2001 Presidential Address: Do More With More, Dawn O. Braithwaite Oct 2001

2001 Presidential Address: Do More With More, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

As I have listened to, and recently reread the addresses of our WSCA Presidents, I have been moved and challenged by their words and their wisdom. And their speeches are challenging. They have exhorted us to embrace quality discourse, to welcome change, to maintain the centrality of communication in the university of the 21st century, and to avoid becoming out-of-touch whiners. I wondered, what can I add to their words in my own address?

Over this past year, I have thought about my life as a communication professor. How are my times similar and different from those who have come …

Incarnational Spiritual Influences: Baptismal Covenant & The Life Styles / Stages Of Elizabeth Seton, Frances Ryan D.C. Oct 2001

Incarnational Spiritual Influences: Baptismal Covenant & The Life Styles / Stages Of Elizabeth Seton, Frances Ryan D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Elizabeth fulfilled many roles during her life: daughter and stepchild, wife, widow, convert, mother, and foundress. To each she brought her understanding of her baptismal covenant with God. This article explores each of Elizabeth’s roles, and how the combination of relationships and events led her to see God in others and understand God’s will for her life. This understanding of God that develops through life stages and events is a hallmark of Incarnational Spirituality. The culture that Elizabeth was born into, Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s influence on her ideas about education, and early life in the community of the Sisters of Charity …

The Empire Of The Lone Mother: Parental Rights, Child Welfare Law, And State Restructuring, Hester Lessard Oct 2001

The Empire Of The Lone Mother: Parental Rights, Child Welfare Law, And State Restructuring, Hester Lessard

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article uses the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in G.(J.) v. New Brunswick to frame a discussion of the historical and ideological character of Canadian child welfare regimes on the nature and experience of women’s citizenship within the liberal political order and, in particular, within the current neo-liberal restructuring of welfare provision. The article also analyzes traditional understandings of the political character of child welfare in terms of state intervention and non-intervention, by placing the state ordering of parent-child relations in the context of larger issues of colonialism, gendered parenting discourses, and the linkage between child neglect and poverty. …

Banks and financial institutions in Hong Kong are increasingly finding themselves facing rapid increases in turbulence and complexity, leading to greater uncertainty and increased competition. Customers are also becoming more demanding. Apart from the traditional type of banking services, customers today require more personalized products and services, and access to such services at any time, and at any place. Although there is no panacea for banks to stay competitive, Internet Banking is one of the advanced information technologies they can employ to achieve a high level of customer services.

Internet Banking is an emerging technology that permits conduct of banking …

Many Voices, One Umma: Sociopolitical Debate In The Muslim Community, James A. Toronto Oct 2001

Many Voices, One Umma: Sociopolitical Debate In The Muslim Community, James A. Toronto

BYU Studies

As a religion expands beyond its original setting, it encounters new historical, economic, social, and geopolitical forces. The resulting clash between sacred truth and secular reality created ideological tensions within a religious community that lead its followers to engage in a process of dialogue, reform, and reconciliation. This process of dialectical exchange occurs both between members of the community and between the community and outside forces. Often it gives rise to traumatic, even violent, conflict and frequently leads to schisms and the establishment of break-away religious movements. The history of religion provides abundant evidence that the ability of a nascent …

Al-Ghazali, A Muslim Seeker Of Truth, Brian M. Hauglid Oct 2001

Al-Ghazali, A Muslim Seeker Of Truth, Brian M. Hauglid

BYU Studies

In conjunction with some noted Islamicists and under the leadership of Daniel C. Peterson, associate professor of Asian and Near Eastern Languages at BYU, several significant Islamic texts are being or will be translated into English and published in order to make these texts available to the West. The first published volume of the Islamic Translation Series: Philosophy, Theology, and Mysticism is The Incoherence of the Philosophers (Tahafut al-Falasifa), written by al-Ghazali (d. 1111). It seems fitting to begin such a series with a work by al-Ghazali, as he holds an esteemed place in the Islamic world. However, Latter-day …

Overhauling The Wto: Opportunity At Doha And Beyond, John Audley, Ann Florini Oct 2001

Overhauling The Wto: Opportunity At Doha And Beyond, John Audley, Ann Florini

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The world's trade ministers, who will meet at a WTOministerial in November 2001 in Doha, Qatar, are wrong to think that only a newround of negotiations will save the much-maligned international trade system.Carnegie senior associates John Audley and Ann M. Florini argue that theyshould, instead, simultaneously tackle internal and external reform of the WTOto make it a truly equitable institution. Internally, industrial countries muststart treating developing countries as equal partners in making the rules thatgovern global trade, and where necessary provide technical assistance to makethat equality possible. Externally, to satisfy legitimate public demands, members should improve the transparency of WTO proceedings …

Analysis Of Future Economic Opportunities For Branson, Missouri, Harrison Price Company Oct 2001

Analysis Of Future Economic Opportunities For Branson, Missouri, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

The Branson/Lakes area, and the City of Branson in particular, experienced rapid growth in the early 1990s, driven largely by creation of music shows in an increasing number of new theaters. The growth of music shows slowed in the latter part of the decade and some theaters are now dark. Recognizing the change, the Board of Directors of the Branson Regional Economic Development Association (BREDA), which represents the diverse business and civic interests of the area, established an Entertainment Product Advisory Council (EPAC) consisting of representatives of business, entertainment and government to review the current situation and make recommendations for …

Beliefs Of Science Teachers Toward The Teaching Of Science/Technological/Social Issues: Are We Addressing National Standards?, Jon E. Pedersen, Samuel Totten Oct 2001

Beliefs Of Science Teachers Toward The Teaching Of Science/Technological/Social Issues: Are We Addressing National Standards?, Jon E. Pedersen, Samuel Totten

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

As science educators, we must view the changing nature of society brought on by technology and the global nature of society as an impetus to reexamine the nature of science instruction. We have been bestowed with the responsibility to educate students on a variety of topics that less than two decades ago did not exist. Many of these social issues are controversial in nature and are directly linked to the local, regional, national, and global communities in which we exist. However, including these social issues in the extant curriculum of science has, at best, been limited. This is true even …

Business Lawyer, Woman Warrior: An Allegory Of Feminine And Masculine Theories, Barbara Ann White Oct 2001

Business Lawyer, Woman Warrior: An Allegory Of Feminine And Masculine Theories, Barbara Ann White

All Faculty Scholarship

The first part of this essay is a discourse on how two of the last half century’s most influential contributions to legal thinking: Law and Economics Jurisprudence and Feminist Legal Theory, whose adherents are normally adversaries, can function synergistically to create a greater analytic power. Using business law issues as an example - historically law and economics’ terrain but recently explored by feminism - I comment on how each can unravel different knots but each standing alone leave other conundrums unresolved.

Expanding on the feminist concept of “masculine thinking,” I discuss how, just as law and economics’ analytic style (i.e., …

The Influence Of Ramayana On The Vaishnava Hymns, R. Seeta Lechumi Ratha Krishnan

The aim of this study is to identify and assess the influences of the Ramayanas on the hymns of the Tamil Vaishnava saints called alvars. The hymns of each alvar is examined separately and the Ramayana incidents are then collectively scrutinised to assess the treatment of these incidents by the alvars. They are also compared with similar events in the Ramayanas of VaImiki and Kampar. Research for the study is based on the library method and for the collection of relevant material, the documentation method is used. The facts thus collected are analysed according to the synthesis method and then …
