Residual Properties And Almost Equicontinuity, Ethan Akin, Eli Glasner
Residual Properties And Almost Equicontinuity, Ethan Akin, Eli Glasner
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A property P of a compact dynamical system (X, f) is called a residual property if it is inherited by factors, almost one-to-one lifts and surjective inverse limits. Many transitivity properties are residual. Weak disjointness from all property P systems is a residual property provided P is a residual property stronger than transitivity. Here two systems are weakly disjoint when their product is transitive. Our main result says that for an almost equicontinuous system (X, f) with associated monothetic group Λ, (X, f) is weakly disjoint from all P systems if the only P systems upon which Λ acts are …

Public Sphere In Cyberspace?, Mark D. Johns
Public Sphere In Cyberspace?, Mark D. Johns
Iowa Journal of Communication
According to Jurgen Habermas, a public sphere is a site where individuals come together to freely and openly express their opinions regarding matters of common interest. Informed by Habermas' discussion, the author investigated the social farms generated in computer-mediated communication and examined whether the social structures in cyberspace are conducive to the formation of a public sphere. Communication among the members of three Internet newsgroups were examined to locate the formal features of the social relationships constructed in this cyberspace. The conclusion is that while a public sphere may be possible, cyberspace often falls short of fulfilling its potential for …

Joseph Smith's Cooperstown Bible: The Historical Context Of The Bible Used In The Joseph Smith Translation, Kent P. Jackson
Joseph Smith's Cooperstown Bible: The Historical Context Of The Bible Used In The Joseph Smith Translation, Kent P. Jackson
BYU Studies
In 1828, the H. and E. Phinney Company in Cooperstown, New York, published a quarto-size edition of the King James Bible. This is the version that Joseph Smith, founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, used in his work when he created a new translation of the Bible. Here the author examines Joseph Smith's marked-up copy of the Phinney Bible as an artifact important to Mormonism. Some of Smith's corrections and additions appear in footnotes of the Bible that Mormons use today. The author notes that the Phinney Bible's updated language is more modern than the version …

Longshore Sediment Transport As A Function Of Energy Dissipation, Ernest R. Smith, Ping Wang
Longshore Sediment Transport As A Function Of Energy Dissipation, Ernest R. Smith, Ping Wang
Geology Faculty Publications
Experiments to measure waves, currents, and sediment transport rate for two breaker types, plunging and spilling, were conducted in a large-scale three-dimensional physical model. It was found that there was a large difference in cross-shore distribution and total sediment transport rate between the two breaker types. Total transport rates compared to existing predictive equations. The equations generally did not predict the data well. With the exception of the Kamphuis (1991) equation, which included a dependence on wave period, the predictive equations did not differentiate between breaker types.

Ecuador: Use Commercial Marketing To Increase Sustainability, Frontiers In Reproductive Health
Reproductive Health
Many nongovernmental organizations sell contraceptives through retail outlets to generate income and expand access to these products. In 1998 Centro Médico de Orientación y Planifación Familiar (CEMOPLAF) employed 25 sales agents in 14 cities throughout Ecuador. These agents sold products, including contraceptive methods and home pregnancy tests, to pharmacies, physicians, other distributors, and nontraditional outlets. Contraceptive sales were CEMOPLAF’s largest source of revenue in 1997. Sales had grown rapidly during 1996–97, but CEMOPLAF managers did not know whether product sales were profitable. With support from the Population Council and Family Health International, CEMOPLAF made a detailed analysis of product sales …
Crack Detection In A Simply Supported Rc Beam Using Simplified Laplacian, H.A. Razak, S.L. Teng, Z. Ismail, A.G. Abdul Rahman
Crack Detection In A Simply Supported Rc Beam Using Simplified Laplacian, H.A. Razak, S.L. Teng, Z. Ismail, A.G. Abdul Rahman
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
This paper describes the detection and identification of cracking severity in a reinforced concrete beam using modal data. Experimental modal test was performed on the beam before and after application of load of increasing intensity to induce a single crack at a fixed location. Modal parameters extracted were categorised into two groups, namely local response parameter (mode shape data) and global response parameters. Localised changes such as cracking reduce the stiffness of the structure, and therefore caused a localised change in the discrete function of the mode shape. From a previous research, Laplacian Operator was initially proposed. However, when applied …

Detection Of Defects In Reinforced Concrete Beams Using Modal Data, Z. Ismail, H.A. Razak, Z. Ibrahim, A.G.A. Rahman, P.A. Hin
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
A control reinforced beam and four reinforced concrete beams with various extent of defects in the form of voids and load-induced cracking were analyzed. Local flexural stiffness at each coordinate point was derived by substituting the regressed data at that point and using the centered-finite-divided-difference formula. The results of the first derivative of the local flexular stiffness for the reinforced concrete beams with voids were compared with those obtained from a similar beam with cracks in the middle. The results were also compared with a similar beam with cracks on the right side of the beam.

Expert System For Early Diagnosis Of Eye Diseases Infecting The Malaysian Population, F. Ibrahim, J. Basheer Ali, F. Jaais, M. Nasir Taib
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
This paper describes a knowledge based system employing certain expert system rules to detect different kind of eye diseases found in Malaysia. The types of eye diseases that can be detected with this system are allergic or infectious conjunctivitis, secondary and senile cataract, open angle glaucoma and acute glaucoma, keratitis and dry eyes syndrome. These are the most frequent eye diseases infecting the Malaysian population. The project was designed and programmed via the object-oriented expert system shell software, EXSYS. Expert rules were developed based on the symptoms of each type of the eye diseases, and they were presented using a …

Nuclear And Cellular Volumetric Alterations In Oral Lichen Planus And Lichenoid Lesions: A Histomorphometric Study, S.P. Khoo, A. Primasari, R. Saub
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
There is presently no line of distinction between oral lichen planus and other oral lichenoid lesions. The aim of this study is to determine using histomorphometry, the differences between these lesions. Paraffin sections from 7 normal buccal epithelium, 19 oral lichen planus (LP), 14 oral lichenoid lesions (LL) and 7 discoid lupus erythematosus-like lesions (DLE-ll) were selected. The nuclear volume (V(N)) and cellular-volume (V(CELL)) of the epithelium were assessed using an image analyser. The V(N) and V(CELL), derived for both basal and spinal strata in LP and DLE-ll were 2.3 times more than that of normal tissues. There was a …

Teething Trouble, W.L. Chai
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Sir,— I read with interest the article by M. P. Ashley 'It's only teething. A report of the myths and modern approaches to teething.' (British Dental Journal2001; 191: 4–8). As a dentist with a nine month-old daughter, this topic is definitely of my concern. I would also like to share with you one of the myths that my baby sitter told me when my daughter's lower incisors were erupting at the age of eight months. She said that my daughter's stool would not only be watery but also presented with a mixture that was granular-like in appearance. Indeed her stool …
The Effect Of Corrosion On The Natural Frequency And Modal Damping Of Reinforced Concrete Beams, H.A. Razak, F.C. Choi
The Effect Of Corrosion On The Natural Frequency And Modal Damping Of Reinforced Concrete Beams, H.A. Razak, F.C. Choi
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
An experimental investigation to study the effect of general corrosion on the modal parameters of reinforced concrete beams was conducted. The full scale beams were subjected to reinforcement corrosion until an appreciable amount of steel corrosion damage was introduced. The states of damage in the test beams were assessed through measurement of crack width and spalling. Modal tests were performed on the test beams after corrosion damage and the modal parameters extracted were compared against that from a control beam. The results obtained showed changes in the modal parameters especially natural frequencies and damping ratio. The trend in the measured …

Unenumerated Rights Under The U.S. Constitution, Thomas B. Mcaffee
Scholarly Works
The symbol of modern constitutional law, for good or ill, is Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court’s abortion decision. From the beginning, the big question has been, where in the text of the Constitution do were find this “right of privacy” that secures the right to choose abortion? Some scholars have argued that such a right could not be found in the text or structure of the Constitution. One powerful counter stems from a textual approach to giving effect to the Constitution. In this article, the author argues that, if we look carefully enough at the text and history, …

Child Care For Families Leaving Temporary Assistance For Needy Families, Rebecca L. Scharf, Sujatha Jagadeesh Branch, Cynthia Godsoe, Sherry Leiwant, Roslyn Powell, Cary Lacheen
Scholarly Works
Since Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) replaced the Aid to Families with Dependent Children program in 1996, the welfare rolls have decreased by more than 40 percent. While unemployment and poverty rates have declined, families who leave welfare generally earn low wages and remain below the poverty level. Because families leaving welfare are mostly single mothers with young children, child care is critical to their ability to work outside the home. Low-income parents trying to make ends meet, as well as employers of low-wage workers, emphasize the importance of appropriate, affordable child care in enabling women who leave welfare …

Gender And Legal Writing: Law Schools’ Dirty Little Secrets, Kathryn M. Stanchi, Jan M. Levine
Scholarly Works
While great strides have been made by legal writing professors in the past two decades, many law schools-perhaps most accurately, many law school deans-try to avoid the investments needed to provide their students with professional, high-quality instruction in legal research and legal writing. Law professors, including women law professors, have reacted to their deans' decisions to maintain the status quo largely by quiet acquiescence- although in some cases they openly support that stance. Legal writing seems to be just too hard, and too demanding in time and energy, to be taught by doctrinal law professors, most of whom are men …
Attitudes At The Bank : A Survey Of Reactions To Different Varieties Of English, Sean Wilcox
Attitudes At The Bank : A Survey Of Reactions To Different Varieties Of English, Sean Wilcox
Dissertations and Theses
In the modem world of international communication, it is more common for speakers of different varieties of English to come into contact with each other on a daily basis. This can occur not only in face to face communication, but in telephone communication as well.
This study investigates the attitudes towards a non-native or Expanding Circle (ECE) variety of English held by telephone customer service representatives at a large American financial institution. The central question of this study asks whether or not these telephone representatives will rate a speaker of a Korean-accented variety of English higher or lower than a …
