Leadership, Episodes And Change In The Early Kanawha Valley, Stephen Annese Smoot Jan 2001

Leadership, Episodes And Change In The Early Kanawha Valley, Stephen Annese Smoot

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The frontier period of the Kanawha Valley provides an interesting example of the sometimes dramatic change that occurred on the fringes of American civilization as it inched across the continent. Within twelve years of the creation of the county, it had developed from an embattled military buffer region into a quiet backwoods town. For the first six years, Indian attacks constantly assailed the settlements along the Kanawha River. Very likely, without the quality of leadership in the towns and military posts, the population would have retreated into safer regions of Virginia. Somehow men such as George Clendenin, founder of the …

The Perceptions Of Traditional And Nontraditional Students Toward The Level I Spanish Textbook., Tyrone Frederick Parker Jan 2001

The Perceptions Of Traditional And Nontraditional Students Toward The Level I Spanish Textbook., Tyrone Frederick Parker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study posed ten hypotheses based on 13 pedagogical elements contained in the literature concerning the unique needs of nontraditional students. The study tested the hypotheses that traditional and nontraditional students' evaluation of the foreign language textbook would not differ based on gender, full-time or part-time status, age, having a high school diploma or a general equivalency diploma (GED), and grade point average. The textbook evaluation instrument chosen for this study was the Proficiency-Oriented Textbook Evaluation Form. It was chosen for this research study because of its proven usefulness in evaluating the value of foreign language textbooks and because all …

This study analyzed the economic impacts of Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which was passed by Congress to eliminate workplace discrimination on the basis of disability. Specifically, the main objectives of this study were to answer five research questions and estimate an interaction model. The ADA was intended to spark an economic revolution by drastically increasing the employment rate of people with disabilities. Because of the potential societal impacts, it is vital to successful future economic planning and policymaking that the economic effects of the law be examined. Various datasets from 1985 through 2000 …

An Assessment Of Assertion Skills Among Adults With Mild Mental Retardation., Vicki Ann Lumley Jan 2001

An Assessment Of Assertion Skills Among Adults With Mild Mental Retardation., Vicki Ann Lumley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although assertion is a topic that has been the focus of a great deal of research, little attention has been paid to assertive behavior and individuals with mental retardation. The purpose of the current study was to assess the assertion skills of adults with mild mental retardation using comparison samples of high assertive and low assertive college students. Indirect assessment measures (i.e., self-report), direct behavioral measures (i.e., role-play assessment), and social validity ratings (i.e., ratings of interpersonal attractiveness provided by blind raters) were used, and the results compared. Self-report assessment was found to be an acceptable method of evaluating assertion …

Recommendations Of The Joint Conference Jan 2001

Recommendations Of The Joint Conference

Georgia Law Review

Health-care and financial planning for the client with diminished capacity requires a holistic approach that includes consideration of the realities of dementia progression, cultural and linguistic diversity, capacity that may vary over time, issues of surrogate decision making, and recognition of the client's vulnerability to abuse, neglect, exploitation and undue influence. A goal of legal planning should be to limit the use of guardianship to the greatest extent possible.

Creating And Supporting The Proxy-Decider: The Lawyer-Proxy Relationship, Nancy N. Dubler Jan 2001

Creating And Supporting The Proxy-Decider: The Lawyer-Proxy Relationship, Nancy N. Dubler

Georgia Law Review

Advance directives have been identified as the "quick fix" of bioethics. The logic goes something like this: If we could only get patients to tell us, in advance of disability, the specifics of the health care they would want to receive in the future, we could put our ethical and legal qualms aside and march ahead with care that we know is patient appropriate and legally protected. If we could only get the patient to commit, we could proceed with moral certainty and risk assurance. If we could only be given explicit instructions, we could act accordingly and be comfortable …

Predictive Genetic Testing For Alzheimer's Disease In Long-Term Care Insurance, Mark A. Rothstein Jan 2001

Predictive Genetic Testing For Alzheimer's Disease In Long-Term Care Insurance, Mark A. Rothstein

Georgia Law Review

The promise of new genetic research is the ability to prevent, treat, and cure a wide range of physical and mental disorders-both monogenic and complex disorders. While astonishing progress has been made in gene discovery and the development of genetic tests, progress has been much slower in developing medicalinterventions. Consequently, there is likely to be a gap of varying and indetermi- nate time-lasting years or decades-between the ability to identify and predict genetic risk and the ability to prevent, treat, or cure the condition. The gap between the ability to predict genetic risk and the ability to ameliorate the risk …

Public Policy Implications Of Liability Regimes For Injuries Caused By Persons With Alzheimer's Disease, Edward P. Richards Jan 2001

Public Policy Implications Of Liability Regimes For Injuries Caused By Persons With Alzheimer's Disease, Edward P. Richards

Georgia Law Review

People in the United States and the developed world are living longer than ever before. While gains in the average life expectancy have been modest, these gains greatly underestimate the growth of the elderly population. Most of this elderly population is healthier and more active in everyday life than people of comparable age in decades past. The amelioration of many of the diseases of age has accentuated the problems of the chronic diseases for which there are no effective treatments. Perhaps the most devastating of these is Alzheimer's disease, a progressive dementia leading to incapacity and death. As discussed in …

Alternative Education In West Virginia: Perceptions Of Programs, Leadership And Success., Tammy Kay Brock-Fowler Jan 2001

Alternative Education In West Virginia: Perceptions Of Programs, Leadership And Success., Tammy Kay Brock-Fowler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

More and more students are being labeled at-risk in our educational system. These students are often behind academically, have dropped out of school, or have been suspended or expelled from conventional high schools. In West Virginia in 1995, 4,008 students did not complete high school (West Virginia University Survey Research Center, 1977). Alternative schools or programs are a direct result of a need to provide options to students who cannot be accommodated by conventional public schools. Alternative Education Program in West Virginia is defined as an authorized departure from the regular school program designed to provide educational and social development …

An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya Jan 2001

An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The term quality of life has been described as a vague entity (Grayson and Young, 1994) and conceptualizing it, has proved to be difficult. Nevertheless, understanding how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction is important because these subjective evaluations determine life adjustment and mobility behavior and is the basis of demand for public actions. Additionally, more effective social programs can be designed based on the knowledge of how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction and avoid problems that may result because the perceptions of the planners and policy makers do not always coincide with those of …

An Expanded Model Of Adolescent Caregiving: Its Efficacy And Relation To Adolescent Problem Behavior., Lesley Anne Epperly Cottrell Jan 2001

An Expanded Model Of Adolescent Caregiving: Its Efficacy And Relation To Adolescent Problem Behavior., Lesley Anne Epperly Cottrell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite annual fluctuations in the exact percentages of adolescents in the United States who are involved with problem behaviors such as alcohol consumption, unprotected sexual intercourse, and illicit drug use over the past decade, a large proportion of youth have been introduced to, and continue to engage in these behaviors. In response, researchers and clinicians have continued their search for variables that are correlated with adolescent risk involvement including variables within the family context. Previous research has linked parental monitoring (i.e., knowledge of an adolescent's whereabouts and activities) and parents' appropriate modeling of behaviors to reduced adolescent risk involvement. Problem …

Improving Medication Adherence For Children With Asthma: Objective Monitoring And Feedback As An Intervention For Inhaled Corticosteroid Use., Scott Allen Spaulding Jan 2001

Improving Medication Adherence For Children With Asthma: Objective Monitoring And Feedback As An Intervention For Inhaled Corticosteroid Use., Scott Allen Spaulding

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Nonadherence to asthma medication is a persistent problem. Contingency management has been used to improve pediatric compliance to inhaled corticosteroids. But token systems require time and attention to design and maintain, creating a challenge for busy outpatient clinics. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention that might more easily be implemented by medical staff and parents: objective monitoring of medication use and feedback regarding errors in technique and compliance as an intervention to improve children's adherence to inhaled corticosteroids. Pediatric patients diagnosed with bronchial asthma for at least 6 months, receiving long-term corticosteroid …

Research Article Introductions In Thai: Genre Analysis Of Academic Writing., Chalermsri Jogthong Jan 2001

Research Article Introductions In Thai: Genre Analysis Of Academic Writing., Chalermsri Jogthong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study presents an analysis of research article introductions (RAIs) written in Thai by Thai academic writers. The analysis is based on 40 Thai RAIs taken from Thai journals in educational and medical fields. The rhetorical characteristics and linguistic features of the RAIs are examined using the CARS model proposed by Swales (1990). The results show that the pattern of studied RAIs supports the general framework presented by Swales but the specific steps in the introductions are less consistent with the model. The Thai writers avoided criticizing and evaluating the works of others. They adopted different strategies in establishing a …

Mechanisms Of Chromium(Vi)-Induced Carcinogenesis: The Involvement Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Signal Transduction Pathway., Suwei Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although Cr(VI)-containing compounds have been widely recognized as carcinogens for over 100 years, the mechanisms of their actions are not fully understood. The overall objective of this study is to investigate the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis, focusing on tumor suppressor protein p53 and regulatory signal transduction pathways. In the present study, the role of ROS in p53 activation was investigated and the following conclusions were obtained: (a) Cr(VI) is able to activate p53 protein; (b) ROS, especially ·OH radical, are responsible for the p53 activation induced by Cr(VI). In addition, we presented a mechanism of …

The Influence Of Supervision Training On Supervisor Self-Efficacy Among Doctoral Interns At University Counseling Centers., Sarah Jane Haley Jan 2001

The Influence Of Supervision Training On Supervisor Self-Efficacy Among Doctoral Interns At University Counseling Centers., Sarah Jane Haley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A group of 145 clinical and counseling psychology doctoral students interning at APA-accredited university counseling center sites completed the Supervision Self-efficacy Questionnaire (SSQ) to determine differences in supervisor self-efficacy among different supervision training groups (e.g. no doctoral supervision course, a didactic supervision course, or a didactic-practicum supervision course) during their doctoral training. The SSQ was developed for this study; it was adapted from The Supervisory Focus and Style Questionnaire (SFSQ) (Yager, Wilson, Brewer & Kinnetz, 1989), which is based on Bernard's (1997) discrimination model of supervision. A one-way, between-subjects ANOVA found no significant differences in overall supervisor self-efficacy among the …
