Ideological Critique Of "Bbc Online": The Case Of The Northern Ireland Conflict, Rebecca Amesbury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The British Broadcasting Corporation is generally considered a reliable source for international news. Their web site includes a Northern Ireland news page, which provides daily coverage of the province including extensive information on the ongoing peace process. This study examines the online coverage of the Northern Ireland conflict in the year 2000. Through a textual analysis of 21 articles, an ideological critique of the BBC's rhetoric is provided. To reveal the ideological perspective of the BBC Online, the verbal text used in each article is carefully analyzed, the sources consulted are examined in terms of representation, and the images that …

Invasion Of Sphaeroma Terebrans, A Marine Isopod, On Pond Apple (Annona Glabra) Trees In A Tidally Influenced Freshwater Forested Wetland, Molly Kathleen Taylor Jan 2001

Invasion Of Sphaeroma Terebrans, A Marine Isopod, On Pond Apple (Annona Glabra) Trees In A Tidally Influenced Freshwater Forested Wetland, Molly Kathleen Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Saltwater intrusion is threatening coastal wetlands through alteration of the natural communities leading to native species loss. In southern Florida, the Pond Apple Slough is experiencing tidally driven saltwater intrusion, which is thought to be responsible for the invasion of a marine isopod, Sphaeroma terebrans, into the native, dominant pond apple trees. The isopod appears to be responsible for the death of pond apple trees in the site. The isopod's distribution on trees within the slough appears to be controlled by the period of inundation and distance from the source of saltwater. Restriction of tidal water entering the site may …

Internet Advertising: A Selectivity Model Approach To Analyzing Gender Differences In Information Processing, Lori D. Wolin Jan 2001

Internet Advertising: A Selectivity Model Approach To Analyzing Gender Differences In Information Processing, Lori D. Wolin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

While academic research has begun to probe Internet users' underlying beliefs, attitudes, and purchase intent toward Internet advertising, there has been no attempt to develop an underlying theory comparing male versus female users' Internet versus print advertising content information processing. A logical place to begin examining Internet advertising is in the sphere of gender which is a critical factor in developing sales and marketing strategy and commonly used as a basis for market segmentation. Through the application of the selectivity model (Meyers-Levy 1989) and interactivity model (Bezjian-Avery, Calder, and lacobucci 1998), an attempt to predict gendered reactions to Internet versus …

This research investigates the influence of chromate, as a conversion coating and as an inhibitor pigment, on the adhesion of epoxy coatings to an aluminum substrate. Epoxy coatings, with and without strontium chromate (SrCrO4) inhibitor pigment, are prepared according to manufacturers' specifications on AA2024-T3 substrates, with and without chromate conversion coatings. Specimens are exposed in an environmental chamber, cycling between high and low humidity conditions. After exposure, specimens are evaluated using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), ASTM D3359 cross-cut tape test, and an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope. From the evaluation it was determined that under these exposure conditions chromate does not …

Influences On The Performance Of Organizational Knowledge Transfer, Mark Robert Meckler Jan 2001

Influences On The Performance Of Organizational Knowledge Transfer, Mark Robert Meckler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Knowledge is a resource and an important asset that organizations leverage to attain their goals. In a competitive environment, efficient and effective transfer of knowledge within the firm is a strategic imperative. In each organization a system through which knowledge flows, arises by design and enactment. Like other resources, knowledge resources should flow to where they are needed, when they are needed. The flow of knowledge resources depends upon contextual characteristics of both the organization and the knowledge itself. This dissertation investigates characteristics that affect the internal flow of organizational knowledge between departments and types of employees. The study of …

Let Us Go Then, You And I: Teaching "The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock", Ava Whelan Pence

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The teaching of the Modernist movement can be frustrating for both teachers and students. "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," which is commonly found in high school textbooks, can be daunting for teachers who do not know how to approach it. The purpose of this document is to supply teachers with the knowledge they need to effectively teach this important poem. The Modernist movement as a whole is examined, as is the life of T. S. Eliot. The poem is elucidated on a stanza-by-stanza basis; this examination is followed by individual essays on theme, allusion, and metaphor. Last, the …

Measuring Performance In The Public Sector: An Examination Of Benchmarking Paramedic Response Times, Bruce J. Moeller Jan 2001

Measuring Performance In The Public Sector: An Examination Of Benchmarking Paramedic Response Times, Bruce J. Moeller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Measuring performance in the public sector has been a topic of heightened concern during the past decade. While enthusiasm remains high for its use, performance measurement has also been subject to increasing scrutiny. In this research, problems with definitional ambiguity and concerns of conscious errors in the reporting of performance are theorized to limit the usefulness of performance measurement and benchmarking. The research examined the use of "response time" as a key benchmark in the delivery of paramedic services in the State of Florida. The research used both quantitative analysis based on survey response data from 120 paramedic agencies and …

Naturalisme Fantastique Chez Maupassant: Stylistique Du "Horla", Assuied Veronique C Fois Jan 2001

Naturalisme Fantastique Chez Maupassant: Stylistique Du "Horla", Assuied Veronique C Fois

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Like most nineteenth-century French realists, Maupassant's interest in positivistic models of the human being, from Darwinian evolution to the new psychologies, led him to scientific readings, detailed documentations of "milieu," and contemporary subjects which he then treated with literary techniques drawn from both the realist Flaubert and the naturalist Zola. It is in extending these techniques to the fantastic, however, that Maupassant achieves an original and highly effective amalgam best characterized as "Le Naturalisme fantastique."

Narrative Analysis Of "The Miami Herald"'S Coverage Of The Elian Gonzalez Saga, Kristi D. Caravella Jan 2001

Narrative Analysis Of "The Miami Herald"'S Coverage Of The Elian Gonzalez Saga, Kristi D. Caravella

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study examines the coverage of an event that took place mostly in Miami, Florida and was reported on by The Miami Herald for more than six months. There are several issues that are addressed in this thesis. The primary hypothesis of this analysis is that the coverage of the Elian Gonzalez custody battle as it appeared in The Miami Herald uses the same narrative techniques as those used in fictional melodrama or soap operas. John Fiske's theory of melodrama as developed from Brown (1987) and a similar model used by Fiske (1987) is used to compare the specified piece …

Origin Of Glutamate Release In The Normoxic, Anoxic And Ischemic Isolated Turtle Cerebellum (Trachemys Scripta), John William Thompson Jan 2001

Origin Of Glutamate Release In The Normoxic, Anoxic And Ischemic Isolated Turtle Cerebellum (Trachemys Scripta), John William Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The uncontrolled release of glutamate is thought to be a key event in the death of the anoxic/ischemic mammalian brain. However the origin of glutamate, vesicular and/or cytoplasmic, is unknown. Likewise, the anoxic turtle releases a surge of glutamate upon anoxic depolarization. Therefore, this study investigated the origin of glutamate release in the isolated cerebellum of the freshwater turtle (Trachemys scripta). The results showed that: during anoxia, low extracellular glutamate levels are maintained, an ability lost during in vitro ischemia, by a reduction in glutamate release. Upon anoxic depolarization glutamate release originates from the cytoplasm. The lack of vesicular glutamate …

Nobles And Animals: Hierarchic Organization And Restoration In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The House Of The Seven Gables", Gregory Douglas Cecere Jan 2001

Nobles And Animals: Hierarchic Organization And Restoration In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The House Of The Seven Gables", Gregory Douglas Cecere

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Since its publication, critics and readers have been unsatisfied with the conclusion of The House of the Seven Gables and have viewed it as either inconsistent or a failure. After an analysis of the language, actions, and patterns of imagery in this work, along with The Scarlet Letter and The Blithedale Romance, it had become clear that there is in fact consistency to the conclusion of this text. These patterns suggest Hawthorne's conception of an ultimate hierarchical organization that favors characters who exhibit specific attributes. This organizational pattern can be disrupted through methods of recreating hierarchical order. Such attempts create …

Outlining A Theory About The Practical Use Of Theory: A Discourse-Practice Theoretic Analysis Of Academic Public Administration Symposia Genre, Cheedy Jaja Jan 2001

Outlining A Theory About The Practical Use Of Theory: A Discourse-Practice Theoretic Analysis Of Academic Public Administration Symposia Genre, Cheedy Jaja

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Academic public administration (APA) supposedly provides theoretic and programmatic guidance for bureaucratic public administration (BPA). But in reality, a relationship best characterized as a gap between "theory" (APA) and "practice" (BPA) is deemed to exist between the two social practices. Scholars who have analyzed APA theoretic literature ascribed the theory-practice problematic to methodological inadequacies, the implication being that investment in appropriate social science methods would enhance the intellectual rigor and social utility of APA discursive works. To provide a much richer perspective on the theory-practice problematic, this study conceptualizes theoretic discourses as social actions. When scholars theorize, they invariably want …

Play, Problem-Solving And Tool Use: Individual Differences In Preschool Children, Jeffrey Michael Gredlein Jan 2001

Play, Problem-Solving And Tool Use: Individual Differences In Preschool Children, Jeffrey Michael Gredlein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

While recent research has promoted play as an integral component of a child's cognitive functioning, tool-use has been relatively ignored in this discussion. It may be the case that these two abilities, especially constructive play and problem solving through the use of tools, emerging early in a child's life, have some connection in the formation of higher cognitive processing. From an evolutionary developmental perspective, three-year old children were observed in two free-play sessions and participated in a toy-retrieval task. Results indicate boys engaged in more constructive play than girls and were more likely to use tools to solve a problem. …

Reproductive Biology Of Lygodium Microphyllum And L. Japonicum, Two Invasive Fern Species In Florida, Michael Stephen Lott Jan 2001

Reproductive Biology Of Lygodium Microphyllum And L. Japonicum, Two Invasive Fern Species In Florida, Michael Stephen Lott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Lygodium microphyllum and L. japonicum are two non-indigenous invasive climbing ferns which are currently spreading through Florida. The reproductive biology of both species was examined to determine if their reproductive strategy partially explains this spread. Gametophytes of both species were grown in vitro as isolates and pairs to examine reproductive strategies. L. microphyllum appeared to be capable of both outcrossing and selfing, while in L. japonicum intragametophytic selfing appeared to be the primary mode of sexual reproduction. Outcrossing in L. microphyllum appeared to be the result of an antheridiogen system that affected sexual expression of neighboring gametophytes and subsequent sporophyte …

Remote Labs: Design And Implementation Issues, Samer M. Aoudi Jan 2001

Remote Labs: Design And Implementation Issues, Samer M. Aoudi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis proposes the use of remote laboratory experiments in distance education as a tool to add a reality factor to the distance learning process, thus combining the convenience of distance education with the effectiveness of the traditional physical campus, through its laboratories and technological resources. Moreover, this research studies the different aspects of distance education and remote labs and then provides a proposition to develop an effective remote laboratory setup. Furthermore, it introduces and discusses the different components of a general remote lab experiment and applies the proposed process to an actual remote lab experiment, namely 'The Characteristics of …

Seafinding Orientation Of Hatchlings Exposed To Filtered Lighting: Effects Of Varying Beach Conditions, Susan Mary Tuxbury Jan 2001

Seafinding Orientation Of Hatchlings Exposed To Filtered Lighting: Effects Of Varying Beach Conditions, Susan Mary Tuxbury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Under normal conditions, hatchling sea turtles crawl toward the ocean but streetlights placed on coastal roadways can attract the turtles toward land. Two light filters were designed to exclude the shorter light wavelengths most attractive to turtles. I did laboratory tests to determine if green turtle and loggerhead hatchlings oriented normally ("seaward") in the presence of filtered lighting. Light passed through either filter (#2422 acrylic and NLW) attracted the turtles unless coastal cues (an elevated horizon) were strong or background (full moon) illumination was present. Green turtles and loggerheads responded differently to the same filters, indicating that neither filter provided …

Teaching Sight Words To Students With Mental Retardation And Learning Disabilities: Constant Time Delay Versus Interspersal Of Known Items, Melissa Gail Knight Jan 2001

Teaching Sight Words To Students With Mental Retardation And Learning Disabilities: Constant Time Delay Versus Interspersal Of Known Items, Melissa Gail Knight

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study compared the efficacy and efficiency of using constant time delay (CTD) with interspersal of known items (IKI) paired with an error correction technique to teach sight words to students with mild mental retardation and learning disabilities. Time delay is a technique that transfers stimulus control from a controlling prompt (a prompt that results in correct task performance) to the discriminative stimulus (stimulus presented before a response can occur) by delaying the presentation of the prompt after the stimulus has been presented. During the initial trial, the delay between prompt and stimulus is at 0-seconds; during all other trials …

The Use Of Nesting Initiation Dates Of Roseate Spoonbills ( Ajaia Ajaja) In Northeastern Florida Bay As An Ecosystem Indicator For Water Management Practices, 1935--1999, Rodriguez Elsa Marcella Alvear

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Quantity and timing of freshwater flow from the Everglades to Florida Bay varied under different water management practices in the twentieth century, with negative ecological repercussions. Ecological indicators that respond to differences in hydrology, such as wading bird colony dynamics, can be used for hydrological restoration projects. I examined the possibility of using timing of nesting of Roseate Spoonbills (Ajaia ajaja) in northeastern Florida Bay as an ecological indicator. Nest initiation dates (N = 51) from 1936--1999 (x = November 25) were calculated from numerous published and unpublished sources. The dates were strikingly consistent and did not show significant trends …

Underwater Analysis Of The Behavioral Development Of Free-Ranging Atlantic Spotted Dolphin Calves (Birth To 4 Years Of Age), Jessica Ann Bayer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This investigation is the first to focus on the underwater behaviors and development of free-ranging Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) mothers and calves. Underwater video recordings of 30 mother/calf pairs, during the calves' first three years of life, and 10 additional videos of four-year-old calves, were analyzed. Behavioral event frequencies were compared to the calf's age bracket (i.e. year-one, two, three and four). Results demonstrate an increase in calf independence in year-four shown by a significant reduction in Nursing Act behaviors, significantly more Feeding/Foraging behaviors, and increased behaviors performed in the proximity of individuals other than the mother or alone. …

William A. Dunning Revisited: The Mind Or Malice Of Reconstruction?, Kathleen P. Barsalou Jan 2001

William A. Dunning Revisited: The Mind Or Malice Of Reconstruction?, Kathleen P. Barsalou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Historian William A. Dunning was responsible for the first scholarly treatment of the Reconstruction era. The terms which his contemporaries used to describe him differ strikingly from those historians may choose today. Since the 1930s, American historiography has reflected the new emphasis on sociology and psychology with a radical shift in subject matter away from the traditional political focus. Surely, certain truths are known to the modern historian which were not known to those who lived earlier. However, to discard the insights of one generation of historians is, perhaps, to ignore some of history's most important resources.

Mary Mccarthy Writes Her Truth: Memories Of A Catholic Girlhood And The Expansion Of The Autobiographical Tradition, Roxanne H. Hughes Jan 2001

Mary Mccarthy Writes Her Truth: Memories Of A Catholic Girlhood And The Expansion Of The Autobiographical Tradition, Roxanne H. Hughes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Modernist and postmodernist writer Mary McCarthy was a unique feminist writer. Throughout her writing career, which spanned nearly fifty years, McCarthy authored three autobiographical volumes, nine volumes of fiction, two books about art, and numerous essays and reviews. Regardless of the critical response to her writing, McCarthy wrote her truth her way. McCarthy did not capitulate to traditional patriarchal notions of autobiographical content and form; rather, she challenged patriarchal autobiographical traditions in her texts. This thesis examines McCarthy's first autobiographical volume, the 1957 Memories of a Catholic Girlhood, which describes McCarthy's orphanhood in post-World War I America. The introductory chapter …

A Socio-Historical Study Of The Construction Of Knowledge In Secondary Media Education In Western Australia - Whose Knowledge?, Robyn Quin Jan 2001

A Socio-Historical Study Of The Construction Of Knowledge In Secondary Media Education In Western Australia - Whose Knowledge?, Robyn Quin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis investigates the history of the construction of knowledge in the school subject media studies using the Western Australian experience as the case for the study. It seeks to explain why the subject media studies looks and sounds the way it does today through the production of a genealogy of the subject. The problems addressed are first, why was this subject introduced into the curriculum in the 1970s. Secondly, how has the knowledge in the subject been defined and contested, how and why has it changed in the course of the subject’s history. Thirdly, which knowledge attains the status …
