Lessons In Ethical Capital Asset Management: The Challenges Of A Local School Board, Susan Mctiernan Jul 2001

Lessons In Ethical Capital Asset Management: The Challenges Of A Local School Board, Susan Mctiernan

Student Scholarship

The work presented here actually had its genesis in the fall of 2000 when I began regular observations of the local school board as it attempted to resolve a major conflict that involved not just the board, but a variety of its stakeholder groups. My interest in this board's dilemma was informed by previous personal service on various boards and the challenges that were faced by my colleagues and me in dealing with various stakeholders. I sought to sort out questions associated with the involvement of stakeholders and the board and to answer those that went to whether there was …

Linda Grace Hoyer Updike: Woman, Author, And Mother, Leslie Hoffman Jul 2001

Linda Grace Hoyer Updike: Woman, Author, And Mother, Leslie Hoffman

Library Summer Fellows

Linda Grace Hoyer was a brilliant individual. She graduated from Ursinus College at the age of nineteen, received a master's from Cornell University, and after many years of diligent work, published two novels and a myriad of short stories. She lived an unusual life: reflective, feminine in her thought processes, but nevertheless somewhat stubborn in a time when women were meant to fill a subordinate role. I have found through my research that Hoyer's brilliance did not lie in her intellect and writing alone. In fact, as demonstrated by her literature's autobiographical nature, her brilliance as a writer seemed to …

The Experience Of Alcohol Use In Adolescence: A Hermeneutic Study, Stacy O. Swenson Jul 2001

The Experience Of Alcohol Use In Adolescence: A Hermeneutic Study, Stacy O. Swenson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Alcohol use among adolescents has been a long-standing problem in the United States. This study was undertaken to gain a better understanding of what the experience of using alcohol as a teenager is like. For this hermeneutic study, three participants took part in an in-depth interview that focused on their experiences with alcohol. The main theme that emerged from the experiences was Maturing. This theme and two subthemes, Peer Influence and Risk Taking, were examined for deeper meaning. These findings suggest that professionals working with adolescents can further help their clients by keeping the door open for discussion of …

A Paleoecologic Perspective On Past Plant Invasions In Yellowstone, Cathy Whitlock, Sarah H. Millspaugh Jul 2001

A Paleoecologic Perspective On Past Plant Invasions In Yellowstone, Cathy Whitlock, Sarah H. Millspaugh

Western North American Naturalist

The role of climate and natural disturbance in the past provides a context for understanding present and future changes in biota. The vegetation history of the Yellowstone region, like that of North America as a whole, is largely one of plant invasions and extinctions in response to changes in climate and environment. When Holocene plant migrations are examined on multiple spatial and temporal scales, several generalities are apparent. First, at a continental and regional scale, plant migration patterns followed the direction of climate change, whereas at local scales plant colonization was governed by site-specific conditions and possibly by biotic interactions. …

Annotated Checklist Of Exotic Vascular Plants In Yellowstone National Park, Jennifer J. Whipple Jul 2001

Annotated Checklist Of Exotic Vascular Plants In Yellowstone National Park, Jennifer J. Whipple

Western North American Naturalist

Documentation of the arrival of exotic vascular plants in Yellowstone National Park has been sporadic. An annotated checklist of exotic vascular plants is presented, with information about the approximate arrival time in the park of each species and the current extent of the infestation. Yellowstones flora includes 187 exotic vascular plant species (14.8% of the flora), and the park has an extrapolated mean number of exotic species per 10 km2 of 47.3. The situation in Yellowstone is compared with other areas in North America. The increase in exotics mirrors a corresponding increase in visitation.

Mountain Goats In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosytem: A Prehistoric And Historical Context, Paul Schullery, Lee Whittlesey Jul 2001

Mountain Goats In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosytem: A Prehistoric And Historical Context, Paul Schullery, Lee Whittlesey

Western North American Naturalist

Because the relatively recent colonization of portions of Yellowstone National Park by introduced mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) from public game lands in Montana raises important policy and management questions for the park, it is necessary to understand the prehistoric and early historical record of mountain goats in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. We reviewed previous paleontological, archeological, and historical studies of goat presence and examined a large body of historical material for evidence of goats. Native mountain goat range most closely approached the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to the west, but no modern authority claims goats were resident in the …

Status And Conservation Of Salmonids In Relation To Hydrologic Integrity In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Robert W. Van Kirk, Lyn Benjamin Jul 2001

Status And Conservation Of Salmonids In Relation To Hydrologic Integrity In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Robert W. Van Kirk, Lyn Benjamin

Western North American Naturalist

Native salmonid status was evaluated with an index quantifying distribution and abundance of cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki) and grayling (Thymallus arcticus) in 41 watersheds comprising the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. We assessed hydrologic integrity with a percentile-based index measuring cumulative effects of reservoirs, surface water withdrawals, and consumptive water use. Status of native salmonids was poor in 70% of the watersheds; exceptions occurred in a north-south core extending from the Upper Yellowstone southward through the national parks to Bear Lake. Hydrologic integrity was highest in headwater areas and lowest in lower-elevation watersheds. Status of native and nonnative …

Income Support Policy And The U.S. Child Support System, Jane Koppelman Jul 2001

Income Support Policy And The U.S. Child Support System, Jane Koppelman

National Health Policy Forum

This paper examines the economic profile of custodial and noncustodial parents and the status of the federal/state child support enforcement system. It discusses the reasons for the historically low rate of child support collection; the prospects for new computerized systems to improve the rates of both paternities established and payments collected; ways the system can sustain funding; and the extent to which child support payments can improve the well-being of low-income families.

Responses Of An Arctic Landscape To Lateglacial And Early Holocene Climatic Changes: The Importance Of Moisture, Daniel H. Mann, Dorothy M. Peteet, Richard E. Reanier, Michael L. Kunz Jul 2001

Responses Of An Arctic Landscape To Lateglacial And Early Holocene Climatic Changes: The Importance Of Moisture, Daniel H. Mann, Dorothy M. Peteet, Richard E. Reanier, Michael L. Kunz

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Many of the physical and biological processes that characterize arctic ecosystems are unique to high latitudes, and their sensitivities to climate change are poorly understood. Stratigraphic records of land–surface processes and vegetation change in the Arctic Foothills of northern Alaska reveal how tundra landscapes responded to climatic changes between 13,000 and 8000 14Cyr BP. Peat deposition began and shrub vegetation became widespread ca. 12,500 14Cyr BP, probably in response to the advent of warmer and wetter climate. Increased slope erosion caused rapid alluviation in valleys, and Populus trees spread northward along braided floodplains before 11,000 14Cyr BP. …

The Three-Dimensional Random Field Ising Magnet: Interfaces, Scaling, And The Nature Of States, Alan Middleton, Daniel S. Fisher Jul 2001

The Three-Dimensional Random Field Ising Magnet: Interfaces, Scaling, And The Nature Of States, Alan Middleton, Daniel S. Fisher

Physics - All Scholarship

The nature of the zero temperature ordering transition in the 3D Gaussian random field Ising magnet is studied numerically, aided by scaling analyses. In the ferromagnetic phase the scaling of the roughness of the domain walls, $w\sim L^\zeta$, is consistent with the theoretical prediction $\zeta = 2/3$. As the randomness is increased through the transition, the probability distribution of the interfacial tension of domain walls scales as for a single second order transition. At the critical point, the fractal dimensions of domain walls and the fractal dimension of the outer surface of spin clusters are investigated: there are at least …
