Reproductive Biology Of Lygodium Microphyllum And L. Japonicum, Two Invasive Fern Species In Florida, Michael Stephen Lott Jan 2001

Reproductive Biology Of Lygodium Microphyllum And L. Japonicum, Two Invasive Fern Species In Florida, Michael Stephen Lott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Lygodium microphyllum and L. japonicum are two non-indigenous invasive climbing ferns which are currently spreading through Florida. The reproductive biology of both species was examined to determine if their reproductive strategy partially explains this spread. Gametophytes of both species were grown in vitro as isolates and pairs to examine reproductive strategies. L. microphyllum appeared to be capable of both outcrossing and selfing, while in L. japonicum intragametophytic selfing appeared to be the primary mode of sexual reproduction. Outcrossing in L. microphyllum appeared to be the result of an antheridiogen system that affected sexual expression of neighboring gametophytes and subsequent sporophyte …

Remote Labs: Design And Implementation Issues, Samer M. Aoudi Jan 2001

Remote Labs: Design And Implementation Issues, Samer M. Aoudi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis proposes the use of remote laboratory experiments in distance education as a tool to add a reality factor to the distance learning process, thus combining the convenience of distance education with the effectiveness of the traditional physical campus, through its laboratories and technological resources. Moreover, this research studies the different aspects of distance education and remote labs and then provides a proposition to develop an effective remote laboratory setup. Furthermore, it introduces and discusses the different components of a general remote lab experiment and applies the proposed process to an actual remote lab experiment, namely 'The Characteristics of …

Seafinding Orientation Of Hatchlings Exposed To Filtered Lighting: Effects Of Varying Beach Conditions, Susan Mary Tuxbury Jan 2001

Seafinding Orientation Of Hatchlings Exposed To Filtered Lighting: Effects Of Varying Beach Conditions, Susan Mary Tuxbury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Under normal conditions, hatchling sea turtles crawl toward the ocean but streetlights placed on coastal roadways can attract the turtles toward land. Two light filters were designed to exclude the shorter light wavelengths most attractive to turtles. I did laboratory tests to determine if green turtle and loggerhead hatchlings oriented normally ("seaward") in the presence of filtered lighting. Light passed through either filter (#2422 acrylic and NLW) attracted the turtles unless coastal cues (an elevated horizon) were strong or background (full moon) illumination was present. Green turtles and loggerheads responded differently to the same filters, indicating that neither filter provided …

Teaching Sight Words To Students With Mental Retardation And Learning Disabilities: Constant Time Delay Versus Interspersal Of Known Items, Melissa Gail Knight Jan 2001

Teaching Sight Words To Students With Mental Retardation And Learning Disabilities: Constant Time Delay Versus Interspersal Of Known Items, Melissa Gail Knight

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study compared the efficacy and efficiency of using constant time delay (CTD) with interspersal of known items (IKI) paired with an error correction technique to teach sight words to students with mild mental retardation and learning disabilities. Time delay is a technique that transfers stimulus control from a controlling prompt (a prompt that results in correct task performance) to the discriminative stimulus (stimulus presented before a response can occur) by delaying the presentation of the prompt after the stimulus has been presented. During the initial trial, the delay between prompt and stimulus is at 0-seconds; during all other trials …

The Use Of Nesting Initiation Dates Of Roseate Spoonbills ( Ajaia Ajaja) In Northeastern Florida Bay As An Ecosystem Indicator For Water Management Practices, 1935--1999, Rodriguez Elsa Marcella Alvear Jan 2001

The Use Of Nesting Initiation Dates Of Roseate Spoonbills ( Ajaia Ajaja) In Northeastern Florida Bay As An Ecosystem Indicator For Water Management Practices, 1935--1999, Rodriguez Elsa Marcella Alvear

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Quantity and timing of freshwater flow from the Everglades to Florida Bay varied under different water management practices in the twentieth century, with negative ecological repercussions. Ecological indicators that respond to differences in hydrology, such as wading bird colony dynamics, can be used for hydrological restoration projects. I examined the possibility of using timing of nesting of Roseate Spoonbills (Ajaia ajaja) in northeastern Florida Bay as an ecological indicator. Nest initiation dates (N = 51) from 1936--1999 (x = November 25) were calculated from numerous published and unpublished sources. The dates were strikingly consistent and did not show significant trends …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This investigation is the first to focus on the underwater behaviors and development of free-ranging Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) mothers and calves. Underwater video recordings of 30 mother/calf pairs, during the calves' first three years of life, and 10 additional videos of four-year-old calves, were analyzed. Behavioral event frequencies were compared to the calf's age bracket (i.e. year-one, two, three and four). Results demonstrate an increase in calf independence in year-four shown by a significant reduction in Nursing Act behaviors, significantly more Feeding/Foraging behaviors, and increased behaviors performed in the proximity of individuals other than the mother or alone. …

William A. Dunning Revisited: The Mind Or Malice Of Reconstruction?, Kathleen P. Barsalou Jan 2001

William A. Dunning Revisited: The Mind Or Malice Of Reconstruction?, Kathleen P. Barsalou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Historian William A. Dunning was responsible for the first scholarly treatment of the Reconstruction era. The terms which his contemporaries used to describe him differ strikingly from those historians may choose today. Since the 1930s, American historiography has reflected the new emphasis on sociology and psychology with a radical shift in subject matter away from the traditional political focus. Surely, certain truths are known to the modern historian which were not known to those who lived earlier. However, to discard the insights of one generation of historians is, perhaps, to ignore some of history's most important resources.

Misplaced Marketing: Why Television Is The “Wrong” Environment For Public Service Advertising Campaigns, Joyce M. Wolburg Jan 2001

Misplaced Marketing: Why Television Is The “Wrong” Environment For Public Service Advertising Campaigns, Joyce M. Wolburg

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Notes that research has shown that advertising efforts to promote social causes rarely reach meaningful levels of effectiveness. Points out that while the media provide the right emotional climate for advertising messages that encourage consumption, it follows that the media provide the wrong environment for messages that discourage consumption or other behaviors. Concludes that money spent might best be redirected to other prevention efforts that more directly accomplish the social program’s goals.

To assist creators of public service announcements and anti-drinking campaigns, this study provides an in-depth examination of the risks of binge drinking from the perspective of college students. Using current risk models for guidance, key elements from the qualitative data in the study are addressed, including perceived risks and their severity, vulnerability to risks, self-efficacy, response efficacy, benefits from ritual functions, and other costs or benefits based on students' attitudes and beliefs. An integrated risk perception model is introduced. Student participants enumerated extensive risks; however, they generally felt invulnerable to the consequences. Most adopted a management style of “taking chances” …

The Effects Of Expectancy Disconfirmation On Outcome Satisfaction In Police-Citizen Encounters, Michael D. Reisig, Meghan S. Stroshine Jan 2001

The Effects Of Expectancy Disconfirmation On Outcome Satisfaction In Police-Citizen Encounters, Michael D. Reisig, Meghan S. Stroshine

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This study tests the expectancy disconfirmation model using survey data from citizens who recently had police encounters. We find support for the expectancy disconfirmation model's primary hypothesis that increased disparity between expectations of police performance and actual service inversely affects citizen satisfaction with the way the police handle encounters. This finding persists for both voluntary (e.g. breaking and entering victims) and involuntary (e.g. traffic citations) police encounters. Our results also suggest that the scope of the expectancy disconfirmation model is limited. For example, the disparity between expectations and actual service is not correlated with citizen satisfaction with the police in …

Role Playing And Cooperative Learning In The Ais Course, Dennis F. Togo, Kristi Jane Yuthas Jan 2001

Role Playing And Cooperative Learning In The Ais Course, Dennis F. Togo, Kristi Jane Yuthas

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

The accounting information systems course is often viewed as difficult to teach because it contains topics that are less quantifiable and structured in comparison to courses in financial or managerial!cost accounting. Yet, many AIS instructors have developed successful teaching techniques that are suited to the AIS course. A creative teaching approach for the AIS course is that of role-playing organizations and their operations, especially for transaction cycles. In addition, cooperative learning can be nicely coupled with role playing because of their common emphases on social interdependence and shared learning. The benefits and guidelines for cooperative learning and role playing are …

Criminal Prosecution For Hmo Treatment Denial, John A. Humbach Jan 2001

Criminal Prosecution For Hmo Treatment Denial, John A. Humbach

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article will first provide a brief examination of the economic pressures that market forces bring to bear on HMOs and their decision-making personnel. The objective is to show how the natural effect of normal market forces is to exert a constant pressure towards treatment delays and denials, particularly in the cases of elderly and chronically ill patients. Part III will provide an overview of the existing criminal law as it applies to situations in which death results because someone has violated a legal duty to provide medical treatment. In Part IV, the question of the requisite mental culpability will …

The Prosecutor's Duty To Truth, Bennett L. Gershman Jan 2001

The Prosecutor's Duty To Truth, Bennett L. Gershman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Part I of this Article discusses the prosecutor's duty to refrain from conduct that impedes the search for truth. A prosecutor may impede the truth-finding process in several ways: (1) distorting the truth by attacking the defendant's character, misleading and misrepresenting facts, and engaging in inflammatory conduct; (2) subverting the truth by making false statements and presenting false evidence; (3) suppressing the truth by failing to disclose potentially truth-enhancing evidence or obstructing defense access to potentially truth-enhancing evidence; and (4) other truth-disserving conduct that exploits defense counsel's misconduct and mistakes and prevents introduction of potentially truth-serving defenses. Part I also …

Applying The Method Of Moments And The Partial Element Equivalent Circuit Modeling Techniques To A Special Challenge Problem Of A Pc Board With Long Wires Attached, Yun Ji, Bruce Archambeault, Todd H. Hubing

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates a canonical printed circuit board (PCB) problem using both a method of moments (MoM) and a partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) modeling technique. The problem consists of a PCB populated with three traces. One trace is a signal line and the other two are I/O lines that couple to the signal line and extend beyond the boundary of the board. Although the MoM code was a frequency domain code and the PEEC code was a time-domain code, good agreement was achieved in both the time-domain and the frequency-domain

Laser-Derived Particle Size Data From Crp-3, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica: Implications For Sequence And Seismic Stratigraphy, Christopher R. Fielding, G. B. Dunbar, S. M. Bryce

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Seven hundred and nineteen samples from throughout the Cainozoic section in CRP-3 were analysed by a Malvern Mastersizer laser particle analyser, in order to derive a stratigraphic distribution of grain-size parameters downhole. Entropy analysis of these data (using the method of Woolfe & Michibayashi, 1995) allowed recognition of four groups of samples, each group characterised by a distinctive grain-size distribution. Group 1, which shows a multi-modal distribution, corresponds to mudrocks, interbedded mudrock/sandstone facies, muddy sandstones and diamictites. Group 2, with a sand-grade mode but showing wide dispersion of particle size, corresponds to muddy sandstones, a few cleaner sandstones and some …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

An 823 m thick glaciomarine Cenozoic section sitting unconformably on the Lower Devonian Beacon Supergroup was recovered in CRP –3. This paper reviews the chronostratigraphical constraints for the Cenozoic section. Between 3 and 480.27 mbsf 23 unconformity bounded cycles of sediment were recorded. Each unconformity is thought to represent a hiatus of uncertain duration. Four magnetozones have been recognised from the Cenozoic section. The record is complex with several “tiny wiggles” recorded throughout. Biostratigraphical or Sr ages, which could be used to link these magnetozones to the magnetic polarity time scale are restricted to the upper 190 m of sediment. …

This work is supported and managed through the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center-SBIR Program. LED-technology developed for NASA plant growth experiments in space shows promise for delivering light deep into tissues of the body to promote wound healing and human tissue growth. We present the results of LED-treatment of cells grown in culture and the effects of LEDs on patients’ chronic and acute wounds. LED-technology is also biologically optimal for photodynamic therapy of cancer and we discuss our successes using LEDs in conjunction with light-activated chemotherapeutic drugs.

Dynamic Re-Optimization Of A Fed-Batch Fermentor Using Adaptive Critic Designs, Donald C. Wunsch, M. S. Iyer Jan 2001

Dynamic Re-Optimization Of A Fed-Batch Fermentor Using Adaptive Critic Designs, Donald C. Wunsch, M. S. Iyer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Traditionally, fed-batch biochemical process optimization and control uses complicated off-line optimizers, with no online model adaptation or re-optimization. This study demonstrates the applicability of a class of adaptive critic designs for online re-optimization and control of an aerobic fed-batch fermentor. Specifically, the performance of an entire class of adaptive critic designs, viz., heuristic dynamic programming, dual heuristic programming and generalized dual heuristic programming, was demonstrated to be superior to that of a heuristic random optimizer, on optimization of a fed-batch fermentor operation producing monoclonal antibodies

Detection And Classification Of Impact-Induced Damage In Composite Plates Using Neural Networks, Rohit Dua, Steve Eugene Watkins, Donald C. Wunsch, K. Chandrashekhara, Farhad Akhavan Jan 2001

Detection And Classification Of Impact-Induced Damage In Composite Plates Using Neural Networks, Rohit Dua, Steve Eugene Watkins, Donald C. Wunsch, K. Chandrashekhara, Farhad Akhavan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Artificial neutral networks (ANN) can be used as an online health monitoring systems (involving damage assessment, fatigue monitoring and delamination detection) for composite structures owing to their inherent fast computing speeds, parallel processing and ability to learn and adapt to the experimental data. The amount of impact-induced strain on a composite structure can be found using strain sensors attached to composite structures. Prior work has shown that strain-based ANN can characterize impact energy on composite plates and that strain signatures can be associated with damage types and severity. This paper reports the extension of this approach for damage classification using …

Measurement And Monitoring Of Microwave Reflection And Transmission Properties Of Cement-Based Specimens, Sergey Kharkovsky, M. F. Akay, U. C. Hasar, C. D. Atis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results of measurement and monitoring of reflection and transmission properties of cement-based specimens (blocks of mortar, concrete) during long time of their service lives, including hydration process, and different curing conditions at microwave frequencies (X-band) are presented. A simple and inexpensive measurement system that utilizes the nondestructive and contactless free space method is used. Dependencies of the reflection and transmission coefficients on water-to-cement ratio, preparing and curing conditions of the specimens are demonstrated. It is shown that the reflection coefficient is approximately stable after hydration process while the transmission coefficient changes during long time of the specimen''s service life. …

Multi-Level Voltage-Source Duty-Cycle Modulation: Analysis And Implementation, Keith Corzine, J. R. Baker Jan 2001

Multi-Level Voltage-Source Duty-Cycle Modulation: Analysis And Implementation, Keith Corzine, J. R. Baker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-level converters have become increasingly popular due to high power quality, high-voltage capability, low switching losses, and low EMC concerns. Considering these advantages, the multi-level converter is a suitable candidate for implementation of future naval ship propulsion systems. This paper focuses on modulation techniques for the multi-level converter. In particular, a novel voltage-source method of multi-level modulation is introduced and compared to existing methods. The proposed method is discrete in nature and can therefore be readily implemented on a digital signal processor (DSP). The method is also readily extendable to any number of voltage levels. Results of experimental implementation are …
