Diverse Realities: Understanding Sexually Transmitted Infections And Hiv In India, Sarah Hawkes, K.G. Santhya

Reproductive Health

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, currently have high salience on the health care agendas of many countries, including India. Strategies for their control are ideally based on a number of well-recognised principles. These include: assessments of the burden of disease; the availability of interventions at policy and programme levels, to influence behaviour change and technical ‘solutions’; and the calculated cost-effectiveness of these interventions. In the case of India, data to inform these principles are often lacking in the case of STI control. In this paper we have reviewed the evidence base for STI control in the Indian context. The …

Projecting Chromatic Aberrations, David L. Gibbs Jr., Phil Ryan, Jay S. Huebner

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The chromatic aberration of lenses is a popular topic in introductory astronomy 1-4 and physics and is readily demonstrated on an optical bench to several students at a time. However, we are not aware of any published descriptions of demonstrations showing chromatic aberration that are useful for large lecture classes. This note describes a simple method of using an overhead projector and an extra lens for displaying chromatic aberrations in large lecture halls so it can be viewed by large audiences.

Predictors Of Patient Reported Medication Adherence To Antiretroviral Therapy, Zlata Cerimagic Jan 2001

Predictors Of Patient Reported Medication Adherence To Antiretroviral Therapy, Zlata Cerimagic

Open Access Master's Theses

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is still a significant public health problem. In the United States approximately 1,000,000 people live with HIV/AIDS infection.4The recommended treatment is HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy). The HAART treatment is very complex, because of a large number of prescribed drugs in a regimen, frequent dosing and also a number of side effects. In HIV management precise adherence13,26 to the prescribed medication regimen is the key for the maximal viral suppression and improved health status, and the only way to turn this deadly disease into a manageable chronic disease. …

The Original Meaning Of The Commerce Clause, Randy E. Barnett Jan 2001

The Original Meaning Of The Commerce Clause, Randy E. Barnett

University of Chicago Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court, in recent cases, has attempted to define limits on the Congress's power to regulate commerce among the several states. While Justice Thomas has maintained that the original meaning of "commerce" was limited to the "trade and exchange" of goods and transportation for this purpose, some have argued that he is mistaken and that "commerce" originally included any "gainful activity." Having examined every appearance of the word "commerce" in the records of the Constitutional Convention, the ratification debates, and the Federalist Papers, Professor Barnett finds no surviving example of this term being used in this broader sense. …

The Effects Of A High-Risk Environment On The Sexual Victimization Of Homeless And Runaway Youth, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Ana Mari Cauce Jan 2001

The Effects Of A High-Risk Environment On The Sexual Victimization Of Homeless And Runaway Youth, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Ana Mari Cauce

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Based on the structural-choice theory of victimization, the current study examines the effects of a high-risk environment on the sexual victimization of 311 homeless and runaway youth. Results from logistic regression revealed that survival sex, gender, and physical appearance were significantly associated with sexual victimization. Results from a series of interactions also revealed that the effects of deviant behaviors on sexual victimization varied by gender and age. Although males and females engaged in similar activities, young women were more likely to be victims of sexual assault. These findings suggest that engaging in high-risk behaviors predispose some people to greater risks …
