A list of 35 scale insects collected from 72 ornamental plant species in São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil is provided. Regarding host specificity, 30 scale insects were polyphagous, 4 oligophagous, and 1 monophagous. A total of 102 coccoid/plant associations are recorded, 29 of which are new host records for the species; 60 are new host records for the species in Brazil. Pulvinaria urbicola Cockerell, 1893 (Coccidae), Phenacoccus similis Granara de Willink, 1983 (Pseudococcidae), and Orthezia molinarii (Morrison, 1952) (Ortheziidae) are recorded for the first time in Brazil. In addition, we describe the injury caused by scale insects on ornamental plants.
Conceptual Constraints On Thinking About Genocide, David Moshman
Conceptual Constraints On Thinking About Genocide, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Our thinking is unavoidably constrained by our conceptual structures. To the extent that we reflect on and reconstruct our concepts, however, we can sharpen our thinking. The first section of this article considers the nature of concepts, highlighting a standard distinction between prototype-based and formal concepts. Drawing on these insights from cognitive psychology, the second section suggests that the ability to recognize and understand genocides is greatly restricted by Holocaust-based conceptions of genocide. In turn one can enhance one’s understanding via the construction and application of formal concepts of genocide. Extending this argument, I observe in the third section that …

Fabrication Of Thin Film Nanoscale Alumina Templates, Paul B. Sines
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Semiconductor nanostructures have superior electronic and optical properties that are expected to play an important role in 21st century electronic and photonic devices. Recognizing this potential, semiconductor nanostructures have been the focus of research over the past 25 years, and many ultra-high performance devices have been demonstrated. While the potential of this class of devices is clear, their commercial applications have been limited by the lack of a fabrication process suited to economical volume production. The initial method of nanostructure fabrication using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching is not considered practical due to its high cost and low …

Structural Studies Of Metastable Nanocrystalline Magnesium Titanate Ceramics, Renmei Xu
Masters Theses
Nanocrystalline magnesium titanate powders were produced using alkoxides of magnesium and titanium for the sol-gel method. High temperature phases which can only be formed at above 1200°C in equilibrium were formed at much lower temperature 600°C in nanometric system. Cation ordering and structural changes in qandilite (Mg2TiO4 ), geikielite (MgTiO3 ) and karrooite (MgTi2O5 ) were studied by Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction data and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Single qandilite phases were obtained in a wide range of Mg:Ti ratios from 2:038:1 to 1.52:1, and appeared to be Mg2-xTi1+x …
