G1425 Garlic Production In The Home Garden, Laurie Hodges, Susan D. Schoneweis

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Nf01-455 Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy In The United States, David R. Smith

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The USDA announced on December 23, 2003 the first diagnosis in the United States of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease) in a dairy cow. BSE is not contagious. It is unlikely that an outbreak of BSE will occur in North American cattle because the United States and Canada took action in 1997 to prevent transmission via contaminated feed. The risk to human health from BSE is minuscule. However, the diagnosis may seriously affect beef exports from the U.S.

Nf01-483 Attending Fairs: Safeguarding Your Health And Nebraska's Livestock Industry, Rosie Nold, David R. Smith

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The recent media attention on outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom and other livestock-related diseases is a reminder of the serious consequences of livestock diseases. Most diseases, including foot-and-mouth, cannot be transmitted from animals to humans, although a few diseases can affect both humans and animals. For your own health, it is important to use some simple sanitary practices when visiting places where livestock are housed or are being exhibited. Another concern is the spread of disease among animals. Even though many diseases do not present any direct risks to humans, human contact can help spread diseases to …

This is not easy to do, of course, Parents flush with money still find it difficult to keep their cool when faced with what may seem like a teen-ager's insatiable demand for the latest clothing or shoes so that the youngster can fit in with everyone else at school. In the best of times, $75 or $100 or $125 basketball …

Telling Wonders: Ethnographic And Political Discourse In The Work Of Herodotus, Rosaria Vignolo Munson

Self-Determination And The American Indian: A Case Study, Milo Colton Jan 2001

Self-Determination And The American Indian: A Case Study, Milo Colton

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The United States has repeatedly victimized indigenous populations by stripping away tribal sovereignty and self-determination. One such example is Indian tribal reservations historical absence of jurisdictional autonomy. Prior to 1953, Indian tribal reservations shared jurisdiction with the federal government, allowing some semblance of autonomy. However, passage of Congress’s Public Law 280 erased this form of self-determination. This law enabled states to assume all civil and criminal jurisdiction over Indian tribal reservations. More recently, however, reservations have slowly begun to regain jurisdictional autonomy through the process of retrocession: the act of returning something taken. The achievements of the Winnebago Tribe of …

Reading Changes In Family Support Through Regional Development In China, Ge Lin Jan 2001

Reading Changes In Family Support Through Regional Development In China, Ge Lin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This article examines the degree to which the traditional family support system would be reshaped by the modernization and industrialization from a geo-developmental perspective. In particular, we examine the impact of rapid social changes and economic developments on family support for older parents in contemporary urban China to assess trends that might lead to a different path from the western style of old-age support purported by modernization theory. Based on the 1992 Survey on China’s Support Systems for the Elderly, the study divides the sample from three levels of economic development, which in turn, are used as proxies for developmental …
