Respect For Life: Abortion In Islam And The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Donna Lee Bowen Oct 2001

Respect For Life: Abortion In Islam And The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Donna Lee Bowen

BYU Studies

While the indiscriminate taking of life is condemned by major religions and ethical systems worldwide, killing in some well-defined situations is less clearly condemned. For example, most major religious traditions put killing in war in a separate category. Euthanasia, which the Netherlands legalized in 2000, is passionately debated. Probably today's most debated means of taking life is abortion, for the purposes of this discussion abortion means not the unintentional loss of a fetus but a purposeful termination of pregnancy.

Ocean Drilling Constrains Carbonate Platform Formation And Miocene Sea Level On The Australian Margin, Alexandra R. Isern, F. S. Anselmetti, P. Blum, Shipboard Scientific Party Oct 2001

Ocean Drilling Constrains Carbonate Platform Formation And Miocene Sea Level On The Australian Margin, Alexandra R. Isern, F. S. Anselmetti, P. Blum, Shipboard Scientific Party

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Carbonate platforms are large geologic structures composed of the remains of formerly living, calcium carbonate‐secreting organisms that can develop in environments ranging from tropical to temperate, and in locations that are free of siliceous sediment to those with significant amounts of sediment from land. Because these platforms are composed of biogenic remains sensitive to changes in environmental conditions such as sea level, wind or currents, nutrient content, and water temperature, the study of carbonate platforms provides fundamental information regarding environmental change in a range of environments. In addition to their high‐quality environmental record, carbonate platforms are often important petroleum reservoirs. …

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

During the 1998 Leonid meteor shower, multi-instrument observations of persistent meteor trains were made from the Starfire Optical Range on Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, and from a secondary site in nearby Placitas, New Mexico. The University of Illinois Na resonance lidar measured the Na density and temperature in the trains, while various cameras captured images and videos of the trains, some of which were observed to persist for more than 30 min. The Na density measurements allow the contribution of Na airglow to the observed train luminescence to be quantified for the first time. To do this, persistent …

Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Developing Successful Interventions For The Classroom, Amanda Dawn Newman Oct 2001

Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Developing Successful Interventions For The Classroom, Amanda Dawn Newman

Senior Honors Theses

Previously an abundant amount of research has been undertaken concerning interventions that should or should not be used for the treatment of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity-Disorder. The problem with prescribing and implementing interventions lies in the controversies that surround them. The number one controversy surrounds the issue of whether or not stimulant medication, commonly Ritalin, should be used as an intervention. A literature-based research approach and original research in the form of a survey and subsequent observations were used to discover whether stimulant medication should be used within the classroom and what forms of classroom interventions and modifications teachers and researchers are …

Economically Optimal Crop Cycle Length For Major Sugarcane Varieties In Louisiana (Research Report #111), M. E. Salassi, J. B. Breaux

LSU AgCenter Research Reports

The recent, widespread adoption of the variety LCP 85-384 has caused sugarcane producers in Louisiana to reevaluate the number of stubble crops to keep in production before plowing out and replanting. This report outlines a procedure that can be used to determine the optimal number of sugarcane stubble crops to keep in production with the goal of maximizing producer net returns.

The average extensive air shower longitudinal development profile is measured. Events between 1017 and 1018 eV recorded by the HiRes/MIA hybrid experiment are used for the average profile. Several functional forms are examined using this average profile. The best-fit parameters for the above functions are determined. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

Wooster Magazine: Fall 2001, Lisa Watts

Wooster Magazine: 2001-2010

This edition of the Wooster Magazine was published in the Fall of 2001. The first section of the magazine covers the days/weeks from after the September 11 attacks (pages 8-13). The two weeks from 9/11 are recalled from the perspective of what happened on campus. Many alumni recite their experience from the day. Following that section, John E Whitcomb '73 writes about basic budgeting for college students. Class notes interrupt the budgeting discussion from page 17 to 56. The fundraising efforts of Louis Holden from after the Old Main fire are recounted. Ansley Coale Jr. '66 talks on his distillery. …

Early Language Learning With And Without Music, Douglas Fisher Oct 2001

Early Language Learning With And Without Music, Douglas Fisher

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Eighty students who spoke Spanish at home were randomly assigned one of four teachers. Two of the teachers used a great deal of music in their classrooms while the other two did not. The students and their teachers remained together for two years - kindergarten and first grade. Literacy achievement data suggests that music had a positive effect on oral language and reading scores. Differences focused on the use of music for morning opening, music and signing while working with words, and the use of music during listening stations.

The Language Of God: Understanding The Qur'an, Daniel C. Peterson Oct 2001

The Language Of God: Understanding The Qur'an, Daniel C. Peterson

BYU Studies

The faith of Islam, one of the three great "Abrahamic" religions, as they might be called, is closely akin to the other two, Judaism and Christianity. It is tightly bound to and thoroughly permeated by its holy book, the Qur'an. Strangely, though, despite the historical and contemporary importance of Islam and despite Islam's kinship with the faith that has dominated Western civilization, neither Islam in general nor the Qur'an in particular is well known in the West. Nor do Westerners typically know very much about the founder of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad. Yet the story of Muhammad is a dramatic …

Behind The Arabesque: Understanding Islamic Art And Architecture, Cynthia Finlayson

BYU Studies

God is the light of the heavens and the earth. A likeness of His light is as a pillar on which is a lamp—the lamp is in a glass, the glass is as it were a brightly shining star—lit from a blessed olive-tree, neither eastern nor western, the oil whereof gives light, though fire touch it not—light upon light. God guides to His light whom He pleases. And God sets forth parables for men, and God is Knower of all things.

—Qur'an 24:35
