Elements And Principles: Experiencing Design Principles Through Interactivity, Niramon Wongsirisup Nov 2001

Elements And Principles: Experiencing Design Principles Through Interactivity, Niramon Wongsirisup

Theses

A designer is a practical person who confronts visual assignments with a process of visual creation. The creative process is used to solve practical problems that occur in any design assignment. However, before one is ready to solve any problem, one must understand the depth and range of their design language. If one's understanding of design is limited, then the range of possible solutions to a problem will be limited. My thesis aims to broaden and enrich a vocabulary of design through the study of its essential elements and principles. If we familiarize ourselves with a multitude of books, we …

Law As Craft, Brett G. Scharffs Nov 2001

Law As Craft, Brett G. Scharffs

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article explores the similarities between the law and other craft traditions, such as carpentry, pottery, and quilting. Its thesis is that law--and in particular adjudiction---combine elements of what Aristotle described as practical wisdom, or phronesis, and craft, or techne. Craft knowledge is learned practically through experience and demonstrated through practice, and is contrasted with other concepts, including art, science, mass production, craftiness, and hobby. Crafts are characterized by four simutaneous identities. First, crafts are made by hand-one at a time-and require not only talent and skill, but also experience and what Karl Llewellyn called "situation sense." Second, crafts are …

The Competency Conundrum: Problems Courts Have Faced In Applying Different Standards For Competency To Be Executed, John L. Farringer, Iv Nov 2001

The Competency Conundrum: Problems Courts Have Faced In Applying Different Standards For Competency To Be Executed, John L. Farringer, Iv

Vanderbilt Law Review

Throughout Anglo-American legal history, there has been a general agreement, based on numerous rationales, that mentally incompetent inmates should not be executed for their crimes. The recurring problem, however, is how to define "incompetence" or "insanity." Legislatures and courts have sought to provide a common- sense definition, but in practice judges must confront highly technical terminology from the ever evolving field of psychiatry. Additionally, the definition must be flexible enough to apply to a variety of cases, while being universal enough to assure that all defendants are treated fairly and equally.

At hearings to determine a prisoner's competency to be …

The Gatun Structure: A Geological Assessment Of A Newly Recognized Impact Structure Near Lake Gatun In The Republic De Panama, Livio Leonardo Tornabene

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Gatun Structure (N 09º 05’ 58.1”, W 79º 47’ 21.8”, situated in the triple-canopy rainforest 10 km to the WSW of the Gamboa and about 2 km south of the Isle of Barbacoas, Republic de Panama), is a partially inundated, quasi-concentric surface feature ~3km in diameter, which appears in aerial photographs and in radar imagery as an arcuate chain of islands with a raised center. Although the structure has been heavily weathered and altered, it has retained morphology consistent with complex craters: an elevated circular central uplift 500-600 m in diameter and approximately 70 m high, and arcuate boundary …

Factors Leading To Giving By Known Catholic Donors, Katherine A. King Nov 2001

Factors Leading To Giving By Known Catholic Donors, Katherine A. King

Master's Theses

The much-publicized low-level giving of Catholic donors versus other denominations has been the source of much debate and a rich topic for many research studies and reports, especially within the last 10 years. The major focus of this current study was to show that Catholics are indeed generous and to seek factors that lead to their giving. The positive aspects of Catholic generosity were sought, rather than focusing on negative factors serving as barriers to giving.

A self-administered questionnaire was sent to 208 known Catholic donors of the Diocese of Oakland in California during its Annual Bishop's Appeal. Donors who …

Three-Body Coulomb Problem Probed By Mapping The Bethe Surface In Ionizing Ion-Atom Collisions, Robert Moshammer, Appathurai N. Perumal, Michael Schulz, V. D. Rodriguez, Holger Kollmus, Rido Mann, Siegbert Hagmann, Joachim Hermann Ullrich Nov 2001

Three-Body Coulomb Problem Probed By Mapping The Bethe Surface In Ionizing Ion-Atom Collisions, Robert Moshammer, Appathurai N. Perumal, Michael Schulz, V. D. Rodriguez, Holger Kollmus, Rido Mann, Siegbert Hagmann, Joachim Hermann Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The three-body Coulomb problem has been explored in kinematically complete experiments on single ionization of helium by 100 MeV / u C 6 + and 3.6 MeV / u u 5 3 + impact. Low-energy electron emission (E e < 150 eV ) as a function of the projectile deflection ϑ p (momentum transfer), i.e., the Bethe surface [[15]], has been mapped with Δ ϑ p ± 25 nanoradian resolution at extremely large perturbations (3.6 MeV / uAu53+ ) where single ionization occurs at impact parameters of typically 10 times the He K -shell radius. The experimental data are not in agreement with state-of-the-art continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state theory.

Size-Induced Lattice Relaxation In Ceo₂ Nanoparticles, X.-D. Zhou, Wayne Huebner Nov 2001

Size-Induced Lattice Relaxation In Ceo₂ Nanoparticles, X.-D. Zhou, Wayne Huebner

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Size-induced lattice relaxation was observed for nanoscale CeO2 single crystals with an average size from 4 to 60 nm. Results showed the finest crystallites exhibited no strain-induced line broadening, while high temperature annealing resulted in larger grain sizes and significant strains. The observed shift in the x-ray diffraction lattice parameters was assumed to be due to the formation of defects on the lattice, specifically oxygen vacancies. Modeling revealed that the oxygen vacancy concentration ([V••O]) was found to be ≈4 x 1020/cm3 for the 4 nm crystallites, and decreased two orders of magnitude for …

Persistence In Style-Adjusted Mutual Fund Returns, Melvyn Teo, Sung-Jun Woo Nov 2001

Persistence In Style-Adjusted Mutual Fund Returns, Melvyn Teo, Sung-Jun Woo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The literature on mutual fund persistence took a hit with the finding that one-year stock momentum and expense ratios account for most of the persistence in mutual fund performance (Carhart, 1992; Carhart, 1997). However, since equity mutual funds are grouped into styles (e.g., large value, small growth, mid-cap growth, etc.) and are often confined to trading stocks within their style, one should measure fund performance relative to style when investigating managerial ability. Using CRSP mutual fund data and a methodology similar to Carhart (1997), we find that differences in style-adjusted fund returns persist for up to six years. Neither one-year …

Foskett V. Mckeown – Hard-Nosed Property Rights Or Unjust Enrichment?, Hang Wu Tang Nov 2001

Foskett V. Mckeown – Hard-Nosed Property Rights Or Unjust Enrichment?, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The recent judgment of the House of Lords in Foskett is extremely important as it straddles insurance law, property law, tracing and unjust enrichment. First, it establishes the proposition that it is possible to trace misappropriated moneys wrongfully paid as premiums into the proceeds of a policy. Second, two of the Law Lords contemplated the abolition of the distinction between the rules for tracing in law and tracing in equity. Third, the judgments of the Law Lords contain valuable guidance as to the context in which equitable ownership and the law of unjust enrichment should be viewed.

Stacked Subwavelength Gratings As Circular Polarization Filters, Gregory P. Nordin, P. C. Deguzman Nov 2001

Stacked Subwavelength Gratings As Circular Polarization Filters, Gregory P. Nordin, P. C. Deguzman

Faculty Publications

We have stacked subwavelength gratings (SWGs) on a single substrate to create a compact, integrated circular polarization filter. The SWGs consist of a wire grid polarizer and a broadband form-birefringent quarter-wave plate (QWP). Rigorous coupled-wave analysis was used to design the QWP for operation over the 3.5-5.0 m wavelength range. The fabricated silicon broadband QWP exhibited a phase retardance of 82-97° across this wavelength range. Two stacked structures are presented, each with a different wire grid polarizer fabricated on an organic planarization layer (SU-8) that is deposited on a QWP grating. Transmittance measurements of the first structure when illuminated with …

Using Ssm Proxies To Provide Efficient Multiple-Source Multicast Delivery, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri Nov 2001

Using Ssm Proxies To Provide Efficient Multiple-Source Multicast Delivery, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri

Faculty Publications

We consider the possibility that single-source multicast (SSM) will become a universal multicast service, enabling large-scale distribution of content from a few well-known sources to a general audience. Operating under this assumption, we explore the problem of building the traditional IP model of any-source multicast on top of SSM. Toward this end, we design an SSM proxy service that allows any sender to efficiently deliver content to a multicast group. We demonstrate the performance improvements this service offers over standard SSM and describe extensions for access control, dynamic proxy discovery, and multicast proxy distribution.

A team of administrators, faculty and students share and critique real life situations for analysis. The goal is to use a case study approach to discuss six issues critical in creating effective responses to incidents.

Turning Tables: Recovering The African American Resistance Tradition At Predominantly White Institutions Of Learning, Jean Daniels Ph.D. Oct 2001

Turning Tables: Recovering The African American Resistance Tradition At Predominantly White Institutions Of Learning, Jean Daniels Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

How does race and gender connect to the issue of "authority" in the university classroom? In this session, there will be an exploration of how the subject" authority" in the classroom is linked to white students and their knowledge history. For most white students, the sight of an African American female at the head of a university classroom is an unfamiliar sight. Yet, for the black female professor, the classroom is becoming the "home" of African American resistance to oppression and injustice.

Crossing Boundaries To Engage In Difficult Dialogues, Gertrude Edem, Joseph L. Mbele Oct 2001

Crossing Boundaries To Engage In Difficult Dialogues, Gertrude Edem, Joseph L. Mbele

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

We are two African scholars, from Nigeria and Tanzania, who have extensive experience in Canada and the United States. Issues such as race and color, which are so central to the lives of people in North America do not seem to matter to us as much. This often creates misunderstandings between us as Africans and the people of North America. In the United States, for example, we Africans find ourselves in a situation where there are categories ready made, such as "people of color" and we wonder whether those categories are supposed to apply to us. We wonder whether the …
