Modeling And Analysis Of Social Networks, Robert S. Renfro Ii Dec 2001

Modeling And Analysis Of Social Networks, Robert S. Renfro Ii

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops new methods for the modeling and analysis of social networks. Social networks describe the complex relationships of individuals and groups in multiple overlapping contexts. Influence in a social network impacts behavior and decision making in every setting in which individuals participate. This study defines a methodology for modeling and analyzing this complex behavior using a Flow-Model representation. Multiple objectives in an influencing effort targeted at a social network are modeled using Goal Programming. Value Focused Thinking is applied to model influence and predict decisions based on the reaction of the psychological state of individuals to environmental stimuli. …

Ccd Photometry Of The Classic Second-Parameter Globular Clusters M3 And M13, Soo-Chang Rey, Suk-Jin Yoon, Young-Wook Lee, Brian Chaboyer, Ata Sarajedini Dec 2001

Ccd Photometry Of The Classic Second-Parameter Globular Clusters M3 And M13, Soo-Chang Rey, Suk-Jin Yoon, Young-Wook Lee, Brian Chaboyer, Ata Sarajedini

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present high-precision V, B-V color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for the classic second-parameter globular clusters M3 and M13 from wide-field, deep CCD photometry. The data for the two clusters were obtained during the same photometric nights with the same instrument, allowing us to determine accurate relative ages. Based on a differential comparison of the CMDs using the Δ(B-V) method, an age difference of 1.7 ± 0.7 Gyr is obtained between these two clusters. We compare this result with our updated horizontal-branch (HB) population models, which confirm that the observed age difference can produce the …

Dual Heuristic Programming For Fuzzy Control, George G. Lendaris, Thaddeus T. Shannon, Larry J. Schultz, Steven Hutsell, Alec Rogers

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Overview material for the Special Session (Tuning Fuzzy Controllers Using Adaptive Critic Based Approximate Dynamic Programming) is provided. The Dual Heuristic Programming (DHP) method of Approximate Dynamic Programming is described and used to the design a fuzzy control system. DHP and related techniques have been developed in the neurocontrol context but can be equally productive when used with fuzzy controllers or neuro-fuzzy hybrids. This technique is demonstrated by designing a temperature controller for a simple water bath system. In this example, we take advantage of the TSK model framework to initialize the tunable parameters of our plant model with reasonable …

Mobile-Agent Versus Client/Server Performance: Scalability In An Information-Retrieval Task, Robert S. Gray, David Kotz, Ronald A. Peterson, Joyce Barton, Daria Chacon, Peter Gerken, Martin Hofmann, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Maggie Breedy, Renia Jeffers, Niranjan Suri Dec 2001

Mobile-Agent Versus Client/Server Performance: Scalability In An Information-Retrieval Task, Robert S. Gray, David Kotz, Ronald A. Peterson, Joyce Barton, Daria Chacon, Peter Gerken, Martin Hofmann, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Maggie Breedy, Renia Jeffers, Niranjan Suri

Dartmouth Scholarship

Building applications with mobile agents often reduces the bandwidth required for the application, and improves performance. The cost is increased server workload. There are, however, few studies of the scalability of mobile-agent systems. We present scalability experiments that compare four mobile-agent platforms with a traditional client/server approach. The four mobile-agent platforms have similar behavior, but their absolute performance varies with underlying implementation choices. Our experiments demonstrate the complex interaction between environmental, application, and system parameters.

School Choice Policies In The Political Spectacle, Linda Miller-Kahn, Mary Lee Smith Nov 2001

School Choice Policies In The Political Spectacle, Linda Miller-Kahn, Mary Lee Smith

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article presents research on school choice. It takes the case of a school district in Boulder, Colorado, through the decade of the 1990s and shows how interest groups took advantage of federal, state, and district policies meant to promote school choice and molded them into a system of schools that met individualistic interests rather than the common good. Extensive interviewing and analysis of documents and media reports served as sources of evidence. The authors argue that district officials accommodated the demands of elite groups of parents to transform the district. ...

Non-Target Impacts Of Strychnine Baiting To Reduce Pocket Gopher Populations On Forest Lands In The United States, Dale L. Nolte, Kimberly Wagner Nov 2001

Non-Target Impacts Of Strychnine Baiting To Reduce Pocket Gopher Populations On Forest Lands In The United States, Dale L. Nolte, Kimberly Wagner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Reforestation efforts are often severely hindered on sites that contain high populations of pocket gophers (Thmmysspp). Strychnine baiting is a technique used to suppress pocket gopher populations until seedlings are established. Strychnine bait is applied below ground in pocket gopher burrows, however, primary and secondary hazards remain a concern. A study to assess primary hazards indicated that some individual rodents died post strychnine baiting but there was not a long-term negative impact on non-target rodent populations. Possible secondary hazards reflect the potential for predators OT scavengers to encounter poisoned pocket gophers. Concerns that pocket gophers may surface before …

Journal of Electrochemistry

A new electroactive poly (2,2' diaminophenyloxydisulfide) (PDAPD) was successfully synthesized from acetonitrile(AN)/tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions containing the supporting electrolyte (LiClO4) and the various kinds of acids (HCl, CF3COOH, CCl3COOH) on Pt electrode by consecutive cyclic voltammiry. The effects of the concentrations of supporting electrolyte (LiClO4) and acid (HCl, CF3COOH, CCl3COOH) on electrodepositon of PDAPD film were investigated. The best experimental conditions for electrosynthesis of a highly electroactive conducting polymer film are that the concentrations are 0.1 mol/L and between 0.05 mol/L~0.5 mol/L,respectively for LiClO4 and HCl.

An Investigation Of Structural Properties Of Li-Al-Mixed Doped Spinels Materials Li 1+XAlYMn Z-YO4, Zi-Shan Zheng, Zi-Long Tang, Zhong-Tai Zhang, Wan-Ci Sheng

Journal of Electrochemistry

Al and Li elements were co-doped into host spinel lithium manganese oxide by a simple and economical preparation technology. There was an investigation of the influence of doped Al contents on the initial capacity and cycling performance of the materials. The investigation of the XRD patterns, the analysis of the SEM micrographs and the determination of IR spectroscopy showed that the particles of dopant materials are fine, narrowly distributed and well crystallized, and the bonds Mn-O are stronger than these of undoped materials. The resulted materials have a high initial capacity of 119 mAh/g and good cycling characterization. The capacity …

Studies On The Properties Of The Anodic Films Formed On Lead- Lanthanum And Lead-Samarium Alloys In Sulfuric Acid Solution, Hou-Tian Liu, Chun-Xuao Yang, Hai-Heng Liang, Jiong Yang, Wei-Fang Zhou Nov 2001

Studies On The Properties Of The Anodic Films Formed On Lead- Lanthanum And Lead-Samarium Alloys In Sulfuric Acid Solution, Hou-Tian Liu, Chun-Xuao Yang, Hai-Heng Liang, Jiong Yang, Wei-Fang Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

AC voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and cyclic voltammetry were applied to study the anodic corrosion of Pb, Pb-1.0 at% La and Pb-1.0 at% Sm electrodes in 4.5 mol·dm-3 H2SO4 solution (25 ℃). The experiment results show that samarium can inhibit the anodic corrosion of lead and decrease the impedance of anodic Pb(Ⅱ) film. Lanthanum can also decrease the impedance of the anodic Pb(Ⅱ)film, but the effect is smaller.
