Computational Inference For Evidential Reasoning In Support Of Judicial Proof, Tod S. Levitt, Kathryn Blackmond Laskey Jul 2001

Computational Inference For Evidential Reasoning In Support Of Judicial Proof, Tod S. Levitt, Kathryn Blackmond Laskey

Cardozo Law Review

The process of judicial proof accrues evidence to confirm or deny hypotheses about world events relevant to a legal case. Software applications that seek to support this process must provide the user with sophisticated capabilities to manipulate evidential reasoning for legal cases. This requires computational techniques to represent the actors, entities, events, and context of world situations to structure alternative hypotheses interpreting evidence and to execute processes that draw inferences about the truth of hypotheses by assessing the relevance and weight of evidence to confirm or deny the hypotheses. Bayesian inference networks are combined with knowledge representations from artificial intelligence …

Structured Deliberation For Dynamic Uncertain Inference, Paul Snow, Marianne Belis

Cardozo Law Review

Dynamic uncertain inference is the formation of opinions based upon evidence or argument whose availability is neither disclosed to the analyst in advance nor disclosed all at once. Normative accounts of belief change, which work well when the analyst has prior notice of well-designed experiments and their possible outcomes, may not be applicable to less tidy occasions of inference. In addition, there is the clerical challenge of keeping track of what has been observed, what relates to what, and how. This Article begins with a discussion of subjective valuation in general. An approach to deliberation, similar to what is practiced …

On The Utility Of Entanglement In Quantum Neural Computing, Dan A. Ventura Jul 2001

On The Utility Of Entanglement In Quantum Neural Computing, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Efforts in combining quantum and neural computation are briefly discussed and the concept of entanglement as it applies to this subject is addressed. Entanglement is perhaps the least understood aspect of quantum systems used for computation, yet it is apparently most responsible for their computational power. This paper argues for the importance of understanding and utilizing entanglement in quantum neural computation.

An Evaluation Of Shared Multicast Trees With Multiple Active Cores, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri Jul 2001

An Evaluation Of Shared Multicast Trees With Multiple Active Cores, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri

Faculty Publications

Core-based multicast trees use less router state, but have significant drawbacks when compared to shortest-path trees, namely higher delay and poor fault tolerance. We evaluate the feasibility of using multiple independent cores within a shared multicast tree. We consider several basic designs and discuss how using multiple cores improves fault tolerance without sacrificing router state. We examine the performance of multiple-core trees with respect to single-core trees and find that adding cores significantly lowers delay without increasing cost. Moreover, it takes only a small number of cores, placed with a k-center approximation, for a multiple-core tree to have lower delay …

“Students’ Right,” English Only, And Re-Imagining The Politics Of Language., Bruce Horner

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Argues that a lack of language legislation is indicative of a pervasive, tacit policy of "English Only" in composition and of a constellation of assumptions about languages, and language users that continues to cripple public debate on English Only and compositionists' approaches to matters of "error." Proposes an approach to language and "error" considering the relations of language to power.

Survival Of Avian Carcasses And Photographic Evidence Of Predators And Scavengers, Richard M. Kostecke, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier Jul 2001

Survival Of Avian Carcasses And Photographic Evidence Of Predators And Scavengers, Richard M. Kostecke, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Scavenging of carcasses may bias estimates of mortality following the use of pesticides. To assess carcass survival, we monitored bird carcasses in crop stubble, grassland, roadside, and wooded habitats in east-central South Dakota in early spring. Survival rates differed among habitat types in 1997 but not in 1998. Survival rates did not differ among species of carcass in 1997 or 1998. Within 5 d, 66% of carcasses had been scavenged in both 1997 and 1998. To assess potential hazards of secondary poisoning, we used infrared-triggered camera systems to identify predators and scavengers of live birds and bird carcasses. Mammals ( …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Gray wolf (Canis lupus) populations were eliminated from Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming, as well as adjacent southwestern Canada by the 1930s. After human-caused mortality of wolves in southwestern Canada began to be regulated in the 1960s, populations began expanding southward. Dispersing individuals occasionally reached the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States, but lacked legal protection there until 1974, after passage of the Endangered Species Act of 1973. In 1986, wolves from Canada successfully raised a litter of pups in Glacier National Park, Montana, and a small population was soon established. In 1995 and 1996, wolves from western …

Managing Wolf Conflict With Livestock In The Northwestern United States, Ed Bangs, John A. Shivik

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wolves (Canis lupus) were once common throughout North America but were deliberately exterminated in the lower 48 United States, except in northeastern Minnesota, primarily because of depredations on livestock. Wolves remained abundant in areas with few livestock such as most of Canada and Alaska. Sixty years after being nearly exterminated, the gray wolf was listed under the United States Endangered Species Act (Act) in 1974. The combination of natural recovery in NW Montana, and reintroduction in central Idaho and the Greater Yellowstone area (NW Wyoming, eastern Idaho, and SW Montana) has resulted in an expanding wolf population (Bangs …

Chemical Repellents And Other Aversive Strategies In Predation Management, J.R. R. Mason, J.A. Shivik, M.W. Fall Jul 2001

Chemical Repellents And Other Aversive Strategies In Predation Management, J.R. R. Mason, J.A. Shivik, M.W. Fall

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Chemical repellents and other aversive strategies are the core of non-lethal wildlife management. These strategies typically depend on irritation (pain), conditioning, or fear for their effectiveness, and none is universally successful. Thus, conditioned food aversions deter browsing and foraging by deer (virginianus , O. hemionus), but are less useful with predators, because killing, not consumption, is the behavior of interest. Broadly speaking, the utility of non-lethal strategies is affected by number and density of wildlife species, availability of alternative foods, palatability and novelty of treated items, and intensity of pain, sickness, or fear used to establish avoidance. Some …

A New Approach To Understanding Canid Populations Using An Individual-Based Computer Model: Preliminary Results, William C. Pitt, Frederick F. Knowlton, Paul W. Box

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Ensuring the welfare of wild canid populations depends upon the ability to integrate species biology, the environmental aspects upon which those populations depend, and the factors controlling species abundance. Toward this end, we developed an individual-based computer model using Swarm to mimic natural coyote populations. Swarm is a software platform that allows the user to describe individual behaviors for all individuals, link those behaviors in each concurrent time step, and assemble behaviors and objects in a hierarchical framework. Our model stands apart from previous modeling efforts because it relies on field data and explicitly incorporates behavioral features, such as dominance …

Effect Of Primary And Secondary Repellents On European Starlings: An Initial Assessment, Roger W. Sayre, Larry Clark Jul 2001

Effect Of Primary And Secondary Repellents On European Starlings: An Initial Assessment, Roger W. Sayre, Larry Clark

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wildlife managers need chemical repellents that are effective at deterring damage by birds, but these repellents must be environmentally and toxicologically safe. The number of commercially available bird repellents has been reduced because of concerns about environmental safety. Currently, there are 2 categories of avian repellents. Chemicals that are reflexively avoided by birds because they irritate the peripheral chemical senses are referred to as primary repellents. Chemicals that cause gastrointestinal illness and learned avoidance of ancillary sensory cues that are paired with the illness are known as secondary repellents. Secondary repellents most often identified as the most effective avian repellents …

Resilient Modulus Of Kentucky Soils, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham, Charlie Sun, Bixian Ni Jun 2001

Resilient Modulus Of Kentucky Soils, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham, Charlie Sun, Bixian Ni

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In recent years, the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has recommended the use of resilient modulus for characterizing highway materials for pavement design. This recommendation evolved as of a result of a trend in pavement design of using mechanistic models, which are based on the theory of elasticity (layered elastic analysis) or linear and non-linear, finite elements (and finite difference methods), or a combination of both of those theoretical approaches. Although much progress has been made in recent years in developing mathematical, mechanistic pavement design models, results obtained from those models are only as good as the …

Baseflow Separation Based On Storage-Outflow Modelling Of Streamflow Recessions, With Application To Semi- Arid Catchments In Tanzania, S Mwakalila

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Discharge in many rivers is Often fed by baseflow provided by drainage of the saturated zone in the shallow permeable soils. It is becoming clear that the outflow from this saturated zone is not linear proportional to storage as is commonly assumed in many algorithms. The objectives Of this study theretore, are first to explore the extent to which the assumption of linearity in storage-outflow relationships is valid and secondly to introduce an alternative approach to baseflow separation algorithms for estimating direct mnoff time series. Numerical analysis Of streamflow recessions from the semi-arid catchments of the Great Ruaha basin in …

Comparative Analysis Of Rng K-E And 'Standard' K-C Models For Fluid Flow Around A Cylinder, A Temu

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

A two-dimensional computational scheme for simulating fluid flow around a cylinder was investigated. RNG (Re-NOrmalisation Group) and 'standard' turbulent closure models were used. simulation was implemented with assistance OfFLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The governing equation Of fluid motion, in Eulerian form, included body forces as well as surface forces. The computational model predictions for fluid velocity showed good agreement between the two models. Comparison Of the viscosities showed a large deviation from the two models, with RNG k-E model giving a better approximation. Comparison Of the velocity around the cylinder, as obtained from RNG k-c model, with approximation …
