Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Patents
A compound and method for using the compound to reduce injury associated with ischemia and reperfusion of mammalian organs such as the heart. The compound may be administered as part of a preconditioning strategy which reduces the extent of injury and improves organ function following cessation and restoration of blood flow. The compound may be used in preparation for planned ischemia or in a prophylactic manner in anticipation of further ischemic events.

Packet Scheduling For Link-Sharing And Quality Of Service Support In Wireless Local Area Networks, Lars Wischhof, John W. Lockwood
Packet Scheduling For Link-Sharing And Quality Of Service Support In Wireless Local Area Networks, Lars Wischhof, John W. Lockwood
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The growing deployment of wireless local area networks (WLANs) in corporate environments, the increasing number of wireless Internet service providers and demand for quality of service support create a need for controlled sharing of wireless bandwidth. In this technical report a method for using long-term channel-state information in order to control the sharing of wireless bandwidth is studied. The algorithm enables an opera-tor of a WLAN to equalize the revenue/cost for each customer in the network and to control the link-sharing based on a combination of user-centric and operator-centric fact-tors. As an example, we adapt one of the well-know wireline …

The Changing Legal Environment And Icwa In Alaska: A Regional Study, Lisa Rieger, Caroline Brown
Reports
By 1974, according to the Association of American Indian Affairs, approximately 25 to 35 percent of all Indian children were separated from their families and placed in foster homes, adoptive homes, or institutions. The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) was passed in 1978 in response to this overwhelming evidence that Native children were being adopted out of tribes at alarming rates. ICWA mandates that tribes and Alaska Native villages have jurisdiction over their child welfare cases, and mandates certain rules when Native children's cases are heard in state courts, including permitting the tribe to intervene in the state case at any …

Method For High Flux Photocatalytic Pollution Control, Ali Raissi, Eric Martin, Nazim Muradov
Method For High Flux Photocatalytic Pollution Control, Ali Raissi, Eric Martin, Nazim Muradov
UCF Patents
A new method for design and scale-up of photocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes is disclosed. The method is based on optimizing photoprocess energetics by decoupling of the process energy efficiency from the DRE for target contaminants. The technique is applicable to both low- and high-flux photoreactor design and scale-up. The low-flux method is based on the implementation of natural biopolymeric and other low-pressure drop media support for titanium dioxide and other band-gap photocatalysts. The high-flux method is based on the implementation of multifunctional metal oxide aerogels and other media in conjunction with a novel rotating fluidized particle bed reactor.

Psychiatric Diagnosis And Inmate Profiles In A Metropolitan County Jail, Teg W. Mcbride
Psychiatric Diagnosis And Inmate Profiles In A Metropolitan County Jail, Teg W. Mcbride
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
In recent years, there has been an increase in public and professional concern regarding the mentally ill offender in the criminal justice system. Several researchers have identified the need for further investigation of the mentally ill in correctional environments. This research was pai1 of a program evaluation in a large metropolitan county jail. Four main question were investigated: 1. Do inmates identified as mentally ill differ from the general jail population? 2. How consistent are the diagnoses of those identified as mentally in the correctional computer database (SWIS) compared to the diagnoses recorded in the medical records? 3. Is there …

Quantum Anomaly In Molecular Physics, Horacio E. Camblong
Quantum Anomaly In Molecular Physics, Horacio E. Camblong
Physics and Astronomy
The interaction of an electron with a polar molecule is shown to be the simplest realization of a quantum anomaly in a physical system. The existence of a critical dipole moment for electron capture and formation of anions, which has been confirmed experimentally and numerically, is derived. This phenomenon is a manifestation of the anomaly associated with quantum symmetry breaking of the classical scale invariance exhibited by the point-dipole interaction. Finally, analysis of symmetry breaking for this system is implemented within two different models: point dipole subject to an anomaly and finite dipole subject to explicit symmetry breaking.

Phad: Packet Header Anomaly Detection For Identifying Hostile Network Traffic, Philip K. Chan, Matthew V. Mahoney
Phad: Packet Header Anomaly Detection For Identifying Hostile Network Traffic, Philip K. Chan, Matthew V. Mahoney
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
We describe an experimental packet header anomaly detector (PHAD) that learns the normal range of values for 33 fields of the Ethernet, IP, TCP, UDP, and ICMP protocols. On the 1999 DARPA off-line intrusion detection evaluation data set (Lippmann et al. 2000), PHAD detects 72 of 201 instances (29 of 59 types) of attacks, including all but 3 types that exploit the protocols examined, at a rate of 10 false alarms per day after training on 7 days of attack-free internal network traffic. In contrast to most other network intrusion detectors and firewalls, only 8 attacks (6 types) are detected …
