Abuse Assessment Screen–Disability (Aas-D): Measuring Frequency, Type, And Perpetrator Of Abuse Toward Women With Physical Disabilities, Judith Mcfarlane, Rosemary B. Hughes, Margaret A. Nosek, Janet Y. Groff, Nancy Swedlend, Patricia Dolan Mullen Nov 2001

Abuse Assessment Screen–Disability (Aas-D): Measuring Frequency, Type, And Perpetrator Of Abuse Toward Women With Physical Disabilities, Judith Mcfarlane, Rosemary B. Hughes, Margaret A. Nosek, Janet Y. Groff, Nancy Swedlend, Patricia Dolan Mullen

Rural Institute Journal Articles

An interview questionnaire was presented to a multiethnic sample of 511 women, age 18–64 years, at public and private specialty clinics to determine the frequency, type, and perpetrator of abuse toward women with physical disabilities. The four-question Abuse Assessment Screen–Disability (AAS-D) instrument detected a 9.8% prevalence (50 of 511) of abuse during the previous 12 months. Using two standard physical and sexual assault questions, 7.8% of the women (40 of 511) reported abuse. The two disability-related questions detected an additional 2.0% of the women (10 of 511) as abused. Women defining themselves as other than black, white, or Hispanic (i.e., …

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Crystallization Behavior Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel Nov 2001

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Crystallization Behavior Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effect of cooling rate (slow: 0.1°C/min; fast: 5.5°C/min) on the crystallization kinetics of blends of a highmelting milk fat fraction and sunflower oil (SFO) was investigated by pulsed NMR and DSC. For slow cooling rate, the majority of crystallization had already occurred by the time the set crystallization temperature had been reached. For fast cooling rate, crystallization started after the samples reached the selected crystallization temperature, and the solid fat content curves were hyperbolic. DSC scans showed that at slow cooling rates, molecular organization took place as the sample was being cooled to crystallization temperature and there was fractionation …

Marginal Regression Of Gaps Between Recurrent Events, Yijian Huang, Ying Qing Chen Nov 2001

Marginal Regression Of Gaps Between Recurrent Events, Yijian Huang, Ying Qing Chen

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Recurrent event data typically exhibit the phenomenon of intra-individual correlation, owing to not only observed covariates but also random effects. In many applications, the population can be reasonably postulated as a heterogeneous mixture of individual renewal processes, and the inference of interest is the effect of individual-level covariates. In this article, we suggest and investigate a marginal proportional hazards model for gaps between recurrent events. A connection is established between observed gap times and clustered survival data, however, with informative cluster size. We then derive a novel and general inference procedure for the latter, based on a functional formulation of …

Economic Reforms And Growth Prospects In India, Lawrence, R. Klein, Thangavel Palanivel Nov 2001

Economic Reforms And Growth Prospects In India, Lawrence, R. Klein, Thangavel Palanivel

CAPS Working Paper Series

Starting in June 1991, the Indian government introduced a number of liberalising measures, including significant tariff reduction, abolition of all quantitative restrictions on non-consumer goods, unification of the exchange rates, and adoption of a liberal set of rules for FDI, and introduction of current account convertibility. While the industrial reforms seek to bring about a greater competitive domestic environment, the trade reforms seek to improve international competitiveness. The private sector is allowed in many industries that were earlier exclusively reserved for the public sector. In these areas, the public sector will have to compete with the private sector, even though …

The Wine Is In The Mail: The Twenty-First Amendment And State Laws Against The Direct Shipment Of Alcoholic Beverages, Russ Miller Nov 2001

The Wine Is In The Mail: The Twenty-First Amendment And State Laws Against The Direct Shipment Of Alcoholic Beverages, Russ Miller

Vanderbilt Law Review

The Internet has revolutionized commerce by providing an easy way for businesses to reach vast numbers of customers, and by allowing consumers to attain products of all sorts with the mere click of a mouse. Some wine consumers, however, feel left behind by the Internet revolution. State laws against the direct shipment of alcohol leave them frustrated because they cannot purchase wine online and have it shipped to their homes. These laws against direct shipment have attracted a significant amount of attention in the news media, and they have recently been challenged in a number of federal courts.

Area-Level Characteristics And Smoking In Women, Marilyn Tseng, Karin Yeatts, Robert Millikan, Beth Newman Nov 2001

Area-Level Characteristics And Smoking In Women, Marilyn Tseng, Karin Yeatts, Robert Millikan, Beth Newman

Kinesiology and Public Health

Objectives. This study examined whether area-level characteristics are associated with individual smoking behavior among women.

Methods. Analyses included 648 women enrolled as control patients in the Carolina Breast Cancer Study (1993–1996). Smoking and covariate information was obtained from interviews. Area-level characteristics included census block-group education level, poverty, unemployment, car–home ownership, crowding, and, for 431 women, city-level crime rates.

Results. In multivariate logistic regression models, no area characteristics were clearly associated with a history of smoking. Among those who had ever smoked, continued smoking was associated with living in low-education areas (odds ratio [OR] = 1.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] = …

Acrostic Variations, Susan Thorpe Nov 2001

Acrostic Variations, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

Much has been written on the history of the acrostic as a form of wordplay, both in Word Ways and elsewhere, and I do not intend to dwell upon the aspect of the genre. Suffice to say that the acrostic seems to have first appeared in the 1850s, had its Victorian heyday, and then disappeared from mainstream wordplay as it gave way to the crossword puzzle in 1913.

To Walk The Earth In Safety 3rd Edition (Fy2001), Us Dos Pm/Wra

Global CWD Repository

The United States first became involved in humanitarian demining in 1988 when it sent a team to assess the landmine situation in Afghanistan. Five years later, U.S. demining-related programs were underway in Afghanistan and seven other countries. By the end of 2001, we will have provided more than $500 million to 38 countries, as well as the Province of Kosovo and northwest Somalia, for various humanitarian demining efforts such as deminer training, mine awareness and mine clearance, as well as orthopedic assistance to, and socioeconomic reintegration programs for, landmine accident survivors and their families. Almost $100 million of this amount …
