Flarr Pages #22: From Movies To Film: From Entertaining To Learning, Sonja Bertucci Oct 2001

Flarr Pages #22: From Movies To Film: From Entertaining To Learning, Sonja Bertucci

FLARR Pages

Today movies are a mass entertainment vehicle likely to be used as a class entertainment one. How to use movies so that the "didactical" nature of the relationship between student and teacher is not changed into a "commercial" relationship, where the student is the client and must be entertained, is a real question. To use movies in the classroom risks a kind of pop-culture education, but not to use them is to give up a potentially innovative method of teaching and resort only to what can be gained from words, books, and the like.

Non-Associative Operations, Bernadette Bouchon-Meunier, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen Oct 2001

Non-Associative Operations, Bernadette Bouchon-Meunier, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

How is fuzzy logic usually formalized? There are many seemingly reasonable requirements that a logic should satisfy: e.g., since A&B and B&A are the same, the corresponding and-operation should be commutative. Similarly, since A&A means the same as A, we should expect that the and-operation should also satisfy this property, etc. It turns out to be impossible to satisfy all these seemingly natural requirements, so usually, some requirements are picked as absolutely true (like commutativity or associativity), and others are ignored if they contradict to the picked ones. This idea leads to a neat mathematical theory, but the analysis of …

A Critique Of Markedness-Based Theories In Phonology, Naomi Gurevich Oct 2001

A Critique Of Markedness-Based Theories In Phonology, Naomi Gurevich

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

The notion of markedness has been prevalent in phonology since its use by one of the founders of the Prague school of phonology, Trubetzkoy (1939). In contemporary writing it is most often used as a measure of the relative naturalness of linguistic elements. In this paper I explore the use of markedness in phonology literature and argue that it is an ill-defined notion that relies on circular reasoning and, quite often, leads to conflicting or vacuous predictions. Specifically, I question the generative theory-internal notion that markedness is encoded in the grammar. I focus on the multi-dimensional aspect of markedness in …

A Comment On Language And Norms In Complex Business Contracting, Claire A. Hill Oct 2001

A Comment On Language And Norms In Complex Business Contracting, Claire A. Hill

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Complex contracts, such as those governing loans and acquisitions, create a state of the world-parties entering into a contract thereby become bound. The contract expressly summons up legal consequences for every promise it contains. But the relationship between the promises and the law's force is attenuated. Very often contract provisions set the stage rather than provide the script: accommodation seems more the rule than the exception. Indeed, for most contracting parties, the law's specter is one of many reasons to do what they promised to do, and often, not the most important reason. Parties also feel constrained by reputational and …

The Written Contract As Safe Harbor For Dishonest Conduct, Lawrence M. Solan Oct 2001

The Written Contract As Safe Harbor For Dishonest Conduct, Lawrence M. Solan

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The parol evidence rule excludes extrinsic evidence of prior or contemporaneous understandings of an agreement when the parties have signed a document that purports to encompass their entire understanding. In theory, this rule is designed to add certainty to business transactions and to inhibit the introduction of unreliable evidence into the litigation system. But in practice, if we eliminate the introduction of precontractual representations and understandings from the dispute resolution process, we create a safe harbor for unethical business practices in the early stages of contract formation. Using insights from linguistics and psychology, the Article argues that this problem is …

“Expressive Technology”: Multimedia Projects In Honors Courses, Patricia Worrall

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

“How might one build a creative arts component . . . into a course not otherwise involved with the creative arts?” was one of the questions Rusty Rushton posed in his Call for Papers for the volume titled “Honors and the Creative Arts.” His question caught my attention. The NCHC’s Mission Statement calls upon us as teachers of Honors courses “to enhance opportunities (academic, cultural, and social) responsive to educational needs of highly able and/or exceptionally motivated undergraduate students.” On the other hand, however, we may feel, as Gail E. Hawisher and Cynthia L. Selfe clearly do, that “we often …

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 3 - “You Don’T Have To Hear, Just Interpret!”: How Ethnocentrism In The California Courts Impedes Equal Access To The Courts For Spanish Speakers, Roxana Cardenas

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

This article analyzes the legal field’s apparent lack of interest in interpreter-related problems as a major barrier to ensuring equal access to the courts for Spanish speakers. It also seeks to dispel certain myths or misinformation about the function of interpreters by delving into a particular infamous case that involved the misuse of interpreters: the O.J. Simpson case.
