Preliminary X-Ray Diffraction Studies Of The Transcriptional Inhibitory Antibody Fab41.4, Johanna Mazlo, Robyn L. Stanfield, Ian A. Wilson, Steven H. Hinrichs, John J. Stezowski

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The binding of transcription factor ATF-1 to DNA contributes to gene expression and regulation of cell growth. Antibody Mab41.4, raised against ATF-1, and its derivatives Fab41.4 and scFv41.4 inhibit specific DNA binding in vitro and induce apoptotic death of tumor cells in vivo. Structural studies of Fab41.4 were performed to gain insight into the mechanism of action of this potentially therapeutic antibody. The optimal conditions for crystallization of Fab41.4 were determined. Crystals were needle-like in appearance, displayed C2 space-group symmetry and diffracted to a resolution of 1.6 Å. The unit-cell parameters were determined to be a = 186.64, b = …

2000 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Trafficking in persons is a fundamental and crucially important challenge in the areas of human rights and law enforcement. Based on reliable estimates, as the Congress has noted, at least 700,000 persons, especially women and children, are trafficked each year across international borders. Some observers estimate that the number may be significantly higher. Victims are forced to toil in sweatshops, construction sites, brothels, and fields. Deprived of the enjoyment of their human rights, many victims are subjected to threats against their person and family, violence, horrific living conditions, and dangerous workplaces. Some victims have answered advertisements believing that they will …

Including A Student With An Attention Problem: Strategies For Including A Student With An Attention Problem In The General Education Classroom, Mark S. Brown Ed.D., Patricia Ilderton

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

A student with an attention problem may meet with academic problems when she is placed in the general education classroom. The general education teacher with assistance from the special education intervention specialist should collaboratively develop curriculum and environmental adaptations that will allow the included student to meet with greater academic and social success. This observational study offers strategies for working with a child with an attention problem for both the general education teacher and the special education intervention specialist. Academic and curriculum strategies are presented to proactively address the social and academic strengths of a student with attention problems who …

Life And Times Of Individuals With Mental Retardation: 40 Years Of History, Rhonda S. Black Ph.D., Beverly A. Salas

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

If we look to the not so distant past, we see a history of lost opportunities for employment and the chance to meaningfully contribute to society for individuals with mental retardation (Murphy & Rogan, 1995). Many issues surround why these individuals have not been more included within our society, particularly in the employment sector. Fears, questions, and concerns abound when looking at these issues. Such questions are: Why would I want to hire an individual with mental retardation? How much cost is associated with various accommodations that may be required? What unknowns are involved in hiring a person with mental …

Genetic Diversity In Banana Weevil Cosmopolites Sordidus, Populations In Banana Growing Regions Of The World, Vincent Oduol Ochieng Jan 2001

Genetic Diversity In Banana Weevil Cosmopolites Sordidus, Populations In Banana Growing Regions Of The World, Vincent Oduol Ochieng

All PhD Dissertations

Genetic variability in banana weevil populations was analyzed in a large number of samples obtained from 15 banana growing tropical countries using random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD). A total of 46 RAPD markers were studied. Within polymorphism as measured by percentage of polymorphic RAPDs, varied between 78.3% and 97.8%. Genetic variability was measured using Shannon's information index and partitioned into between and within populations components. Overall, genetic variation among C. sordidus populations was (Hsp-Hpop)/ Hsp = 25.3%. The genetic diversity for the species (Hsp) was 83.4%. Mean of within population value (Hpop) for all populations was 62.3%. The total genetic …

Female Circumcision, Lisa Meyerhardt

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

It's easy for us to be self-righteous and rant about the cruelty of female circumcision. However, people in first world countries are often just as destructive, if not more so, to their bodies.

A Window To The Past, Krista Adamovich

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

Lenin promised peace to the Russian people, but it was an illusion that never came, for the country where my great-grandfather remained with the majority of my family soon sunk into civil war.

Krista Adamovich: " When I was a child, my family and I would make the trek to my grandparents' house in Yonkers to celebrate mass with them once a month. I remember always dreading sitting in that uncomfortable pew listening to a priest speak the Russian language that I knew so little of. I never told my friends where I was on those Sunday mornings because …

Monterey-Seaside Quadrangles : Earthquake Fault Zones And The Local Building Policy, Chris Pilson Jan 2001

Monterey-Seaside Quadrangles : Earthquake Fault Zones And The Local Building Policy, Chris Pilson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

he population of the Monterey peninsula is increasing. Developers are looking to expand housing and other commercial and public building into previously undeveloped areas. Because faults cut through the peninsula and surrounding areas, the possibility of building on potentially seismically hazardous areas increases as the population expands. Upon examination of the current Monterey County policies on building and planning I found those policies did not fully reflect the current scientific knowledge about active faults in the region. The Monterey County General Area Plan is currently being revised as a normal process of revising the Plan every 20 years. The last …

Effects Of Waterfowl On A City Pond's Water Quality : Case Study Of Locke-Paddon Park Pond In Marina, California, Kendia Herrington Jan 2001

Effects Of Waterfowl On A City Pond's Water Quality : Case Study Of Locke-Paddon Park Pond In Marina, California, Kendia Herrington

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

etlands around the world are decreasing, leaving large numbers of waterfowl small areas to inhabit. Dense populations of waterfowl risk destroying small wetlands by decreasing the water quality. Locke-Paddon Park Pond in Marine, California is a small wetland set aside for the Pacific flyway and for a public park. This project looks at the possible effects the waterfowl have on the water quality of the pond through their feces. To test the effect of waterfowl on water quality I selected duplicate sites of three types: waterfowl-without-vegetation, waterfowl-with-vegetation, and no-waterfowl-with-vegetation. The temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, fecal coliform, and phosphate were measured …

Integration Of Depth Data Onto A Video Camera Backpack For Use With California Sea Lions, Sarah Ann Radloff Jan 2001

Integration Of Depth Data Onto A Video Camera Backpack For Use With California Sea Lions, Sarah Ann Radloff

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Instrumentation attached to captive marine mammals for open ocean research is an innovative and valuable approach for studying marine mammals in the wild. Direct real-time underwater observations are still needed for a variety of research projects. The goal of this project was to develop and test a system for recording and playback of sea lion dive depth data using the audio channel of an underwater video camera. A pressure transducer was installed into an aluminum waterproof camera housing. A signal conditioning circuit was built to translate pressure (depth) signals into audio signals that could be recorded on the audio channel …

Highlights Of Drought Policy And Related Science In Australia And The U.S.A., David H. White, Donald A. Wilhite, Bruce O’Meagher, Graeme L. Hammer

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Patterns of water supply and use in Australia and the U.S.A. differ in many ways. This results in different perceptions concerning the nature of drought and policy approaches to its management. This paper discusses the differences and similarities and explores lessons that policy makers in both countries can learn from one another. A key difference between the two countries is that whereas drought is perceived in Australia essentially in terms of its impact on agriculture, in the U.S. both perceptions and policy are also heavily influenced by the impact of drought on urban communities. This has led to different policy …
