Tax Competition And E-Commerce, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Sep 2001

Tax Competition And E-Commerce, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In the last four years, there has been increasing concern by developed countries about the potential erosion of the corporate income tax base by "harmful tax competition" (in the European Union since 1997, in the OECD since 1998). However, the data on tax competition available to date present a mixed and somewhat puzzling picture. On the one hand, there is considerable evidence that effective corporate income tax rates in many countries have been declining, and that the worldwide effective tax rates on multinational enterprises (MNEs) have been going down as well. On the other hand, macroeconomic data from developed countries …

Indium-Silicon Co-Doping Of High-Aluminum-Content Algan For Solar Blind Photodetectors, V. Adivarahan, Grigory Simin, G. Tamulaitis, R. Srinivasan, J. Yang, M. Asif Khan, M. S. Shur, R. Gaska Sep 2001

Indium-Silicon Co-Doping Of High-Aluminum-Content Algan For Solar Blind Photodetectors, V. Adivarahan, Grigory Simin, G. Tamulaitis, R. Srinivasan, J. Yang, M. Asif Khan, M. S. Shur, R. Gaska

Faculty Publications

We report on an indium–silicon co-doping approach for high-Al-content AlGaN layers. Using this approach, very smooth crack-free n-type AlGaN films as thick as 0.5 μm with Al mole fraction up to 40% were grown over sapphire substrates. The maximum electron concentration in the layers, as determined by Hall measurements, was as high as 8×1017 cm−3 and the Hall mobility was up to 40 cm2/Vs. We used this doping technique to demonstrate solar-blind transparent Schottky barrierphotodetectors with the cut-off wavelength of 278 nm.

Magnetic Properties Of The Mnbi Intermetallic Compound, Jinbo Yang, Kishore Kamaraju, William B. Yelon, William Joseph James, Qingsheng Cai, A. Bollero Sep 2001

Magnetic Properties Of The Mnbi Intermetallic Compound, Jinbo Yang, Kishore Kamaraju, William B. Yelon, William Joseph James, Qingsheng Cai, A. Bollero

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A MnBi alloy containing over 90 wt% low-temperature phase (LTP) has been obtained by high-temperature sintering and magnetic purification. The coercivity of the bonded MnBi magnet increases with increasing temperatures. A coercivity of 2.0 T has been achieved at 400 K. The maximum energy product (BH)max; of the magnet is 7.7 MGOe (61 kJ/m3) and 4.6 MGOe (37 kJ/m3) at room temperature and 400 K, respectively. Neutron diffraction and magnetic data reveal a spin reorientation, which gives rise to low anisotropy fields and coercivity at lower temperatures for the LTP MnBi alloy.

Traditional Signal Pattern Recognition Versus Artificial Neural Networks For Nuclear Plant Diagnostics, Shahla Keyvan Sep 2001

Traditional Signal Pattern Recognition Versus Artificial Neural Networks For Nuclear Plant Diagnostics, Shahla Keyvan

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a new tool based on a traditional noise analysis technique for monitoring reactor components' signal condition. It also presents the performance of artificial neural networks for pattern recognition to the same set of reactor signals and provides a comparison of these two techniques. Reactor pump signals from the Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR-II) are utilized here. Collected signals such as pump power, pump speed, and pump pressure are obtained from already installed sensors in the reactor. The signals utilized are collected signals as well as generated signals simulating the pump shaft degradation progress. From the study of time …

Recoil Momentum Spectroscopy Of Highly Charged Ion Collisions On Magneto-Optically Trapped Na, J. W. Turkstra, R. Hoekstra, S. Knoop, D. Meyer, R. Morgenstern, Ronald E. Olson Sep 2001

Recoil Momentum Spectroscopy Of Highly Charged Ion Collisions On Magneto-Optically Trapped Na, J. W. Turkstra, R. Hoekstra, S. Knoop, D. Meyer, R. Morgenstern, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An attempt was made to derive new generation of cold targets for cold target recoil oil momentum spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) experiments. The ultracold targets were obtained by laser cooling and trapping in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Impact parameter sensitive information about multielectron capture processes was obtained.

Universal Negative Poisson Ratio Of Self Avoiding Fixed Connectivity Membranes, Mark Bowick, Angelo Cacciuto, G. Thorleifsson, A. Travesset Sep 2001

Universal Negative Poisson Ratio Of Self Avoiding Fixed Connectivity Membranes, Mark Bowick, Angelo Cacciuto, G. Thorleifsson, A. Travesset

Physics - All Scholarship

We determine the Poisson ratio of self-avoiding fixed-connectivity membranes, modeled as impenetrable plaquettes, to be sigma=-0.37(6), in statistical agreement with the Poisson ratio of phantom fixed-connectivity membranes sigma=-0.32(4). Together with the equality of critical exponents, this result implies a unique universality class for fixed-connectivity membranes. Our findings thus establish that physical fixed-connectivity membranes provide a wide class of auxetic (negative Poisson ratio) materials with significant potential applications in materials science.

Ocean Circulation Influences On Sea Surface Temperature In The Equatorial Central Pacific, Chunzai Wang, Robert H. Weisberg Sep 2001

Ocean Circulation Influences On Sea Surface Temperature In The Equatorial Central Pacific, Chunzai Wang, Robert H. Weisberg

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Velocity data from an array of acoustic Doppler current profilers moored about 0°, 140°W from May 1990 through June 1991 during the Tropical Instability Wave Experiment are used in conjunction with Tropical Atmosphere‐Ocean array data and a blended sea surface temperature (SST) product to study the processes that control SST variations. The horizontal velocity data allow us to calculate the vertical velocity component by vertically integrating the continuity equation. Given the three‐dimensional temperature flux divergence, we examine the role of the ocean circulation in SST. Upwelling and downwelling are found to be associated with cooling and warming, respectively, suggesting that …

The Effect Of Low Levels Of Zirconia Addition On The Mechanical Properties Of Hydroxyapatite, Mark R. Towler, I. R. Gibson Sep 2001

The Effect Of Low Levels Of Zirconia Addition On The Mechanical Properties Of Hydroxyapatite, Mark R. Towler, I. R. Gibson

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of low levels of zirconia addition on the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite was analyzed. Optimum amount of zirconia required to prevent decomposition of hydroxyapatite during sintering was determined. The particle size, morphology and surface area were measured and calcium to phosphorus ratio and trace element impurity content were determined by x-ray fluorescence. Low level addition of zirconia resulted in composites with better mechanical properties and minimum levels of decomposition.

Predicting Variations In Mathematics Performance In Four Countries Using Timss, Daniel Koretz, Daniel Mccaffrey, Thomas Sullivan

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

... This study used data from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) to compare the variability of performance in the U.S., Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan; investigate how this performance variation is distributed within and between classrooms; and explore how well background variables predict performance at both levels. ...
