Faculty Perceptions Of Competencies In The Nursing Profession, Debra A. Filer Jan 2001

Faculty Perceptions Of Competencies In The Nursing Profession, Debra A. Filer

Theses and Dissertations

In order to respond to the needs of a rapidly changing health care environment, nursing educators must redefine the competencies needed by the beginning registered nurse. The study was designed to assess nursing faculty members' perceptions of competencies used by the beginning registered nurse in practice and their perceptions of the degree to which those same nursing competencies were presented in the nursing curriculum. Faculty members' perceptions were compared also to the results of a previous study which included a survey of beginning nurses to identify their perceptions of such competencies.

Nursing faculty members who teach in professional nursing programs …

Communication And Professional Civility As A Basic Service Course: Dialogic Praxis Between Department And Situated In An Academic House, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz Jan 2001

Communication And Professional Civility As A Basic Service Course: Dialogic Praxis Between Department And Situated In An Academic House, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz

Basic Communication Course Annual

Communication departments frequently offer basic service courses to other campus departments or schools. A communication course sensitive to the mission of the university or college of which it is a part, as well as to its own mission, allows programs that include such a course in their curriculum to distinguish themselves from competing programs. Additionally, such a mission-sensitive course further defines departmental and university identity, assisting in institutionalizing a mission. Offering such a course provides an opportunity for dialogic praxis to occur between departments situated within the context of a local institution. Dialogic praxis involves knowledge of one's own position, …

Social Work Practitioners And Technology Transfer, Anna M. Scheyett, Amelia C. Roberts, Raymond Kirk

Faculty and Staff Publications

The application of new skills and interventions into the practice community is often slow and haphazard. A coaching intervention is proposed to augment traditional social work education techniques and maximize the integration of new knowledge into social work practice. This coaching model includes assessment of a practitioner's readiness for change, stage-wise coaching interventions, assessment of organizational barriers to the transfer of new information, and development of strategies to address these barriers. Implications for social work professionals development and future research are discussed.

One For My Baby, One More For The Road: Legislation And Counseling To Prevent Prenatal Exposure To Alcohol, James Drago Jan 2001

One For My Baby, One More For The Road: Legislation And Counseling To Prevent Prenatal Exposure To Alcohol, James Drago

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the legal and ethical implications of balancing fetal rights with maternal autonomy, particularly in cases where pregnant women consume alcohol, potentially harming the fetus. It argues that while fetal rights have gained recognition in tort law, criminalizing maternal conduct raises constitutional concerns, including privacy and equal protection. The analysis advocates for a balanced approach, combining moderate criminal sanctions with education and support programs to protect fetal health while respecting women's rights.

Expedited Hiv Testing: An Unnecessary Test That Is Allowing The State To Trample On A Woman's Constitutional Rights, Sheree Gootzeit Jan 2001

Expedited Hiv Testing: An Unnecessary Test That Is Allowing The State To Trample On A Woman's Constitutional Rights, Sheree Gootzeit

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that New York's expedited HIV testing for pregnant women is unconstitutional, ineffective, and invasive, violating Fourth Amendment rights and offering no significant benefits over existing laws. It asserts that the testing infringes on privacy, bodily integrity, and informed consent, while alternative methods like urine testing could achieve the same goals without such violations. The analysis emphasizes the need to protect women's rights during vulnerable periods while maintaining public health standards.

Betraying Women In The Name Of Revolution: Violence Against Women As An Obstacle To Democratic Nation-Building In South Africa, Suzanne A. Kim Jan 2001

Betraying Women In The Name Of Revolution: Violence Against Women As An Obstacle To Democratic Nation-Building In South Africa, Suzanne A. Kim

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the contradiction between the formal legal advancements in gender equality and the persistent epidemic of violence against women in post-apartheid South Africa. Despite the African National Congress' (ANC) commitment to gender equality and the inclusion of women in political processes, the reality of widespread violence against women undermines the nation's democratic ideals and highlights the failure to address gender concerns within the broader nationalist agenda.

Fetal Neglect And State Intervention: Preventing Another Attleboro Cult Baby Death, Marilyn L. Miller Jan 2001

Fetal Neglect And State Intervention: Preventing Another Attleboro Cult Baby Death, Marilyn L. Miller

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the legal and ethical implications of the Rebecca Corneau case, where the state intervened in her pregnancy due to concerns about the viability of her fetus and her refusal of medical care based on religious beliefs. The court balanced Corneau's constitutional rights against the state's interest in protecting the fetus, ultimately prioritizing the latter. This decision highlights the tension between individual autonomy, religious freedom, and fetal rights, raising significant questions about the limits of state intervention in pregnancy.

Drug Tests, Arrests & Fetuses: A Comment On The U.S. Supreme Court's Narrow Opinion In Ferguson V. City Of Charleston, Brigitte M. Nahas Jan 2001

Drug Tests, Arrests & Fetuses: A Comment On The U.S. Supreme Court's Narrow Opinion In Ferguson V. City Of Charleston, Brigitte M. Nahas

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the Supreme Court's decision in Ferguson v. City of Charleston, where the Court ruled that a hospital's drug-testing policy for pregnant patients violated the Fourth Amendment. The analysis critiques the Court's narrow opinion for failing to provide clear guidance on future drug-testing policies, while emphasizing the unconstitutionality of using such policies primarily for law enforcement purposes. The author argues that the decision leaves unresolved questions about the balance between government interests and women's privacy and reproductive rights, particularly in the context of prenatal care and drug use.

Objective To report the development and testing of a device for the noninvasive diagnosis of vesico‐ureteric reflux (VUR) which avoids the need for urethral catheterization (currently required to reliably determine the presence of VUR), and which thus avoids the anxiety of parents and patients that causes many families to refuse such evaluation.

Patients and methods Fifty‐four children (49 girls and five boys, mean age 7.2 years, range 4–14) previously evaluated as having VUR volunteered to participate; no child was symptomatic at the time of the study. Refluxing units were known to be present by voiding cysto‐urethrography (within 1 year, mean …

An Improved In Vitro Model For The Study Of Mycobacterium Leprae/Schwann Cell Interactions, Deanna Alisa Hagge Jan 2001

An Improved In Vitro Model For The Study Of Mycobacterium Leprae/Schwann Cell Interactions, Deanna Alisa Hagge

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Globally, millions of leprosy patients suffer irreversible peripheral nerve damage resulting in blindness or other disabilities as a consequence of Mycobacterium leprae infection. Schwann cells, the neural target of M. leprae, have a central role in leprosy histopathology including axonotrophy, altered myelin architecture and demyelination. The mechanisms of nerve damage have not been fully elucidated but appear to be the direct result of M. leprae within Schwann cells or a combined effect with an aggressive immune response to M. leprae within the nerves. There is no standardized in vitro model for the study of M. leprae interactions with the Schwann …

Leaders Pray With The Assembly, E Louise Williams Jan 2001

Leaders Pray With The Assembly, E Louise Williams

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

I wonder what it was that prompted the disciples' request. Had they watched Jesus praying, as was his custom, in a place apart and then seen him come back somehow changed-more refreshed, more serene, more focused, more disturbed? Had they overheard Jesus praying-the intimate conversation, the wrestling and struggle, the thanksgiving and praise, the intercessions? Had they remembered some admonition or invitation to pray? Did their own spirits feel dry and empty? Did they know some longing deep inside for a closer communion with the one Jesus called Abba? Was there in them some joy or anguish that needed …

Development Of A Two-Year Diploma Nursing Program That Includes A Career Mobility Track And Plans For Implementation And Evaluation To Replace A Three Year Program, Rosemary E. Saunders

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Southside Regional Medical Center (SRMC) in Petersburg, Virginia had experienced an increased demand for registered nurses because of growth in the population of its service area and a decrease in the number of graduates from its nursing program. The three-year hospital-based diploma nursing program had a decrease in the number of applicants to the school and an increase in attrition of enrolled students. The purpose of the project was to develop a two-year hospital-based diploma nursing program that included an educational track for career mobility and plans for implementation and evaluation from the current three-year program.

The development research methodology …

Synaptopodin Expression In Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome Of Childhood., Tarak Srivastava, Robert E. Garola, J M. Whiting, Uri S. Alon Jan 2001

Synaptopodin Expression In Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome Of Childhood., Tarak Srivastava, Robert E. Garola, J M. Whiting, Uri S. Alon

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Synaptopodin is a proline-rich protein intimately associated with actin microfilaments present in the podocytes' foot processes. We investigated for synaptopodin expression in children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS), including minimal change disease (MCD), diffuse mesangial hypercellularity (DMH), and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS); in children with congenital nephrotic syndrome of the Finnish type (CNF); and in normal kidney tissue. In particular, we examined whether an association exists between synaptopodin expression in podocyte cells and the response to steroids in INS, and whether synaptopodin expression can predict FSGS upon the initial kidney biopsy in children who progress from MCD or DMH …

Aids In Ontario: An Examination Of Mobility Patterns And Spatial Variations (Immune Deficiency), Holly Nadean Innes

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The primary objective of this thesis is to examine mobility patterns of people with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in terms of where they go for testing, treatment and support. The secondary objective is to examine and describe spatial variations in the prevalence of AIDS among the forty-two Public Health Units (PHUs) of Ontario, and to explain the processes underlying these patterns. An assessment of the spatial perspective will be completed utilizing two contributors. The first employs the process of interviewing the AIDS Educators at the Ontario PHUs and capturing their impressions as to what is occurring within their areas regarding …

An Assessment Of The Role And Impact Of Non-Governmental Organizations (Ngos) In The Management And Sustainability Of Local Environmental Resources: A Case Study Of Nanun, Ghana, Iddrisu Adam Jan 2001

An Assessment Of The Role And Impact Of Non-Governmental Organizations (Ngos) In The Management And Sustainability Of Local Environmental Resources: A Case Study Of Nanun, Ghana, Iddrisu Adam

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

NGOs have been heralded as the vehicle of choice for aid delivery by international organizations lice the World Bank and the United Nations and also by western governments, especially in the last two decades. This is a tacit acceptance of their role as development agents in the South. However, no substantive research has been done to find out if these NGOs are indeed contributing to the better management of local environmental resources. This research sets out to examine the role and impact of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the management and sustainability of local environmental resources in rural Ghana. What makes …

Influence Of Short-Term Endurance Exercise Training On Heart Rate Variability, Clarence Matthew Lee Jan 2001

Influence Of Short-Term Endurance Exercise Training On Heart Rate Variability, Clarence Matthew Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if 8 exercise endurance training (ET) sessions over 2 weeks significantly alters cardiac autonomic modulation, as measured by heart rate variability (HRV). Twenty-four college-aged males were recruited for this study and were randomized into either an exercise group (EX; n=12) or a control group (CT; n=12). EX underwent 2 weeks of ET on a cycle-ergometer (frequency: four times/week; duration: 40 minutes; intensity 80-85% HRreserve), whereas CT was instructed not to alter their previous level of physical activity. Five-minute ECG tracings were collected for HRV under the following conditions: 5 minutes of paced …

Grave Matter: Contestations In Actress Burial, Christine Courtland Mather Jan 2001

Grave Matter: Contestations In Actress Burial, Christine Courtland Mather

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Death disrupts. The social space accorded to rituals of death and memorialization differs from all other spaces. Actresses disturb. Society contests, determines, and enacts the burial of an actress as her final performance. This study explores the actress burial as a site of meaning. Contestations over the fate of the actress body reveal power structures and the motivations of cultural institutions. This study highlights four actresses—Lecouvreur, Oldfield, Bernhardt, and Duse—whose burials cover a wide range of circumstances. Each chapter gives the relevant biographical information for the actress and the social background for the cultural contestation over the actress body. Traditional …

Age At Death In The Human Skeleton: A Combined Analysis Of Four Phase-Based Aging Systems To Determine Effieciency And Accuracy In Multifactorial Age Range Assignments, Jennifer Carol Giesecke Jan 2001

Age At Death In The Human Skeleton: A Combined Analysis Of Four Phase-Based Aging Systems To Determine Effieciency And Accuracy In Multifactorial Age Range Assignments, Jennifer Carol Giesecke

LSU Master's Theses

Analyses of human skeletal remains by physical anthropologists necessitate precise methods for the determination of age at death. Physical anthropologists recognize that the most accurate estimations of age at death are produced from evaluation of multiple indicators of age. To this end, three skeletal sites, the auricular surface, pubic symphysis, and right fourth sternal rib end, are often evaluated for age in adult skeletal remains. However, as of yet, no standardized method of combining the respective estimates of age provided at these sites has been reported. The above mentioned skeletal sites of 49 females and 77 males from the Hamann-Todd …

Healing The Whole Person: A Post Occupancy Evaluation Of The Rooftop Therapy Park At Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Knoxville, Tennessee, Brad Edward Davis

LSU Master's Theses

This study used a post occupancy evaluation to assess the impact of an existing hospital garden on its users. Previous studies of hospital gardens have been of passive garden use. This study addressed gardens including physical therapy, while also considering the emotional, spiritual, and social aspects. The POE included behavioral observation, interviews with the designer and lead therapist, a staff survey, and a patient questionnaire. In light of historical information and contemporary theory, the results revealed issues to be addressed in the design process of future healing gardens, specifically those including physical therapy. The major issues included: the need for …
