Substitution De Solvants : Étude De Cas D'Implantation, Denis Bégin, Michel Gérin
Substitution De Solvants : Étude De Cas D'Implantation, Denis Bégin, Michel Gérin
Rapports de recherche scientifique
Introduction

An individual's right to privacy in an electronic society has gained international attention as a booming new field. Its birth may roughly be marked to coincide with the birth of the Internet. The flow of information without limit or boundary has raised concerns with the consumer spokespeople in the Western World that personal information about them may flow as easily as general information about Machu Pichu, Keynesian economics, or Harvard College. The fear is that will cause individuals harm, ranging from personal embarrassment to a loss of civil liberties. Therefore, movements are developing to limit this flow of information. The …

Ecological Observations Of Juvenile Head-Started Western Pond Turtles (Clemmys Marmorata Marmorata) In Their First Season In The Wild, Steven Lee Clark
Dissertations and Theses
This project studies 16 juvenile, western pond turtles that were head-started as part of a species recovery program. To my knowledge, no studies have focused solely on juvenile western pond turtles. This study focuses on the turtles’ ecology in their first season in the wild. Radio telemetry was used to study the turtles’ survival, habitat use, behavior and movement.
All study animals survived. Turtles were found to choose aquatic habitat with 81 %-100% floating vegetative cover. Data suggest that refugia was the most important benefit of floating vegetation. All overwintered in upland sites after brief stays in the ponds. Home …

Foreword: Joint Conference On Legal/Ethical Issues In The Progression Of Dementia, Edward D. Spurgeon
Scholarly Works
The Joint Conference on Legal/Ethical Issues in the Progression of Dementia grew out of the pressing need to address the very real legal and ethical dilemmas that arise in situations like the one of Marie McDonough Larson and her family. Five groups joined forces to sponsor the Conference: the Borchard Foundation Center on Law and Aging; the Alzheimer's Association; the American Bar Association's Commission on Legal Problems of the Elderly; the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys; and the University of Georgia School of Law. Held at the Center for Continuing Education at the University of Georgia, the Conference spanned …

Altered Operant Responding For Motor Reinforcement And The Determination Of Benchmark Doses Following Perinatal Exposure To Low-Level 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin, Vincent P. Markowski, Grazyna Zareba, Sander Stern, Christopher Cox, Bernard Weiss
Psychology
Pregnant Holtzman rats were exposed to a single oral dose of 0, 20, 60, or 180 ng/kg 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) on the 18th day of gestation. Their adult female offspring were trained to respond on a lever for brief opportunities to run in specially designed running wheels. Once they had begun responding on a fixed-ratio 1 (FR1) schedule of reinforcement, the fixed-ratio requirement for lever pressing was increased at five-session intervals to values of FR2, FR5, FR10, FR20, and FR30. We examined vaginal cytology after each behavior session to track estrous cyclicity. Under each of the FR values, perinatal TCDD exposure …

GECOS (Global Eco System) bottle with an additional using quality, represents new idea, which is patented innovation. Basic bottle assignment of GECOS bottle is for storage and transportation of the liquids from food domain, such as water, juices or milk. Additional using quality of GECOS bottles comes from unique construction, as well as their closures. When GECOS bottle is empty it can serve as universal building elements, which are connected by closures as connecting elements into new three-dimensional structures. In such a way, the bottles are easier to be kept, collected or used in a game as didactic and creative …

Genetic And Metabolic Screening Of Newborns: Must Health Care Providers Seek Explicit Parental Consent?, Sheila Wildeman, Jocelyn Downie
Genetic And Metabolic Screening Of Newborns: Must Health Care Providers Seek Explicit Parental Consent?, Sheila Wildeman, Jocelyn Downie
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
In this paper, we provide some background on the history of newborn screening and the legal context within which questions regarding consent must be answered, and then turn to the various arguments that can be made for and against the current approach to parental consent to genetic and metabolic tests administered as part of provincial/territorial newborn screening programs. In the end, we conclude that either practice should be changed to align it with current law such that explicit parental consent is sought for the established tests, or that advocates for maintaining current practices should lobby for legislation permitting newborn screening …

Source Selection Among Information Seekers: Ideals And Realities, David H. Michels, Heidi Julien
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
In a study examining the information behavior of 9 individuals over 10 weeks in daily life contexts, participants were asked to identify ideal sources of help for the questions and issues they faced. The data show how people’s expectation of the usefulness of information sources varies by the information seeker’s gender, and source characteristics such as accessibility, trustworthiness, and reliability. Usefulness of sources has both cognitive and affective aspects. Further, discrepancies between participants' stated ideals, and the sources actually used, are analyzed. The study results suggest ways to encourage use of formal information systems and services.

Health Care Ethics Experts In Canadian Courts, Jocelyn Downie
Health Care Ethics Experts In Canadian Courts, Jocelyn Downie
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
In this paper, I will first describe the traditional approach to the use of experts in Canadian courts. Then I will consider whether, on this approach, health care ethics experts should be permitted to testify in Canadian courts. I will argue that they should be permitted to testify but caution should be exercised by the courts, the parties, and the experts themselves. The objective of the paper is to highlight the strengths and raise some concerns about the weaknesses of a practice that appears to be growing, so that the potential harmful consequences might be anticipated, problems with the practice …

The Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy, Arctic Council And Multilateral Environmental Initiatives: Tinkering While The Arctic Marine Environment Totters, David Vanderzwaag, Robert Huebert, Stacey Ferrara
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
The Arctic marine environment is not pristine, as commonly imagined, but is facing numerous pressures,' the most serious arguably coming from outside the region. Melting of sea ice, linked to global warming, threatens the long-term survival of various species including polar bears and has potential to seriously disrupt ocean currents. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including pesticides, industrial compounds and combustion by-products, are transported via air and water currents from regions outside the Arctic and become concentrated in the fatty tissues of animals." The pollutants threaten not only the well being of wildlife but the health of northern residents heavily dependent …
