The Irony Of News Coverage: How The Media Harm Their Own First Amendment Rights, Clay Calvert, Robert D. Richards Jan 2001

The Irony Of News Coverage: How The Media Harm Their Own First Amendment Rights, Clay Calvert, Robert D. Richards

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

This article argues that the First Amendment protection provided to the news media today actually may be harming -- unjustifiably and unnecessarily -- the scope of First Amendment protection given to other sectors of the media, most notably, the Hollywood entertainment industry and non-mainstream journalists. Using the death of Princess Diana and the school shootings at Columbine High School to illustrate a seven-step process that the authors assert gives rise to this disturbing irony, the article contends that high-profile journalistic coverage of these events produced false public perceptions of reality and media culpability - a false perception that the paparazzi …

Economics V. Equity Ii: The European Experience, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2001

Economics V. Equity Ii: The European Experience, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

Lawmakers in the European Union and its member states, like their counterparts in the United States, increasingly are using economic tools to protect the environment while reducing their focus on command and control regulation. The reliance on economic approaches to environmental protection may disproportionately impact low income and minority communities. Although evidence of environmental injustice in Europe is not as strong as in the United States, several recent studies demonstrate that traditional environmental protection measures in Europe have disproportionately funneled pollution to low income communities. Economic-based environmental measures can only exacerbate that trend.

A nonhuman primate model for malaria vaccine development allowing reliable, stringent sporozoite challenge and evaluation of both cellular and antibody responses is needed. We therefore constructed a multicomponent, multistage DNA vaccine for the simian malaria species Plasmodium knowlesi including two preerythrocytic- stage antigens, the circumsporozoite protein (PkCSP) and sporozoite surface protein 2 (PkSSP2), and two blood stage antigens, apical merozoite antigen 1 (PkAMA1) and merozoite surface protein 1 (PkMSP1p42), as well as recombinant canarypox viruses encoding the four antigens (ALVAC-4). The DNA vaccine plasmids expressed the corresponding antigens in vitro and induced antiparasite antibodies in mice. Groups of four rhesus …

Chloroquine (CQ)–resistant Plasmodium vivax malaria was first reported 12 years ago, nearly 30 years after the recognition of CQ-resistant P. falciparum. Loss of CQ efficacy now poses a severe problem for the prevention and treatment of both diseases. Mutations in a digestive vacuole protein encoded by a 13-exon gene, pfcrt, were shown recently to have a central role in the CQ resistance (CQR) of P. falciparum. Whether mutations in pfcrt orthologues of other Plasmodium species are involved in CQR remains an open question. This report describes pfcrt homologues from P. vivax, P. knowlesi, P. berghei, and …

United States Navy: Publications

Malaria causes illness or death in unprotected travelers. Primaquine prevents malaria by attacking liver-stage parasites, a property distinguishing it from most chemoprophylactics and obviating 4-week postexposure dosing. A daily adult regimen of 30 mg primaquine prevented malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax for 20 weeks in 95 of 97 glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)–normal Javanese transmigrants in Papua, Indonesia. In comparison, 37 of 149 subjects taking placebo in a parallel trial became parasitemic. The protective efficacy of primaquine against malaria was 93% (95% confidence interval [CI] 71%–98%); against P. falciparum it was 88% (95% CI 48%–97%), and 192% for P. …

Invasion Of Human Respiratory Epithelial Cells By Bordetella Pertussis: Possible Role For A Filamentous Hemagglutinin Arg-Gly-Asp Sequence And Α5Β1 Integrin, Yoshio Ishibashi, David A. Relman, Akemi Nishikawa Jan 2001

Invasion Of Human Respiratory Epithelial Cells By Bordetella Pertussis: Possible Role For A Filamentous Hemagglutinin Arg-Gly-Asp Sequence And Α5Β1 Integrin, Yoshio Ishibashi, David A. Relman, Akemi Nishikawa

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Bordetella pertussis, the agent of whooping cough, is capable of invading human respiratory epithelial cells. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms by which B. pertussis invades the human lung epithelial cell line A549 and normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells. In vitro adhesion and invasion assays using both cell types with a virulent B. pertussis strain and its isogenic mutants revealed profound defects in a mutant deficient in filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA) expression. In addition, a mutant in which an FHA Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) site had been changed to Arg-Ala-Asp had significantly diminished invasiveness, although its adhesiveness was comparable to …

Visual P3 Findings In Mission Indian Youth: Relationship To Family History Of Alcohol Dependence And Behavioral Problems, Cindy L. Ehlers, Tamara L. Wall, Consuelo Garcia-Andrade, Evelyn Phillips Jan 2001

Visual P3 Findings In Mission Indian Youth: Relationship To Family History Of Alcohol Dependence And Behavioral Problems, Cindy L. Ehlers, Tamara L. Wall, Consuelo Garcia-Andrade, Evelyn Phillips

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Native Americans have some of the highest rates of alcohol abuse and dependence, yet risk factors for problem drinking remain relatively unknown. The amplitude of the P3 component of the event-related potential (ERP) has been suggested to be an index of ‘vulnerability to alcoholism’, especially when it is elicited by visual tasks in younger individuals. Visual P3 tasks, however, have not been previously investigated in Native American youth. One hundred and four Mission Indian youth between the ages of 7 and 13 years participated in the study. ERPs were collected using two visual target paradigms: a facial discrimination and an …

City Of Williams, Et Al., Plaintiffs, V. Michael Dombeck, Et Al., Defendants: No. Civ.A. 00-0066 Ckk, David Getches

Litigation

Case summary: The District Court granted in part and denied in part plaintiffs' claims against the United States Forest Services' decisions to approve land exchanges near the Grand Canyon. Plaintiffs' claims allege violations of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and the Federal Land Policy and Exchange Management Act (FLPMA). The court dismissed plaintiff's claims in violation of FLPMA as unripe because the Forest Service's decision to exchange land is dependent on title transfer and rezoning, neither of which have occurred or are imminent. The Court granted defendants summary judgment as to violation of NEPA stipulated in counts …

Toxicity Of Cedar River Water And Sediment To Larval Walleye, Todd A. Phillips, Robert C. Summerfelt Jan 2001

Toxicity Of Cedar River Water And Sediment To Larval Walleye, Todd A. Phillips, Robert C. Summerfelt

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Although all anthropogenic stressors affecting aquatic ecosystems have not been isolated, suspended solids, sediment, and pesticides are believed to be major factors in agroecosystems. In the spring of 1998 and 1999, static 48-h tests were conducted to determine the toxicity of water and sediment collected from the Cedar River to prolarval, postlarval I, and postlarval II walleye (Sttzostedzon vitreum). River water and sediment were not more toxic to any larval stage of walleye than reference water and sediment. Cedar River sediments, suspended solids, and water were examined for occurrence of the most common herbicides and insecticides in Iowa. No pesticides …

Self-Reported High Risk Locations Of Drug Use Among Drug Offenders, Steve Sussman, Susan L. Ames, Clyde W. Dent, Alan W. Stacy Jan 2001

Self-Reported High Risk Locations Of Drug Use Among Drug Offenders, Steve Sussman, Susan L. Ames, Clyde W. Dent, Alan W. Stacy

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The present study provides a detailed, multiple-choice, self-report analysis of home, work, and other public locations where drug offenders report using drugs. In addition, these settings were examined as a function of gender, ethnicity, type of drug used, and drug abuse/dependence status. The participants for the present study were 462 individuals attending drug diversion programs in southern California. The single most frequently reported location of use was the subjects' living room with a small group of friends. However, heavier users used different drugs across a greater variety of locations. Not surprisingly, drugs were used least at work (though a surprising …
