The Influence Of Retention Intervals And Warning Signals On Prospective Memory., Michael Andrew Sarapata Jan 2001

The Influence Of Retention Intervals And Warning Signals On Prospective Memory., Michael Andrew Sarapata

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prospective memory, memory for future events, is used for remembering duties and obligations that all people must complete. Past research has contributed to our understanding of the bases of prospective memory tasks (time versus event) and the kinds of situations requiring prospective memory (appointments, chores, deadlines, and medications). However, research has yet to examine how prospective remembering unfolds over time. For example, very little is known about how such remembering is affected by the time from when the task is encoded to the time that a task must be conducted (the retention interval), the length of the time in which …

Denial And Locus Of Control In Cardiac Rehabilitation, Jami Barto Hoxmeier Jan 2001

Denial And Locus Of Control In Cardiac Rehabilitation, Jami Barto Hoxmeier

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Denial is a defense mechanism cardiac patients use to cope with the trauma of a cardiac event. Empirical findings document positive and negative effects of denial on cardiac patients' health and health-promoting behavior. Theoretical models of stress and coping suggest denial can interfere with health-promoting behavior when individuals are in control of variables affecting their health. This study addressed the research question: What effect do denial and internal locus of control have on exercise adherence and physiological gains in cardiac rehabilitation? One hundred-thirty patients in an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program completed the Cardiac Denial of Impact Scale, the Multidimensional Health …

The sample of ACOAs utilized for this study was recruited from undergraduatePsychology courses at a state university in the Pacific Northwest. Two hundred and seventy-five participants completed questionnaires; however, only 105 individuals met inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. The following null hypothesis was tested by a stepwise canonical discriminant analysis: No subset of perceived family environment variables (cohesion, expressiveness, conflict, organization, and …

The Impact Of Creative Problem Solving For Generaleducation Intervention Teams On Team Members' Ratings Of Treatment Acceptability, Jennifer L. Grimes Jan 2001

The Impact Of Creative Problem Solving For Generaleducation Intervention Teams On Team Members' Ratings Of Treatment Acceptability, Jennifer L. Grimes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many states require or recommend school-based, problem-solving teams in an effort to develop interventions to address student and teacher needs. Often these teams have not been trained in a structured problem-solving process, which is thought to improve the quality of interventions developed by a team. Creative Problem Solving (CPS) is a problem-solving process developed from creativity and cognitivePsychology literature and has been found to increase team effectiveness. CPS has been modified for use with school-based, problem-solving teams, which are called GeneralEducation Intervention (GEI) teams in the state of Indiana, to assist in developing quality interventions. This modified process is called …

Proximate And Ultimate Factors Contributing To The Variation In A Sexually Dimorphic Signal In Sceloporus Lizards, Vanessa S. Quinn Jan 2001

Proximate And Ultimate Factors Contributing To The Variation In A Sexually Dimorphic Signal In Sceloporus Lizards, Vanessa S. Quinn

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Animals communicate in many different ways using a variety of signals to send information to conspecifics and heterospecifics. These systems consist of at least two individuals, signalers and receivers. Signalers produce and physiologically control the production of signals and send the signal into the environment. Receivers obtain signals via sensory receptors, process information in the central nervous system, and respond in some manner. Selective forces could act on any one, or a combination of, these factors to lead to sex and species differences. Thus, to properly study the evolution of these systems, evolutionary biologists must examine multiple levels. I have …

Towards Comparative Profiling Of Parallel Applications With Pperfdb, Christian Leland Hansen Jan 2001

Towards Comparative Profiling Of Parallel Applications With Pperfdb, Christian Leland Hansen

Dissertations and Theses

Due to the complex nature of parallel programming, it is difficult to diagnose and solve performance related problems. Knowledge of program behavior is obtained experimentally, with repeated runs of a slightly modified version of the application or the same code in different environments. In these circumstances, comparative performance analysis can provide meaningful insights into the subtle effects of system and code changes on parallel program behavior by highlighting the difference in performance results across executions.

I have designed and implemented modules which extend the PPerfDB performance tool to allow access to existing performance data generated by several commonly used tracing …

Post-Test Implementation Of Twntn4a Correction Code At O.3m Tct, Ryuichi Machida Jan 2001

Post-Test Implementation Of Twntn4a Correction Code At O.3m Tct, Ryuichi Machida

Theses

Airfoil characteristics measured in a wind tunnel typically differ from those obtained in free air due to the confinement of airflow in tunnel test sections and the development of boundary layer on tunnel walls. Wind tunnel measured quantities, e.g. Mach number, Reynolds number, angle of attack, require corrections to determine their equivalent values in free air. TWNTN4A is a correction program capable of correcting wall interference effects in 2-D wind tunnels. TWNTN4A was applied to correct over 300 data files obtained from tests performed in 0.3m Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel (TCT) at NASA Langley. Data describe Mach number range of 0.50 …

Juror Comprehension And Complexity: Strategies To Enhance Understanding, Mark Findlay Jan 2001

Juror Comprehension And Complexity: Strategies To Enhance Understanding, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Recent law reform debate proposes the complexity of trials as generally reducing juror comprehension. This in turn is said to impact on the accuracy of the verdict. The empirical studies of three very different jury systems examined in detail in the paper challenge these assumptions against problematic measures of complexity. Critics of the jury, particularly in commercial fraud trials, often take the issue of trial complexity as a given. The studies demonstrate that features of the trial which trouble jurors in terms of concentration, comprehension and decision making are consistent, while often specific to the trial and interrelated. The paper …

Rationalising Restitutionary Damages In Contract Law: An Elusive Or Illusory Ques, Andrew Phang, Pey Woan Lee Jan 2001

Rationalising Restitutionary Damages In Contract Law: An Elusive Or Illusory Ques, Andrew Phang, Pey Woan Lee

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The present article surveys various issues in the law relating to the award of restitutionary damages in contract law, utilising as its point of focus the recent House of Lords decision in Attorney-General v Blake. It explores, in particular, two possible (albeit quite different) routes towards the recovery of such damages; the first based on the (more traditional) compensatory basis and the second on the (more controversial) restitutionary basis for disgorgement of the defendant's gain. While we argue that there is, on a more general level, no overriding objection in principle to the award of restitutionary damages for cynical breach …

The Statutory Derivative Action In Singapore: A Critical And Comparative Examination, Pearlie Koh Jan 2001

The Statutory Derivative Action In Singapore: A Critical And Comparative Examination, Pearlie Koh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As a mechanism for shareholder control of corporate wrongs and thus as a tool of corporate governance, the statutory derivative action has had much international attention given to it, particularly in the last 10 years. Singapore introduced its statutory derivative action in 1993 and since then, there have been two reported cases in which the action was invoked. In this paper, I consider the Singapore derivative action as contained in sections 216A and 216B of the Singapore Companies Act. The approach taken is a comparative one as I also look at the statutory derivative actions in Australia and other common …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Vanilla is a very important flavouring agent, it is used as a major ingredient in a number of food products. The taste and aroma results from a specific blend of components present in the extract. There are over 170 volatile components, which all contribute to the flavour of the extract. These volatile components can be present in trace amounts or in relatively high concentrations. The range and concentration of volatile components is somewhat characteristic of the vanilla extract and its origin. Due to the high cost and low availability of natural extract, nature-identical and synthetic flavourings are often used to …

History, Culture And Alcohol: Drinking Patterns In Poland And Australia, Barbara Wolska

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

It is a widely held view in Poland that for centuries those in power have promoted heavy drinking among their subjects in order to achieve their various goals and that this contributed to the development of Polish drinking patterns. There is some empirical evidence that the political economy of alcohol in Poland promoted heavy drinking among the Polish population. Drinking alcohol in Poland was an important aspect of social situations. The most popular beverage was vodka(s). Social pressure to drink in the extreme was attributed to the tradition of hospitality. Cultural norms encouraged very heavy drinking among men and imposed …

Monday Morning And The Millennium : Cultural Studies, Scepticism And The Concept Of Power, Mark Gibson Jan 2001

Monday Morning And The Millennium : Cultural Studies, Scepticism And The Concept Of Power, Mark Gibson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The thesis examines the use or the concept of power in cultural studies, offering a revisionist perspective on the history or this use. The dominant approach to questions or power in the field, it is argued, is a 'rationalist' one: the various phenomena comprehended under the concept are conceived ultimately as instances or the one phenomenon. This approach implies that positions in relation to power share a common referent allowing them to be assessed according to general criteria of 'correctness' or theoretical adequacy. It also allows developments in debates around power to be represented in terms or a narrative or …

To Release Or Not To Release That Is The Question: A Phenomenological Study Of Western Australian Government Freedom Of Information Coordinators, Graham Harnwell Jan 2001

To Release Or Not To Release That Is The Question: A Phenomenological Study Of Western Australian Government Freedom Of Information Coordinators, Graham Harnwell

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study explores the issues that impact on Western Australian State Government Freedom of Information Coordinators who, within the framework of the Freedom of Information Act (1992), manage requests from the public to access agency held documents. A literature review identified two bodies of material. One extolling FOI, the other arguing that some agency personnel have not accepted, and are actively resisting, the concept of FOI. Using a phenomenological approach, eight Coordinators narrated the issues that impact on their roles and decision-making processes. Themes were identified, analysed and reported in the context of the broader FOI environment. This research found …

A Pilot Study Of An Employee Developed Observational Tool As A Valid And Reliable Measure Of Organisational Safety, Matthew Wallace Jan 2001

A Pilot Study Of An Employee Developed Observational Tool As A Valid And Reliable Measure Of Organisational Safety, Matthew Wallace

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Given the increasing high social and economic costs of occupational injury and illness to the Australian community, identification of initiatives to reduce the burden is urgently required. Paramount to reversing this trend is the need to identify and address the causes of the injury and illness. Employee involvement in occupational health and safety has for some time been espoused as an essential element in any occupational health and safety program, but its relationship with safety performance still remains unexplored. Although various theories suggest that the involvement of employees will increase their sense of ownership, there is little research to suggest …

Financial Intermediation And Economic Performance In Zimbabwe, Gift Chirozva Jan 2001

Financial Intermediation And Economic Performance In Zimbabwe, Gift Chirozva

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Financial literature is replete with theoretical and empirical evidence suggesting financial development has a causal effect on economic growth. Yet there is no consensus on the finance-growth nexus. The direction of causality is still controversial In fact, classical economists argue that financial factors are neutral and hence cannot have real effects. Critics argue the traditional methods of identifying long run economic relationships fail to address the methodological conflict between equilibrium implied by theory and the disequilibria in the data. The rise of new representation techniques such as the General Methods of Moments (GMM) and vector autoregression [VAR] brought with them …
