Digital Libraries And Virtual Workplaces: Important Initiatives For Latin America In The Information Age, Johann Van Reenen

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In a world becoming increasingly connected electronically the divide between people working in different at different levels, in different departments, organizations, and countries are melting away. It is becoming easier to "cross" political, economic and national borders. However, to participate in this global workplace, workers will need: local information and technological infrastructures access to global connectivity at reasonable speed and reliability the skills required to work digitally the attitudes needed to work in an increasingly ambiguous, paradoxical, and complex work environment access to pertinent and affordable information appropriate management structures to support virtual work and, most importantly, leaders with vision …

Statistical-Learning Control Of Multiple-Delay Systems With Application To Atm Networks, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Marco Ariola, Vladimir Koltchinskii

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Congestion control in the ABR class of ATM network presents interesting challenges due to the presence of multiple uncertain delays. Recently, probabilistic methods and statistical learning theory have been shown to provide approximate solutions to challenging control problems. In this paper, using some recent results by the authors, an efficient statistical algorithm is used to design a robust, fixed-structure, controller for a high-speed communication network with multiple uncertain propagation delays.

Time Delay And Power Control In Spread Spectrum Wireless Networks, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Aly El-Osery, Mo Jamshidi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Delay in the computation of the signal-to-interference ratio in communication systems is unavoidable. In the case of mobile communication, delay is a very critical problem due the fast variation of the communication channel and the need for effective, fast and accurate power control. In this paper we present our approach to dealing with the delay in mobile communication systems as well as our controller to achieve and maintain the desired signal quality. We will concentrate on the code division multiple access (CDMA) systems.

Cleaning Up The Tracks: Superfund Meets Rails-To-Trails, Clifford J. Villa Jan 2001

Cleaning Up The Tracks: Superfund Meets Rails-To-Trails, Clifford J. Villa

Faculty Scholarship

For more than one hundred years, railroad cars rumbled and roared along tracks in the Coeur d'Alene River Basin, serving the mining industry in the Panhandle of northern Idaho. As in many parts of the American West, the history of railroads in northern Idaho largely reflects the history of mining in the region. The first gold was discovered in this area in 1883, the same year that the area saw its first line of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1885, the Bunker Hill mine was established near the present town of Kellogg. Four years later, the first rail line of …

The Uniform Mediation Act: To The Spoiled Go The Privileges, Scott H. Hughes Jan 2001

The Uniform Mediation Act: To The Spoiled Go The Privileges, Scott H. Hughes

Faculty Scholarship

The Uniform Mediation Act, as currently written and approved by NCCUSL, may unnecessarily cause the destruction of self-determination in many cases. The provisions demonstrate favoritism for mediators and may result in damage to the integrity of the process. Further, the nature of the provisions restricting the parties access to the exceptions to the privilege may both increase the number of lawsuits against mediators and also encourage wrongful behavior on the part of disputants. None of this will ultimately inure to the benefit of mediation as an institution. If it is necessary to have a privilege for mediation, certain elements should …

Writing In The Mainstream And Against The Current : Loaded By Christos Tsiolkas, A. R. Hughes Jan 2001

Writing In The Mainstream And Against The Current : Loaded By Christos Tsiolkas, A. R. Hughes

Theses : Honours

The aim of this thesis is to highlight the significance of Christos Tsiolkas's first novel, Loaded (1995), as a Grunge text within the milieu of Australian literature. Grunge is a problematic genre in that it is difficult to define and is surrounded by major contradictions relating to its production and reception. Tsiolkas maintains that Grunge seeks to represent the contemporary local experience of living in Australia and the journey of Loaded's protagonist, Ari, reflects this by representing the nuances of contemporary Australian society on the margins. This representation seeks to undermine the 'homogeneous picture of what it means to be …

Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan Jan 2001

Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan

Theses : Honours

Artificial wetlands are becoming an ever more visible feature of the landscape of Perth and the Swan Coastal Plain. They are appearing in the centre of new suburbs and also in the remediation of stormwater systems. Crucially wetlands have been a denigrated and abused part of the landscape. Imported landscape aesthetics have seen the function of wetlands as being an impediment to progress and the development of land. For indigenous Aboriginal peoples of the land, Nyoongar peoples, wetlandspaces (Giblett, I996a) are crucial to their inclusive understanding of 'country'. Intertwined with notions of spirituality, stewardship, and food source among others. With …

The Characters And Dramaturgy Of Tennessee Williams : An Analysis Through The Presentation Of Two One-Act Plays, Lucy Eyre Jan 2001

The Characters And Dramaturgy Of Tennessee Williams : An Analysis Through The Presentation Of Two One-Act Plays, Lucy Eyre

Theses : Honours

An analysis into the background of Tennessee Williams strongly suggests that the two one-act plays, This Property is Condemned and The Lady of Larkspur Lotion are autobiographical accounts, being that the characters arc based either on Williams himself family members or friends, and indeed, the plays arc representations of the era in wh1ch they were written. Also, a simultaneous investigation into the dramaturgy of these plays shows Williams' innovative “use of all the resources of the contemporary stage” (Boxill 23). and the rehearsal process and workshop presentation was an exploration and discovery into how these resources can be implemented …

Proceedings Of The First International Conference On Neutrosophy, Neutrosophic Logic, Neutrosophic Set, Neutrosophic Probability And Statistics, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In 1960s Abraham Robinson has developed the non-standard analysis, a formalization of analysis and a branch of mathematical logic, that rigorously defines the infinitesimals. Informally, an infinitesimal is an infinitely small number. Formally, x is said to be infinitesimal if and only if for all positive integers n one has xxx < 1/n. Let &>0 be a such infinitesimal number. The hyper-real number set is an extension of the real number set, which includes classes of infinite numbers and classes of infinitesimal numbers. Let’s consider the non-standard finite numbers 1+ = 1+&, where “1” is its standard part and “&” its non-standard part, …

The Government As Fiduciary: A Practical Demonstration From The Reign Of Trajan, Robert G. Natelson

University of Richmond Law Review

The Roman Emperor Trajan is justly celebrated as an author of several modern civil rights, such as the right to confront one's accusers. But he is most aptly remembered as the ruler who proved that fiduciary government was possible. Following the example of Trajan's reign could improve greatly the standards of American public law.

Perceptions Of Nonconforming Sexualities And Genders On Television Talk Shows, Violeta Oliver Jan 2001

Perceptions Of Nonconforming Sexualities And Genders On Television Talk Shows, Violeta Oliver

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer/Questioning) people often appear as guests on daytime television talk shows. Using cultivation analysis, the author explored television talk show viewers' perceived realism of television talk shows and GLBTQ people. This quantitative study tested seven hypotheses. Support was found for the first two hypotheses, indicating that heavy viewers of television talk shows perceived television talk shows to be more realistic or true to life than light viewers. Support was not found for the other hypotheses. There was no significance difference between heavy and light viewers of television talk shows and their perception of the GLBTQ …

The Effect Of Anaerobic Exercise On The Thermic Effect Of Food, Charlene Marie Denzer Jan 2001

The Effect Of Anaerobic Exercise On The Thermic Effect Of Food, Charlene Marie Denzer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The thermic effect of food (TEF) is the increment in energy expenditure above resting metabolic rate associated with the cost of absorption, metabolism, and storage of food. Previous studies have shown that TEF is enhanced by aerobic exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine if a similar effect occurs with anaerobic exercise (weight lifting). VO2 was measured after ingestion of a 660 kcal meal with and without prior completion of a weight-training regimen. TEF was 42% higher after the exercise trial (t = 2.539, p < .017), compared with the control trial. These results indicate that prior anaerobic exercise also leads to an enhanced TEF.

Modeling Of Hand-Arm-Glove Vibration System And Testing And Evaluating Of Antivibration Gloves, Jianying Cui Jan 2001

Modeling Of Hand-Arm-Glove Vibration System And Testing And Evaluating Of Antivibration Gloves, Jianying Cui

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Work-related hand-arm disorders (HAVS) caused by exposure to vibration while operating vibrational tools were discussed; no clear dose-effect relationship between vibration exposure and HAVS was found yet. Ways to avoid or delay harmful impact on workers were explored, one means of which is using antivibration gloves during operation. Four types of antivibration gloves were tested per standard ISO 10819, test setup and procedures were presented. Two models of hand-arm-glove system were developed and analyzed; the models were used for predicting the gloves' transmissibility before carrying out actual tests. Model fit was done for the two models to the actual tested …

Characterization Of 2-Methyl-8-Quinolinolato Gallium (Iii) Chelates, Sanjini Ushika Nanayakkara Jan 2001

Characterization Of 2-Methyl-8-Quinolinolato Gallium (Iii) Chelates, Sanjini Ushika Nanayakkara

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We present a detailed photophysical (absorption and emission), thermal and X-ray absorption (NEXAFS) study of gallium (III) bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinolato) carboxylate (2Meq2GaOR) chelates, where OR = acetato (OAc), trifluoroacetato (OTF) and dimethylpropianato (ODMP). These materials are compared with aluminum (III) tris(8-quinolinolato) (Alq3) chelates. We show that regardless of changing the carboxylato ligand the 2Meq2 GaOR chelates have similar unoccupied (LUMO) states. This implies that charge injection should be constant in these materials when used as emitter materials in organic light emitting devices. We also present the first detailed evaluation in to the mer/fac isomerization of gallium (III) tris(2-methyl-8-quinolinolato) (2Meq3Ga) chelate in both …
