Clip Reactions In Standing Seam Roofs Of Metal Buildings, Shaunda Lynn Fowler Aug 2001

Clip Reactions In Standing Seam Roofs Of Metal Buildings, Shaunda Lynn Fowler

Theses and Dissertations

Prediction of the clip reactions of a standing seam roof in a metal building under dynamic loading is of great interest because currently static uplift tests are the standard for determining the design load capacity. The use of a static test to replicate a dynamic loading leads to a great amount of debate because clearly a standing seam roof visually behaves very different under the two different types of loads. This leads to the question of whether a static test accurately replicates the magnitude of loads that the roof clips would feel under a dynamic wind load. This study uses …

Evaluating Data Averaging Techniques For High Gradient Flow Fields Through Uncertainty Analysis, Boon Liang Heng Aug 2001

Evaluating Data Averaging Techniques For High Gradient Flow Fields Through Uncertainty Analysis, Boon Liang Heng

Theses and Dissertations

Experimental data from two cold airflow turbine tests were evaluated. The two tests had different, relatively high gradient flow fields at the turbine exit. The objective of the research was to evaluate data requirements, including the averaging techniques, the number of measurements, and the types of measurements needed, for high gradient flow fields. Guidelines could then be established for future tests that could allow reduction in test time and costs. An enormous amount of data was collected for both tests. These test data were then manipulated in various ways to study the effects of the averaging techniques, the number of …

Heavy‐Element Diffusion In Metal‐Poor Stars, Brian Chaboyer, W. H. Fenton, Jenica E. Nelan, D. J. Patnaude, Francesca E. Simon Aug 2001

Heavy‐Element Diffusion In Metal‐Poor Stars, Brian Chaboyer, W. H. Fenton, Jenica E. Nelan, D. J. Patnaude, Francesca E. Simon

Dartmouth Scholarship

Stellar evolution models that include the effect of helium and heavy-element diffusion have been calculated for initial iron abundances of [Fe/H] = -2.3, -2.1, -1.9, and -1.7. These models were calculated for a large variety of masses and three separate mixing lengths, α = 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00 (with α = 1.75 being the solar calibrated mixing length). The change in the surface iron abundance for stars of different masses was determined for the ages of 11, 13, and 15 Gyr. Iron settles out of the surface convection zone on the main sequence ; this iron is dredged back up …

Coexistence Of Covalent And Metallic Bonding In The Boron Intercalation Superconductor Mgb2, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Mark Van Schilfgaarde, Vladimir P. Antropov Aug 2001

Coexistence Of Covalent And Metallic Bonding In The Boron Intercalation Superconductor Mgb2, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Mark Van Schilfgaarde, Vladimir P. Antropov

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Chemical bonding and electronic structure of MgB2, a boron-based newly discovered superconductor, is studied using self-consistent band-structure techniques. Analysis of the transformation of the band structure for the hypothetical series of graphite–primitive graphite–primitive graphitelike boron–intercalated boron, shows that the band structure of MgB2 is graphitelike, with π bands falling deeper than in ordinary graphite. These bands possess a typically delocalized and metallic, as opposed to covalent, character. The in-plane σ bands retain their two-dimensional (2D) covalent character, but exhibit a metallic hole-type conductivity. The coexistence of 2D covalent in-plane and three-dimensional (3D) metallic-type interlayer conducting bands is …

Yang-Lee Edge Singularities From Experimental High Field Magnetization Data, Christian Binek Aug 2001

Yang-Lee Edge Singularities From Experimental High Field Magnetization Data, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

The isothermal magnetization m(H) of the metamagnet FeCl2 is measured in axial magnetic fields 0≤µ0Ha≤12 T at temperatures 34≤T≤53 K above the Néel temperature, where the system is essentially a two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet. The analysis of the data indicates experimental accessibility of the critical exponent µ of the Yang-Lee edge singularities. They manifest themselves in divergences of the density functions g(θ), which quantify the distribution of the zeros of the partition function on the Lee-Yang unit circle in the complex plane. In accordance with the hypothesis of universality, a critical exponent close to the theoretical prediction for the two-dimensional Ising …

Managing Feedlot Cattle To Reduce Nutrient Waste, Julie Walker, Brad Johnson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Management opportunities can reduce feed costs and the cost of excess nutrient waste outputs. The key to controlling excess nutrient output is controlling nutrient intakes. The question becomes whether nutrient excretion can be reduced without negatively impacting animal performance?

Consumer-Producer Interaction: A Strategic Analysis Of The Market For Customized Products , Benedict G.C. Dellaert , Niladri B. Syam

Review of Marketing Science Working Papers

This paper focuses on the process by which consumers and producers interact to create better value for consumers. This happens in many situations but is arguably most prominent in mass-customization, an area that has recently gained a lot of popularity among manufacturers (Business Week, March 20, 2000). In terms of communications, such interaction entails a shift from the one-way communication (usually from seller to buyer) of traditional markets, to a two-way communication. Specifically, potential producers need to elicit preference (and other) information from consumers. They then have to provide a product that correctly incorporates such information. This brings up many …

Medicare Coverage: Lessons From The Past, Questions For The Future, Robin J. Strongin

National Health Policy Forum

This paper describes the Medicare coverage process for emerging technologies and the ways it has changed over time. Issues addressed include both the national coverage process and local medical review policies, which account for 90 percent of the coverage determinations. The paper also includes a discussion of the relationship between the coverage process and technology assessment, payment systems and the ongoing debate over coverage criteria and levels of evidence.
