Poverty & Welfare: Does Compassionate Conservatism Have A Heart?, Peter B. Edelman Jan 2001

Poverty & Welfare: Does Compassionate Conservatism Have A Heart?, Peter B. Edelman

Georgetown Law Faculty Lectures and Appearances

I am honored to deliver a lecture in memory of Edward Sobota, especially because such distinguished speakers have preceded me.

Our question here is: does compassionate conservatism have a heart? Almost five years have passed since the 1996 welfare law was enacted. So, we might ask, where are we and where are we going, and even more to the point, what are the prospects for better policy and outcomes on poverty generally? One American child in six is still poor, and the number of families in economic difficulty is much larger than that. That is the context in which we …

Mature Dendritic Cells Infected With Canarypox Virus Elicit Strong Anti-Human Immunodeficiency Virus Cd8+ And Cd4+ T-Cell Responses From Chronically Infected Individuals, Jose Engelmayer, Marie C. Larsson, Andrew W. Lee Jan 2001

Mature Dendritic Cells Infected With Canarypox Virus Elicit Strong Anti-Human Immunodeficiency Virus Cd8+ And Cd4+ T-Cell Responses From Chronically Infected Individuals, Jose Engelmayer, Marie C. Larsson, Andrew W. Lee

Publications

Recombinant canarypox virus vectors containing human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) sequences are promising vaccine candidates, as they replicate poorly in human cells. However, when delivered intramuscularly the vaccines have induced inconsistent and in some cases transient antigen-specific cytotoxic T-cell (CTL) responses in seronegative volunteers. An attractive way to enhance these responses would be to target canarypox virus to professional antigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells (DCs). We studied (i) the interaction between canarypox virus and DCs and (ii) the T-cell responses induced by DCs infected with canarypox virus vectors containing HIV-1 genes. Mature and not immature DCs resisted the …

Antigen-Specific Inhibition Of Effector T Cell Function In Humans After Injection Of Immature Dendritic Cells, Madhav V. Dhodapkar, Ralph M. Steinman, Joseph Krasovsky Jan 2001

Antigen-Specific Inhibition Of Effector T Cell Function In Humans After Injection Of Immature Dendritic Cells, Madhav V. Dhodapkar, Ralph M. Steinman, Joseph Krasovsky

Publications

Immunostimulatory properties of dendritic cells (DCs) are linked to their maturation state. Injection of mature DCs rapidly enhances antigen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cell immunity in humans. Here we describe the immune response to a single injection of immature DCs pulsed with influenza matrix peptide (MP) and keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) in two healthy subjects. In contrast to prior findings using mature DCs, rejection of immature DCs in both subjects led to the specific inhibition of MP-specific CD8+ T cell effector function in freshly isolated T cells and the appearance of MP-specific interleukin 10-producing cells. When pre-and …

Dendritic Cells Cross-Present Latency Gene Products From Epstein-Barr Virus-Transformed B Cells And Expand Tumor-Reactive Cd8+ Killer T Cells, Marion S. Subklewe, Casoer Paludan, Mingli Tsang Jan 2001

Dendritic Cells Cross-Present Latency Gene Products From Epstein-Barr Virus-Transformed B Cells And Expand Tumor-Reactive Cd8+ Killer T Cells, Marion S. Subklewe, Casoer Paludan, Mingli Tsang

Publications

Dendritic cells (DCs) are not targets for infection by the transforming Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). To test if the adjuvant role of DCs could be harnessed against EBV latency genes by cross-presentation, DCs were allowed to process either autologous or human histocompatibility leukocyte antigen (HLA)-mismatched, transformed, B lymphocyte cell lines (LCLs) that had been subject to apoptotic or necrotic cell death. After phagocytosis of small numbers of either type of dead LCL, which lacked direct immune-stimulatory capacity, DCs could expand CD8+ T cells capable of killing LCLs that were HLA matched to the DCs. Necrotic EBV-transformed, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) …

Dendritic Cells Induce Peripheral T Cell Unresponsiveness Under Steady State Conditions In Vivo, Daniel Hawiger, Kayo Inaba, Yair Dorsett Jan 2001

Dendritic Cells Induce Peripheral T Cell Unresponsiveness Under Steady State Conditions In Vivo, Daniel Hawiger, Kayo Inaba, Yair Dorsett

Publications

Dendritic cells (DCs) have the capacity to initiate immune responses, but it has been postulated that they may also be involved in inducing peripheral tolerance. To examine the function of DCs in the steady state we devised an antigen delivery system targeting these specialized antigen presenting cells in vivo using a monoclonal antibody to a DC-restricted endocytic receptor, DEC-205. Our experiments show that this route of antigen delivery to DCs is several orders of magnitude more efficient than free peptide in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) in inducing T cell activation and cell division. However, T cells activated by antigen delivered …

Functions Of The Rat's Temporal Association Cortex In Higher Perceptual Functions, Summer L. Maki Jan 2001

Functions Of The Rat's Temporal Association Cortex In Higher Perceptual Functions, Summer L. Maki

The Corinthian

The role of the rodent temporal cortex in relational perception was investigated. Eighteen Long Evans rats were separated into three surgical groups (sham, partial striate, and Te2/3) and trained on a preoperative and postoperative discrimination task. The rats were then presented a series of relational judgement trials consisting of both between category judgments and within category judgments. It was hypothesized that the rats with Te2/3 lesions would perform as well as controls on the preoperative and postoperative discrimination task, but show a considerable behavioral dysfunction on the tests of visual relational perception. The results showed no differences across groups in …

And Unto Dust Return: The Remembered Earth, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2001

And Unto Dust Return: The Remembered Earth, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

The earth is a primal resource of human imagination; its conceptual and creative tie to literature is pervasive, in part, because of the profound ambiguity of our relationship to it. Home and prison, earth holds in bondage the life it sustains. The paradox of life as freedom and life as bondage gives rise to the conflicting task of holding to the good earth, yet becoming free of it. This paradox and conflicting effort forms a basic pattern in western thought. A deep ambivalence and generative tension frames metaphors in literature from the earliest mythic and creation stories to the most …

Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2001 - 2002, Singapore Management University

Report to Stakeholders

If the first year of incorporation was the paving of the foundation for SMU, the second year was one of laying the first building blocks. For the university, this was a year for surging ahead – of exploration and adventure. With a sizeable student population, a faculty of international repute and two schools going on three, SMU is growing from strength to strength at an unbelievable rate. But beyond sheer numbers, I sense and see a spirit of fervour and adventure in the work of students, faculty and staff in every corner of this institution that we have founded. Our …

A Durkheimian Analysis Of Anomie And Deviance In The National Football League: An Exploratory Case Study, Eric M. Carter Jan 2001

A Durkheimian Analysis Of Anomie And Deviance In The National Football League: An Exploratory Case Study, Eric M. Carter

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to determine whether Durkheim’s concept of anomie applies to National Football League players. This study was an attempt to discover if and why NFL players are more likely to commit deviant acts. Why do these players that seemingly have everything throw their lives away by committing crimes? This study attempts to address these questions by linking Durkheim’s classic anomie theory with the deviance in the NFL.

In Durkheim’s book, The Division of Labour in Society (1893), anomie emerges through society’s transition from mechanical to organic solidarity. In this, economic change is too fast for …

Chronic Pain: A Study Of Low Back Pain Patients From Southern West Virginia And Eastern Kentucky, Nickandrea M. Cooke Jan 2001

Chronic Pain: A Study Of Low Back Pain Patients From Southern West Virginia And Eastern Kentucky, Nickandrea M. Cooke

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) was administered to 60 males ranging from 22 to 65 years of age. Subjects were seeking treatment at Mountain Comprehensive Care Center, an outpatient mental health center, for depression/anxiety with a secondary diagnosis of chronic pain stemming from low back pain related to an injury. This study considered T-scores of a K-corrected profile using Scales F (Faking, 1 (Hypochondriasis), 2 (Depression), and 3 (Hysteria). Statistical interpretation of data was obtained through use of the General Linear Model at the p < .05 level of significance to determine variance among the groups. Subjects were assigned to three of six groups based on the criteria of age (less than 35 years vs. 35 years or older); duration of pain (less than one year's duration vs. one year or more duration); and medical evidence available (with clinical evidence to support an orthopedic diagnosis vs. those with no clinical evidence available). The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference between groups on the age variable and the only significant differences on the medical evidence variable were for Scales 2 (D) and 3 (Hy). On the duration of pain variable, significant differences among groups for all scales were noted. Also, chronic low back pain patients from this geographic area presented with extreme elevations on Scale F and high elevations on Scales 1 (Hs), 2 (D), and 3 (Hy), with a higher elevation on Scale 2 (D).

Natural Succession Of Benthic Populations In Constructed Sediment Ponds And Ditches In Southwestern West Virginia, Robin E. Dolin Jan 2001

Natural Succession Of Benthic Populations In Constructed Sediment Ponds And Ditches In Southwestern West Virginia, Robin E. Dolin

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Strip mining causes major disturbances of the natural environment. One such disturbance is the creation of valley fills, which often fill in the headwaters of small streams. Runoff from these valley fills can cause heavy siltation as well as acid and heavy metal deposition downstream. One way to combat this problem is through the construction of sedimentation ponds, which slow down the flow of water so that sediment can settle out and water chemistry can be altered before the water is discharged into the stream. Since these ponds are, in effect, temporarily replacing small headwaters once present, the question is …

Analysis Of E. Coli Dna From Selected Source(S) Using Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis, Sheema Doshi Jan 2001

Analysis Of E. Coli Dna From Selected Source(S) Using Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis, Sheema Doshi

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The presence of fecal coliforms in surface waters is a public health issue throughout the United States and Canada. The presence of Escherichia coli (E. coli) indicates recent fecal contamination from either animal or human sources. To solve this growing problem one must identify the source(s) of such contamination by creating a database of DNA profiles of£. coli isolates. Hence, tracking the source(s) of E. coli can help link water contamination to animal source(s) of contamination. In this study, pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to analyze DNA from E. coli isolates from known animals. For PFGE, the bacterial …
