Effects Of Reading Disability In Adolescents On Self-Concept And Future Expectations, Miriam I. Meyer Jan 2001

Effects Of Reading Disability In Adolescents On Self-Concept And Future Expectations, Miriam I. Meyer

Open Access Dissertations

This study investigated whether reading problems affect adolescents' self-concept and examined adolescent opinions regarding the consequences of reading ability. Three groups of adolescents participated: 68 special education students (SE), 41 regular education poor readers (REP), and 164 regular education students (RE). Two surveys were administered to the participants, the Multidimensional Self Concept Scale (MSCS) and the Meyer Reading Opinion Survey (MROS), along with standardized measures of reading ability and intelligence.

Results indicated that on the MSCS, RE students had significantly higher academic self-concept than REP and SE students; differences were not noted between the latter two groups. RE students also …

The Electronic Fishbowl As A Community Of Inquiry: Management Passion In The Xxist Century, Matthew Eriksen Jan 2001

The Electronic Fishbowl As A Community Of Inquiry: Management Passion In The Xxist Century, Matthew Eriksen

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation presents a new pedagogy called the Fishbowl that employs experiential learning based on reflection (Dewey, 1928, Rodgers, 1969, Schön, 1983, Torbert, 1973, 1976, 1991, Siebert & Daudelin, 1999), learning cells (Goldschmid, 1970 & 1971), and the fishbowl technique (Villalba, Lemmond, & Baymiller, 1998). It is an attempt to create a community of inquiry. The question addressed is what cognitive characteristics, communication skills, and affective characteristics of learners are related to learner satisfaction with the Fishbowl pedagogy. Communication factors are taken into consideration because the Fishbowl is a cooperative form of learning and it represents a novel communication episode. …

Dialogue In The Development Of A Consilience Index: A Quantum Approach To Integrating Qualitative And Quantitative Practices In The Social Sciences, Kathleen S. Cady-Webster Jan 2001

Dialogue In The Development Of A Consilience Index: A Quantum Approach To Integrating Qualitative And Quantitative Practices In The Social Sciences, Kathleen S. Cady-Webster

Open Access Dissertations

The social sciences are seeking expanded methodological models that go beyond significance testing for the assessment of theoretical efficacy (Cohen, 1984; Harlow, Muliak & Steiger, 1997; Meehl, 1997). Faust and Meehl (1992) contend that the social sciences are lacking in the integration of data, while Miller and Burbank, (1994) call for models that offer congruency in theory and practice. In response, this dissertation presents an ontological model that embraces the epistemological views of both quantitative and qualitative researchers. It builds on a previous longitudinal study (Webster, 2000) involving outcomes for 32 juvenile delinquents in Alaska. Results from a qualitative thematic …

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to advance understanding of the self-change process in recovery from anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) through: (a) development of a staging instrument for recovery from BN; (b) development of TTM-based measures, including decisional balance, self-efficacy, and processes of change; (c) invariance testing of these measures across AN and BN subsamples; and (d) characteristic description of individuals at each stage of change. The sample (N = 427) was composed of AN subgroup (n = 278) and BN subgroup (n = 149) who completed questionnaires measuring all constructs of the TTM, as well as …

The Global Stability, Boundedness, And Periodicity Character Of Certain Difference Equations, Michael Alexander Radin Jan 2001

The Global Stability, Boundedness, And Periodicity Character Of Certain Difference Equations, Michael Alexander Radin

Open Access Dissertations

We study the global stability, the boundedness nature, and the periodic character of the positive solutions of the difference equation [special characters omitted]where the parameters α and β are positive real numbers and the initial conditions x−1 and x0 are arbitrary non-negative real numbers. This problem was proposed by Dr. Richard Levins of the Harvard School of Public Health as a population model in Mathematical Biology. We consider α to be the immigration rate and β to be the population growth rate. We will also investigate the periodic character and the boundedness nature of all positive solutions of following two …

The Relationship Between A Sense Of Community And Social Disorganization And Neighborhood Deprivation, Sharon Kingston Jan 2001

The Relationship Between A Sense Of Community And Social Disorganization And Neighborhood Deprivation, Sharon Kingston

Open Access Dissertations

Empirical work on conditions in economically deprived neighborhoods, suggest that neighborhood conditions can exert negative effects human development even after accounting for individual characteristics of neighborhood residents. One of the most important theories regarding the ways in which neighborhood conditions impact behavior is the theory of social disorganization. Social disorganization posits that poverty and disorganizing social conditions interfere with the ability of neighborhood residents to form and enforce common social norms, leading to social problems (Byrne & Sampson, 1993, Sampson & Groves, 1989). Despite the utility of theories such as social disorganization, the measurement of important mediating variables between structural …

Antitrust Divestiture In Network Industries, Howard A. Shelanski, J. Gregory Sidak Jan 2001

Antitrust Divestiture In Network Industries, Howard A. Shelanski, J. Gregory Sidak

University of Chicago Law Review

The landmark Microsoft case raises challenging questions concerning antitrust remedies. In this Article, we propose a framework for assessing the costs and benefits of different remedies, particularly divestiture, in monopolization cases involving network industries. Our approach can assist a court or enforcement agency not only in analyzing the welfare effects of divestiture, but also in choosing more generally among alternative kinds of remedies. The framework would, for example, apply to a court's choice between damages and injunctive remedies or between behavioral injunctions and structural injunctions. After developing our framework, we apply it to the divestiture proposals made by the government …

Can You Be A Good Person And A Good Prosecutor?, Abbe Smith Jan 2001

Can You Be A Good Person And A Good Prosecutor?, Abbe Smith

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Somehow, it is understood that prosecutors have the high ground. Most people simply assume that prosecutors are the good guys, wear the white hats, and are on the "right" side. Most law students contemplating a career in criminal law seem to think this. It could be that most practicing lawyers think this, as well.

Prosecutors represent the people, the state, the government. This is very noble, important, and heady stuff. Prosecutors seek truth, justice, and the American way. They are the ones who stand up for the victims and would-be victims, the bullied and battered and burgled. They protect all …

Moral Nuisances, John Copeland Nagle Jan 2001

Moral Nuisances, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

Nuisance law provides a remedy for activities that substantially interfere with the use and enjoyment of one's land. Most nuisance cases today involve environmental pollution or unwanted noises, sights, or smells. Historically, though, nuisance law had a much broader application that regulated brothels, saloons, and gambling parlors - what I call moral nuisances.

I articulate a theory of moral nuisances that applies when (1) a substantial and legally cognizable interference with a landowner's use or enjoyment of his or her land is caused by (2) an action that is regarded as immoral by a reasonable person within the community (3) …

Privacy And Power, Rosa Brooks Jan 2001

Privacy And Power, Rosa Brooks

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Something has gone wrong in modem America, argues Jeffrey Rosen in The Unwanted Gaze. Our medical records are bought and sold by health care providers, drug companies, and the insurance industry. Our e-mails are intercepted and read by our employers. Amazon.com knows everything there is to know about our reading and web-browsing habits. Poor Monica Lewinsky's draft love letters to President Bill Clinton were seized by the villainous Ken Starr, and ultimately plastered all over the nation's newspapers.

To Rosen, the nature of the problem is clear: These examples are all part of a troubling "phenomenon that affects all …

The Effect Of Sesamoid Mobilization And Flexor Hallucis Strengthening On Reducing Pain And Improving Function In The Great Toe, Jennifer Shamus Jan 2001

The Effect Of Sesamoid Mobilization And Flexor Hallucis Strengthening On Reducing Pain And Improving Function In The Great Toe, Jennifer Shamus

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of standard physical therapy when combined with sesamoid mobilization, flexor hallucis strengthening and gait training for reducing pain and increasing function in the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MPJ) in persons with functional hallux limitus. Sprains of the first MPJ are common in athletics. Push off, forward drive and running can be significantly impaired after this injury. More importantly, MPJ sprains can also result in persistent pain and loss of range of motion. Given the debilitating nature of this injury, it is important to determine the most effective treatment for hallux limitus. …
