Examination Of A Method For Increasing Adjustment To And Compliance With Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (Cpap) In Persons With Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome., Jack Allen Johnson Jr Jan 2001

Examination Of A Method For Increasing Adjustment To And Compliance With Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (Cpap) In Persons With Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome., Jack Allen Johnson Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a serious medical condition that occurs during sleep and consists of episodes of complete (respiratory pauses) or partial obstruction (hypoventilation) of the upper airway. Approximately 80% of persons diagnosed with OSAS are prescribed nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment, which has proven to be the treatment of choice for OSAS. However, noncompliance with CPAP treatment in OSAS patients is a widely recognized problem, and many persons refuse CPAP as a treatment option or fail to use it reliably. Investigations of CPAP use in OSAS patients have generally found that nightly use averages less …

Parenting Practices As A Moderator Of Exposure To Community Violence., Nicole Francingues Lanclos Jan 2001

Parenting Practices As A Moderator Of Exposure To Community Violence., Nicole Francingues Lanclos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Numerous studies evidence that urban youth are exposed to epidemic proportions of community violence. Exposure to community violence has been associated with significant levels of distress including aggression, academic difficulties, anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Although it is clear that children who experience chronic levels of violence exposure are at increased risk for poor developmental outcome, the consequences of exposure are not the same for all children. Parenting factors found to buffer the effects of community violence exposure include family size, parental presence in the home, family support, parenting resources, family cohesion, and strong parental monitoring. It is less …

Show Me The Money: An Analysis Of The Impact Of Voter Recognition On The Campaign Spending Effects Of House And Senate Candidates., Nicholas Chad Long Jan 2001

Show Me The Money: An Analysis Of The Impact Of Voter Recognition On The Campaign Spending Effects Of House And Senate Candidates., Nicholas Chad Long

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this dissertation is campaign spending in congressional elections. I examine the benefits that candidates receive from campaign expenditures. I think that challengers receive greater benefits from spending than incumbents, but that the extent of these benefits depends on the type of challenger. High-quality challengers are those that have previous experience in an important elective office, while low-quality challengers lack this experience. Because of this experience, high-quality challengers enjoy a higher level of recognition among the electorate than low-quality challengers. I think that the benefits that challengers receive from expenditures are inversely related to the level of recognition …

Legal Systems, Decisionmaking, And The Science Of Earth's Systems: Procedural Missing Links, Nicholas A. Robinson Jan 2001

Legal Systems, Decisionmaking, And The Science Of Earth's Systems: Procedural Missing Links, Nicholas A. Robinson

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Decisionmakers disregard scientific findings regarding environmental conditions, despite recommendations of the 1992 "Earth Summit" in Agenda 21 that science should provide a foundation for sustainable development. Although environmental degradation trends continue to exacerbate, decisionmakers address only selected issues. This Article examines an analytic paradigm for evaluating when decisionmakers are ready to address a problem and describes the catalytic role that scientific information can serve in prompting remedial action. Unless systematic procedures require evaluation of environmental scientific findings in the normal course of decisionmaking, science will continue to be ignored. One hallmark of Environmental Law has been to fashion such procedures, …

Exploitation Of The Elite: A Case For Physician Unionization, Dionne L. Koller Jan 2001

Exploitation Of The Elite: A Case For Physician Unionization, Dionne L. Koller

All Faculty Scholarship

Our intuition tells us that physicians are elites, and therefore they cannot be exploited. Relying on this intuition, we adopt policies which attempt to provide a health care system that gives first-quality care, at the lowest prices, delivered through a “free-market” system. As the key gatekeepers to health care, physicians are thus caught in the middle. Top-notch American health care costs money and for-profit MCOs must watch their bottom line. Rationing, therefore, is key. The issue is, assuming we have decided that free-market health care is the solution, how much should physicians have to sacrifice in the name of the …

Resurrecting Incipiency: From Von's Grocery To Consumer Choice, Robert H. Lande Jan 2001

Resurrecting Incipiency: From Von's Grocery To Consumer Choice, Robert H. Lande

All Faculty Scholarship

The merger incipiency doctrine is virtually ignored in the courts today. This article argues that it should be resurrected, and it also explores the ways that effectuating Congressional intent in the area would reinvigorate merger policy.

The article documents how the legislative history of the antimerger statutes shows that Congress intended mergers to be evaluated under an incipiency approach, and explores the possible meanings of this idea. It then shows that this is a strong basis for reviving significantly stricter or more prophylactic merger enforcement.

The article shows how there are aspects of the doctrine that could be revived without …

Crime, Punishment And Penal Policy, Ian O'Donnell Jan 2001

Crime, Punishment And Penal Policy, Ian O'Donnell

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Academic interest in crime and punishment in Ireland has grown in recent years and a number of important books have appeared (Bacik and O'Connell 1998, Brewer et al 1997, McCullagh 1996, O'Mahony 1993, O'Malley 2000). However any attempt to create a detailed understanding of the criminal justice process is frustrated by a lack of data. Statistical information is often published years in arrears, is of poor quality and is uncritically accepted as accurate and meaningful. The purpose of this paper is to give a snapshot of current understanding of the criminal justice system and to highlight a small number of …
