The Effects Of Irrigation And Nitrogen Management On Water Use Of Tall Fescue, Christopher Alan Brown
The Effects Of Irrigation And Nitrogen Management On Water Use Of Tall Fescue, Christopher Alan Brown
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is a commonly cultivated turfgrass in Southern Nevada, one of North America's most arid climates. Recognized for its drought tolerance, tall fescue is nonetheless a significant water user in Southern Nevada. Since outdoor water use represents approximately 64% of all regional demand and peaks in the hot summer, efficient use of water on turfgrass such as tall fescue can make a significant contribution to water conservation as well as offset peak demand. Differing amounts of water were imposed, calculated as a leaching fraction (LF) of -0.40, -0.25, -0.15, 0.0 and +0.15 to reflect a continuum …
The Recent Growth Of The Las Vegas Valley And Its Effect On The Criminal Justice System, Scott William Larson
The Recent Growth Of The Las Vegas Valley And Its Effect On The Criminal Justice System, Scott William Larson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In order to succeed every city must offer its residents the opportunity and a prosperous quality of life. Local governments are charged with creating an environment which allows its citizens to find and exploit these opportunities. However, often local governments pursue their objective without planning for the future. As a result, the economic initiatives pursued by local governments may cause a period of unrestrained growth, which can lead to unforeseen consequences, such as pollution, traffic, and crime. A person's quality of life will diminish if he or she does not feel safe; This thesis will focus on the affects growth …
Precipitating And Prophylactic Factors Contributing To Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology In Maltreated Children, Lisa Marie Linning
Precipitating And Prophylactic Factors Contributing To Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology In Maltreated Children, Lisa Marie Linning
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study examined mediating factors that lead to, or buffer against, development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after child maltreatment. Fifty-five children aged 8--17 years voluntarily completed self-report questionnaires and a structured diagnostic interview. It was hypothesized that (1) chronicity and severity of abuse amplify PTSD risk when a child has limited support networks, ineffective coping, external locus of control, affect dysregulation, and a dysfunctional family; (2) key family and victim characteristics would help to ameliorate effects of traumatic abuse; (3) the combination of precipitating and prophylactic factors would determine the effectiveness of managing traumatic maltreatment. Results suggest that dysthymia, …

The sample had a high number of Hispanics (80%) compared to non-Hispanics (20%). It was found that overall parents perceive their child's weight accurately. No significance was found between the ethnicity, education or age of the parents and …
Electrochemical Techniques For Detection Of Tnt And Other Explosives Using Disposable Screen-Printed Carbon Electrodes, Rebecca Ann Pearson
Electrochemical Techniques For Detection Of Tnt And Other Explosives Using Disposable Screen-Printed Carbon Electrodes, Rebecca Ann Pearson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Nitroaromatic and nitramine explosives have been found in the soil and water from many government military bases due to improper storage, weapons testing and production. Run-off from contaminated soil and water can enter underground water and potentially contaminate drinking water for near-by communities. With the closing of military bases throughout the U.S. and Europe, contamination will need to be assessed and remediated before the land and water can be used again for other purposes. The use of a fast and inexpensive field screening technique can save time and money typically incurred during intensive laboratory analysis of clean samples; Screen-printed thick …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Alcohol abuse has become an epidemic in the modern world. The increase in this social problem has brought with it many consequences which everyone in society has to deal with. Unfortunately, the anguish of abuse has also spread through the world of teens. Are there indicators which portend the tendency for teens to abuse alcohol? Quantified research has revealed several of those indicators. Are we helping teens understand what those indicators are? Are teens accepting and learning about those indicators that they might be protected from the harsh consequences? This study begins to help society understand that efforts are being …
An Investigation On The Impact Of Training On Employees' Perceptions Of Occupational Status And Self-Esteem In The Foodservice Industry, Keithen Adell Washington
An Investigation On The Impact Of Training On Employees' Perceptions Of Occupational Status And Self-Esteem In The Foodservice Industry, Keithen Adell Washington
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
As the hospitality community continues to grow into a leading national economical force, it is imperative that the industry investigates perceptions of occupational status and find methods that positively change the negative perceptions of one of its most prevalent divisions, foodservice (Aarnio, 1999). Evaluating perceptions of internal occupational status has been an undeveloped link in this area of research. In order to address internal occupational status, this study looks at the impact of initial foodservice training on the perceptions of newcomers to the career field moderated by specific demographic variables. Examining how training changes perceptions of occupational status and self-esteem …
The Effects Of Motor Practice On Coarticulatory Interactions In The Speech Of Children And Adults, Kimberly Marie Wieberg
The Effects Of Motor Practice On Coarticulatory Interactions In The Speech Of Children And Adults, Kimberly Marie Wieberg
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The current study was designed to elucidate the role of practice on speech production. Specifically, this investigation examined the effects of a distributed practice schedule on speech productions in young children and adults. Unlike the practice period used in previous studies, the practice session utilized in this investigation was spread out over one week (distributed over time), in which participants were required to practice on three different occasions before being retested. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation is to examine the notion of a developmental trend of coarticulation in children by verifying whether or not speech production strategies as exhibited …

Three Pioneering Women In Nicaraguan Theater: Dona Gladys Ramirez De Espinoza, Socorro Bonilla Castellon, And Lucero Millan, Maria-Tania Bandes-Becerra
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
If it is true that theater reflects the human condition, then it can be said that for three decades Nicaragua has been struggling with its own humanity. Some would argue this has been the case since the Somoza dynasty in Nicaragua which ended in 1979. As the Theater of Nicaragua is interwoven in its politics, this paper will bring the reader a closer view of that reality. In an analysis of the history of the theater of Nicaragua, three women have stood out. These three women---Dona Gladys Ramirez de Espinoza, Socorro Bonilla Castellon, and Lucero Millan, have made the theater …
Factors Affecting Recidivism At A Transitional Shelter For The Homeless, Scianna Elizabeth Bowman Augustine
Factors Affecting Recidivism At A Transitional Shelter For The Homeless, Scianna Elizabeth Bowman Augustine
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines factors affecting recidivism (shelter reentry) among two-parent households, female-headed households, and single women, through a study of selected households utilizing a transitional shelter for the homeless in Las Vegas, Nevada. The paper touches on the history of homelessness in America, and explores some of the factors related to the increase in homelessness on the national and local level. It examines the shelter system---in particular, the provision of transitional shelter---as the primary intervention designed to return individuals and families to self-sufficiency. The study found that the three household types did not differ significantly in terms of recidivism. However, …
A Descriptive Study Of Positive Body Image Among Female Adolescent Dancers, Amy Bobo Courrier
A Descriptive Study Of Positive Body Image Among Female Adolescent Dancers, Amy Bobo Courrier
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study examined whether groups of adolescent girls, who society defines as having a positive body image, actually feel positive about their own body image and how they express it culturally. Cheerleaders and dancers were chosen as accessible groups that embodied the ideal body image as defined by popular Western teen culture. Qualitative analysis was conducted using interviews, observations, and focus groups to determine how these groups felt about their body image and how they defined a positive image. The influence of attitudes towards perfectionism, perceived control over the body, and the desire to follow "healthy" habits all contributed to …
Family Factors Associated With Anxiety Sensitivity In Youth, Kelly Lynn Drake
Family Factors Associated With Anxiety Sensitivity In Youth, Kelly Lynn Drake
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between various family variables and anxiety sensitivity (AS) in a community sample of 159 youth ages 7--18 years and their parents. Youth completed self-report measures of anxiety and AS and parents completed measures of AS, attachment, psychopathology, family environment, and parenting practices. The primary purpose was to examine the extent to which these family variables predicted child AS. Results indicated that a combination of family factors including parenting style, parental psychopathology, and family environment significantly predicted child AS. Specifically, parent's perceptions of their child's anxiety sensitivity and a secure attachment …

Protoporphyrin Ix Distribution In Rat Brain Following The Administration Of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid And Its Hexylester, Scott Alan Friesen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Rowett nude rats were injected intra-cranially with varying concentrations of 5-aminolevulinic acid (10, 20, 99, 199, 398 mM) and its hexylester (6.6, 13, 66, 132, 265 mM). Toxicity effects of these compounds were examined based on animal behavior and respiratory distress. It was determined that the maximum tolerable dose for intra-cranial injection is 99 mM 5-Aminolevulinic acid and 66 mM h-ALA; Human glioma spheroids were grown in vitro. After incubation, spheroids were sized (250--350 mum) and injected into the rat brain (10 spheroids per injection). Following the induction and development of glioblastoma multiforme tumors in vivo, Rowett nude rats were …
Weighted Running: Effect On Impact And Oxygen Consumption, Wendy Ann Hibner
Weighted Running: Effect On Impact And Oxygen Consumption, Wendy Ann Hibner
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate if runners adjust running style based on impact magnitude instead of running economy while wearing 30% added trunk weight. Runners ran overground at a self-selected pace with and without 30% added trunk weight. Impact magnitudes and other force parameters were analyzed. Runners also ran on a treadmill with 30% added trunk weight at their preferred stride frequency (PSF) and at +/-10% PSF. Oxygen consumption (VO2) and PSF were recorded. VO2 and PSF were greater during nonweighted compared to weighted running (p < 0.05). During weighted running, VO2 was greater when running at the -10% PSF than the PSF, but not different than the +10% PSF. The slightly greater stride frequency during weighted running compared to nonweighted running may be a strategy to keep F1 magnitudes constant concurrent with maintaining and economical gait pattern. It was concluded that individuals optimized on VO2 and impact concurrently.
Attorneys' Perceptions Of Child Witnesses With Mental Retardation, Michelle Dawn Platt
Attorneys' Perceptions Of Child Witnesses With Mental Retardation, Michelle Dawn Platt
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Children with mental retardation are more likely to be abused than the general population, yet are often denied access to the justice system. Research on children without mental retardation has revealed skepticism as to their reliability as witnesses in the court of law. Even more so, children with mental retardation face the issue of credibility because of their age and disability. The purpose of this study is to assess attorneys' perceptions of child witnesses with mental retardation. Thirty-nine criminal attorneys completed a 33-item questionnaire designed to assess their opinions of the abilities of adults, and children with and without mental …

Material Cooperation And Catholic Institutions: An Inquiry Into Traditional Moral Principle And Its Meaning For Catholic Institutions Today, With Reference To Catholic Hospitals In Australia, Joseph C. Parkinson
Theses
This dissertation views the Principle of Legitimate Cooperation as a guiding norm for the activity of Catholic institutions in the world. It samples various expressions of the principle from the seventeenth century to the present day, noting the significance of the central terms ‘intrinsically evil acts’ and ‘sufficiently serious reason’, and suggests that while the principle traditionally applied to individual moral agents, it can also apply to institutions. Taking as starting-points the Second Vatican Council’s call for a renewal of moral theology and the Church’s post-conciliar view of itself as ‘Sacrament of Christ’, the dissertation sketches an essentially Christological and …
