Women's International Tribunal On Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, Christine M. Chinkin Jan 2001

Women's International Tribunal On Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, Christine M. Chinkin

Articles

From December 8 to 12,2000, a peoples' tribunal, the Women's International War Crimes Tribunal 2000, sat in Tokyo, Japan. It was established to consider the criminal liability of leading high-ranking Japanese military and political officials and the separate responsibility of the state of Japan for rape and sexual slavery as crimes against humanity arising out of Japanese military activity in the Asia Pacific region in the 1930s and 1940s.

The immediate background to the tribunal's establishment was a series of events commencing in 1988 when the women's movement in the Republic of Korea began to learn of the research of …

Free-Standing Due Process And Criminal Procedure: The Supreme Court's Search For Interpretive Guidelines, Jerold H. Israel Jan 2001

Free-Standing Due Process And Criminal Procedure: The Supreme Court's Search For Interpretive Guidelines, Jerold H. Israel

Articles

When I was first introduced to the constitutional regulation of criminal procedure in the mid-1950s, a single issue dominated the field: To what extent did the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment impose upon states the same constitutional restraints that the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Eighth Amendments imposed upon the federal government? While those Bill of Rights provisions, as even then construed, imposed a broad range of constitutional restraints upon the federal criminal justice system, the federal system was (and still is) minuscule as compared to the combined systems of the fifty states. With the Bill of Rights provisions …

Here follow some words from the book which, given our lost sense of security and innocence in light of Pearl Harbor II of Sept. 11, 2001, turns out to have a more pressing relevance than it had when I wrote it a couple of years ago.

Hebrew Law In Biblical Times: An Introduction, Ze'ev W. Falk

Maxwell Institute Publications

This book presents the scholar, historian, lawyer, and general student of the Bible with a highly readable and useful handbook. First published in Jerusalem in 1964, this concise yet knowledgeable treatise remains illuminating. Its skillful organization makes it the most accessible of all introductions to biblical law.

Falk’s research is grounded in historical, sociological, linguistic, and comparative data. His work yields interesting insights about technical legal terminology, vital social information behind the Israelite legal system, and broad perspectives on law among Israel’s neighbors, the Babylonians, Assyrians, and Egyptians.

Alongside its discussions of homicide, torts, property, contracts, slavery, and divorce, this …

Suppletion, Frequency And Lexical Storage., Andrew R. Hippisley Jan 2001

Suppletion, Frequency And Lexical Storage., Andrew R. Hippisley

Linguistics Faculty Publications

Suppletion impacts on theories of the lexicon, language change and language acquisition, and for this reason “is of considerable interest” (Mel’čuk 2000: 511). An observation often made is that there exists a relationship between suppletion and frequency (c.f. Bybee 1995, Greenberg 1996). A lexeme where there is a suppletive relationship between its word-forms usually falls within the group of higher frequency items. Because the relation is with high frequency, suppletion sheds light on the mental lexicon. High frequency words correlate with quick processing speeds, for example lexical decision times, suggesting a memory effect: the more frequently an item is accessed, …

Basic Blue In East Slavonic, Andrew R. Hippisley Jan 2001

Basic Blue In East Slavonic, Andrew R. Hippisley

Linguistics Faculty Publications

Russian’s second BLUE term goluboj ‘light blue’ constitutes a well-known exception to the Berlin and Kay basic color-term typology. If other Slavonic languages do not have a second BLUE term, then the special position of Russian requires explanation; if there is evidence pointing to two basic terms for BLUE, we have a second set of data for investigating the evolution of this unusual color system. The languages genetically closest to Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian, are examined. Findings of the list task, a simple and elegant test for psychological salience of color terms, provide strong evidence that Ukrainian and Belarusian have …

Safety Evaluation Of Right Turns Followed By U-Turns As An Alternative To Direct Left Turns - Conflict Analysis, John Lu, Sunanda Dissanayake, Nelson Castillo, Kristine Williams Jan 2001

Safety Evaluation Of Right Turns Followed By U-Turns As An Alternative To Direct Left Turns - Conflict Analysis, John Lu, Sunanda Dissanayake, Nelson Castillo, Kristine Williams

CUTR Research Reports

This project evaluated the safety and operational impacts of two alternative left-turn treatments from driveways/side streets. The two treatments were (I) direct left turns and (2) right turns followed by U-tums. Safety analyses of the alternatives were conducted using two major approaches: traffic crash data analysis and conflict analysis. Findings related to the traffic conflict analysis are documented in this report. Two other reports document the crash data and operational analyses.

Ten sites were selected for field data collection where each site experienced one or both of the left tum alternatives from the driveway or side street. Video cameras were …

Assessment Of Operational Barriers And Impediments To Transit Use: Transit Information And Scheduling For Major Activity Centers, Jennifer Hardin, Lisa Tucker, Linda Callejas

CUTR Research Reports

The decision to use public transit as a means of alterative transportation is a somewhat complex process. The potential rider must know that a public transportation system is available, how to contact the public transportation system for information on how to use the system for each desired trip, where to go to catch a bus, how to recognize bus stops, which side of the street to stand on to catch a bus going to his destination, how to make transfers, the tare and tare media accepted for each trip, as well as how to read and understand bus system maps …

CUTR Research Reports

The project's focus was to identify the feasibility of and methods toward a Level of Service (LOS) system that can be assessed equally for the motor vehicle, bicycle. pedestrian, and transit modes. Interviews conducted with key stakeholders are used to Identify how LOS measures found they plan on continuing to use LOS measures to assess existing conditions, identify roadways in need of improvement, and prioritize construction projects.
