Selected Economic Implications And Policy Aspects Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Evert Van Der Sluis, Matthew Diersen, Thomas Dobbs
Selected Economic Implications And Policy Aspects Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Evert Van Der Sluis, Matthew Diersen, Thomas Dobbs
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The paper provides an overview of the types of economic costs, benefits, and risks involved with agricultural biotechnology at the farm level, at the market level, and for the farm and food system as a whole. Both advantages and disadvantages of agricultural biotechnology are discussed. Among the drivers of the US domestic and international consumer demand for transgenic crop products discussed in the paper are environmental and food safety concerns. A comparison is made between a 'science-based' regulatory framework and a policy based on the precautionary principle. The authors argue that open dialogue is needed for achieving improved public understanding …

Relationships Between Community Attributes And Residential Preference In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Soonchul Ko
Relationships Between Community Attributes And Residential Preference In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Soonchul Ko
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This paper examines the residential preferences of rural Nebraskans. Data from the 1998 Nebraska Rural Poll were analyzed at two levels. First, the residential preferences of rural Nebraskans were compared to those of the general population of the United States. Second, the relationships between the attributes of the respondents' current community and their residential preferences were examined. Current community size, the social attributes of the community, and evaluations of local community services were all determined to be important influences on residential preferences. The findings illustrate the possible positive impact on rural Great Plains communities of enhancing social interaction and creatively …
From Feikema To Manfred, From The Big Sioux Basin To The Northern Plains, Arthur R. Huseboe
From Feikema To Manfred, From The Big Sioux Basin To The Northern Plains, Arthur R. Huseboe
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In 1991, when he had just turned seventy-nine years old, Frederick Manfred was interviewed at his Luverne, Minnesota, home by three young writers for an article that was to appear in the Agassiz Review that spring.1 He answered questions about his earliest urges to become a novelist when he was writing under the pen name Feike Feikema, questions about people who had encouraged his ambitions, and about the autobiographical sources for his novels, or his rumes, as he preferred to call them. He was asked about his writing methods and the motivations for some of his characters and …

SETTING: The ladies’ parlour of a wayside inn in ——shire, England. Sometime in the early 1800s. A sofa, three chairs and two small tables are grouped companionably before the upstage fireplace with mantel. A door stage right leads to the garden and a door to the left leads into the inn.
NOTE: During the dream sequences, the major character plays an older version of herself while the other ladies don small accessories and play the other characters in the dream. The furniture is slightly rearranged to suggest a different room.

Honors And The Creative Arts In Nursing: Music Therapy To Decrease Anxiety In Critical Care Patients, Ellen Buckner, Cynthia Leach-Fuller
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
In nursing education, we strive for a delicate balance between the science and the art of nursing. While curricular objectives address standards of practice assuring competencies in pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical fundamentals, medical nursing, surgical nursing, and other domains of health science, we also purport to produce a practitioner with sensitivity and compassion. The honors in nursing option, begun in 2000 at UAB, has allowed us to push the creative side of nursing to a higher level. Honors students have clearly taken this opportunity with enthusiasm. Our first nursing honors graduate, Ms. Cynthia Leach-Fuller, investigated an application of music therapy in …
The Contemporary Role Of The Federal Government In The Great Plains Economy: A Comprehensive Examination Of Federal Spending And Related Fiscal Activities, Sam Cordes, Evert Van Der Sluis
The Contemporary Role Of The Federal Government In The Great Plains Economy: A Comprehensive Examination Of Federal Spending And Related Fiscal Activities, Sam Cordes, Evert Van Der Sluis
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Great Plains economy is influenced much more by federal spending and taxation than is the nation as a whole. Results were generated from analyzing federal fiscal activities at three different levels: a state-by-state analysis, an analysis of the 478-county region, and an analysis by county category for two Great Plains states (Nebraska and South Dakota). In several Great Plains states, federal spending represents well in excess of 25% of the state's economic activity. Federal spending, especially farm program payments, are of particular significance to nonmetropolitan counties in the Great Plains. This level of federal dependency, coupled with recent and …

Characteristics Of In-Migrants To The Northern Great Plains: Survey Results From Nebraska And North Dakota, F. Larry Leistritz, Sam Cordes, Randall Sell, John C. Allen Iii, Rebecca Vogt
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Recent employment growth in the northern Great Plains may be stimulating increased in-migration. This study, expanding on our initial report (Leistritz et al. 2000), seeks to identify the salient characteristics of recent in-migrants to Nebraska and North Dakota, using data from mailed surveys conducted in Nebraska in 1996 and North Dakota in 1997. The survey respondents were generally younger than the populations of Nebraska and North Dakota overall; about 60% were between 21 and 40 years old. The educational level of the migrants was also higher than that of the states' populations overall-45% of the new residents were college graduates …

Review Of Pigs, Profits, And Rural Communities Edited By Kendall M. Thu And E. Paul Durrenberger, Mark S. Honeyman
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
These are historic times of rapid change in US agriculture, particularly the swine production industry. Rapid change creates controversy. Controversy surrounding the industrialization of the US swine industry is often over-simplified as a two-sided debate. In Pigs, Profits, and Rural Communities, editors Kendall Thu and Paul Durrenberger-anthropologists-effectively gather and present the multi-dimensional depth and breadth of the profoundly rapid change in the swine industry with a collection of eleven perspectives plus their own introductory comments.
A Phenomenological Case For The Family Farmer As An Environmental Steward, Jim Hanson
A Phenomenological Case For The Family Farmer As An Environmental Steward, Jim Hanson
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This phenomenological analysis concludes that the American family farmer is a steward of the environment in a way that the corporate farmer is not. As a study of consciousness, phenomenology recognizes that family farmers have more sensitive and less selective experience because of living in the farm environment. It draws from the first-hand accounts articulated by family farmers-accounts that reflect their firsthand and direct experiences of the farm environment. Although considered to be irrelevant by many scientists and statisticians, phenomenological accounts of direct experience are important starting points for the scientific study of farmers and their knowledge of environmental problems.

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 3 - On The Importance Of Suggestibility Research In Assessing The Credibility Of Children’S Testimony, David A. Martindale
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
In the spring of 1999, Professor Thomas Lyon of the University of Southern California Law School published a lengthy law review article in which he argued that the introduction into evidence of research on the suggestibility of child witnesses was not of assistance to triers of fact.1 Lyon’s article has found its way into judicial training packets and has been posted to electronic bulletin boards sponsored by organizations with interest in custody evaluations, psychology and law, and related topics. Because judges are soon likely to encounter arguments based upon Lyon’s article, I wish to alert judges to what I believe …

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 3 - On Judicial Independence Under Pressure, Procter Hug Jr.
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
Although our legal system is the envy of much of the world, we hear much criticism in our own country of lawyers and judges. But we should take real pride in the contribution of judges and lawyers to the formation of our country. Of the 55 delegates to amend the Articles of Confederation, which we now call the Constitutional Convention, 60% were lawyers or judges. Throughout the succeeding years, lawyers and judges have guided the continuing development of our system of government. I stress continuing development because it is not something like climbing a hill when we can say, “Ahhah! …

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 3 - Recent Civil Decisions Of The United States Supreme Court: The 2000-2001 Term, Charles H. Whitebread
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
The Supreme Court’s role in the 2000 presidential election sparked intense national debate and will be the sole decision for which this term will be remembered. Although no other decisions rose to same level of political or popular significance, the Court confronted various civil-law topics of particular interest. Among them were issues concerning immigrant rights, interpretation of significant statutes such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, and important matters regarding the First Amendment and federalism.

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 3 - Let’S Not Exaggerate The Suggestibility Of Children, Thomas D. Lyon
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
I’m grateful to Dr. Martindale for introducing the reader to an important and lively debate among practitioners and academics over the relevance of recent research on children’s suggestibility. In my Cornell Law Review article, I argued that the recent research on suggestibility was inspired by highly coercive interviewing techniques in widely publicized cases that are not the norm in child sexual abuse investigations. These techniques include telling children that they have been abused, telling children that a particular person is the abuser, and asking children to imagine details regarding how abuse could have taken place. Moreover, I argued that the …
