Review Of Integrated Physics And Calculus By Andrew F. Rex And Martin Jackson, Robert Fuller Mar 2001

Review Of Integrated Physics And Calculus By Andrew F. Rex And Martin Jackson, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Are you ready to try something that seems obvious and yet is innovative? If so, then maybe you are ready to teach a combined physics and calculus course. In fact, many of us who have been teaching calculus-based physics have always felt that we had to teach both physics and calculus, because our students seemed to be unable to do anything we thought they had learned to do in the prerequisite calculus course(s).

Now, at last, a courageous physicist and mathematician have worked together to create a combined physics and calculus textbook. Professors Rex and Jackson have written a textbook …

Computing The Shape Of The Image Of A Multi-Linear Mapping Is Possible But Computationally Intractable: Theorems, Raul A. Trejo, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2001

Computing The Shape Of The Image Of A Multi-Linear Mapping Is Possible But Computationally Intractable: Theorems, Raul A. Trejo, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In systems without inertia (or with negligible inertia), a change in the values of control variables x1,...,xn leads to the immediate change in the state z of the system. In more precise terms, for such systems, every component zi of the state vector z=(z1,...,zd) is a function of the control variables. When we know what state z we want to achieve, the natural question is: can we achieve this state, i.e., are there values of the control variables which lead to this very state?

The simplest possible functional dependence is described by linear functions. For such functions, the question of …

Fisheries Research Report No. 125 - A History Of Foreign Fishing Activities And Fishery-Independent Surveys Of The Demersal Finfish Resources In The Kimberley Region Of Western Australia, G Nowara, Stephen J. Newman Mar 2001

Fisheries Research Report No. 125 - A History Of Foreign Fishing Activities And Fishery-Independent Surveys Of The Demersal Finfish Resources In The Kimberley Region Of Western Australia, G Nowara, Stephen J. Newman

Fisheries Research Reports

The aim of this project was to collate all historical information regarding fishing activities relevant to the Northern Demersal Scalefish Fishery. Three primary sources of information were identified; foreign Taiwanese pair-trawl fishing activities; traditional Indonesian fishing activities; and fishery-independent (CSIRO) survey data.

The Taiwanese pair-trawl fishing catch and effort from 1980 to 1990 was concentrated into two main regions, the Broome area (120°-122°E) and the Holothuria Banks area (124°-126°E) in the north. The majority of trawls were undertaken in the mid-continental shelf region (60-100 m). The total catch of these vessels reached a peak of 4,394 tonnes in 1985. Effort …

Probabilistic Temporal Databases, I: Algebra, Alex Dekhtyar, Robert Ross, V. S. Subrahmanian Mar 2001

Probabilistic Temporal Databases, I: Algebra, Alex Dekhtyar, Robert Ross, V. S. Subrahmanian

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Dyreson and Snodgrass have drawn attention to the fact that in many temporal database applications, there is often uncertainty present about the start time of events, the end time of events, the duration of events, etc. When the granularity of time is small (e.g. milliseconds), a statement such as "Packet p was shipped sometime during the first 5 days of January, 1998" leads to a massive amount of uncertainty (5 X 24 X 60 X 60 X 1000) possibilities. As noted in [41], past attempts to deal with uncertainty in databases have been restricted to relatively small amounts of uncertainty …

Isotropy And Factorization In Reduced Witt Rings, Robert W. Fitzgerald Mar 2001

Isotropy And Factorization In Reduced Witt Rings, Robert W. Fitzgerald

Articles and Preprints

We consider reduced Witt rings of finite chain length. We show there is a bound, in terms of the chain length and maximal signature, on the dimension of anisotropic, totally indefinite forms. From this we get the ascending chain condition on principal ideals and hence factorization of forms into products of irreducible forms.

Determination Of The Pollutant Loads In The Kings River Near Berryville, Thomas S. Soerens, Marc A. Nelson Mar 2001

Determination Of The Pollutant Loads In The Kings River Near Berryville, Thomas S. Soerens, Marc A. Nelson

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

An automatic sampler and a U.S. Geological Swvey (USGS) gauging station were established in 1998 and water quality sampling was begun in 1999 on the Kings River near Benyville, Arkansas. Continuous stage and discharge measurements and frequent water quality sampling have been used to determine pollutant concentrations and loads in t11e river. In addition, ten samples were taken by Arkansas Water Resources Center (A WRC) concurrently with USGS samples in order to assess whether A WRC and USGS samples can be compared. This report presents the results from the sampling and analysis for January 1, I999 to December 31, 1999. …

Survivability Architecture For Workflow Management Systems, Jorge Cardoso, Zongwei Luo, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut

Kno.e.sis Publications

The survivability of critical infrastructure systems has been gaining increasing concern from the industry. The survivability research area addresses the issue of infrastructure systems that continues to provide pre-established service levels to users in the face of disorders and react to changes in the surrounding environment. Workflow management systems need to be survivable since they are used to support critical and sensitive business processes. They require a high level of dependability and should not allow process instances to be interrupted or aborted due to failures. Moreover, due to their sensitivity, business process should reflect any change in the environment. In …

Experience And The Potential For Expert Performance In The Future, Joseph A. Russo Mar 2001

Experience And The Potential For Expert Performance In The Future, Joseph A. Russo

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

The broad issue addressed in this paper is the effect of experience on an auditor's potential for expert performance in the future. The specific aspect of this issue examined is the effect field experience has on certain measures of an auditor's knowledge that can be used to anticipate changes in the level of that auditor's expertise in performing future tasks. The paper builds on extensive prior research by Russo to further expertise research in auditing in two ways. First, it extends previous findings from the realm of realized expertise in a current task to that of an auditor's potential for …

Why Unary And Binary Operations In Logic: General Result Motivated By Interval-Valued Logics, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, I. R. Goodman Mar 2001

Why Unary And Binary Operations In Logic: General Result Motivated By Interval-Valued Logics, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, I. R. Goodman

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditionally, in logic, only unary and binary operations are used as basic ones - e.g., "not", "and", "or" - while the only ternary (and higher order) operations are the operations which come from a combination of unary and binary ones. For the classical logic, with the binary set of truth values {0,1}, the possibility to express an arbitrary operation in terms of unary and binary ones is well known: it follows, e.g., from the well known possibility to express an arbitrary operation in DNF form. A similar representation result for [0,1]-based logic was proven in our previous paper. In this …

How To Make Sure That "~100" + 1 Is ~100 In Fuzzy Arithmetic: Solution And Its (Inevitable) Drawbacks, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Witold Pedrycz Mar 2001

How To Make Sure That "~100" + 1 Is ~100 In Fuzzy Arithmetic: Solution And Its (Inevitable) Drawbacks, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Witold Pedrycz

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

From the commonsense viewpoint, if a person who weighs around 100 kilograms gains one more kilogram, his weight is still around 100 kilograms. Alas, not so in traditional fuzzy arithmetic. In this paper, we propose a modification of fuzzy arithmetic which does have this property. We gain the desired property, but there is no free lunch, we have to lose two important properties of the traditional fuzzy arithmetic: first, addition is no longer always associative; second, addition is no longer always easily computable.
