A Survey Of Selected Drinking Behaviors Of Student-Koreans At Kook-Min University, Sangmin Kim

Graduate Research Papers

Students, aged 18 to 25, face many responsibilities and challenges such as social development, higher education activities, vocational activities, living arrangements, seeking marital bonds, and developing economic independence. For the college and university student, it is a major stage as a young adult to pursue a higher educational goal and to learn new ways of relating to other students before stepping into a real job environment (Prendergast, 1994). However, along with their responsibilities and personal development, young people might be exposed to negative sides of adulthood. While the majority of college students are responsible for maintaining positive health, it is …

Motivational Barriers : Technology Use By Minorities, Laura Dayton

Graduate Research Papers

This research paper reviews motivational factors that affect the use of technology by minorities. The technology gap is taking a toll on individuals, communities, and Society at large. Sixty percent of jobs require skills with technology. Students with limited or no access to computers are falling behind in developing skills that are needed in college and in the job market. This lack of infrastructure strikes some as particularly worrisome because it comes at a time when the federal government is forcing individuals and communities to become more self-sufficient. The research cited in this paper addresses the existence of a digital …

Effect Of Creatine On Performance, Tom Smith Jan 2001

Effect Of Creatine On Performance, Tom Smith

Graduate Research Papers

Among the nutritional substances that are suspected of having a performance-enhancing potential, creatine monohydrate has become one of the most popular in recent years. More than 2.5 million kg of creatine was estimated to being consumed in the past year. This can make evident that the expectations of the benefit of creatine by people is very high (Terjung, 2000).

The Olympic motto is "Citius, Altius, Fortius." These three Latin words, translated into English as Swifter, Higher, Stronger, symbolize the Olympic spirit and underlie the ultimate goal for Olympic and any athletes in their quest for sport success, which includes the …

Examining The Need For Improved Health Education For Underserved Populations In Selected Eastern Caribbean Basin Nations, Linda K. George Miller Jan 2001

Examining The Need For Improved Health Education For Underserved Populations In Selected Eastern Caribbean Basin Nations, Linda K. George Miller

Graduate Research Papers

The Eastern Caribbean Basin (ECB) is comprised of several diverse islands that share many common characteristics. As tourism has increased in most of the islands, chronic disease patterns have also increased. The governments of these island nations are well aware of the need for increased health education efforts, but adequate personnel are not always available locally.

Complications from chronic disease are escalating in the aging population. Efforts to expand health education efforts among the islands would assist in reducing these complications and early deaths.

Diseases often seen on the ECB islands include hypertension, cardiovascular and heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and …

An Enzymatic Method For The Measurement Of Magnesium, Joseph Murphy Jan 2001

An Enzymatic Method For The Measurement Of Magnesium, Joseph Murphy

Theses

Magnesium is quantitatively the most important intracellular divalent cation (4), and has been found to serve in a wide range of enzymatic reactions (2). Studies have shown that up to ten percent of hospital patients may have hypomagnesaemia (6).

Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) under highly specified conditions is the de facto reference method for magnesium measurement but only about ten per cent of laboratories routinely use this method (4). This is because AAS is time-consuming, requires specialised equipment and a certain level of expertise, and may be hazardous due to the use of inflammable gases. Colourimetric methods e.g. calmagite are …

Children's Song-Makers As Messengers Of Hope: Participatory Research With Implications For Teacher Educators, Peter J. Baird Jan 2001

Children's Song-Makers As Messengers Of Hope: Participatory Research With Implications For Teacher Educators, Peter J. Baird

Doctoral Dissertations

Pete Seeger, Ella Jenkins, Suni Paz and six other leading children's musicians in the U.S contributed their experience to this study about the crucial role of music and singing for social justice in children's lives and its shrinking presence in U.S. pre-school and elementary schools. The study built its theoretical framework on arts and music education, transformative education, and folk and socially conscious children's music. Participatory research, based on the revolutionary education theories of Paulo Freire, guided the dialogues with the participants. These activist singer-songwriters were asked how they define social justice, how they involve children in singing, and what …

Infection And Transovarial Transmission Of Rickettsiae In Dermacentor Variabilis Acquired By Artificial Feeding, K. R. Macaluso, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Shane M. Ceraul, A. F. Azad Jan 2001

Infection And Transovarial Transmission Of Rickettsiae In Dermacentor Variabilis Acquired By Artificial Feeding, K. R. Macaluso, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Shane M. Ceraul, A. F. Azad

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In this study we examined the efficiency of an in vitro feeding technique using glass microcapillaries as a method of establishing rickettsiae-infected lines of ticks. To quantify the volume ingested by ticks during microcapillary feeding, the incorporation of radiolabeled amino acids in tick gut and hemolymph was calculated. Fifteen of 18 ticks consumed between 0.06 μl and 6.77μl. However, ingestion of fluid was not correlated to weight gain during capillary feeding. Uninfected and partially fed laboratory-reared female Dermacentor variabilis ticks were exposed to either Rickettsia montana- or Rickettsia rhipicephali-infected Vero cells via microcapillary tubes, returned to rabbit hosts, …

Reproduction, Population Structure, And Recruitment Limitation In A Bay Scallop (Argopecten Irradians Lamarck) Population From New Jersey, Usa, Paul Bologna, A. E. Wilbur, K. W. Able Jan 2001

Reproduction, Population Structure, And Recruitment Limitation In A Bay Scallop (Argopecten Irradians Lamarck) Population From New Jersey, Usa, Paul Bologna, A. E. Wilbur, K. W. Able

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A bay scallop, Argopecten irradians irradians (Lamarck 1819), population was studied in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, USA to investigate the distribution, reproduction and genetic structure of the population because virtually nothing is known about this species in this region. Argopecten irradians irradians densities varied among eelgrass (Zostera marina Lamarck) beds in 1998 (range 0.12-1.0 individuals per 10m transect), but were virtually absent from the region in 1999. The absence of adults in 1999 may have been due to limited spat recruitment and survival in the fall of 1998, which may be attributed to a reduction in above ground biomass …

The Employment Law Decisions Of The October 2000 Term Of The Supreme Court: A Review And Analysis, Ann C. Hodges Jan 2001

The Employment Law Decisions Of The October 2000 Term Of The Supreme Court: A Review And Analysis, Ann C. Hodges

Law Faculty Publications

During the October 2000 Term, the Supreme Court delivered major setbacks for employees in Circuit City Stores, Inc. v. Adams, which upheld mandatory and binding arbitration of federal and state employment discrimination claims through arbitration clauses forced upon employees as a condition of employment, and in Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama v. Garrett, which shielded state employers from federal court law suits brought under the Americans with Disabilities Act by victims of disability discrimination in employment. Employees escaped harm in Pollard v. E.I du Pont de Nemours & Co., in which the Court followed nearly unanimous circuit …

The Bush Administration And Appeals Courts Nominees, Carl W. Tobias Jan 2001

The Bush Administration And Appeals Courts Nominees, Carl W. Tobias

Law Faculty Publications

On May 9, President George H.W. Bush announced his first set of nominees for the United States Courts of Appeals. With a White House ceremony which chief executives traditionally reserve for United States Supreme Court designees, the president introduced eleven individuals whom he proposed for vacancies on the federal intermediate appellate courts. Submitting a package of appeals court nominees might seem to be a relatively mundane exercise. However, the developments that led to Bush's recommendations, the staging of this event, and the candidates tendered actually reveal much about contemporary judicial selection, which is a critical feature of constitutional governance. For …

Release Of Cotesia Flavipes Cameron For Biological Control Of Cereal Stemborers In Two Ecological Zones In Mozambique, D. Cugala, W. A. Overholt, L. Santos, D. Giga Jan 2001

Release Of Cotesia Flavipes Cameron For Biological Control Of Cereal Stemborers In Two Ecological Zones In Mozambique, D. Cugala, W. A. Overholt, L. Santos, D. Giga

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Cotesiaflavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a gregarious larval endoparasitoid of Cliilo parleUus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and other stemborers in the Indo-Australian region, was released in Mozambique for the first time in 1996. Before its release, countrywide surveys on stemborers and their natural enemies were conducted in several places. However, all led to the same conclusion: that Ch. partellns was the most abundant stemborer at the majority of locations, and that the rate of larval parasitism was very low (< 5 %). To evaluate the effect of stemborer species composition on- the establishment of Co. flavipes, two releases were made at two agroecologically different sites during the 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 growing seasons. Cotesiaflavipes was recovered from all the three stemborer species found at each site during the season of release and a year later. However, the rates of parasitism were very low, ranging from 0.6 to 1.9 % on Cli. partellus, 3.2 % on Sesamia calamislis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and 2.6 % on Busseolafiisca Fuller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The native natural enemy, Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was the most common larval parasitoid at the two sites. The recoveries of Co. flavipes during the release period and a year later indicate that this exotic parasitoid has become established at the two locations in the southern and central regipns of Mozambique, in spite of differences in stemborer species composition. However, it is too early to evaluate the impact of Co.flai'ipes on the stemborer populations. © 2001 ICIPE.

Comparative Development, Longevity And Population Growth Of Exotic And Native Parasitoids Of Lepidopteran Cereal Stemborers In Kenya, J. C. Mbapila, W. A. Overholt Jan 2001

Comparative Development, Longevity And Population Growth Of Exotic And Native Parasitoids Of Lepidopteran Cereal Stemborers In Kenya, J. C. Mbapila, W. A. Overholt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Studies on the effect of temperature on the development, longevity and population growth of Cotesia flavipes Cameron and Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) indicated that the development of both Cotesia spp. from oviposition to cocoon formation and adult emergence was inversely related to temperature. The longevity of the parasitoids was also inversely related to temperature. Both parasitoids lived longer when moisture and food (agar + honey/water) were provided. The mean number of females and total adult progeny produced by C. flavipes on two host species were, in most cases, higher than C. sesamiae. The intrinsic rate of natural increase of C. flavipes …

Cereal Stemborer Species Complex And Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes Cameron In Eastern Uganda, T. Matama-Kauma, S. Kyamanywa, J. A. Ocwang, C. O. Omwega, H. R. Willson Jan 2001

Cereal Stemborer Species Complex And Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes Cameron In Eastern Uganda, T. Matama-Kauma, S. Kyamanywa, J. A. Ocwang, C. O. Omwega, H. R. Willson

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Studies were conducted in two districts of eastern Uganda from 1997 to 1999 to introduce and monitor the establishment of an exotic parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), for the control of the stemborer Chilo partellns (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and also to determine the stemborer species complex in maize and sorghum. The study confirmed the presence of four important stemborers, two pyralids Ch. parlellus and Eldana saccharina Walker and two noctuids, Busseola fusca Fuller and Sesamia calamistis Hampson. Chilo partellus was dominant, constituting 53-88% of stemborers found followed by B.fiisca at 8-37 %. The most abundant local parasitoid was the …

The Chemical Ecology Of Host Location By Parasitoids Of African Stemborers, Linnet S. Gohole, Adele J. Ngi-Song Jan 2001

The Chemical Ecology Of Host Location By Parasitoids Of African Stemborers, Linnet S. Gohole, Adele J. Ngi-Song

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

During foraging, parasitoids of insect herbivores are aided by chemical compounds generally termed ‘infochemicals‘, to locate their hosts. The origin of the infochemicals varies; they may be derived from the herbivore itself or activities related to the biology of the herbivore, the host plant, or from interactions between the plant and the herbivore. This paper reviews the status of research in this area, and presents an account of the infochemicals used by African stemborer parasitoids during foraging, as well as recommending possible areas for further investigation. The information generated has potential for application in behaviour modification of parasitoids species in …

Environmental Supply Chain Management Integration Into The Purchase Of Finished Electrical Products, Cavan Kelsey Jan 2001

Environmental Supply Chain Management Integration Into The Purchase Of Finished Electrical Products, Cavan Kelsey

Theses

Representatives from the electronics equipment industry were surveyed and selected companies were interviewed to determine the current level of environmental supply chain integration into the purchase of finished electrical products. Based on the information gathered, a summary of best practices was defined which included insights into effective buyer/supplier relationships and establishing environmental product requirements. As electronic equipment manufacturers change from a vertically integrated marketing structure to one of a horizontal supply chain, there is an increasing need to outsource manufacturing of or to procure finished products made by another supplier and subsequently branded by the buying manufacturer. The manufacturer's environmental …
