A Crosswalk Between The Final Hipaa Privacy Rule And Existing Federal Substance Abuse Confidentiality Requirements, Brian Kamoie, Phyllis Borzi

This Issue Brief provides an overview of and crosswalk between the Privacy Rule and the federal Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Patient Records statute, 42 U.S.C. § 290dd-2, and its implementing regulations at 42 C.F.R. Part 2 ("42 C.F.R. Part 2"). The crosswalk is intended to highlight the differences between the requirements of the Privacy Rule and 42 C.F.R. Part 2. In addition, this Issue Brief addresses the Privacy Rule's applicability to special populations and psychotherapy services provided by substance abuse paraprofessionals.

An Overview Of Legal Developments In Managed Care Caselaw And Selected Case Studies Of Legal Developments In State Contracting For Managed Behavioral Health Services, Sara J. Rosenbaum, D. Richard Mauery, Joel B. Teitelbaum

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

This analysis provides an overview of recent legal developments in managed care case law. Three types of cases are reviewed: claims brought by managed care enrollees against managed care companies and health plans; cases related either directly or indirectly to managed care and brought by both beneficiaries and managed care organizations against state Medicaid agencies and other public agencies engaged in the purchase of managed care; and cases brought by individual health professionals against managed care organizations.

Vincent Lee McKusick was born October 21, 1921 in Parkman, Maine on the family dairy farm. His parents were Carroll L. and Ethel (Buzzell) McKusick. His father graduated from Bates College in 1904, as did his sister, Grace, in 1930. His father served with Ed Muskie in the Maine legislature in the early 1940s. Vincent’s twin brother, Victor, is a renowned geneticist. Vincent’s education included attending a one-room school house, Guilford High School, Bates College (class of 1944), MIT (engineering 1947) and Harvard Law School (1950), where he was president of the Harvard Law Review. Daniel E. Wathen was born November 4, 1939 in Easton, Maine to Wilda Persis and Joseph Jackson Wathen. He graduated from Easton High School and Ricker College in Houlton, Maine (1962), University of Maine School of Law (1965), and the University of Virginia School of Law (1988). He was appointed to the Maine Superior Court by Governor James Longley and served in that capacity for four years. He was then appointed Justice to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court by Governor John McKernan. He was a Justice for ten years, then Chief Justice for ten more years. Justice Wathen retired from …

Ten Thin Slices: A Study Of Customer Satisfaction In Retail Business Transactions Wherein Service Providers And Customers Have Different Primary Languages, C. Fritz Reichert

Student Scholarship

This paper addresses the effect on customer service satisfaction of primary language differences between service personnel and customers in retail store environments. This study was conducted using ethnographic research methods in five different retail store environments where service personnel were Spanish-speaking and customers English- speaking. The results of the study suggest that primary language differences in the service dyad can result in impaired service and customer dissatisfaction. The results of the study also indicate that store management can control some factors to increase customer satisfaction.

Rosalyne (Spindel) Bernstein was born Dec. 22, 1928 in Bronx, N.Y. Her parents, Harry and Bertha (Lehrer) Spindel, were Jewish immigrants from Poland, working class, and liberal Democrats involved in the Workmen’s Circle. She grew up in a Jewish neighborhood with daily political discussions in the home. She attended Durkee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts and was captain of the Debate Team and President of the Debate Club. Through high school she worked part-time six days a week. A graduate of Radcliffe College, she majored in Economics and participated in Zionist activities. She moved with her husband to Portland …
