gruverman Publications
The nanoscale mechanism of retention behavior in SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) thin films has been investigated by means of piezoresponse scanning force microscopy. It has been found that SBT films with Pt electrodes (SBT/Pt) exhibit a strong dependence of retention characteristics upon domain polarity: positive domains with the polarization vector pointing to the bottom electrode exhibit excellent stability in sharp contrast to the negative domains which show poor retention. The backswitching of the negative domains proceeds via sidewise motion of the domain walls and shows a log-time dependence. The strong effect of the poling voltage parameters (duration …

Effects Of External Electric Field On The Interfacial Properties Of Weakly Dipolar Fluid, V. B. Warshavsky, T. V. Bykov, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
In the framework of modified mean-field density-functional theory, effects of a uniform electric field on the interfacial properties of a model dipolar fluid are studied. Both density and orientational order-parameter profiles of the planar vapor-liquid interface are obtained as a function of the field strength. For the dipolar fluids with reduced dipole moment μ0*0*E*/T*!1) can shift the surface tension by few percent. We also find that the electric field actually reduces the thermodynamical surface tension but enhances the mechanical surface tension at the equimolar dividing surface. To detect these field effects on …

Adsorption And Decomposition Of Nickelocene On Ag(100): A High-Resolution Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy And Temperature Programmed Desorption Study, D. L. Pugmire, C. M. Woodbridge, N. M. Boag, Marjorie Langell
Marjorie A. Langell Publications
Nickelocene adsorption and decomposition on the Ag(100) surface were studied with temperature programmed desorption and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. At monolayer coverages on the relatively inert Ag(100) surface at 175 K, nickelocene physisorbs molecularly, with its molecular axis perpendicular to the surface plane. Nickelocene begins decomposing to adsorbed cyclopentadienyl and nickel at 225 K. Molecular desorption is only observed from multilayer material, at 210 K, or from the first monolayer if adjacent surface sites for decomposition are not available. The cyclopentadienyl decomposes through disproportionation to cyclopentadiene, which desorbs, and adsorbed nickel and carbon fragments on the Ag(100) surface …

Results of a ground-based optical monitoring campaign on NGC 5548 in June 1998 are presented. The broad-band fluxes (U, B, V), and the spectrophotometric optical continuum flux Fλ (5100 Å) monotonically decreased in flux while the broad-band R and I fluxes and the integrated emission-line fluxes of Hα and Hβ remained constant to within 5% . On June 22, a short continuum flare was detected in the broad band fluxes. It had an amplitude of about ~18% and it lasted only ≈90 min. The broad band fluxes and the optical continuum Fλ (5100 Å) appear to …
Self-Organized Critical & Complex Adaptive Systems In A Simulated Manufacturing Environment, Kaine Gill
Self-Organized Critical & Complex Adaptive Systems In A Simulated Manufacturing Environment, Kaine Gill
Theses
The application of this thesis compares three different manufacturing theories, varying on resource allocation, to decide which performs best. Three Resource Allocation methods are analyzed including a static resource allocation method, a semidynamic resource allocation method, and a dynamic resource allocation method. The last methodology used in this thesis develops a resource allocation method intended to display complex behavior. A Base Case manufacturing simulation is developed to represent a static resource allocation system. A Theory of Constraints manufacturing model using the Theory of Constraints process represents a semi-dynamic resource allocation system. A Complex Adaptive System manufacturing model using autonomous agents …

Dynamic Performance Of A Static Synchronous Compensator With Energy Storage, Aysen Arsoy, Yilu Liu, Shen Chen, Zhiping Yang, Paul F. Ribeiro, Mariesa Crow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper discusses the integration of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) with an energy storage system in damping power oscillations. The performance of the STATCOM, a self-commutated solid-state voltage inverter, can be improved with the addition of energy storage. In this study, a 100 MJ SMES coil is connected to the voltage source inverter front-end of a STATCOM via a DC-DC chopper. The dynamics of real and reactive power responses of the integrated system to system oscillations are studied using an electromagnetic transient program PSCAD TM /EMTDC TM and the findings are presented. The results show that, depending on the …

Cryptanalysis Of A Digital Signature Scheme On Id-Based Key-Sharing Infrastructures, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
At ISW’99, Nishioka, Hanaoka and Imai proposed a digital signature scheme on ID-based key-sharing infrastructures. That signature scheme is claimed to be secure if the discrete logarithm problem is hard to solve. Two schemes (the ID-type and the random-type schemes) based on the linear scheme for the Key Predistribution Systems (KPS) and the discrete logarithm problem (DLP) were given. In this paper we show that those two schemes fail to meet the nonrepudiation requirement: with negligible amount of computation, a signature could be forged. For the ID-type signature scheme, any verifier could forge a signature to raise repudiation between that …

Cryptanalysis Of Two Sparse Polynomial Based Public Key Cryptosystems, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Willi Geiselmann, Claus Schnorr, Rainer Steinwandt, Hongjun Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The application of sparse polynomials in cryptography has been studied recently. A public key encryption scheme EnRoot [4] and an identification scheme SPIFI [1] based on sparse polynomials were proposed. In this paper, we show that both of them are insecure. The designers of SPIFI proposed the modified SPIFI [2] after Schnorr pointed out some weakness in its initial version. Unfortunately, the modified SPIFI is still insecure. The same holds for the generalization of EnRoot proposed in [2].
Computer Anxiety Levels Of Virginia Extension Personnel, Brenda L. Martin, Daisy L. Stewart, John Hillison
Computer Anxiety Levels Of Virginia Extension Personnel, Brenda L. Martin, Daisy L. Stewart, John Hillison
Journal of Extension
Virginia Cooperative Extension personnel were surveyed to determine their level of computer anxiety and the computer applications they used. A total of 402 persons completed Oetting's Computer Anxiety Scale and additional items. The use of step-wise regression determined that time spent using a computer, age, and years of employment were significant, but accounted for only 17% of the variance in anxiety. The results of this study provide information that will be useful to Extension educators in providing improved pre-service and in-service education for Extension personnel. These improvements can result in decreased anxiety in using computers and better service to clientele.
A Note On The Paper “Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: Notation, Classification, Models And Methods” By Brucker Et Al., Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck
A Note On The Paper “Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: Notation, Classification, Models And Methods” By Brucker Et Al., Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The great variety of project scheduling problems studied in the ever growing literature motivated the recent development of classification schemes. In a recent paper (European Journal of Operational Research 112 (1999) 3–41), Brucker et al. make the claim that, so far, no classification scheme exists which is compatible with what is commonly accepted in machine scheduling and introduce a new classification. In this note, we critically review major shortcomings of the suggested scheme which place heavy limitations on its potential use.

Phase-Locked Loop, Delay-Locked Loop, And Linear Decorrelating Detector For Asynchronous Multirate Ds-Cdma System, Sok-Kyu Lee
Dissertations
The performance of phase synchronization and code tracking of a digital phase-locked loop (PLL) and delay-locked loop (DLL), respectively, is investigated in wideband asynchronous multirate DS-CDMA system. Dynamic Partial Correlation (DPC) method is proposed to evaluate the autocorrelation and its power spectrum density (PSD) of the cross-correlated terms in the presence of multirate multiple access interference (MMAI) under additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) and fading channel environments. The steady-state probability density function (PDF) and variance of the phase estimator error and code tracking jitter is evaluated by solving the first-order Fokker-Planck equation.
Among many linear multiuser detectors which decouple the …
Comparison Of Optical Density, Total Cell Protein, And Number Of Viable Cells (Via Fluorescent Straining) As Measures Of Microbial Growth Kinetics In Suspended And Biofilm Cultures During Biodegradation Of Naphthalene, Jeong Seop Shim
Dissertations
Most studies on bacterial growth kinetics have been dependent on theoretical modeling with general biomass measurements using either dry weight or optical density (OD), without distinguishing live from dead bacteria or debris. As a result, there remains considerable uncertainty in reliably predicting rates of biodegradation for design of treatment processes for environmental pollutants.
This research focused on measurement of bacterial growth rates and activities in suspended cultures and biofilms using Pseudomonas putida (ATCC 17484) for biodegradation of naphthalene. As expected, the rates of biodegradation differed between suspended and immobilized cultures. A comparison was made of the impact of three biomass …
Numerical Stimulation Of Stress-Induced Crystallization Of Injection Molded Semicrystalline Thermoplastics, Jianxin Guo
Numerical Stimulation Of Stress-Induced Crystallization Of Injection Molded Semicrystalline Thermoplastics, Jianxin Guo
Dissertations
Injection molded semicrystalline plastic products exhibit variable morphology along their thickness directions. The processing conditions have a significant effect on the crystallinity distribution in the final parts. However, because of the lack of sound theoretical models for stress-induced crystallization kinetics in thermoplastics, simulations of the injection molding process of semicrystalline plastics with the consideration of stress-induced crystallization have been scarce.
A stress-induced crystallization model for semicrystalline plastics is proposed based on the theory that stress induced orientation of polymer chains increase the melting temperature of the plastics, and hence, the supercooling which is the driving force for crystallization. By assuming …

Empirical Model-Based Control For End Milling Process, Abdelmalak Salib
Dissertations
The main objective of this research is to develop an empirical model-based control mechanism to maintain a fine surface finish quality by maintaining on-line cutting force values. The proposed model has been developed to present the control model constraints, by varying the machining parameters to control the force output to be constant. To relate the surface finish and the cutting force in the end milling machining process, a design of experiment has been conducted to determine the effect of two different materials (aluminium and steel) and the machining parameters (feed rate, spindle speed) at a predefined depth of cut.

Electro-Magnetic Control Of Cylinder Wake, Zhihua Chen
Electro-Magnetic Control Of Cylinder Wake, Zhihua Chen
Dissertations
The objective of this dissertation is to develop open and closed-loop control algorithms for manipulating wake flows past a solid cylinder in an electrically low-conducting fluid (e.g. seawater). The intent is to avoid both vortex shedding and flow separation from the body. It is desired to reduce the mean drag significantly and prevent the lift from becoming non-zero at all times. This is achieved through the introduction of a Lorentz force in the azimuthal direction generated by an array of permanent magnets and electrodes located on the solid structure. The array of actuators offers the advantage of making the Lorentz …
Assessing The Economic Impact Of Aircraft Noise On Communities, Ithan B. Zimmer
Assessing The Economic Impact Of Aircraft Noise On Communities, Ithan B. Zimmer
Dissertations
The impact of aircraft noise on communities is complex and multi-dimensional. This matter cannot be resolved without careful analysis of a complex array of related problems and issues including the environment, the economy, and quality-of-life concerns of people living in proximity to airports or aircraft routes. The effects of community noise are widespread and varied. Impacts can include sleep and speech interference, activity interference, general annoyance, and property value decrease. In order to improve public policy and provide a foundation for additional research, it is imperative to establish the extent of a problem. Dollars are often the least common denominator …
