Closing The Dutch Door: Review Of De Briefwisseling Van Anthonie Heinsius 1702-1720, Ed. A.]. Veenendaal, Jr., With M. T. A. Schouten., John B. Hattendorf

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

This is the nineteenth and final volume in A J. Veenendaal's magnificent edition of the private correspondence of the Grand Pensionary of Holland, Anthonie Heinsius (1641-1720). Fully described in a previous issue of this journal (see "A Dutch Door to Europe, 1702-1720," Documentary Editing 19 [September 1997]: 57-61), Heinsius's correspondence has long been recognized as the single most important source for European international history during the War of the Spanish Succession and its immediate aftermath. Over the course of a thirty-three-year project, this volume completes the total of 23,274 edited letters in Dutch, French, German, and English from the period …

Style Matters: Applying--Egads!--Theory To Documentary Editing, Tracy Duvall Sep 2001

Style Matters: Applying--Egads!--Theory To Documentary Editing, Tracy Duvall

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Historical editors rarely cite theory to justify particular editorial practices. Instead, they usually make appeals to common sense and personal experience. Of course, "eyeballing it" is legitimate, but documentary editors should inform themselves about linguistic and literary theory to create better-informed policies for transcription and translation. Increasing theoretical sophistication will lead editors to pay more attention to reproducing an author's style. (The hyphenation of re-producing is meant to remind the reader that transcription and translation are creative acts [thus, produce] but that this creativity is constrained by the goal of fidelity to the source text [thus, re-].)

Cloistered Correspondence: Review Of When Prophecy Still Had A Voice: The Letters Of Thomas Merton And Robert Lax, Ed. Arthur W. Biddle., Claire Badaracco Sep 2001

Cloistered Correspondence: Review Of When Prophecy Still Had A Voice: The Letters Of Thomas Merton And Robert Lax, Ed. Arthur W. Biddle., Claire Badaracco

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The publication of these 346 letters over thirty years between Thomas Merton and his friend Robert Lax, who died in Olean, New York, three months before its publication, is timely, comprehensive, definitive, and a significant contribution to Merton studies. This is not light reading. Some of the correspondence is so encoded, privatized, and self-absorbed that the reader needs to compare the letters with the other works of the same period by these writers in order to make sense of things. The edition is scholarly, reliable, a solid addition to one's personal or university library, and highly recommended.

The Effect Of Elevation On Fungal Community Species Richness And Composition In Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2001, Valerie Johnson Sep 2001

The Effect Of Elevation On Fungal Community Species Richness And Composition In Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2001, Valerie Johnson

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study investigated the effect of elevation on the species richness of fungal populations on the Pacific slope of the Tilarán Mountains in Costa Rica. The hypothesis being that changes in abiotic factors caused by change in elevation would be more or less favorable to growth of fungal communities. There was a total of 103 morphospecies found in six elevational transects between 1575m and 1825m. Statistical analysis showed a negative correlation between species richness and elevation, and that there was a strong trend between species turnover and distance between transects. Although the negative correlation opposes the hypothesis, an explanation may …

Faunal Changes In Bromeliad Tank Communities As A Result Of Throughfall Ph Changes, September 2001, Clay Buchanan Sep 2001

Faunal Changes In Bromeliad Tank Communities As A Result Of Throughfall Ph Changes, September 2001, Clay Buchanan

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Throughfall in forests is known to increase pH as a result of many neutralizing components on the tree. The purpose of this study was to examine how the change in pH due to Throughfall, affected the faunal composition in bromeliad tank communities. A total of 46 bromeliad tanks were sampled, which contained 2300 protists in 18 morphospecies. No significant correlation was found between pH and height on the tree or pH and volume of the tank sample. A decrease in diversity was noticed with the increase in volume of water in the tanks corresponding to heavy rainfall caused by hurricane …

Islamic Legal Education: Malaysian Experience, Raihanah Abdullah Sep 2001

Islamic Legal Education: Malaysian Experience, Raihanah Abdullah

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Scholars of Islamic Law in the West have predicted the future for Islamic Law in Muslim countries as an amalgam of Islamic traditional law and western legal ideas and institutions with the latter are much more dominance than the former. The Muslims on the other hand have always believed that the future is for Islamic Law, although they differ in the methods and manners on how Islamic law can be made applicable without rejecting novel and modem ideas concerning family, economic activities and their ways of life. In religious practice and understanding of certain issues there is a difference between …

A Study Of The Effect Of Reception Of Works Of Art Through An Interactive Cd-Rom, László Halász, Károly Hantos, Balázs Faa Sep 2001

A Study Of The Effect Of Reception Of Works Of Art Through An Interactive Cd-Rom, László Halász, Károly Hantos, Balázs Faa

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article, "A Study of the Effect of Reception of Works of Art through an Interactive CD-ROM," Halász, Hantos, and Faa collected data on the aesthetic impact of art objects through multimedia. They constructed a CD-ROM out of various images, sounds and text. Items were offered to 135 secondary school subjects in the framework of directed interactive polychrome variations. The effect was studied partly by measuring viewing (reading) times for each item, and partly by semantic differential and attitude scales. The data for viewing time and phases, and of items of the semantic differential and attitude scales were analyzed …

The Construct Validity Of A Belgian Assessment Centre: A Comparison Of Different Models, Filip Lievens, Etienne Van Keer Sep 2001

The Construct Validity Of A Belgian Assessment Centre: A Comparison Of Different Models, Filip Lievens, Etienne Van Keer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigates the construct validity of a Belgian assessment centre through a comprehensive set of confirmatory factor analysis models. In particular, the general confirmatory factor analysis approach as well as the correlated uniqueness approach are fitted to the same data. Results replicate Sagie and Magnezy's (1997) finding that the correlated uniqueness model is appropriate to represent exercise effects in assessment centres, as a good fit and no estimation problems are obtained. In this model the dimensions explain 36% of variance, revealing evidence of convergent validity. Possibly, this is due to the careful design of this assessment centre. Evidence of …

Information Structures In Optimal Auctions, Dirk Bergemann, Martin Pesendorfer Sep 2001

Information Structures In Optimal Auctions, Dirk Bergemann, Martin Pesendorfer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A seller wishes to sell an object to one of multiple bidders. The valuations of the bidders are privately known. We consider the joint design problem in which the seller can decide the accuracy by which bidders learn their valuation and to whom to sell at what price. We establish that optimal information structures in an optimal auction exhibit a number of properties: (i) information structures can be represented by monotone partitions, (ii) the cardinality of each partition is finite, (iii) the partitions are asymmetric across agents. These properties imply that the optimal selling strategy of a seller can be …
