Literary Evidence For Roman Arithmetic With Fractions, David W. Maher, John F. Makowski Oct 2001

Literary Evidence For Roman Arithmetic With Fractions, David W. Maher, John F. Makowski

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Roman arithmetic is a perennially troubling subject for both classicists and mathematicians. Scholars universally comment on the difficulty posed by Roman alphabetical notation both in expressing simple figures and in doing written calculations. For example, Lloyd Motz and Jefferson Weaver with exasperation ask, "How ... can anyone do any arithmetic with DCCCLXXXVIII, the Roman equivalent of 888?," and Florian Cajori concludes that the Romans must have resorted to the abacus in order to multiply a number like 723 (DCCXXIII) by 364 (CCCLXIV).' Yet our sources, literary and inscriptional, indicate that the Romans were capable of highly sophisticated calculations, and, of …

Sensor-Assisted Video Mosaicing For Seafloor Mapping, Yuri Rzhanov, Randy G. Cutter Jr., Lloyd C. Huff

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

This paper discusses a proposed processing technique for combining video imagery with auxiliary sensor information. The latter greatly simplifies image processing by reducing complexity of the transformation model. The mosaics produced by this technique are adequate for many applications, in particular habitat mapping. The algorithm is demonstrated through simulations and hardware configuration is described.

Now You See It, Now You Don't: Depublication And Nonpublication Of Opinions Raise Motive Questions, Bennett L. Gershman Oct 2001

Now You See It, Now You Don't: Depublication And Nonpublication Of Opinions Raise Motive Questions, Bennett L. Gershman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The basis for these comments is a decision last year by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in Anastasoff v. United States. The court held that an Eighth Circuit local rule, which authorized nonpublication of opinions and explicitly stated that unpublished opinions were to have no precedential effect, was unconstitutional. The panel, in an opinion by Judge Richard S. Arnold, reasoned that a court rule purporting to confer upon appellate judges an absolute power to decide which decisions would be binding and which would not be binding went well beyond the “judicial power” within the meaning of Article III of …

Selected Economic Implications And Policy Aspects Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Evert Van Der Sluis, Matthew Diersen, Thomas Dobbs Oct 2001

Selected Economic Implications And Policy Aspects Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Evert Van Der Sluis, Matthew Diersen, Thomas Dobbs

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The paper provides an overview of the types of economic costs, benefits, and risks involved with agricultural biotechnology at the farm level, at the market level, and for the farm and food system as a whole. Both advantages and disadvantages of agricultural biotechnology are discussed. Among the drivers of the US domestic and international consumer demand for transgenic crop products discussed in the paper are environmental and food safety concerns. A comparison is made between a 'science-based' regulatory framework and a policy based on the precautionary principle. The authors argue that open dialogue is needed for achieving improved public understanding …

SETTING: The ladies’ parlour of a wayside inn in ——shire, England. Sometime in the early 1800s. A sofa, three chairs and two small tables are grouped companionably before the upstage fireplace with mantel. A door stage right leads to the garden and a door to the left leads into the inn.
NOTE: During the dream sequences, the major character plays an older version of herself while the other ladies don small accessories and play the other characters in the dream. The furniture is slightly rearranged to suggest a different room.

The Evolution Of Aesthetic Response In Honors Students, Tammy Ostrander Oct 2001

The Evolution Of Aesthetic Response In Honors Students, Tammy Ostrander

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In many college courses, the goal of teaching is to convey content so that the students in the course can become literate in a certain discipline. In such courses, the students learn information with which to answer questions appropriate to the field of study. In a course on the arts, however, the goal may not be answering the questions, but asking them. Due to the philosophical nature of the question ‘What is Art?’ for example, faculty members teaching a course on the arts need to realize that students may never fully grasp the concept of what art is. A nonetheless …

Review Of Reclaiming Indigenous Voice And Vision Edited By Marie Battiste, Dennis Martinez Oct 2001

Review Of Reclaiming Indigenous Voice And Vision Edited By Marie Battiste, Dennis Martinez

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The eighteen essays collected in Reclaiming Indigenous Voice and Vision provide, finally and in one volume, a substantive and reasonably comprehensive analysis by the first generation of Indigenous scholars of the present and future role of Indigenous Knowledge and the emerging Indigenous cultural renaissance in the global context of neocolonial Western culture and science. The book springs from an International Summer Institute at the University of Saskatchewan on the cultural restoration of oppressed Indigenous peoples held in 1996 and attended by mostly Indigenous scholars from Canada, the US, India, and New Zealand.

This is not yet another book, produced by …

The Earth Says Have A Place William Stafford And A Place Of Language, Thomas Fox Averill Oct 2001

The Earth Says Have A Place William Stafford And A Place Of Language, Thomas Fox Averill

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the spring of 1986, my daughter was almost four years old and my wife and I were to have poet William Stafford to dinner during a visit he made to Washburn University. I searched for a short Stafford poem our daughter might memorize as a welcome and a tribute. We came across this simple gem, and she spoke it to him at the table.

Later in his visit, Stafford told a story about "Note." He traveled extensively all over the world. Once, in Pakistan, he opened his bags for a customs official. "Books," the man observed. "I am a …

Land, Justice, And Angie Debo Telling The Truth To-And About-Your Neighbors, Patricia Nelson Limerick

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

When Angie Debo was an old woman, she lived in her hometown of Marshall, Oklahoma, where she had warm and close ties with her neighbors. She also had a more geographically dispersed network: a list of several hundred people, scattered around the nation, whom she would mobilize to write senators and congressmen, or to the president, on behalf of particular campaigns for Indian rights. She sent the members of her network mimeographed letters and in urgent circumstances made phone calls to them. She got her network geared up to write in support of Alaskan Native land claims, an enlargement of …

Review Of Sex In The Heartland By Beth Bailey, Julia Ehrhardt Oct 2001

Review Of Sex In The Heartland By Beth Bailey, Julia Ehrhardt

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In her thorough analysis of six separate but interconnected historical episodes that signpost the "sexual revolution" in the university town of Lawrence, Kansas, from 1945 to 1975, Beth Bailey strives to identify the complicated factors that changed sex for good in America during the postwar period. Bailey argues that the sexual revolution has been erroneously characterized as a rapid transformation of sexual ideology that occurred first in large cities and then spread to smaller towns. Instead, the author claims that the "revolution" was actually a gradual re-evaluation of sexual mores influenced by government policies, the mass market, popular culture, technology, …

Influence Of Habitat On Distribution And Abundance Of The Eastern Woodrat In Kansas, Jon P. Beckmann, Glennis A. Kaufman, Donald W. Kaufman Oct 2001

Influence Of Habitat On Distribution And Abundance Of The Eastern Woodrat In Kansas, Jon P. Beckmann, Glennis A. Kaufman, Donald W. Kaufman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Anthropogenic modification of native woodlands and grasslands in the Great Plains has altered the abundance and distribution of many species of mammals. To study habitat effects on the eastern woodrat (Neotoma floridana), we surveyed nests of the eastern woodrat in woodlands, grasslands, and croplands along 77 km of secondary roads in three counties in north-central Kansas. All nests were located in woodlands ( < 2 %of habitat), although grasslands and croplands constituted 36% and 62% of habitat surveyed, respectively. In our survey, nests were associated positively with shelterbelts (3.6 nests per 100 m of road edge) but not with shrub patches (1.1 nests per 100 m of road edge) or riparian woodlands (0.3 nests per 100 m of road edge). Consequently, we specifically censused nests in an additional 12 riparian woodlands and 12 shelterbelts. Nests of eastern woodrats were less dense in riparian woodlands (9.4 nests/ha) than in shelterbelts (55.5 nests/ha). Density of woodrat nests decreased as width of a wooded area increased. Further, nests per 100 m of length of woodland did not increase as the width of woodland increased. These patterns suggest that woodland edge, not woodland interior, is the primary factor in abundance of eastern woodrats in this region. Although the eastern woodrat has previously been considered a woodland species, our results suggest that this assessment is incorrect. Our observations demonstrate that anthropogenic modification of the Great Plains, in the form of planted shelterbelts and expanded riparian woodland, likely has increased the distribution and abundance of eastern woodrats, compared to the mid-1800s.

Invisible Markets Netting Visible Results: When Sub-Prime Lending Becomes Predatory, Cassandra Jones Havard Oct 2001

Invisible Markets Netting Visible Results: When Sub-Prime Lending Becomes Predatory, Cassandra Jones Havard

All Faculty Scholarship

In this article, I argue that Ellison's metaphor of social invisibility—the societal undervaluing of minorities—is analogous to economic invisibility—the denial of fair access to credit to minorities. I then use the metaphor of invisibility as a basis for understanding the contemporary legal problem of predatory lending, or making credit available to borrowers at unreasonably high interest rates. Disguised as credit access to high-risk, underserved borrowers, predatory lending helps to create risk by offering borrowers products that do not adequately measure risk and that are not fairly priced.
