Regulating Sexual Images On The Web: Last Call For Miller Time, But New Issues Remain Untapped, Clay Calvert Jan 2001

Regulating Sexual Images On The Web: Last Call For Miller Time, But New Issues Remain Untapped, Clay Calvert

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The article suggests that the test for obscene speech under the Miller case should be abandoned because the new technologies and innovations of the World Wide Web present significant difficulties in apply the test in its traditional form. The author recommends alternatives, which would alleviate the problems of applying the Miller test to the Internet. First, he advocates adopting a national community standard. Second, he suggests that a "Web-specific test for obscenity" be created. Part I of the article examines the first high profile case, which exposed the flaws in applying the Miller test to the Internet. Part II discusses …

Field-Scale Electrical Conductivity Mapping For Delineating Soil Condition, Cinthia K. Johnson, John Doran, Harold R. Duke, Brian J. Wienhold, Kent M. Eskridge, John F. Shanahan

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Traditional sampling methods are inadequate for assessing the interrelated physical, chemical, and biological soil properties responsible for variations in agronomic yield and ecological potentials across a landscape. Recent advances in computers, global positioning systems, and large-scale sensors offer new opportunities for mapping heterogeneous patterns in soil condition. We evaluated field-scale apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) mapping for delineating soil properties correlated with productivity and ecological properties. A contiguous section of farmland (250 ha), managed as eight fields in a no-till winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–corn (Zea mays L.)–millet (Panicum miliaceum L.)–fallow rotation, was ECa mapped (≈0- to …

Chapter 08: Conclusions And Recommendations, David Layne Coppock, Corinne Valdivia, Jim Yazman, Christian Jetté, João S. De Queiroz, Lisa Markowitz, Isaac M. Ortega

Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga

Here we review brief summaries by chapter and then derive some integrated conclusions across chapters. Recommendations are presented with respect to further research, outreach and policy consideration. Because several years have passed between the end of our field work and publication of this synthesis volume, we end with an epilogue that highlights changes and key events that happened at San José Llanga (SJL) and with collaborating institutions in Bolivia between 1996-9.

Chapter 07: Patterns Of Technology Adoption At San José Llanga: Lessons In Agricultural Change, Lisa Markowitz, Corinne Valdivia

Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga

The objectives for this chapter include determination of: (1) How social and economic events have influenced key phases of technology transfer at San José Llanga (SJL); (2) how household- level factors have influenced adoption of new technology; (3) whether males and females, as well as various wealth classes, have similarly benefited from adoption of new technology; and (4) whether technology adoption has influenced sustainability of the production system. Answering these questions helps us understand what factors facilitate or constrain technology transfer to rural producers. Technology transfer is a vital, culminating and problematic process for research.

Chapter 06: Household Socioeconomic Diversity And Coping Response To A Drought Year At San José Llanga, Corinne Valdivia Jan 2001

Chapter 06: Household Socioeconomic Diversity And Coping Response To A Drought Year At San José Llanga, Corinne Valdivia

Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga

The first objective of work presented in this chapter was to examine if households at SJL indeed pursued different economic strategies. For example, would some households rely more on crops, livestock, wage labour or various mixtures of these enterprises, and why? The second objective was to determine how different economic strategies influenced household sustainability, namely the ability to generate wealth, be opportunistic and cope with drought. In particular, I was interested in the role of livestock (especially small ruminants), off-farm employment and income transfers in mitigating fluctuations in household income (Rosenzweig and Wolpin 1985; Kusterer 1989; Fafchamps 1992; Reardon et …

Chapter 05: The Grazing Livestock Of San José Llanga: Multiple-Species Resource Use And The Management And Productivity Of Sheep, David Layne Coppock, Isaac M. Ortega, Jim Yazman, João S. De Quieroz, Humberto Alzérreca-Angelo

Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga

The main objective of the joint IBTA/SR-CRSP project in Bolivia was to assess the overall role of small ruminants in the ecological and economic sustainability of an agropastoral system. Prominent was a mandate for us to investigate: (1) Whether small ruminants were important contributors to environmental degradation; and (2) whether there were feasible improvements in management that could mitigate negative impacts of small ruminants on natural resources and increase efficiency of animal production (see Chapter 1: Project objectives and research approach). These issues are important in light of recent controversy concerning environmental degradation of the world’s rangelands. On one hand …

Examining The Gap: The Relationship Between Levels Of Acculturation And Scholastic Achievement Test (Sat) Scores Among African American College Students, Tonika E. Duren

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study was designed to examine the relationship between acculturation and SAT exam scores. One-hundred and seventy African American college men and women from a midwestern university participated in the study; 78 had SAT scores available. Participants' informed consent was received to obtain SAT exam scores and demographic information from the university's Institutional Research and Testing Center (IRT). Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the African American Acculturation Survey-Revised (AAAS-R; Klonoff & Landrine, 2000). Bivariate correlations were conducted to examine the relationship between African American acculturation and SAT scores and to examine the relationship between AAAS-R subscale scores and …

Something Borrowed, Something Blue: Why Disability Law Claims Are Different, S. Elizabeth Malloy Jan 2001

Something Borrowed, Something Blue: Why Disability Law Claims Are Different, S. Elizabeth Malloy

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Described as one of the century's most significant pieces of civil rights legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990' has been widely hailed as establishing a new foundation for disability policy Senator Harkin, the primary sponsor of the law, called it "the 20th century Emancipation Proclamation for all persons with disabilities." President Bush predicted that the Act would "open up all aspects of American life to individuals with disabilities" and end the "unjustified segregation and exclusion of persons with disabilities from the mainstream of American life."

Congress enacted the ADA to ensure "equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living …

Inclusion: What Are Teachers Doing To Accommodate For Special Needs Students In The Classroom, Brenda Stevens Ph.D., Caroline Everington Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

Elementary teachers (N=42) from a district implementing inclusive practice were surveyed to determine: a) if the frequency of curricular modifications made differ by type of student disability, b) if there is a difference in the frequency of curricular modifications made for special and typical students, and c) if a relationship exists between modifications made for special needs students and for typical students. Results indicate the frequency of teachers’ curricular modifications does not differ by type of disability; that they make significantly more frequent modifications for special needs students; and that there is a significant relationship between the frequency of modifications …

Stages Of Preservice Development In A Professional Development School For Teachers Of Students With Emotional Disturbance, Suzanne Tochterman

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

This study was designed to identify and describe the stages of preservice development in a Professional Development School (PDS) for teachers of students with emotional disturbance. This study investigated two questions: (a) How does a preservice teacher for students with serious emotional disturbance in a one year full time PDS progress through a series of developmental stages, and (b) what are the opportunities that contribute to the learning of the preservice teacher in a PDS?

This was a qualitative study in which seven data sources from preservice teachers were collected over a nine-month period. These included videotaped teaching episodes, informal …

Ethnocentrism And Feminism: Using A Contextual Methodology In International Women's Rights Advocacy And Education, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez Jan 2001

Ethnocentrism And Feminism: Using A Contextual Methodology In International Women's Rights Advocacy And Education, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez

Faculty Scholarship

I have proposed a method of comparative analysis that respects culture by contextualizing analysis of women's issues. I believe that we can help women around the world improve their lives while retaining their cultural values and identity. We can use comparative law as a tool to help identify laws that successfully address women's needs and those that do not. Comparative theory does not posit an evaluation of the law determining which law or legal system is "better." Rather, comparative theory can illuminate differences based on systemic and cultural diversity. Understanding these differences can help us understand how best to use …
