Changes In The Distribution Of Lepidopteran Maize Stemborers In Kenya From The 1950s To 1990s, Zhou Guofa, William A. Overholt, Moses B. Mochiah
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Three hundred and ninety-two maize fields in the southern arable zone of Kenya were sampled for lepidopteran cereal stemborers from 1996-2000. Chilo partelhis (Swinhoe) was the most abundant stemborer, and was found at all locations with elevations below 1500 m, and at some locations between 1500 and 2300 m. The highest density of C. partelhis was in the semi-arid ecological zone of eastern Kenya. Chilo orichalcociliellus (Strand) was found in the lowland southern coastal area, and a few inland sites on the border of Tanzania in southeastern Kenya. Busseola fusca Fuller was dominant in highland areas. In the Lake Victoria …

Impact Of Solar Radiation Rainfall And Cannibalism On Disappearance Of Maize Stemborers In Kenya, M. J. Bonhof, W. A. Overholt
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The effect of solar radiation, rainfall and cannibalism on the disappearance of eggs and larvae of the cereal stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) were studied. Disappearance and nonviability of egg batches was higher on plants exposed to solar radiation than on shaded plants. Significantly fewer small larvae were recovered from plants exposed to rainfall than from shielded plants. Cannibalism among larvae of the same size was not common except at high larval densities. Contrary to the common belief that disappearance is the result of prédation, these studies show that solar radiation and rainfall might also play an important role in the …

A concept of an ecosystem approach to human health improvement in Sub-Saharan Africa is presented here. Three factors mainly affect the physical condition of the human body: the abiotic environment, vector-transmitted diseases, and natural resources. Our concept relies on ecological principles embedded in a social context and identifies three sets of subsystems for study and management: human disease subsystems, natural resource subsystems, and decision-support subsystems. To control human diseases and to secure food from resource subsystems including livestock or crops, integrated preventive approaches are preferred over exclusively curative and sectorial approaches. Environmental sustainability - the basis for managing matter and …

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Tsetse Fly Trap Catches At Nguruman, Southwest Kenya, A. Odulaja, J. Baumgärtner, S. Mihok, I. M. Abu-Zinid
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Spatial and temporal dynamics of rapidly growing populations of tsetse flies at Nguruman, southwest Kenya during 1993-1995, were investigated, following six years of intensive population suppression with traps over a c. 100 km2 area. The two tsetse species present were randomly distributed in the short rainy season, but were aggregated in the dry and long rainy seasons. Maximum temperature was the dominant weather factor associated with the degree of aggregation. Trends in catches at 20 fixed sites along an 18 km north-south axis were weakly correlated between locations, possibly representing population sub-structuring. In particular, trends in population change were poorly …

Stemborer Research In Zimbabwe: Prospects For The Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes Cameron, P. Clhnwada, C. O. Omvvega, W. A. Overholt
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The stemborers Busseola fnsca (Fuller) and Chilo partellus (Svvinhoe) cause the highest economic damage to maize and sorghum in Zimbabwe. A number of studies on stemborer bioecology and management in Zimbabwe have been conducted, but most are still incomplete. The more important of these are studies on life history, incidence and distribution patterns, host plants, yield losses, chemical control, cultural control, host plant resistance, the use of sex pheromones, and biological control. These are discussed here in detail, and areas where further research is needed are pointed out. As part of an integrated strategy for managing stemborers in Zimbabwe, an …

The production and semi-leptonic decay of heavy quarks have been studied in the photoproduction process e+p → e+ + dijet + e- + X with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.5 pb-1. Events with photon-proton centre-of-mass energies, Wγp, between 134 and 269 GeV and a photon virtuality, Q2, less than 1 GeV2 were selected requiring at least two jets of transverse energy Ejet1(2)T > 7(6) GeV and an electron in the final state. The electrons were identified by employing the ionisation energy loss measurement. The contribution of beauty quarks was determined using the transverse momentum of …

All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Bad Forgiveness In Counseling And Preaching, John M. Berecz
All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Bad Forgiveness In Counseling And Preaching, John M. Berecz
Faculty Publications
A 3 R's of Forgiveness model is presented in which forgiveness is seen as a complex therapeutic process involving both situational and personal variables. Forgivers are seen to utilize the cognitive processes of dialectical reasoning and reframing, modulated by the emotional experiences of empathy, guilt, and shame. Personality style and self-esteem significantly influence the process as well. Distinctions are maintained among various kinds of forgiveness. Divine forgiveness, seen as a partial component of a spiritual encounter with one's God, may be a valid experience for people of faith, but is not something that psychologists are equipped to experimentally analyze. Interpersonal …

Religious Fundamentalism And Gender Differences, Herbert W. Helm, John M. Berecz, Emily A. Nelson
Faculty Publications
The role of religious fundamentalism and its relationship to shame and guilt was evaluated in 107 students who attend a church-sponsored university. A number of personality measures were given and gender differences were analyzed. The role of externalization was similar for males in this sample to that of earlier studies. However, it was found that females showed positive correlations between externalization and both shame and guilt. For females, more fundamentalistic religious training may help to contribute to an external orientation at the expense of identifying with a personal religion, and appropriate guilt. © 2001 Human Sciences Press, Inc.

A study of the v̄-jet mass spectrum in e+p→v̄X events at a center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider at DESY using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from standard model processes over the v̄-jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both e+p→>e+X and e+p-vX data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. Couplings to first-generation quarks are considered and limits are …
Prejudice And Racism: Challenges And Progress In Measurement, Alan W. Burkard, Barbara R. Medler, Michael Allen Boticki
Prejudice And Racism: Challenges And Progress In Measurement, Alan W. Burkard, Barbara R. Medler, Michael Allen Boticki
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
The intent of this chapter is to review three categories of prejudice measures that practitioners and researchers can use in practice or research. Given that a recent comprehensive review of self-report racial prejudice measures was completed by Biernat and Crandall (1999), this chapter focuses on new developments in self-report measures of racial and anti-gay prejudice. Anti -gay prejudice is an important clinical and research area, and to date, only a few critical reviews of instruments measuring negative attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women have appeared in the literature (Herek, 1994; O'Donohue & Caselles, 1993; Schwanberg, 1993). Emerging prejudice measurement …

All In The Family: Darwin And The Evolution Of Mediation, Nancy A. Welsh

Maybe I’ve been thinking about evolution more than is normal for the average lawyer. I have a 5-year-old son who is fascinated by every species of dinosaur. As a result, I read to my son nearly every night about the events and the evolving cast of creatures that populated the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Since the Triassic period began 240 million years ago, this provides a real sense of perspective.
I wonder how Charles Darwin would use his theory of evolution to explain the many strange and wonderful variations of mediation that have flowered in the past decade. And …

Human Interindividual Variability In Susceptibility To Airborne Particles, Dale Hattis, Abel Russ, Robert Goble, Prerna Banati, Margaret Chu
Sustainability and Social Justice
Part of the explanation for the persistent epidemiological findings of associations between mortality and morbidity with relatively modest ambient exposures to airborne particles may be that some people are much more susceptible to particle-induced responses than others. This study assembled a database of quantitative observations of interindividual variability in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters likely to affect particle response. The pharmacodynamic responses studied included data drawn from epidemiologic studies of doses of methacholine, flour dust, and other agents that induce acute changes in lung function. In general, the amount of interindividual variability in several of these pharmacodynamic response parameters was greater …
Genetic And Metabolic Screening Of Newborns: Must Health Care Providers Seek Explicit Parental Consent?, Sheila Wildeman, Jocelyn Downie
Genetic And Metabolic Screening Of Newborns: Must Health Care Providers Seek Explicit Parental Consent?, Sheila Wildeman, Jocelyn Downie
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
In this paper, we provide some background on the history of newborn screening and the legal context within which questions regarding consent must be answered, and then turn to the various arguments that can be made for and against the current approach to parental consent to genetic and metabolic tests administered as part of provincial/territorial newborn screening programs. In the end, we conclude that either practice should be changed to align it with current law such that explicit parental consent is sought for the established tests, or that advocates for maintaining current practices should lobby for legislation permitting newborn screening …

Source Selection Among Information Seekers: Ideals And Realities, David H. Michels, Heidi Julien
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
In a study examining the information behavior of 9 individuals over 10 weeks in daily life contexts, participants were asked to identify ideal sources of help for the questions and issues they faced. The data show how people’s expectation of the usefulness of information sources varies by the information seeker’s gender, and source characteristics such as accessibility, trustworthiness, and reliability. Usefulness of sources has both cognitive and affective aspects. Further, discrepancies between participants' stated ideals, and the sources actually used, are analyzed. The study results suggest ways to encourage use of formal information systems and services.

The Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy, Arctic Council And Multilateral Environmental Initiatives: Tinkering While The Arctic Marine Environment Totters, David Vanderzwaag, Robert Huebert, Stacey Ferrara
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
The Arctic marine environment is not pristine, as commonly imagined, but is facing numerous pressures,' the most serious arguably coming from outside the region. Melting of sea ice, linked to global warming, threatens the long-term survival of various species including polar bears and has potential to seriously disrupt ocean currents. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including pesticides, industrial compounds and combustion by-products, are transported via air and water currents from regions outside the Arctic and become concentrated in the fatty tissues of animals." The pollutants threaten not only the well being of wildlife but the health of northern residents heavily dependent …

Since 1970, pollution control in the United States has centered on national level regulatory approaches built on federal command-and-control regimes. Enacted in reaction to well-publicized "failures" of markets, common law, and state and local regulation such as the "killer smogs" of the 1950s and 1960s and the "burning" of Cleveland's Cuyahoga River in 1969 modem environmental statutes shifted authority away from states, local governments, and private property holders to the national government.
Section I reviews the history of federal and state regulation of water quality and highlights the delicate balance of authority that has emerged between various levels of government. …

Outing The Madman: Fair Housing For The Mentally Handicapped And Their Right To Privacy Versus The Landlord's Duty To Warn And Protect, Frederic White
Faculty Scholarship
Over the past fifty years, America has steadily deinstitutionalized its mentally handicapped population, often with mixed results. The primary goal of this process was to place these long-forgotten people back into the so-called mainstream of American life, allowing them access to the same kinds of advantages schools, jobs, housing-that most of us take for granted. This road has not always been easy. In particular, providing safe and accessible housing for the mentally handicapped is an important step toward establishing meaningful self-sufficiency for these individuals. However, to ensure that the needs of all tenants are fulfilled, several potential conflicts between the …

Ramirez Solar House : A Case Study Of Early Solar Design, Joanna Kendig
Theses
The Ramirez Solar House in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is an early historic example of passive solar design. The house was designed by Henry N. Wright, a significant contributor in solar research. Wright's 1944 design with a large window wall and generous overhangs represents a significant step in solar design development. The house, now under the stewardship of National Park Service, has been nominated for the National Register of Historic Places.
The Ramirez House's solar performance was a subject of this study. Instrumentation was set up to record temperatures, humidity and illumination in the unoccupied and un-heated …

The Dialectics Of Fashion: Gender And Politics In Yemen, Sheila Carapico

The situation of Yemeni women is complicated and contradictory. On the one hand, compared with relatively fashionforward Mediterranean Arabs, or even their affluent sisters in the Gulf, Yemeni women appear to be especially oldfashioned. One rarely sees a Yemeni woman outdoors bareheaded, and in the capital, Sana'a, most women cover their faces in public. Yet outward appearances can be misleading. While it is tempting to assume that women "still" veil because "tradition" tells them to, it is simply wrong to conclude that "traditionally" all women were secluded in their homes, or that how they dress now tells us much about …
