Assessing The ‘Whole Animal’: A Free Choice Profiling Approach, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Tony E.A. Hunter, Michael T. Mendl, Alistair B. Lawrence Aug 2001

Assessing The ‘Whole Animal’: A Free Choice Profiling Approach, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Tony E.A. Hunter, Michael T. Mendl, Alistair B. Lawrence

Sentience Collection

The qualitative assessment of animal behaviour summarizes the different aspects of an animal’s dynamic style of interaction with the environment, using descriptors such as ‘confident’, ‘nervous’, ‘calm’ or ‘excitable’. Scientists frequently use such terms in studies of animal personality and temperament, but, wary of anthropomorphism, are reluctant to do so in studies of animal welfare. We hypothesize that qualitative behaviour assessment, in describing behaviour as an expressive process, may have a stronger observational foundation than is currently recognized, and may be of use as an integrative welfare assessment tool. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the inter- and intraobserver reliability …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xix. A Reexamination Of The Variability Of Hd 10909=Uv Fornacis, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry, Keinon Brooks, Douglas S. Hall Aug 2001

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xix. A Reexamination Of The Variability Of Hd 10909=Uv Fornacis, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry, Keinon Brooks, Douglas S. Hall

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have obtained new spectroscopy and photometry of the K0 IV, chromospherically active, single-lined spectroscopic binary HD 10909. Those observations show that the previously reported orbital and light variability periods are incorrect. HD 10909 has an orbital period of 30.1067 days and an eccentricity of 0.499. Its rotation period of 64.1 days is more than twice as long as its orbital period. The primary is situated near the base of the first-ascent red giant branch. Thus, its asynchronous rotation is likely the result of its recent evolution through the Hertzsprung gap, combined with its relatively long orbital period and high …

On The Preparation Of High School Mathematics Teachers, Edna Maura Zuffi Aug 2001

On The Preparation Of High School Mathematics Teachers, Edna Maura Zuffi

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

In this paper I discuss some results got in 1997/98 with Brazilian mathematics school teachers. The research was done to investigate their mathematical language as related to the concept of function. A dichotomy was detected between “formal” and “practical” language they used to express their own conceptions of function, as well as to teach their students this subject. Also, I found teachers’ conceptual images “shrinking” as soon as they were far from their colleges or universities programs.

Nationalism As A Contingent Event: Som Ereflections On The Ethio-Eriterean Experience, Mesfin Araya Aug 2001

Nationalism As A Contingent Event: Som Ereflections On The Ethio-Eriterean Experience, Mesfin Araya

International Conference on African Development Archives

What is politically significant and what really attracts scholarly research in any nationalism is the awakening of the masses - i.e. the effective transition from elite-based to mass-based nationalism; this study is concerned with that transition in the Eritrean experience in the modern political history of Ethiopia.

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (Xps) And Magnetization Studies Of Iron–Vanadium Phosphate Glasses, M. A. Salim, G. D. Khattak, Petru S. Fodor, Lowell E. Wenger Aug 2001

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (Xps) And Magnetization Studies Of Iron–Vanadium Phosphate Glasses, M. A. Salim, G. D. Khattak, Petru S. Fodor, Lowell E. Wenger

Physics Faculty Publications

Vanadium phosphate glasses containing Fe2O3 with the chemical composition [(Fe2O3)x(V2O5)0.6−x(P2O5)0.4], where x=0.00, 0.10, 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30, have been prepared and investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The core level binding energies of V 2p, Fe 2p, P 2p and P 2s in the Fe2O3–vanadium phosphate glasses have been measured and shifts from the corresponding binding energies measured for V2O5, Fe2O3 and P2O5 powders are accounted for by changes in the next-nearest neighbor environment of these atoms in the P4O10 local structure. The O 1s spectra for the glasses are single, symmetric peaks arising from nearly …

Body Length, Activity Level, And Avoidance Learning In Zebrafish Exposed To Nicotine As Embryos, Tim Lawrence Aug 2001

Body Length, Activity Level, And Avoidance Learning In Zebrafish Exposed To Nicotine As Embryos, Tim Lawrence

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Smoking continues to be a significant health problem in the United States and throughout the world. One of the many aspects of the health risks of smoking that have been investigated is the effect of maternal smoking on developing embryos. In particular, exposure of embryos to nicotine is believed to cause attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related problems in children. Both correlational research with humans and experimental research with animals have supported this belief. However, the mechanisms of the effect of nicotine on developing embryos are not fully understood. The zebrafish offers a useful model of the effects of nicotine on …

Spectral Sensitivity Of The Goldfish Erg And Optic Tectum Before And After Optic Nerve Damage, Jenel Pile Aug 2001

Spectral Sensitivity Of The Goldfish Erg And Optic Tectum Before And After Optic Nerve Damage, Jenel Pile

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It is well known that visual neurons in lower vertebrates regenerate after damage. Thus, the visual system has served as a useful model for neural regeneration studies. However, most of the research on neural regeneration has focused on the recovery of anatomical connections; little has been done assessing the return of visual function. The purpose of this study was to determine the return of function of the goldfish optic nerve at four time intervals after damage (crush). An increment threshold procedure was used to obtain electroretinogram (ERG) and tectal responses to light onset and termination to various wavelengths of light. …

Parapsychological Beliefs And The Effects Of Exposure To Skeptical Inquiry, Augustine Seeger Aug 2001

Parapsychological Beliefs And The Effects Of Exposure To Skeptical Inquiry, Augustine Seeger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Belief in parapsychological/paranormal phenomena is widespread in the American public (Gallup & Newport, 1991). Messer and Griggs (1989) reported that misinformation through the media, including uncritical reports of events and pseudodocumentaries about paranormal phenomena, is a possible reason for the substantial belief in the paranormal evidenced by the American public. The realm of the parapsychological is a particularly important area of research, especially to those who teach psychology. Messer and Griggs (1989) provided evidence that the prevalence of belief in the paranormal was also rather extensive in a sample of college students. Belief and involvement in certain paranormal phenomenon has …

Metalation Of The Di- And Tri-Methoxybenzenes, Phillip Shelton Aug 2001

Metalation Of The Di- And Tri-Methoxybenzenes, Phillip Shelton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Hydrocarbon solvents are known to be unreactive towards organolithium reagents and also to afford little support for ortho-metalation reactions. In contrast, both m- and odimethoxybenzene afford 80% "ion-multiple specific" monometalation in hydrocarbon solvent (n-hexane, cyclohexane, toluene) without the addition of any catalyst (ether or amine). These observations are, in part, attributed to the 1,2- and 1,3- formation of the n-BuLi dimer, the most reactive form of n-BuLi. In other words these substrates are acting in a "substrate-catalyzed" manner. Extensions of these concepts to 1,2,3-, 1,2,4- and 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzenes have led to further unusual observations. In particular, the 1,2,3-system affords an interesting …

Restoring Enriched Grasslands: Effects Of Mowing On Species Richness, Productivity, And Nitrogen Retention, John L. Maron, Robert L. Jefferies Aug 2001

Restoring Enriched Grasslands: Effects Of Mowing On Species Richness, Productivity, And Nitrogen Retention, John L. Maron, Robert L. Jefferies

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Species-rich grasslands that become enriched with nitrogen often suffer decreases in species richness, increases in plant biomass, and invasion by weedy exotic species. Suitable techniques to restore enriched grasslands and reestablish native communities are increasingly needed. Here we report results of a 5-yr experiment in enriched coastal prairie grasslands (Bodega Marine Reserve, Bodega Bay, California, USA), to determine the combined effects of mowing and biomass removal on total soil nitrogen, net rates of mineralization, nitrogen retention, and species richness and biomass. We mowed and removed plant biomass from plots in areas where the N-fixing shrub, bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus …

Differential Adoption Of Technologies And Its Implications For Policy Choice Between Equity And Growth, Beyene Tadesse Aug 2001

Differential Adoption Of Technologies And Its Implications For Policy Choice Between Equity And Growth, Beyene Tadesse

International Conference on African Development Archives

Government policies often attempt to create simultaneous impact on economic efficiency and equity. The Ethiopian government optimistically has targeted to simultaneously achieve at improvement in agricultural efficiency (growth) and equitable distribution of the benefits by all farmers in the whole part of the country. However, many scholars most often argue that growth and equity are inversely related in most development processes. Thus, the main objective of the paper was to evaluate the interhousehold and interregional technology adoption pattern (implies both growth and equity). The conceptual relationship of growth and equity, and experiences in adoption studies were first assessed. Then three …

Perspectives On Institutional Reform And Development In Ethiopia: The Critical Role Of Building Enabling Institutions For Economic Growth And Development, Sisay Asefa Aug 2001

Perspectives On Institutional Reform And Development In Ethiopia: The Critical Role Of Building Enabling Institutions For Economic Growth And Development, Sisay Asefa

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper provides some normative perspectives on sustainable economic and political reform in contemporary Ethiopia, by focusing on the need to establish enabling institutions for economic growth and development. The paper begins with the basic premise that poverty in Ethiopia is primarily a problem of institutional failure, and that at a successful economic reform not only must be focused on poverty-focused economic growth in a country where about 50 percent of the population is below the poverty line, but it must also be accompanied with institutional reform and development that may result in a positive-sum outcome for all constituent groups …

Private Sector Development In Ethiopia, Solomon Deneke Aug 2001

Private Sector Development In Ethiopia, Solomon Deneke

International Conference on African Development Archives

Ethiopia is known for its longstanding freedom and civilization that go as back as over three thousand years. Unfortunately the country is now known as backward, least developed and one of the poorest of the poor. This historic plight has its own background and long process that this paper does not intend to get into. The major objective of this paper is to assess private sector that plays a paramount role in the Ethiopian economy.

Foreign Direct Investment And Uncertainty: Implications For Ethiopia, Adugna Lemi, Sisay Asefa Aug 2001

Foreign Direct Investment And Uncertainty: Implications For Ethiopia, Adugna Lemi, Sisay Asefa

International Conference on African Development Archives

The paper examines the effect of price and exchange rate uncertainty and political instability on the inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to selected African economies. Measures of uncertainty of inflation rate and real exchange rate are incorporated by taking the conditional variance of the residual of the Autoregressive (AR) processes of each series. Pooled data result without accounting for country specific factors is misleading. Fixed effects model provides a better explanation of the variation of FDI flow to African economies. The results show that uncertainty in the rate of inflation and political instability constrain the flow of FDI only …

Exports, Trade Liberalization And Economic Growth In Sub-Saharan Africa, Seid Hassan Aug 2001

Exports, Trade Liberalization And Economic Growth In Sub-Saharan Africa, Seid Hassan

International Conference on African Development Archives

Despite the various efforts made to promote sustainable economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa, there had been little achievement in terms of progress in standard of living and poverty reduction in this part of the world. Given the absence of a perfect strategy to overcome these problems, most Sub-Saharan African countries have tended to place undue emphasis on export promotion in the context of worldwide economic liberalization and globalization. Moreover, as a result of opening up their economies in the 1990s, especially in the export/import sector of these economies, it has been reported, some Sub-Saharan African countries have experienced some positive …

The Macroeconomics Of Foreign Aid To Ethiopia: Internal Balance And Fiscal Response-An Alternate Framework, Getnet Alemu Aug 2001

The Macroeconomics Of Foreign Aid To Ethiopia: Internal Balance And Fiscal Response-An Alternate Framework, Getnet Alemu

International Conference on African Development Archives

Foreign aid recipient fiscal response in developing countries is studied using utility/welfare maximization principle. The underlying assumption of this function (utility/welfare can be maximized by narrowing the deviations of the actual values from their desired values subject to the constraints of finance) doesn’t capture the interplay between project aid inflows and the adjustment process of the government budget. This paper proposes an alternative framework in conceptualizing the recipients fiscal response. This was possible due to the special feature of this paper that aid is disassociated from foreign capital inflow and also identified by its usage which is not the case …

Colonizing Ideas: A Comparative Look At Receptivity To The Adoption Of Western Education In Japan And Ethiopia, Getachew Felleke Aug 2001

Colonizing Ideas: A Comparative Look At Receptivity To The Adoption Of Western Education In Japan And Ethiopia, Getachew Felleke

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper examines the challenges and promises that accompanied the introduction of modern education into two non-modern societies. The study is motivated by an interest to fathom some of the causes and sources of Ethiopia’s multifaceted social and economic problems. Taking as its point of departure the view that, over the long run, evolutionary progress of societies should be the norm, the study seeks to identify the impediments that have blocked such a normal pace of progress in Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s early experience in building up its education system is compared and contrasted with that of Japan’s. The roles played by …

Emerging Informal Land Markets: A Quest For Equitable And Efficient Land Tenure Systems, Tesfaye Teklu Aug 2001

Emerging Informal Land Markets: A Quest For Equitable And Efficient Land Tenure Systems, Tesfaye Teklu

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper is motivated by the need for an informed analytical discussion on land issues and policy options. “There is a danger that if a process of learning and policy dialogue on land tenure issues is not started soon, Ethiopia, like a number of other African countries, will adopt ‘ready made’ land tenure reforms that are based on ideological considerations and misconceptions about current problems” (Bruce, Hoben and Rahmato, 1994). This paper shares this view (or, warning) and follows it as a guiding principle.

Simulating Strategy Options For Enhancing Hyv-Maize Technology Adoption In Oromia, Ethiopia, Bedassa Tadesse Aug 2001

Simulating Strategy Options For Enhancing Hyv-Maize Technology Adoption In Oromia, Ethiopia, Bedassa Tadesse

International Conference on African Development Archives

Using a sample selection induced bivariate probit model fitted to data collected from small scale, resource poor farmers in Western Oromia (Jimma, Ilu-Ababaor, Estern and Western Welega zones), I define and simulate different strategy (Pure and Mixed) scenarios. The scenarios provide the extent to which the adoption of maize technology package (HYV-seeds, fertilizers and planting methods) among currently non-adopter maize growers could be increased with the use of different strategies. Among the scenarios evaluated, I find a strategy that emphasizes information approach, as a pure strategy, or when integrated with education and/or the agent approaches-in a mixed strategy, significantly influential …

Supply Response Of Ethiopian Farmers To Price And Non-Price Factors, Abrar Suleiman Aug 2001

Supply Response Of Ethiopian Farmers To Price And Non-Price Factors, Abrar Suleiman

International Conference on African Development Archives

The main purpose of this study is to examine the responsiveness of peasant farmers to changes in price and non-price factors. To this end, quadratic production and restricted profit functions are fitted to farm-level survey data from Ethiopia. The results indicate that farmers respond significantly to price incentives, but the effect of prices on output supply and fertilizer demand is negligible. The most important finding is that non-price factors are far more important in affecting production and resource use than price incentives. The results underscore the need to strengthen market incentives through effective policies that will improve farmers’ access to …

A Comparative Study On Projected And Actual Manufacturing Times To Identify The Source Of Customer Delinquency, Zaki Kuruppalil

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was an investigation of the projected lead time and the actual lead time for a part manufactured at Tri-Industries Inc., Terre Haute, Indiana. The research was focused on a single part produced in Tri-Industries. The problem was that there is a difference in the projected lead time and the actual lead time of the part under investigation. The actual lead time was longer than projected lead time, which resulted in the company being delinquent in customer delivery. This investigation was conducted to find out the source for customer delinquency for a single part in Tri-Industries. The conclusion was …

Transport In 3He-4He Mixtures In Restricted Geometry, A. E. Meyerovich Aug 2001

Transport In 3He-4He Mixtures In Restricted Geometry, A. E. Meyerovich

Physics Faculty Publications

The effect of wall scattering on transport in dilute degenerate 3He–4He mixtures in quasi-2D flow channels or films is discussed. The calculation of the quasiparticle mean free path combines particle–wall and particle–particle collisions including the interference between them. The spin polarization affects the wall-driven contribution by changing bulk mean free path and particle wavelength. The expressions for the wall contribution to transport coefficients are especially transparent in the limiting cases of large and small bulk mean free paths. The calculated temperature, concentration, and polarization dependences of the transport coefficients allow one to extract parameters of surface roughness …

Yang-Lee Edge Singularities Determined From Experimental High-Field Magnetization Data, Christian Binek, Wolfgang Kleemann, H. Aruga Katori Aug 2001

Yang-Lee Edge Singularities Determined From Experimental High-Field Magnetization Data, Christian Binek, Wolfgang Kleemann, H. Aruga Katori

Christian Binek Publications

The isothermal magnetization m (H) of the metamagnet FeCl2 is measured in axial magnetic fields 0 ≤ μ0Ha ≤ 12 T at temperatures 34 ≤ T ≤ 53 K above the Néel temperature, where the system is essentially a two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet. The analysis of the data indicates experimental accessibility of the critical exponent μ of the Yang-Lee edge singularities. They manifest themselves in divergences of the density functions g(θ), which quantify the distribution of the zeros of the partition function on the Lee-Yang unit circle in the complex plane. In accordance with …

An Overview Of Legal Developments In Managed Care Caselaw And Selected Case Studies Of Legal Developments In State Contracting For Managed Behavioral Health Services, Sara J. Rosenbaum, D. Richard Mauery, Joel B. Teitelbaum Aug 2001

An Overview Of Legal Developments In Managed Care Caselaw And Selected Case Studies Of Legal Developments In State Contracting For Managed Behavioral Health Services, Sara J. Rosenbaum, D. Richard Mauery, Joel B. Teitelbaum

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

This analysis provides an overview of recent legal developments in managed care case law. Three types of cases are reviewed: claims brought by managed care enrollees against managed care companies and health plans; cases related either directly or indirectly to managed care and brought by both beneficiaries and managed care organizations against state Medicaid agencies and other public agencies engaged in the purchase of managed care; and cases brought by individual health professionals against managed care organizations.
