Learning Through Service In A Clinical Setting: The Effect Of Specialization On Social Justice & Skills Training, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez Jan 2001

Learning Through Service In A Clinical Setting: The Effect Of Specialization On Social Justice & Skills Training, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez

Faculty Scholarship

Arguing against the trend toward specialization in clinical legal education, this essay addresses potential limitations of specialized legal clinics in furthering the dual mission of clinical legal education: social justice and skills training. It points out that specialized clinics limit access to justice by leaving the myriad needs of clients partially unmet. They limit students' learning about the complex needs of clients and students' ability to discover broad inequities in the legal system. Specialization makes it more difficult to train students to be creative problem solvers, and affects their professional socialization

Mary Daily V. Boston College: The Impermissibility Of Single-Sex Classes In Private Universities, Maryam Ahranjani Jan 2001

Mary Daily V. Boston College: The Impermissibility Of Single-Sex Classes In Private Universities, Maryam Ahranjani

Faculty Scholarship

This Comment discusses the rationale underlying single-sex education and the diversity in its implementation. This Comment argues that not only are single-sex classrooms withing private undergraduate institutions legally unsound, but also that this approach fails to address long-term public policy concerns about the situation of women in education. As the United States grapples with education reform, it is far too easy to initiate Band-Aid solutions. Single-sex education, ranging from single-sex classrooms to single-sex public schools, should exist as an option, but Title IX and equal protection standards must be satisfied. The first section of this article discusses the historical perspective …

The Anatomy Of An Institutionalized Emergency: Preventive Detention And Personal Liberty In India, Derek P. Jinks Jan 2001

The Anatomy Of An Institutionalized Emergency: Preventive Detention And Personal Liberty In India, Derek P. Jinks

Michigan Journal of International Law

Despite many indications of an emerging transnational consensus on the scope of human rights law, fundamental disagreements persist. These disagreements are, in many respects, structured around important cleavages in the international community such as: North/South, East/West, and capitalist/socialist. Whether these cleavages are understood as cultural, economic, or political, international lawyers must develop a better understanding of the specific practices that generate divergent interpretations of human rights standards. Without such an understanding, these factions seem to underscore an irreducibly political conception of human rights. Indeed, the prospects of a global "community of law" turn on the degree to which fundamental differences …

Technology Assisted Life Stories, Gary R. Harlow Jan 2001

Technology Assisted Life Stories, Gary R. Harlow

Open Access Master's Theses

A pilot project was undertaken to test an emerging technology with a view to examine the feasibility of assisting older participants in the telling of their life stories. With the use of a digital recorder and voice-to text software, ten older persons were freed from the labor of creating a formal record of their life stories, either through typing ,writing, or manual transcription of audio tape. Extemporaneously, on a hand-held recorder, and in a one-on-one interview format, each participant's voice was converted to digital form as the narration proceeded. This digital recording was then transcribed electronically into a computer, which …

Cultural Predictors Of Asian/Pacific Islander Women’S Hiv/Aids Protective Behaviors, Jennifer C. Huang Jan 2001

Cultural Predictors Of Asian/Pacific Islander Women’S Hiv/Aids Protective Behaviors, Jennifer C. Huang

Open Access Master's Theses

Understanding the HIV/AIDS risk behaviors among heterosexual Asian/Pacific Islander (API) women requires an examination of the circumstances which place heterosexual women at risk of AIDS, as well as the cultural factors which affect API sexuality. Research has been conducted on samples of women, one of the fastest growing populations to be infected with HIV/AIDS, as well as API populations, who are susceptible to HIV infection as any other ethnic group. There is, however, a paucity of research concerning the sexuality of API women. Previous research regarding HIV/AIDS risk factors for women may not be culturally sensitive. Additionally, research pertaining to …

Beliefs About Women Held By African American Women And Men Differing In Level Of Acculturation, Jean M. Jacob Jan 2001

Beliefs About Women Held By African American Women And Men Differing In Level Of Acculturation, Jean M. Jacob

Open Access Master's Theses

Sixty-five African American women and 63 African American men completed research questionnaires examining beliefs about women of different ethnicities and income levels. Data were analyzed to determine if beliefs varied as a function of: participant gender, level of acculturation, and stage of racial identity; and on the basis of the target woman's ethnicity and income level. Data revealed that participants attributed more favorable descriptors to higher income targets regardless of ethnicity. Also, this study found that participants rarely used descriptors contained on inventories such as the Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI). Overall, the results suggest that prior research examining beliefs …

Testing The Invariance Of The Transtheoretical Model Utilizing A Population Of Smokers, Rose Marie Ward Jan 2001

Testing The Invariance Of The Transtheoretical Model Utilizing A Population Of Smokers, Rose Marie Ward

Open Access Master's Theses

A crucial assumption in the development of a measure is that the measurement model is invariant. This means that the measurement model is the same in different populations and across different occasions. Utilizing data from a representative sample of smokers, we examined the invariance of the Decisional Balance Inventory and the Processes of Change. The sample consists of 4144 participants (44.3% male, 55.7% female, 95.7% White, mean age 40.7). After the number of factors for each scale was confirmed using Factor Analysis, the sample was partitioned into subgroups to test the invariance of the model. The scales were compared across …

Fluoroscopic Placement Of Double-Pigtail Ureteral Stents., Gregory L. Chen, Demetrius H. Bagley

Department of Urology Faculty Papers

Purpose: Double-pigtail ureteral stent is placed cystoscopically after ureteroscopy. We describe a technique for fluoroscopic placement of ureteral stents and demonstrate its use in a non-randomized prospective study.Materials and methods: Double-pigtail stents were placed either fluoroscopically or cystoscopically in 121 consecutive patients. In the fluoroscopic method, the stent was placed over a guide wire using a stent pusher without the use of cystoscopy. Conversely, stents were placed through the working channel of the cystoscope under vision. The procedure, stent length, width, type, method, ureteral dilation, and use of a retrieval string were noted. Results: A wide range of stent sizes were …

Characterization Of A PorosTm-Fumonisin B1 Affinity Column For Isolating Ceramide Synthase From Rat Liver, S. Jernigan, W. B. Melchior Jr., G. R. Jenkins, K. L. Rowland, D. W. Roberts, P. C. Howard, H. Tolleson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Fumonisin B1 is a mycotoxin produced by fungi of the genus Fusarium, common pathogens of corn and other grain plants. Toxic effects associated with fumonisin B1 include equine leukoencephalomacia, porcine pulmonary edema, rat renal carcinoma, and murine hepatocellular carcinoma. Increased risk for esophageal cancer in humans has been epidemiologically associated with consumption of corn contaminated with Fusarium, suggesting that fumonisin B1 may be involved. The biological effects of fumonisin B1 exposure result primarily from disruption of de novo sphingolipid biosynthesis via inhibition of ceramide synthase. Exposure of animals or cultured cells to fumonisin B1 results in the characteristic accumulation of …

Identification Of Florida Largemouth Bass Alleles In Arkansas Public And Private Aquaculture Ponds, Ronald L. Johnson, Randall Staley Jan 2001

Identification Of Florida Largemouth Bass Alleles In Arkansas Public And Private Aquaculture Ponds, Ronald L. Johnson, Randall Staley

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Florida subspecies of the largemouth bass (LMB) has often been introduced into waters outside of its range, with escape of individuals into associated waterways common. Sustaining pure lines within controlled hatchery settings is also difficult. The present study investigated LMB populations by way of allozyme analysis of three diagnostic loci of 115 LMB in three public and seven private aquaculture ponds within Arkansas. The goal was to determine the success of hatcheries in maintaining pure subspecies. None of the pond populations studied were fixed for all alleles. Private ponds had northern LMB allele frequencies of up to 0.40 in …

Distribution Of Leconte's Free-Tailed Bat (Tadarida Brasiliensis Cynocephala) In Arkansas, With Notes On Reproduction And Natural History, David A. Saugey, D. Blake Sasse, J. D. Wilhide, Drew Reed, Tammy R. Jones, Darrell R. Heath, Daniel R. England

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

During the past 20 years (1982-2001) we have studied the biology, occurrence and distribution of LeConte's (Brazilian) free-tailed bat, Tadarida brasiliensis cynocephala, in Arkansas. Colonies and individuals were reported from man made structures only. Four new county records have been documented since 1988, extending the range from the central part of the state to Arkansas's northern-most tier of counties. Numerous nuisance maternity colonies were investigated during exclusion activities and one, year-round colony provided the majority of reproductive data. A total of 152 free-tailed bats was submitted to the Arkansas Department of Health Rabies Laboratory (1982-2001); most during February through April, …

Middle-Ear Function With Tympanic-Membrane Perforations. I. Measurements And Mechanisms, Susan E. Voss, John J. Rosowski, Saumil N. Merchant, William T. Peake Jan 2001

Middle-Ear Function With Tympanic-Membrane Perforations. I. Measurements And Mechanisms, Susan E. Voss, John J. Rosowski, Saumil N. Merchant, William T. Peake

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Sound transmission through ears with tympanic-membrane ~TM! perforations is not well understood. Here, measurements on human-cadaver ears are reported that describe sound transmission through the middle ear with experimentally produced perforations, which range from 0.5 to 5.0 mm in diameter. Three response variables were measured with acoustic stimulation at the TM: stapes velocity, middle-ear cavity sound pressure, and acoustic impedance at the TM. The stapes-velocity measurements show that perforations cause frequency-dependent losses; at low frequencies losses are largest and increase as perforation size increases. Measurements of middle-ear cavity pressure coupled with the stapes-velocity measurements indicate that the dominant mechanism for …

Novel Glutaredoxin Gene In Soybean Responds To Aluminum Toxicity In Soil, Kisha D. Thomas-Bostic Jan 2001

Novel Glutaredoxin Gene In Soybean Responds To Aluminum Toxicity In Soil, Kisha D. Thomas-Bostic

McNair Scholars Journal

Oxidative stress generated by aerobic metabolism or from environmental sources is a major cause of damage to organisms. Aluminum is a major toxin in acidic soils and one proposed source of oxidative stress. The enzyme glutaredoxin utilizes a disulfide oxidation-reduction mechanism to detoxify free radicals and is one way organisms have evolved to handle oxidative stress. We have recently isolated a novel glutaredoxin cDNA from soybean; sequence analysis indicates that it is highly similar to other plant glutaredoxin. We grew soybean seedlings in soils containing 0, 20, and 50 mM AlCl3 to examine the effect of high levels of Al …

Cyprus In Europe: Seizing The Momentum Of Nice, Patrick R. Hugg

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In December 2000 the European Council Summit in Nice fulfilled the promise for European Union enlargement made at the Helsinki Summit the year before. The leaders of the EU Member States reaffirmed their commitment to the accession of the applicant countries, making possible the broad re-unification of the continent under democratic rule of law and free market economies. This Article focuses specifically on the accession of the island of Cyprus, Europe's remaining divided state, poised strategically between East and West. The island's armed stand-off presents the clearest example of legal conflict between two ethnic communities in a discrete geographical territory, …
