Polymerized Oligopeptide-Surfactant Chiral Micelles, Isiah M. Warner, Eugene J. Billiot, Shahab A. Shamsi, Stefan J. Thibodeaux Aug 2001

Polymerized Oligopeptide-Surfactant Chiral Micelles, Isiah M. Warner, Eugene J. Billiot, Shahab A. Shamsi, Stefan J. Thibodeaux

College of Science Patents

Chiral separations can be enhanced through the use of polymerized dipeptide-surfactant or oligopeptide-surfactant chiral micelles. Because polymerized micelles eliminate much of the complex dynamic behavior associated with conventional micelles, polymerized chiral micelles have stronger chiral recognition properties than do otherwise-identical, "conventional" or non-polymerized chiral micelles. Recovery of chiral ligands from polymerized chiral micelles is often easier, as the chiral ligands may typically be recovered by simple extraction with an appropriate organic solvent. By contrast, recovering the solute from a conventional, non-polymerized micellar medium by extraction with an organic solvent frequently results in the formation of troublesome emulsion systems. Polymerized chiral …

W-2 In 2001: Wisconsin Works At Welfare Reform, Jennifer Ryan, Randy Desonia

National Health Policy Forum

This site visit took federal participants to Wisconsin, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of welfare reform. This site visit focused on Wisconsin Works (W-2), a statewide effort to reduce the state's welfare caseload and send clients to work. In particular, site visitors examined welfare reform policy, service delivery, and financing issues in Milwaukee, at that time the home of 85 percent of W-2 participants. Site visit participants heard from state officials, private-sector representatives, researchers, and advocates on the structure of W-2, its operating policies, and the effects of program implementation on low-income families. They toured a variety of …

A Reconsideration Of The Physicians’ Immunity Statute, Steve Dirksen Aug 2001

A Reconsideration Of The Physicians’ Immunity Statute, Steve Dirksen

Duke Law & Technology Review

The author assesses the "physicians' immunity statute" from legal policy, ethical, and financial perspectives, and concludes that alternatives such as licensure and monetary incentives would better serve the goal of encouraging invention more effectively by rewarding it.

World Dairy Product Trade: Analysis With A Mixed Complementarity Problem Formulation, Charles F. Nicholson, Phillip M. Bishop

Agribusiness

World trade in dairy products is being transformed by trade policy liberalization and technological change in dairy processing. The mixed complementarity problem formulation to modeling product-specific dairy trade can overcome a number of the limitations of existing optimization models, and can facilitate desirable extensions to previous analyses.

Communication About End Of Life For Patients Living With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Scoping Review Of The Empirical Evidence, Shelagh K. Genuis, Westerly Luth, Sandra Campbell, Tania M. Bubela, Wendy S. Johnston Aug 2001

Communication About End Of Life For Patients Living With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Scoping Review Of The Empirical Evidence, Shelagh K. Genuis, Westerly Luth, Sandra Campbell, Tania M. Bubela, Wendy S. Johnston

Office of the Provost

Background: Communication about end of life, including advance care planning, life-sustaining therapies, palliative care, and end-of-life options, is critical for the clinical management of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients. The empirical evidence base for this communication has not been systematically examined.
Objective: To support evidence-based communication guidance by (1) analyzing the scope and nature of research on health communication about end of life for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; and (2) summarizing resultant recommendations.
Methods: A scoping review of empirical literature was conducted following recommended practices. Fifteen health-related and three legal databases were searched; 296 articles were screened for inclusion/exclusion criteria; and quantitative …

The Utility Of Measures Of Attention And Situation Awareness For Quantifying Telepresence, Jennifer M. Riley Aug 2001

The Utility Of Measures Of Attention And Situation Awareness For Quantifying Telepresence, Jennifer M. Riley

Theses and Dissertations

Telepresence is defined as the sensation of being present at a remote robot task site while physically present at a local control station. This concept has received substantial attention in the recent past as a result of hypothesized benefits of "presence" experiences on human task performance with teleoperation systems. Human factors research, however, has made little progress in establishing a relationship between the concept of telepresence and teleoperator performance. This has been attributed to the multidimensional nature of telepresence, the lack of appropriate studies to elucidate this relationship, and the lack of a valid and reliable, objective measure of telepresence. …

A Comparison Of Three Rapid Evaluation Procedures For Pine Savanna Wetlands, Cynthia Joan Henderson Aug 2001

A Comparison Of Three Rapid Evaluation Procedures For Pine Savanna Wetlands, Cynthia Joan Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

Inception of the Clean Water Act in 1972 resulted in regulation of activities in wetlands through Section 404. Regulatory agencies like the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) have tried to find methods to rapidly evaluate wetlands. This study compares three rapid evaluation methods, Hydrogeomorphic Approach (HGM), Wetlands Rapid Assessment Procedure (WRAP), and Wetland Evaluation System (WES), based on their scoring of a group of reference and mitigation wetland sites. Repeatability was studied by scoring a group of sites twice. The non-parametric Spearman?s correlation was used to compare the three methods. In this study, HGM was most repeatable followed by …

Evaluating Data Averaging Techniques For High Gradient Flow Fields Through Uncertainty Analysis, Boon Liang Heng Aug 2001

Evaluating Data Averaging Techniques For High Gradient Flow Fields Through Uncertainty Analysis, Boon Liang Heng

Theses and Dissertations

Experimental data from two cold airflow turbine tests were evaluated. The two tests had different, relatively high gradient flow fields at the turbine exit. The objective of the research was to evaluate data requirements, including the averaging techniques, the number of measurements, and the types of measurements needed, for high gradient flow fields. Guidelines could then be established for future tests that could allow reduction in test time and costs. An enormous amount of data was collected for both tests. These test data were then manipulated in various ways to study the effects of the averaging techniques, the number of …
