The Counterproliferation Imperative: Meeting Tomorrow's Challenges, Center For Counterproliferation Research

Books and Book Chapters

The proliferation of nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) weapons poses major strategic and operational challenges to the United States and an important political challenge to the international community. In the hands of hostile states, these weapons threaten stability in key regions, put U.S. forces at risk, and undermine the U.S. ability to project power and to reassure friends and allies. Increasingly, the American homeland is at risk as well. U.S. intelligence officials routinely warn that more than a dozen states are actively pursuing offensive chemical or biological weapons programs. Moreover, the 1998 Indian and Pakistani nuclear tests, as well as …

Conflict Of Interest And Physical Therapy, Mike W. Martin, Donald L. Gabard Nov 2001

Conflict Of Interest And Physical Therapy, Mike W. Martin, Donald L. Gabard

Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

'In a chapter entitled “Conflict of Interest & Physical Therapy”, authors Martin & Gabard offer a cogent definition. They write simply, “conflicts of interest are situations in which individuals have interests that significantly threaten their role responsibilities, or would do so for a typical person having their role.” Likewise, Davis describes the standard view of conflict of interest as a situation in which a person P is in a relationship requiring P to exercise some judgment on another’s behalf and P has an interest “tending to interfere with the proper exercise of that judgment”. With regard to professional conflicts of …

"I Only Wish I Had Known It Sooner." Education Students' Changing Conceptions Of Learning Strategies., Irene Styles, Susan Beltman, Alex Radloff

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

One of the cornerstones of student learning is the ability to use appropriate learning strategies. Awareness and orchestration of learning strategies are central to self-regulation of learning. Effective learners have a range of strategies and use them appropriately for different tasks. Effective learners are flexible and can adapt their strategy use to achieve their learning goals. If we expect prospective teachers to help their students become effective learners, they themselves need to be aware of and manage their own learning. But are our prospective teachers themselves effective learners in terms of strategy use? Using a qualitative approach, we examined the …

Il-1 Induces Collagenase-3 (Mmp-13) Promoter Activity In Stably Transfected Chondrocytic Cells: Requirement For Runx-2 And Activation By P38 Mapk And Jnk Pathways, John A. Mengshol, Matthew P. Vincenti, Constance E. Brinckerhoff Nov 2001

Il-1 Induces Collagenase-3 (Mmp-13) Promoter Activity In Stably Transfected Chondrocytic Cells: Requirement For Runx-2 And Activation By P38 Mapk And Jnk Pathways, John A. Mengshol, Matthew P. Vincenti, Constance E. Brinckerhoff

Dartmouth Scholarship

Osteoarthritic chondrocytes secrete matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) in response to interleukin-1 (IL-1), causing digestion of type II collagen in cartilage. Using chondrocytic cells, we previously determined that IL-1 induced a strong MMP-13 transcriptional response that requires p38 MAPK, JNK and the transcription factor NF-κB. Now, we have studied the tissue-specific transcriptional regulation of MMP-13. Constitutive expression of the transcription factor Runx-2 correlated with the ability of a cell type to express MMP-13 and was required for IL-1 induction; moreover, Runx-2 enhanced IL-1 induction of MMP-13 transcription by synergizing with the p38 MAPK signaling pathway. Transiently transfected MMP-13 promoters were not IL-1 …

Serum 25-Hydroxy Cholecalciferol In Infants And Preschool Children In The Western Region Of Saudi Arabia. Etiological Factors, Suhad M. Bahijri

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Low vitamin D status has been frequently reported among Saudi subjects of all ages. No attempt has been made to relate this status to dietary intake or to diseases leading to malabsorption, for example diarrhea. This study was performed to investigate the various factors leading to low vitamin D status, and their relative importance in infants and preschool children. METHODS: Nine hundred and thirty-five healthy subjects aged 4-72 months were selected randomly form the Jeddah area of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Medical history, time and frequency of exposure to sunlight and dietary intake were recorded. Blood samples were …

“Closet Case”: Boy Scouts Of America V. Dale And The Reinforcement Of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, And Transgender Invisibility, Darren Lenard Hutchinson

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article argues that the Supreme Court's decision in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale misapplies and ignores controlling First Amendment precedent and incorrectly defines “sexual identity” as a clinical or biological imposition that exists apart from expression or speech. This Article provides a doctrinal alternative to Dale that would protect vital interests in both equality and liberty and that would not condition, as does Dale, sexual “equality” upon the silencing of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals.

This Article proceeds in five parts. Part I provides an introduction to the case and issues.Part II discusses the evolution of the …

Role Of Protein Kinase C-Delta In The Regulation Of Collagen Gene Expression In Scleroderma Fibroblasts, Sergio A. Jimenez, Svetlana Gaidarova, Biagio Saitta, Nora Sandorfi, David J. Herrich, Joan C. Rosenbloom, Umberto Kucich, William R. Abrams, Joel Rosenbloom Nov 2001

Role Of Protein Kinase C-Delta In The Regulation Of Collagen Gene Expression In Scleroderma Fibroblasts, Sergio A. Jimenez, Svetlana Gaidarova, Biagio Saitta, Nora Sandorfi, David J. Herrich, Joan C. Rosenbloom, Umberto Kucich, William R. Abrams, Joel Rosenbloom

Selected Works of Sergio Jiménez, MD, MACR

Working with cultured dermal fibroblasts derived from control individuals and patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), we have examined the effects of protein kinase C-delta (PKC-delta) on type I collagen biosynthesis and steady-state levels of COL1A1 and COL3A1 mRNAs. Rottlerin, a specific inhibitor of PKC-delta, exerted a powerful, dose-dependent inhibition of type I and type III collagen gene expression in normal and SSc cells. Optimal rottlerin concentrations caused a 70-90% inhibition of type I collagen production, a >80% reduction in COL1A1 mRNA, and a >70% reduction in COL3A1 mRNA in both cell types. In vitro nuclear transcription assays and transient transfections …

Effects Of Endophyte Infection In Tall Fescue (Festuca Arundinacea: Poaceae) On Community Diversity, Greg Spyreas, David J. Gibson, Beth A. Middleton Nov 2001

Effects Of Endophyte Infection In Tall Fescue (Festuca Arundinacea: Poaceae) On Community Diversity, Greg Spyreas, David J. Gibson, Beth A. Middleton

Publications

Recent studies have suggested that the presence of endophytes in tall fescue can lead to decreased species richness in the associated plant community. To assess the generality of this hypothesis, a field study tested the effects of endophyte infection on a 3-yr-old successional field dominated by Festuca arundinacea. The potential importance of endophyte infection relative to other environmental factors was tested by including two additional treatments: the effects of soil fertility and mowing. Contrary to previous studies, a positive relationship was found between endophyte infection frequency and diversity (N = 23, F = 5.23, R2 = 0.19, P < 0.03). A strong interaction was found between the mowing treatment and endophyte infection frequency in predicting diversity (N = 22, F = 36.1, R2 …

The Type 2 Iodothyronine Deiodinase Is Essential For Adaptive Thermogenesis In Brown Adipose Tissue, Lucia A. De Jesus, Suzy D. Carvalho, Mirian O. Ribeiro, Mark Schneider, Sung-Woo Kim, John W. Harney, P. Reed Larsen, Antonio C. Bianco Nov 2001

The Type 2 Iodothyronine Deiodinase Is Essential For Adaptive Thermogenesis In Brown Adipose Tissue, Lucia A. De Jesus, Suzy D. Carvalho, Mirian O. Ribeiro, Mark Schneider, Sung-Woo Kim, John W. Harney, P. Reed Larsen, Antonio C. Bianco

Dartmouth Scholarship

Type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase (D2) is a selenoenzyme, the product of the recently cloned cAMP-dependent Dio2 gene, which increases 10- to 50-fold during cold stress only in brown adipose tissue (BAT). Here we report that despite a normal plasma 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) concentration, cold-exposed mice with targeted disruption of the Dio2 gene (Dio2–/–) become hypothermic due to impaired BAT thermogenesis and survive by compensatory shivering with consequent acute weight loss. This occurs despite normal basal mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) concentration. In Dio2–/– brown adipocytes, the acute norepinephrine-, CL316,243-, or forskolin-induced increases in lipolysis, UCP1 mRNA, and …

Kiss And Tell: Making The Case For The Torious Transmission Of Herpes And Human Papillomavirus, Michele L. Mekel Nov 2001

Kiss And Tell: Making The Case For The Torious Transmission Of Herpes And Human Papillomavirus, Michele L. Mekel

Missouri Law Review

Recognizing theories of recovery for a tort committed an estimated six million times per year in the United States alone at an annual cost in excess of $4 billion is logical—if not imperative. Not all jurisdictions, however, recognize theories of recovery when the tort in question is the wrongful transmission of herpes and human papillomavirus (“HPV”), two of the most common, incurable sexually transmitted diseases (“STDs”) in America. Nevertheless, in Deuschle v. Jobe, the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Western District of Missouri took a significant step by acknowledging an unmarried sexual partner’s right to bring negligence and intentional …
