Contemporary Western Representations Of Jesus In Islam, Harold Chad Hillier
Contemporary Western Representations Of Jesus In Islam, Harold Chad Hillier
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Unknown to many in “Christian” North American society, the person of Jesus is highly revered among the millions of Muslims in the world. This shared reverence for Jesus between Muslims and Christians allows for possible dialogue and greater understanding between adherents of the two religions. Moreover, the renewed interest in scholarship on Jesus, whether historical or theological, allows the Jesus traditions of Islam to become additional sources in this field of scholarship. Given these two reasons, the academic scholar of religion, then, has a motivation to dive into the growing wealth of discussions on the Islamic Jesus in the West. …

The Law Of White Spaces: Race, Culture, And Legal Education, Peter Goodrich, Linda G. Mills

The scene, drawn from memory, is a first-year law school classroom. It is the early 1980s and the class is on civil procedure. The teacher is a white woman. She is nervous, and the class is dominated by students who provide standard right answers to formulaic law school questions. Other points of view, particularly those of a critical or feminist nature, are either passed over quickly or ignored. Questions of color are never mentioned. More than that, the teacher never calls on any African-American students. Students of color are either ignored completely or told, when they have questions, “We are …

Reducing Disciplinary Referrals And Academic Failure Rate Of Seventh- And Eighth-Grade Students, Melad Smith Jr.
Reducing Disciplinary Referrals And Academic Failure Rate Of Seventh- And Eighth-Grade Students, Melad Smith Jr.
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum addressed the excessive disciplinary referrals and the academic failure rate of 7th- and 8th-grade students of Charlton County High School in Folkston, Georgia. The data collected during the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 school years served as the basis of this practicum. During the 1998-1999 school year, the 7th and 8th grades accounted for 46. 9% of all high school referrals, and an alarming 23. 5% of total students in 7th and 8th grade failed academic courses in social studies, math, science, and English. During the 1999-2000 school year, a preliminary investigation was implemented to curtail the academic and discipline …

A Special Remedial Program To Improve The Skills Of Failing Eighth-Grade Students, John J. O'Malley Jr.
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes an afterschool remedial program during the 2000-2001 school year at Forest Grove Middle School in Worcester, Massachusetts. The remedial program was an effort to improve the skills of 8th-grade students who fall short of the state norms on the mandatory 8th-grade Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Test (MCAS; Massachusetts Department of Education, 1999). An analysis of the 1999 test indicated that 480 8th-grade students in a 905-pupil enrollment at the school fell short of the passing grade, 51% in the mathematics section and 21% in the language arts section.
Planned solution strategies included (a) an afterschool and vacation remedial …
Development Of An American Indian Studies Program For The Tohono O’Odham Community College, Byron Lee Blackwell
Development Of An American Indian Studies Program For The Tohono O’Odham Community College, Byron Lee Blackwell
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Tohono O'odham Community College opened a tribal Indian college in the fall 2000 semester. The Tohono O'odham Reservation was previously referred to as the Papago Reservation; the name was changed in 1986. The problem was that there was no curriculum in American Indian Studies at the college. In the past the Papagos always had to leave the reservation if they wanted to pursue higher education in American Indian studies.
The purpose of the applied dissertation was to develop a product. The purpose of the applied dissertation project was to design an American Indian Studies Program for the tribal college …

Reflections On Evaluating Online Learning And Teaching, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
In this chapter, I will discuss my decade of evaluation activities relating to online learning experiences, with a focus on methods. These online experiences range from setting up online networks for social interaction, facilitating collaborative learning experiences among graduate students in several universities, moderating worldwide online professional development activities, and teaching entirely online. Most of my online experiences relate to my role as a professor at the University of New Mexico where I teach graduate level courses in distance education and educational telecommunications. In this respect, I would like to acknowledge the valuable lessons I have learned from many students …
Library Budgets And Academic Library Rankings In Times Of Transition., Johann Van Reenen
Library Budgets And Academic Library Rankings In Times Of Transition., Johann Van Reenen
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
An analysis of the ability of a particular library to significantly increase its Association of Research Libraries (ARL) ranking in a reasonable time period is presented. A discussion follows to show why this is not a useful objective at a time when academic libraries are transitioning to new types of products and services made possible by emerging technologies. There are various initiatives underway in the United States and Europe to create more meaningful performance measures for academic libraries.
Databases And Portals For Knowledge Management, Soraya Abad-Mota
Databases And Portals For Knowledge Management, Soraya Abad-Mota
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
The current availability, quantity and variability of Information Technology (IT) is overwhelming. Internet and the powerful set of tools loosely called "the web" dramatically changed the way people use this technology. We can take advantage of these new ways to try to capture an organization\'s knowledge and manage it effectively. Two key elements of IT that serve this purpose are databases and portals. In this chapter we explore the database and portal technologies, their interaction, and their potential for knowledge management. We also discuss briefly how databases and portals provide a good development opportunity for Latin America.

This chapter discusses the integration of digital libraries and Web based distance education systems. It shows how useful this integration can be in terms of storing, searching, sharing, maintaining and using courseware due to the consolidated library practices of managing information. Some technical aspects on the identification of the Learning Objects (LO's) are addressed as well as the basic functions of the system. Results of such an implementation are presented.

A multi-institutional collaborative project is described. The aim of the project is to improve access to information on Latin American Social Medicine. The use of the Internet to improve access rather than continue to create barriers to access will be explored. The utility of a digital library of structured abstracts in such initiatives will be demonstrated.
A Dynamic Programming-Based Approach To Microarray Image Comparison And Registration, Sunil Bosco Rodrigues
A Dynamic Programming-Based Approach To Microarray Image Comparison And Registration, Sunil Bosco Rodrigues
Masters Theses
"Microarray technology is increasingly used as a means of high throughput analysis of human, non-human and plant genomes. Manual methods of array production have inherent imperfections and variations of the quality of output data derived from these arrays. A dynamic programming-based approach is presented to validate the quality of such data prior to insertion into evolving databases in order to assign reliably, genetic aberrations to bio-medical functions. Dynamic programming is used for comparing normal and tumor microarray image pairs and a cost function is developed which gives a value representing the difference between the images. Quality of the image pairs …
