Conflict Resolution In The Elementary School, Cami Lyn Matsuko Okubo Jan 2001

Conflict Resolution In The Elementary School, Cami Lyn Matsuko Okubo

All Graduate Projects

Conflict is a natural part of life. People make the choice to respond to it negatively and/or constructively. Conflict theories explain that conflict is both inevitable in social circumstances and serves to foster individual development. Without conflict resolution skills training, students may not be aware of the viable alternatives to come to a resolution nor may they be aware of how to communicate through negotiation. The purpose of this project was to develop an integrated conflict resolution program for elementary students at the fourth grade level. As a result of this project, students will have an opportunity to learn the …

The Bridging Role Of The Community Service Director On The Engaged Campus, Joann Campbell Jan 2001

The Bridging Role Of The Community Service Director On The Engaged Campus, Joann Campbell

Higher Education

Declines in civic participation, low voting rates among 18-25 year olds, dwindling federal support for social services, and deficit state budgets have created a climate in which higher education must make a case for the value it adds to society through applications of research and teaching. National and state organizations (such as Campus Compact and state Compacts) dedicated to supporting a culture of service in higher education articulate the university's role as a collective citizen, whose priorities include linking scholarship to community-based needs, using the resources of the college faculty for professional local service, and utilizing federal work study, America …

The Right To Liberty In A Good Society, Randy E. Barnett, Douglas B. Rasmussen Jan 2001

The Right To Liberty In A Good Society, Randy E. Barnett, Douglas B. Rasmussen

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

We have been asked to consider how a "Constitution of Civic Virtue" might contribute to a "good society." To answer this question, we need to have some idea of what a good society might be, and we need to be able to articulate that idea. Certainly, we think we know a good movie when we see it, a good book when we read it, a good argument when we hear it, and a good idea when we have one, but we are not sure we have a handle on what a good society is. Even what we think we know …

Department Of Radiation Oncology And Kimmel Cancer Center, Thomas Jefferson University, The Intronic G13964c Variant In P53 Is Not A High-Risk Mutation In Familial Breast Cancer In Australia., Anna Marsh, Amanda B Spurdle, Bruce C Turner, Sian Fereday, Heather Thorne, Gulietta M Pupo, Graham J Mann, John L Hopper, Joseph F Sambrook, Georgia Chenevix-Trench

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 account for approximately 50% of breast cancer families with more than four affected cases, whereas exonic mutations in p53, PTEN, CHK2 and ATM may account for a very small proportion. It was recently reported that an intronic variant of p53--G13964C--occurred in three out of 42 (7.1%) 'hereditary' breast cancer patients, but not in any of 171 'sporadic' breast cancer control individuals (P = 0.0003). If this relatively frequent occurrence of G13964C in familial breast cancer and absence in control individuals were confirmed, then this would suggest that the G13964C variant plays a role in …

Biodiversity: Connecting With The Tapestry Of Life, Elise F. Granek, Francisco Dallmeier, Alfonso Alonso, Peter H. Raven Jan 2001

Biodiversity: Connecting With The Tapestry Of Life, Elise F. Granek, Francisco Dallmeier, Alfonso Alonso, Peter H. Raven

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Biodiversity is the extraordinary variety of life on Earth – from genes and species to ecosystems and the valuable functions they perform. E.O. Wilson, the noted biologist and author who coined the term “biodiversity,” explains it as “the very stuff of life.” Species and the ecosystems in which they live are indelibly linked. Conversion or loss of ecosystems inevitably impairs the species that depend on them. As well, changes in the life cycle of one species could impact the life cycles of many other species (including humans), alter ecosystems and ecosystem functions, and contribute to local, regional and, ultimately, global …

Center for Survey Research Publications

The Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program was launched in October of 1993. At that time, the Center for Survey Research conducted the Massachusetts Tobacco Survey (MTS), a comprehensive survey of adults and teens living in Massachusetts. The purpose of the survey was to collect baseline data on the prevalence of tobacco use among adults and teens in the Commonwealth and on issues related to the likelihood of smoking cessation or initiation. The survey also assessed the prevalence of restrictive smoking policies, and attitudes about tobacco control measures. The baseline data serve as a standard against which the impact of various programs …

Implications Of Apoptosis For Toxicity, Carcinogenicity, And Risk Assessment: Fumonisin B1 As An Example, Yvonne P. Dragan, Wayne R. Bidlack, Samuel M. Cohen, Thomas L. Goldsworthy, Gordon C. Hard, Paul C. Howard, Ronald T. Riley, Kenneth A. Voss

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The rates of cell proliferation and cell loss in conjunction with the differentiation status of a tissue are among the many factors contributing to carcinogenesis. Nongenotoxic (non-DNA reactive) chemicals may affect this balance by increasing proliferation through direct mitogenesis or through a regenerative response following loss of cells through cytotoxic (oncotic) or apoptotic necrosis. In a recent NTP study in Fischer rats and B6C3F1 mice, the mycotoxin fumonisin B1 caused renal carcinomas in male rats and liver cancer in female mice. In an earlier study in male BD-IX rats, fumonisin B1 caused hepatic toxicity and hepatocellular carcinomas. …

Crossing Borderlands Of Inequality With International Legal Methodologies - The Promise Of Multiple Feminisms, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol Jan 2001

Crossing Borderlands Of Inequality With International Legal Methodologies - The Promise Of Multiple Feminisms, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

This work provides insights into the gendered developments of international law. It explores the roles played by the gendered rule of law and by the conflation of economic, social, political, religious, cultural, and historic realities in the marginalization of women in the international, regional, and domestic spheres worldwide. The first section presents the myriad locations of women's persistent inequality. The next sets forth feminist theory that has been the basis of both the celebration of women's progress and the denunciation of women's subordination. The last part makes suggestions for the articulation of a methodology that follows the complex paths of …

Full Legal Representation For The Poor: The Clash Between Lawyer Values And Client Worthiness, Michelle S. Jacobs

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article seeks to expand the scope of our understanding of values and their connection to the work of poverty lawyers. The article explores the literature on poverty and moral worthiness. In order to bring clarity to the discussion, it examines social science research on defining "values" and detailing how they can affect behavior. Prof. Jacobs describes the reactions of clinical students to a classroom exercise, which asked them to describe the legal representation they would provide to hypothetical clients. This article describes how the link between students' values and broader societal beliefs affect the practices of the bar and …

On Becoming The Other: Cubans, Castro, And Elian -- A Latcritical Analysis, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol Jan 2001

On Becoming The Other: Cubans, Castro, And Elian -- A Latcritical Analysis, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

It is difficult to imagine that a cute, little, six-year-old boy would be able to change the favorable socially constructed images of cubanas/os virtually overnight. But that is precisely what happened with Elian and the comunidad cubana en Miami en estos estados unidos. The story is sad and poignant, heart-wrenching and surreal, human and political, civil and social, cultural and economic. It reaches into the souls of all who have fought and lost after having thought that they had fought and won.

This essay explores the transformation of the Cuban community in the eyes of the estado unidense majority …

Correlation Of Human Olfactory Responses To Airborne Concentrations Of Malodorous Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted From Swine Effluent, J. A. Zahn, A. A. Dispirito, Y. S. Do, B. E. Brooks, E. E. Cooper, J. L. Hatfield Jan 2001

Correlation Of Human Olfactory Responses To Airborne Concentrations Of Malodorous Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted From Swine Effluent, J. A. Zahn, A. A. Dispirito, Y. S. Do, B. E. Brooks, E. E. Cooper, J. L. Hatfield

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Direct multicomponent analysis of malodorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in ambient air samples from 29 swine (Sus scrofa) production facilities was used to develop a 19-component artificial swine odor solution that simulated olfactory properties of swine effluent. Analyses employing either a human panel consisting of 14 subjects or gas chromatography were performed on the air stream from an emission chamber to assess human olfactory responses or odorant concentration, respectively. Analysis of the olfactory responses using Fisher’s LSD statistics showed that the subjects were sensitive to changes in air concentration of the VOC standard across dilutions differing by …

Bargaining For Loyalty In The Information Age: A Reconsideration Of The Role Of Substantive Fairness In Enforcing Employee Noncompetes, Rachel Arnow-Richman Jan 2001

Bargaining For Loyalty In The Information Age: A Reconsideration Of The Role Of Substantive Fairness In Enforcing Employee Noncompetes, Rachel Arnow-Richman

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article explores the enforceability of employee non-compete agreements, with particular attention to their use in information-based industries as a response to increased worker mobility. Non-compete agreements have long been viewed with skepticism by courts and scholars due to historical concerns about employee bargaining power. This article argues that the current approach to assessing the fairness of these agreements is misdirected. Courts attempt to distinguish proper from improper restraints by looking to whether the non-compete protects an employer interest that is separate and distinct from the employer's desire simply to retain the employee. Such an approach is unworkable in an …

Recent Developments In Federal Income Taxation: The Year 2000, Ira B. Shepard, Martin J. Mcmahon Jr. Jan 2001

Recent Developments In Federal Income Taxation: The Year 2000, Ira B. Shepard, Martin J. Mcmahon Jr.

UF Law Faculty Publications

This recent developments outline discusses, and provides context to understand the significance of, the most important judicial decisions and administrative rulings and regulations promulgated by the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department during 2000 - and sometimes a little farther back in time if we find the item particularly humorous or outrageous. Most Treasury Regulations, however, are so complex that they cannot be discussed in detail and, anyway, only a devout masochist would read them all the way through; just the basic topic and fundamental principles are highlighted. Amendments to the Internal Revenue Code generally are not discussed except to …

Cybercoverage For Cyber-Risks: An Overview Of Insurers' Responses To The Perils Of E-Commerce, Robert H. Jerry Ii, Michele L. Mekel Jan 2001

Cybercoverage For Cyber-Risks: An Overview Of Insurers' Responses To The Perils Of E-Commerce, Robert H. Jerry Ii, Michele L. Mekel

UF Law Faculty Publications

Insurers' responses to the risks inherent in e-commerce and the demand for coverage have been anything but uniform. Instead, the solutions are a patchwork of stop-gap measures and niche offerings, including: (1) exclusions to coverage; (2) modifications to existing policies in order to extend or to limit coverage; and (3) the creation of new policies that specifically target Internet-related liabilities and losses. These various measures have been applied in both the first- and third-party settings. This article presents an overview of some of the risks involved in the new "e-economy" and surveys how insurers are responding to these new risks.

Bridging The Divide: An Alternative Approach To International Labor Rights After The Battle Of Seattle, Stephen F. Diamond Jan 2001

Bridging The Divide: An Alternative Approach To International Labor Rights After The Battle Of Seattle, Stephen F. Diamond

Faculty Publications

The massive protest by labor, human rights, and environmental activists at the Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization in Seattle in late 1999 was a singular event in global trade politics. It represented a major setback for the proponents of free trade and for the "globalization" process itself. It reflected, and has now influenced, the contours of American domestic politics as well. At the heart of the Seattle events was a new coalition between trade unions, led by the American AFL-CIO, and a wide range of protest groups and non-governmental organizations. This new coalition represents a potent force but …
