Application And Interpretation Of Simple Odds Ratios In Physical Therapy-Related Research, Pamela Levangie Sep 2001

Application And Interpretation Of Simple Odds Ratios In Physical Therapy-Related Research, Pamela Levangie

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

Over the past several decades, physical therapists have demonstrated an increasing responsiveness to the profession's obligation to generate objective evidence for examination and intervention strategies employed in physical therapy practice. This trend is evident, not only in the increasing number of journals that are publishing physical therapy research, but in the growing sophistication of research design and analytic options used by investigators. At the same time, physical therapists are held increasingly accountable for adopting an evidence-based approach to practice. The result for many of us is a growing concern about our ability to interpret study findings. The ability to independently …

Minimim Expected Cost-Oriented Optimal Maintenance Planning For Deteriorating Structures: Application To Concrete Bridge Decks, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol Sep 2001

Minimim Expected Cost-Oriented Optimal Maintenance Planning For Deteriorating Structures: Application To Concrete Bridge Decks, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol

Architectural Engineering

Civil engineering structures are designed to serve the public and often must perform safely for decades. No matter how well they are designed, all civil engineering structures will deteriorate over time and lifetime maintenance expenses represent a substantial portion of the total lifetime cost of most structures. It is difficult to make a reliable prediction of this cost when the future is unknown and structural deterioration and behavior are assumed from a mathematical model or previous experience. An optimal maintenance program is the key to making appropriate decisions at the right time to minimize cost and maintain an appropriate level …

Tunable Local Polariton Modes In Semiconductors, Michael G. Foygel, Alexey Yamilov, Lev I. Deych, Alexander A. Lisyansky Sep 2001

Tunable Local Polariton Modes In Semiconductors, Michael G. Foygel, Alexey Yamilov, Lev I. Deych, Alexander A. Lisyansky

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the local states within the polariton band gap that arise due to deep defect centers with strong electron-phonon coupling. Electron transitions involving deep levels may result in alteration of local elastic constants. In this case, substantial reversible transformations of the impurity polariton density of states occur, which include the appearance/disappearance of the polariton impurity band, and its shift and/or the modification of its shape. These changes can be induced by thermo- and photoexcitation of the localized electron states or by trapping of injected charge carriers. We develop a simple model, which is applied to the Op center …

Measurement Of The W Boson Mass With The Collider Detector At Fermilab, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a measurement of the W boson mass using data collected with the CDF detector during the 1994–1995 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. A fit to the transverse mass spectrum of a sample of 30115 W→eν events recorded in an integrated luminosity of 84 pb-1 gives a mass Mw=80.473±0.065(stat) ±0.092(syst) GeVc2. A fit to the transverse mass spectrum of a sample of 14740 W→μν events from 80 pb-1 gives a mass Mw=80.465±0.100(stat) ±0.103(syst) GeV/c2. The dominant contributions to the systematic uncertainties are the …

Off-Diagonal Exchange-Induced Transverse And Field-Induced Spin-Flop Order In The Diluted Metamagnet Fe0.85Mg0.15Br2, Wolfgang Kleeman, H. Aruga Katori, T. Kato, Christian Binek, K. Katsumata Sep 2001

Off-Diagonal Exchange-Induced Transverse And Field-Induced Spin-Flop Order In The Diluted Metamagnet Fe0.85Mg0.15Br2, Wolfgang Kleeman, H. Aruga Katori, T. Kato, Christian Binek, K. Katsumata

Christian Binek Publications

Specific heat and Faraday rotation magnetometry were used to determine the axial magnetic phase diagram of the dilute hexagonal antiferromagnet Fe0.85Mg0.15Br2. In contrast to metamagnetic pure FeBr2, the first-order line of transverse phase transitions, H1(T), is disconnected with the antiferro-to-paramagnetic phase line Hc(T) and extends down to Ht=0 at Tt≈8.7 . This is attributed to symmetric off-diagonal exchange in the presence of structural disorder. Moreover, a spin-flop phase emerges beyond Hc(T) up to a bicritical point (Tb≈9.3 , μoH …

Alexei Gruverman Publications

Current trend to miniaturization requires precise control of micro- and domain structure of ferroelectric materials at the nanoscale level. This is essential for future applications of ferroelectric thin films in non-volatile memories, microactuators and pyroelectric arrays. In this work, the seeding effect on the nanoscale properties of ferroelectric Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) thin films is investigated using scanning force microscopy (SFM) capable of simultaneously resolving topographic and domain features on the surface of the films. It is shown that the addition of 5 mol% seeds (fine PZT powder) into the sol–gel precursor solution completely modifies the film’s microstructure leading to the …

Nonparametric Techniques To Extract Fuzzy Rules For Breast Cancer Diagnosis Problem, Manish Sarkar, Tze-Yun Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper addresses breast cancer diagnosis problem as a pattern classification problem. Specifically, the problem is studied using Wisconsin-Madison breast cancer data set. Fuzzy rules are generated from the input-output relationship so that the diagnosis becomes easier and transparent for both patients and physicians. For each class, at least one training pattern is chosen as the prototype, provided (a) the maximum membership of the training pattern is in the given class, and (b) among all the training patterns, the neighborhood of this training pattern has the least fuzzy-rough uncertainty in the given class. Using the fuzzy-rough uncertainty, a cluster is …

The Construct Validity Of A Belgian Assessment Centre: A Comparison Of Different Models, Filip Lievens, Etienne Van Keer Sep 2001

The Construct Validity Of A Belgian Assessment Centre: A Comparison Of Different Models, Filip Lievens, Etienne Van Keer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigates the construct validity of a Belgian assessment centre through a comprehensive set of confirmatory factor analysis models. In particular, the general confirmatory factor analysis approach as well as the correlated uniqueness approach are fitted to the same data. Results replicate Sagie and Magnezy's (1997) finding that the correlated uniqueness model is appropriate to represent exercise effects in assessment centres, as a good fit and no estimation problems are obtained. In this model the dimensions explain 36% of variance, revealing evidence of convergent validity. Possibly, this is due to the careful design of this assessment centre. Evidence of …

Development And Construction Of A White Light Profiler For Industrial Applications, Martin Somers Sep 2001

Development And Construction Of A White Light Profiler For Industrial Applications, Martin Somers

Masters

With the ever decreasing tolerances in modern manufacturing processes it has become more important to define surface topography measurements quickly and accurately. Though contact methods, using the stylus probe, have been used for a long time more optical techniques are being brought into the market place. The advantages in using optical methods is obvious; no contact with the surface eliminates damage due to a probing tip and also the surface may be scanned in a matter of seconds. Optical techniques also have the advantage that a full field of view may be acquired, unlike point measurement where the surface must …

Exploiting Image Indexing Techniques In Dct Domain, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Ronald T. Chin Sep 2001

Exploiting Image Indexing Techniques In Dct Domain, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Ronald T. Chin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper is concerned with the indexing and retrieval of images based on features extracted directly from the JPEG discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain. We examine possible ways of manipulating DCT coefficients by standard image analysis approaches to describe image shape, texture, and color. Through the Mandala transformation, our approach groups a subset of DCT coefficients to form ten blocks. Each block represents a particular frequency content of the original image. Two blocks are used to model rough object shape; nine blocks to describe subband properties; and one block to compute color distribution. As a result, the amount of data …

Improving Cluster Utilization Through Set Based Allocation Policies, Quinn O. Snell, Julio C. Facelli, Brian D. Haymore, David B. Jackson Sep 2001

Improving Cluster Utilization Through Set Based Allocation Policies, Quinn O. Snell, Julio C. Facelli, Brian D. Haymore, David B. Jackson

Faculty Publications

While clusters have already proven themselves in the world of high performance computing, some clusters are beginning to exhibit resource inefficiencies due to increasing hardware diversity. Much of the success of clusters lies in the use of commodity components built to meet various hardware standards. These standards have allowed a great level of hardware backwards compatibility that is now resulting in a condition referred to as hardware 'drift' or heterogeneity. The hardware heterogeneity introduces problems when diverse compute nodes are allocated to a parallel job, as most parallel jobs are not self-balancing. This paper presents a new method that allows …

Using Neural Networks To Estimate Wind Turbine Power Generation, Shuhui Li, Donald C. Wunsch, Edgar O'Hair, Michael G. Giesselmann Sep 2001

Using Neural Networks To Estimate Wind Turbine Power Generation, Shuhui Li, Donald C. Wunsch, Edgar O'Hair, Michael G. Giesselmann

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper uses data collected at Central and South West Services Fort Davis wind farm to develop a neural network based prediction of power produced by each turbine. The power generated by electric wind turbines changes rapidly because of the continuous fluctuation of wind speed and direction. It is important for the power industry to have the capability to perform this prediction for diagnostic purposes—lower-than-expected wind power may be an early indicator of a need for maintenance. In this paper, characteristics of wind power generation are first evaluated in order to establish the relative importance for the neural network. A …

Vide: A Visual Data Extraction Environment For The Web, Yi Li, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the rapid growth of information on the Web, a means to combat information overload is critical. In this paper, we present ViDE (Visual Data Extraction), an interactive web data extraction environment that supports efficient hierarchical data wrapping of multiple web pages. ViDE has two unique features that differentiate it from other extraction mechanisms. First, data extraction rules can be easily specified in a graphical user interface that is seamlessly integrated with a web browser. Second, ViDE introduces the concept of grouping which unites the extraction rules for a set of documents with the navigational patterns that exist among them. …

Large-Scale Power Spectrum And Structures From The Enear Galaxy Peculiar Velocity Catalogue, S. Zaroubi, M. Bernardi, L. N. Da Costa, Y. Hoffman, M. V. Alonso, G. Wegner Sep 2001

Large-Scale Power Spectrum And Structures From The Enear Galaxy Peculiar Velocity Catalogue, S. Zaroubi, M. Bernardi, L. N. Da Costa, Y. Hoffman, M. V. Alonso, G. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We estimate the mass density fluctuations power spectrum (PS) on large scales by applying a maximum likelihood technique to the peculiar velocity data of the recently completed redshift—distance survey of early-type galaxies (hereafter ENEAR). Parametric cold dark matter (CDM)-like models for the PS are assumed, and the best-fitting parameters are determined by maximizing the probability of the model given the measured peculiar velocities of the galaxies, their distances and estimated errors. The method has been applied to CDM models with and without COBE normalization. The general results are in agreement with the high-amplitude power spectra found from similar analyses of …

Applying An Integrated Model To The Evaluation Of Travel Demand Management Policies In The Sacramento Region, Mti Report 01-03, Robert A. Johnston

Mineta Transportation Institute

The Mineta Transportation Institute at San José State University conducted this study to review the issues and implications involved in the project in question. The primary objective of this study was to use an advanced integrated land use and transportation model to evaluate transit and supportive land use and pricing policies; the Sacramento MEPLAN model was used to simulate these policies. The model represents the effect of changes in the transportation system on land use. If the land use and transportation interaction is not represented, then the analysis of transit and highway alternatives may be biased. For example, if the …

The First Detection Of Coherent Emission From Radio Pulsars, F. A. Jenet, S. B. Anderson, T. A. Prince

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The statistical properties of the radio emission from the pulsars B0823+26, B0950+08, B1133+16, and B1937+21 are studied using high time resolution observations taken at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Temporally coherent non-Gaussian emission has been detected in three of the four observed objects. This is the first time such a phenomenon has been observed. The results have been interpreted using a generalized shot noise model, and various basic physical quantities pertaining to the magnetospheric plasma have been estimated.

Buckling Of Composite Conical Shells Under Combined Axial Compression, External Pressure, And Bending, Youngjin Chung Aug 2001

Buckling Of Composite Conical Shells Under Combined Axial Compression, External Pressure, And Bending, Youngjin Chung

Dissertations

Conical shells are extensively used in space crafts, robots, shelters, domes, tanks, and in machinery or devices (e.g. as Belleville washers). Thus, the design of minimum weight, maximum strength, stiffened conical (and cylindrical) shells under combined loads has long been of interest to designers. The objective of this study is to improve the strength of conical shells and reduce the weight of the structure. Buckling of composite conical shells subjected to combined axial loading, external pressure, and bending is investigated using energy and finite element methods. The conical shells have single and multiple layers, different cone angle, length, and radius. …
