Measuring The Speed Of Sound Of Quintessence, Christian Armendariz-Picon, Joel K. Erickson, R. R. Caldwell, Paul J. Steinhardt, V. Mukhanov Dec 2001

Measuring The Speed Of Sound Of Quintessence, Christian Armendariz-Picon, Joel K. Erickson, R. R. Caldwell, Paul J. Steinhardt, V. Mukhanov

Physics - All Scholarship

Quintessence, a time-varying energy component that may account for the accelerated expansion of the universe, can be characterized by its equation of state and sound speed. In this paper, we show that if the quintessence density is at least one percent of the critical density at the surface of last scattering the cosmic microwave background anisotropy can distinguish between models whose sound speed is near the speed of light versus near zero, which could be useful in distinguishing competing candidates for dark energy.

Method Of Solubilizing Shortened Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes In Organic Solutions, Robert C. Haddon, Jian Chen Dec 2001

Method Of Solubilizing Shortened Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes In Organic Solutions, Robert C. Haddon, Jian Chen

Chemistry Faculty Patents

Naked single-walled nanotube carbon metals and semiconductors were dissolved in organic solutions by derivatization with SOCl2 and octadecylamine charge. Both ionic (charge transfer) and covalent solution phase chemistry with concomitant modulation of the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) band structure were demonstrated. Solution phase near-IR spectroscopy was used to study the effects of chemical modifications on the band gaps of the SWNTs. Reaction of solubilized SWNTs with dichlorocarbene led to functionalization of the nanotube walls.

Development Of Cfl-Free, Explicit Schemes For Multidimensional Advection-Reaction Equations, Hong Wang, Jiangguo Liu Dec 2001

Development Of Cfl-Free, Explicit Schemes For Multidimensional Advection-Reaction Equations, Hong Wang, Jiangguo Liu

Faculty Publications

We combine an Eulerian–Lagrangian approach and multiresolution analysis to develop unconditionally stable, explicit, multilevel methods for multidimensional linear hyperbolic equations. The derived schemes generate accurate numerical solutions even if large time steps are used. Furthermore, these schemes have the capability of carrying out adaptive compression without introducing mass balance error. Computational results are presented to show the strong potential of the numerical methods developed.

Testing A Fourier Accelerated Hybrid Monte Carlo Algorithm, Simon Catterall, Sergey Karamov Dec 2001

Testing A Fourier Accelerated Hybrid Monte Carlo Algorithm, Simon Catterall, Sergey Karamov

Physics - All Scholarship

We describe a Fourier Accelerated Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm suitable for dynamical fermion simulations of non-gauge models. We test the algorithm in supersymmetric quantum mechanics viewed as a one-dimensional Euclidean lattice field theory. We find dramatic reductions in the autocorrelation time of the algorithm in comparison to standard HMC.

Ratio Of Isolated Photon Cross Sections In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 630 And 1800 Gev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Dec 2001

Ratio Of Isolated Photon Cross Sections In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 630 And 1800 Gev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been measured in pp̅ collisions at √s = 630 GeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy (ET) range from 7–49 GeV and have pseudorapidity∣η∣ < 2.5. This measurement is combined with the previous D0 result at √s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading-order QCD with the measured cross section at 630 GeV and the ratio of cross sections show satisfactory agreement in most of the ET range.

The Origin And Composition Of Aerosols In The Alaskan Airshed, Walter James Wilcox Dec 2001

The Origin And Composition Of Aerosols In The Alaskan Airshed, Walter James Wilcox

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Since the Alaskan airshed north of the Alaska Range receives a substantial portion of its anthropogenic aerosol and gaseous pollutants through long-range transport, Alaskan air quality is influenced to an unusually high degree by the political and economic events of other countries. An understanding of the political and economic forces at work in the various circumpolar nations is key to an understanding of the observed decline in Arctic haze, the present state of Arctic air pollution, and likely future developments. It is shown in this thesis that Arctic haze has declined in Interior Alaska over the last decade and a …

Herbivore-Mediated Effects On Ecosystem Processes In A Near-Arctic Salt Marsh, Brian Thomas Person Dec 2001

Herbivore-Mediated Effects On Ecosystem Processes In A Near-Arctic Salt Marsh, Brian Thomas Person

Biological Sciences

Herbivores influence, and often regulate energy flow. I investigated interactions between herbivory and the foods on which geese rely while nesting and rearing their broods on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in southwestern Alaska. In a captive Cackling Canada gosling (Branta Canadensis minima) experiment I decoupled the effects of seasonal declines in forage quality and availability on gosling development. An 11% decline in forage quality translated to goslings that were structurally smaller and 100 g lighter at 31 days of age. Forage availability had similar effects on gosling size, and the combined magnitude of these effects are similar to those observed in …

Finite Element Analysis Of Yield Functions Of Kelvin Foams With Open Cells, Beiqing Huang Dec 2001

Finite Element Analysis Of Yield Functions Of Kelvin Foams With Open Cells, Beiqing Huang

Engineering

Proper design of foams requires an understanding of the response of the materials to stress. This thesis, based on finite element analysis, provides numerical solutions in modeling the yield behavior of Kelvin foams. The FEA model, representing a complicated unit cell, was calculated and meshed. C++ programs were designed and implemented to generate meshes for unit cells. Finite element analyses were performed for many cases. Multiple methods were employed for the determination of yield points which form yield surfaces. Comparisons between several results have been made. Our FEA results, Zhang's function and Gibson's theory show good agreements except some differences …

Search For Gluinos And Squarks Using Like-Sign Dileptons In Pp̅ Collisions At √S= 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present results of the first search for like-sign dilepton (e±e±, e± μ±, μ± μ±) events associated with multijets and large missing energy using 106 pb-1 of data in pp̅ collisions at √s= 1.8 TeV collected during 1992–1995 by the CDF experiment. Finding no events that pass our selection, we examine pair production of gluinos (g̃) and squarks (q̃) in a constrained framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. At tanβ =2 and μ = -800 GeV/c2, we set 95% confidence …

Abundance And Ecology Of Martens (Martes Americana) In Interior Alaska, Brad Shults Dec 2001

Abundance And Ecology Of Martens (Martes Americana) In Interior Alaska, Brad Shults

Biological Sciences

I studied marten (Martes americana) abundance and ecology in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve during 1991-1993. Using a multiple sample, mark-recapture estimator, I estimated marten densities to be 0.69, 0.41, and 0.45 martens/km² during each August for 1991-1993, respectively. Density estimates were derived with the boundary-strip method to address the edge effect inherent in live-trapping studies. During the study, marten density declined 43% between 1991 and 1992 and remained low during 1993. I hypothesize that a decline in primary prey (i.e., microtine rodents) and increased environmental stress (i.e., cold temperatures and snow cover) contributed significantly to the decline in marten …

Role Of Wetlands And Endogenous Factors On Incubation Behavior Of Nesting Spectacled Eiders On The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska, William Todd O'Connell Dec 2001

Role Of Wetlands And Endogenous Factors On Incubation Behavior Of Nesting Spectacled Eiders On The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska, William Todd O'Connell

Biological Sciences

Patterns of nest attendance in ducks vary with endogenous and environmental factors. We examined variation in nest attendance of spectacled eiders on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska, during 1997-1998. We also examined spatial and temporal variation in wetland characteristics and potential foods available to nesting spectacled eiders. Time spent foraging was greater when spectacled eiders traveled farther to feed, and nest attendance was lower when food was more abundant, suggesting that females made tradeoffs between foraging and energetic requirements of nesting in response to food abundance and wetland conditions. Wetlands were dynamic, and food abundance varied with pond depth and total …

Cross-Seasonal Effects On Reproductive Performance Of Pacific Black Brant, Jason Lee Schamber Dec 2001

Cross-Seasonal Effects On Reproductive Performance Of Pacific Black Brant, Jason Lee Schamber

Biological Sciences

We used re-sightings of Pacific Black Brant from San Quintin Bay, Ojo de Lieber Lagoon, and San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California and Boundary Bay, British Columbia, to examine winter population structure, variation in structural size and the importance of winter location to individual reproductive performance at the Tutakoke River colony. Sexes of adults and juveniles were distributed equally among winter locations. Adult structural size and mean age were similar among winter locations. A higher proportion of juveniles over-wintered in San Quinton Bay and Ojo de Liebre Lagoon. Individuals wintering at Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio lagoons were less likely …

Trace Mineral Reserves For Reproduction And Development In Muskoxen, Emmajean Pearl Rombach Dec 2001

Trace Mineral Reserves For Reproduction And Development In Muskoxen, Emmajean Pearl Rombach

Biological Sciences

In muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus), trace minerals required for reproduction and development are unknown. I described use of copper in pregnant muskoxen and concurrent accumulation of copper in fetuses. Utilization of copper was examined in neonates during early development and importance of milk as a source of copper was assessed. Additionally, I examined the effect of maternal copper supplementation during gestation on copper reserves acquired in-utero, and during lactation on mineral status of milk. During gestation, the fetus must acquire reserves of copper adequate to support early neonatal development because milk is a poor source of copper. The transition from milk …

Calving Ground Habitat Selection: Teshekpuk Lake And Western Arctic Caribou Herds, Rebecca A. Kelleyhouse Dec 2001

Calving Ground Habitat Selection: Teshekpuk Lake And Western Arctic Caribou Herds, Rebecca A. Kelleyhouse

Biological Sciences

Barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) exhibit relative fidelity to calving grounds each spring. The Western Arctic Herd (WAH) and Teshekpuk Lake Herd (TLH) calve separately on Alaska's north slope, each selective of the dominant vegetation type. The WAH consumed mostly sedges, though the TLH diet varied. Despite differing snow conditions between the calving grounds, both herds were selective of the lowest snow cover class. Rugged terrain was avoided by both herds. While the TLH selected a high rate of increase in biomass, the WAH selected high biomass at calving and at peak lactation. Climate trends (1985-2001) were variable. There was …

Laser Intensity Scaling Through Stimulated Scattering In Optical Fibers, Timothy H. Russell Dec 2001

Laser Intensity Scaling Through Stimulated Scattering In Optical Fibers, Timothy H. Russell

Theses and Dissertations

The influence of stimulated scattering on laser intensity in fiber optic waveguides is examined. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in long, multimode optical waveguides is found to generate a Stokes beam that propagates in the fiber LP01 mode. Additionally, the same process is found to combine multiple laser beams into a single spatially coherent source. Limitations in beam cleanup and combining are also investigated to identify ways to overcome them. The last portion of the dissertation theoretically examines suppression of stimulated Raman scattering in fibers to eliminate the restriction this imposes on the power of a fiber laser or amplifier. The …

Spatial Distribution And Temporal Variability Of Lithogenic Particles In First-Year Sea Ice And Conditions Responsible For Particle Entrainment, Aaron Patrick Stierle Dec 2001

Spatial Distribution And Temporal Variability Of Lithogenic Particles In First-Year Sea Ice And Conditions Responsible For Particle Entrainment, Aaron Patrick Stierle

Geosciences

Processes controlling the spatial and temporal variability of sea ice sediment inclusions in the shallow-marine environment of Elson Lagoon near Barrow, Alaska, were studied by modeling the potential for sediment resuspension during the 1998, 1999 and 2000 fall freeze-up events and examining sea ice cores from the post-freeze-up ice cover. Resuspension potential was controlled spatially by the local bathymetry and interannually by wind speed and fetch. Increases in resuspension potential corresponded to greater sea ice sediment content. Sediments occurred exclusively as aggregates confined to brine inclusions in the ice and exhibited a tendency toward a clustered spatial distribution, because of …

A Window To The Past: Macrofossil Remains From An 18,000 Year-Old Buried Surface, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Victoria Goetcheus Wolf Dec 2001

A Window To The Past: Macrofossil Remains From An 18,000 Year-Old Buried Surface, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Victoria Goetcheus Wolf

Geosciences

Macrofossil remains and pollen from an 18,000 year old buried surface from the northern Seward Peninsula enable a reconstruction of the full-glacial environment of an upland portion of the Bering Land Bridge. The buried surface represents a dry meadow and herb-rich tundra. Prostrate shrubs were rare on the landscape, but abundant locally. A large and diverse insect fauna populated the surface, preying on the plants and each other. Small mammals and their predators lived on the surface. Large mammals, such as caribou and bison, were present as well. The productivity of the surface was maintained by a continual influx of …

An Improved Non-Regression Coefficients Method In Finding Sea Surface Temperature With A Vhrr Data, Gin-Rong Liu, Pao-Cheng Kao, Tsung-Hua Kuo, Tang-Huang Lin, Chung-Chih Liu Dec 2001

An Improved Non-Regression Coefficients Method In Finding Sea Surface Temperature With A Vhrr Data, Gin-Rong Liu, Pao-Cheng Kao, Tsung-Hua Kuo, Tang-Huang Lin, Chung-Chih Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Yu and Barton proposed a non-regression-coefficient method in improving the accuracy of routine sea surface temperature retrievals through satellite data, which are then applied to sea surface temperature estimation models such as MCSST or CPSST algorithms. Their method involves a parameter called R54(=∆T5/∆T4), which is derived from the ratio of neighborhood temperature variances from two window channels in the thermal IR region. Due to the fact that statistical calculations were used in the derivation for the value of R54, the method is not applicable in various real cases. The aim of this study is to retain the advantage of their …

Multiple Objective And Span Evaluation Method For Damage Grade Of Existing Reinforced Concrete Bridges, Ming-Te Liang, Heng-Dong Wang, Jai-He Wu Dec 2001

Multiple Objective And Span Evaluation Method For Damage Grade Of Existing Reinforced Concrete Bridges, Ming-Te Liang, Heng-Dong Wang, Jai-He Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The principal purpose of this paper was to investigate the evaluation method of performance for existing reinforced concrete bridges. The least squares technique in classical mathematics was adopted firmly to establish both the multiple objective weight distribution method and multiple span level weight method. Thus, the multiple objective and span evaluation method were built for estimating the performance of existing reinforced concrete bridges. The evaluation model may be divided into grades I, II, III and IV which are described as non-damage, light damage, severe damage and unfit for service, respectively. Using the proposed model, the Huey-tong bridge, Jzyhchyang bridge, Ay-gow …

Physics Conference Proceedings And The Electronic Environment—An Investigation Of New Dissemination Patterns., Michael Fosmire Dec 2001

Physics Conference Proceedings And The Electronic Environment—An Investigation Of New Dissemination Patterns., Michael Fosmire

Libraries Research Publications

The electronic publication of articles from physics conference proceedings on the arXive preprint server and on dedicated conference web sites is investigated. Several subdisciplines within physics were sampled. Except for high-energy theory conferences, and to a lesser extent astrophysics, there is almost no publication of proceedings articles on the preprint server. Only one conference out of all those sampled had a web site with conference presentations on it. That web site contained audio files of the presentations and images of the overheads used and thus had much different content than the published proceedings.
