"Through the investigation of the filmic narrative and the semantics of the visual style inherent in film noir, I intend to establish a precedent that can be used to construct an architectural product in Newark that serves to investigate the city's past, present, and anticipate the future."

A Critique Of Markedness-Based Theories In Phonology, Naomi Gurevich Oct 2001

A Critique Of Markedness-Based Theories In Phonology, Naomi Gurevich

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

The notion of markedness has been prevalent in phonology since its use by one of the founders of the Prague school of phonology, Trubetzkoy (1939). In contemporary writing it is most often used as a measure of the relative naturalness of linguistic elements. In this paper I explore the use of markedness in phonology literature and argue that it is an ill-defined notion that relies on circular reasoning and, quite often, leads to conflicting or vacuous predictions. Specifically, I question the generative theory-internal notion that markedness is encoded in the grammar. I focus on the multi-dimensional aspect of markedness in …

The School Board President’S Perception Of The District Superintendent: Applying The Lenses Of Social Influence And Social Style, George J. Petersen, Paula M. Short Oct 2001

The School Board President’S Perception Of The District Superintendent: Applying The Lenses Of Social Influence And Social Style, George J. Petersen, Paula M. Short

Graduate Studies in Education

This exploratory study used components found in social influence theory and social style to examine the school board president’s perceptions of the district superintendent’s ability to influence the construction of the board agenda and voting decisions made by school boards in 131 randomly chosen school districts. Social influence theory and social style suggest that credibility, social attractiveness, assertiveness, and emotiveness are effective and compelling elements of influence. Results from this study suggest that favorable board decision making for superintendent-recommended action items is closely related to the superintendent’s trustworthiness (perceived use of skills and knowledge for the good of the district), …

The Motivational Basis Of Concessions And Compromise: Archival And Laboratory Studies, Carrie A. Langner, David G. Winter Oct 2001

The Motivational Basis Of Concessions And Compromise: Archival And Laboratory Studies, Carrie A. Langner, David G. Winter

Psychology and Child Development

A content analysis system for measuring positive concessions (offering concessions) and negative concessions (rejecting offered concessions) was introduced and validated through an archival study of government-to-government documents from 4 crises, 2 of which escalated to war and 2 of which were peacefully resolved. In the archival documents, concession making was positively associated with affiliation motivation and negatively associated with power motivation. A 2nd, laboratory experimental study confirmed these relationships and demonstrated priming effects of motive imagery and concession making, in a received diplomatic letter, on participants' responses. Finally, the motive imagery and concessions scores in participants' responses were related in …

Review Of Diana O'Hara, Courtship And Constraint: Rethinking The Making Of Marriage In Tudor England, And Retha Warnicke, The Marrying Of Anne Of Cleves: Royal Protocol In Tudor England, Carole Levin Oct 2001

Review Of Diana O'Hara, Courtship And Constraint: Rethinking The Making Of Marriage In Tudor England, And Retha Warnicke, The Marrying Of Anne Of Cleves: Royal Protocol In Tudor England, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

There have been a number of books and articles in the last decade that focus on family and marriage, including courtship, in early modern England or on the negotiations of specific marriages. Many of these studies were written in response to the pioneering but often controversial work by Lawrence Stone. Literary scholars, such as Catherine Bates and Ilona Bell, and historians such as Barbara Harris, Sara Mendelson and Patricia Crawford, Eric Carlson, Alan MacFarlane, and Ralph Houlbrooke have brought a variety of view points and much more subtlety to the whole discussion. The two books under review here, Courtship and …

Travels, Explorations And Empires: Writings From The Era Of Imperial Expansion, 1770-1835, Ed. Tim Fulford And Peter J. Kitson, 4 Vols (Pickering & Chatto Publishers, 2001)., James C. Mckusick

English Faculty Publications

A Review by James C. McKusick. Some of the best recent scholarship in our field has been concerned with the political and geographic contexts (and subtexts) of Romantic literature. In particular, several recent books have addressed the relationship between Romanticism as a literary field and the new economic, geographic, and social realities that emerged in consequence of British imperial expansion on a global scale. Two recent collections of essays are exemplary in the scope and sophistication of their approach to these new geopolitical realities: Romanticism, Race, and Imperial Culture (1996), edited by Alan Richardson and Sonia Hofkosh, and Romanticism and …

Nonlegal Regulation Of The Legal Profession: Social Norms In Professional Communities, W. Bradley Wendel Oct 2001

Nonlegal Regulation Of The Legal Profession: Social Norms In Professional Communities, W. Bradley Wendel

Vanderbilt Law Review

In this Article, Professor Wendel analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of community-based responses to unethical behavior by lawyers. The limits of formal legal regulation of the legal profession are well known. Additional questions have been raised about the efficacy of motivating lawyers to act ethically merely by giving appropriate instruction. What is left, therefore, is a complex and little-studied, but very real, array of informal sanctions. These sanctions are controlled by individual members of the professional community, not by the court or organized bar, and therefore operate largely without the transparency and procedural regularity of formal legal regimes. The advantage …
