Search For Quark-Lepton Compositeness And A Heavy W′ Boson Using The Eν Channel In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Dec 2001

Search For Quark-Lepton Compositeness And A Heavy W′ Boson Using The Eν Channel In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present searches for quark-lepton compositeness and a heavy W′ boson at high electron-neutrino transverse mass. We use ~110 pb-1 of data collected in pp̅ collisions at √s= 1.8 TeV by the CDF Collaboration during 1992–1995. The data are consistent with standard model expectations. Limits are set on the quark-lepton compositeness scale Λ, the ratio of partial cross sections σ (W′ → eν)/ σ (W → eν), and the mass of a W′ boson with standard model couplings. We exclude Λ< 2.81 TeV and a W′ boson with mass below 754 GeV/c2 at the 95% …

Reduced Order Modeling For High Speed Flows With Moving Shocks, David J. Lucia Dec 2001

Reduced Order Modeling For High Speed Flows With Moving Shocks, David J. Lucia

Theses and Dissertations

The use of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) for reduced order modeling (ROM) of fluid problems is extended to high-speed compressible fluid flows. The challenge in using POD for high-speed flows is presented by the presence of moving discontinuities in the flow field. To overcome these difficulties, a domain decomposition approach is developed that isolates the region containing the moving shock wave for special treatment. The domain decomposition implementation produces internal boundaries between the various domain sections. The domains are linked using optimization-based solvers which employ constraints to ensure smoothness in overlapping portions of the internal boundary. This approach is applied …

The Frat Volume 99 Number 01 October, November & December 2001, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)

2001-2006

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

Developmental System Drift And Flexibility In Evolutionary Trajectories, John R. True Dec 2001

Developmental System Drift And Flexibility In Evolutionary Trajectories, John R. True

Ecology & Evolution Faculty Publications

The comparative analysis of homologous characters is a staple of evolutionary developmental biology and often involves extrapolating from experimental data in model organisms to infer developmental events in non-model organisms. In order to determine the general importance of data obtained in model organisms, it is critical to know how often and to what degree similar phenotypes expressed in different taxa are formed by divergent developmental processes. Both comparative studies of distantly related species and genetic analysis of closely related species indicate that many characters known to be homologous between taxa have diverged in their morphogenetic or gene regulatory underpinnings. This …

The Effect Of The Human Papillomavirus E5 Protein On Apoptosis In Human Foreskin Keratinocytes, Kasey Pattan Dec 2001

The Effect Of The Human Papillomavirus E5 Protein On Apoptosis In Human Foreskin Keratinocytes, Kasey Pattan

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

There are over seventy genotypes of Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs), some cause benign warts and others are risk factors for the development of carcinomas of the respiratory and genital tract. Research has proven that the high risk HPV 16 E5 protein in the presence of epidermal growth (EGF) acts as a survival factor resulting in elevated levels of activated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and activated levels of ERK 1/2 and Akt, two signaling molecules downstream of EGFR, in UVP irradiated human foreskin keratinocytes (HFKs). This leads to the protection of the cells from UVB induced apoptosis. The purpose of this …

Detection Of Progressive Deterioration In Early Onset Schizophrenia With A New Statistical Method, Ying Qing Chen, Mei-Cheng Wang, William W. Eaton Dec 2001

Detection Of Progressive Deterioration In Early Onset Schizophrenia With A New Statistical Method, Ying Qing Chen, Mei-Cheng Wang, William W. Eaton

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Much controversy exists over whether the course of schizophrenia, as defined by the lengths of repeated community tenures, is progressively ameliorating or deteriorating. This article employs a new statistical method proposed by Wang and Chen (2000) to analyze the Denmark registry data in Eaton, et al (1992). The new statistical method correctly handles the bias caused by induced informative censoring, which is an interaction of the heterogeneity of schizophrenia patients and long-term follow-up. The analysis shows a progressive deterioration pattern in terms of community tenures for the full registry cohort, rather than a progressive amelioration pattern as reported for a …
