Housing Industry : Problems And Prospects, Hoong Jun Lim Jan 2001

Housing Industry : Problems And Prospects, Hoong Jun Lim

Student Works (2000-2009)

The economic downturn in the mid-1997 had definitely affected the housing industry. The oversupply especially in the commercial sector had affected many developers and financial institutions. Non-Performance-Loans had soared up. Housing projects delayed in completion, and worst, abandoned. Of course, oversupply is only one major problem facing the housing industry. On the other hand, the problem of low-cost housing for the poor, striving hard by both the private and the public sectors, only ended up never enough to meet the demands. Sometimes, there is no demand because of wrong locality (mismatch). During the 6th Malaysia Plan (1991-1995), only about 75 …

White Dwarfs In Common Proper Motion Binary Systems: Mass Distribution And Kinematics, Nicole M. Silvestri, Terry D. Oswalt, Matt A. Wood, J. Allyn Smith, I. Neill Reid, Edward M. Sion Jan 2001

White Dwarfs In Common Proper Motion Binary Systems: Mass Distribution And Kinematics, Nicole M. Silvestri, Terry D. Oswalt, Matt A. Wood, J. Allyn Smith, I. Neill Reid, Edward M. Sion

Publications

We present the mass distribution, gravitational redshifts, radial velocities, and space motions of white dwarf stars in common proper motion binary systems. The mass distribution we derive for the 41 DA white dwarfs in this study has a mean of 0.68 ± 0.04 MꙨ. This distribution has a slightly higher mean and larger dispersion than most previous white dwarf studies. We hypothesize that this is due to a higher fraction of cool (average Teff ̴ 10,000 K), hence old, white dwarfs in our sample. Our results indicate that samples made up of predominantly cool, old white dwarf stars …

Gustav Mahler - Conductor As Interpreter: A Comprehensive Study Of The Bach-Mahler Suite For Orchestra, Bryce Mara Seliger Jan 2001

Gustav Mahler - Conductor As Interpreter: A Comprehensive Study Of The Bach-Mahler Suite For Orchestra, Bryce Mara Seliger

Theses and Dissertations

This document is an examination of Mahler's contributions to the discipline of conducting through the Retuschen he made of other composers' works. Chapter 1 is an overview of Mahler's ideas on what interpretive responsibilities a conductor faces when he/she conducts other composers' music. It explores how his changes to other composers' scores give us a valuable glimpse of Mahler's own sense of interpretation as well as documents the nineteenth-century approach to performance practice.

Chapter 2 is a study of the history of Retuschen-making and how these modifications made by conductors exemplify a nineteenth-century attitude towards the music of the past. …

The Politics Of Judicial Reform In Japan: The Rule Of Law At Last?, Setsuo Miyazawa Jan 2001

The Politics Of Judicial Reform In Japan: The Rule Of Law At Last?, Setsuo Miyazawa

Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the most recent changes in Japan's political environment that could radically alter its judicial system and legal profession in the near future. Reform of the judicial system and legal profession has now been placed on the national agenda, and the cast of players involved has spread from the traditional groups of legal professionals (judges, prosecutors, and attorneys) to the major actors of the larger political process, namely the Liberal Democratic Party (Jiya Minshu T6) ("LDP"), the ruling conservative party, and the Federation of Economic Organizations (Keidanren), one of the most influential organizations …

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

Murray Weidenbaum attempts to clarify many of the myths involving globalization, such as job loss, do sanctions work, is the U.S. the only country that does not use protectionism, and whether American companies doing business overseas pollute their environments due to less strict regulations.

Implementing Portfolio Assessment In Grade Four, Marilyn L. Browder Jan 2001

Implementing Portfolio Assessment In Grade Four, Marilyn L. Browder

Graduate Research Papers

Writing is a process. To assess this process, it needs to be described through qualitative techniques. One of these techniques is portfolio collection: Writing · . exhibits, collected over time, can facilitate students' self-reflections on their writing activity, interests, progress, and instructional needs. Such a collection is also valuable evidence for teachers in planning and maintaining their language programs and in reporting to caregivers.

This project involved the implementation of portfolio assessment in grade four by a first-year teacher. Through portfolio collection, the teacher as well as the students received much information that promoted writing and led to much interest …

Motivational Barriers : Technology Use By Minorities, Laura Dayton Jan 2001

Motivational Barriers : Technology Use By Minorities, Laura Dayton

Graduate Research Papers

This research paper reviews motivational factors that affect the use of technology by minorities. The technology gap is taking a toll on individuals, communities, and Society at large. Sixty percent of jobs require skills with technology. Students with limited or no access to computers are falling behind in developing skills that are needed in college and in the job market. This lack of infrastructure strikes some as particularly worrisome because it comes at a time when the federal government is forcing individuals and communities to become more self-sufficient. The research cited in this paper addresses the existence of a digital …

Meeting The Social And Emotional Needs Of Gifted And Talented Students, Angela Germaine Jan 2001

Meeting The Social And Emotional Needs Of Gifted And Talented Students, Angela Germaine

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this review ofliterature was to identify the major problems gifted and talented children may face in social and emotional adjustments and how to cope with these adjustments. It also sought to document strategies by which the social and emotional needs of gifted and talented students may be met in the classroom and to delineate possible interventions that can improve their academic achievement. The review and analysis of literature revealed that two major social and emotional needs of gifted and talented students are self-discovery and an assurance that they are understood and accepted. Suggested interventions focused on the …

Alternate Curriculum In Reading For Grade 4, Carolyn M. Wiezorek Jan 2001

Alternate Curriculum In Reading For Grade 4, Carolyn M. Wiezorek

Graduate Research Papers

Academically gifted students are in every classroom. They have a right to be challenged all day, every day. Most curriculum is aimed at the average student, leaving gifted students bored and unchallenged. It is the school's responsibility to meet the needs of these academically gifted students. By differentiating content, process, product and learning environment, teachers can enrich, challenge and better meet the needs of all students. Our district is in the process of creating alternate units for our elementary language arts program. The sixth grade is complete and a team is working on the fifth grade units. Two other teachers …

Meaning, Intention, And The Hearsay Rule., Paul F. Kirgis Jan 2001

Meaning, Intention, And The Hearsay Rule., Paul F. Kirgis

Faculty Law Review Articles

In this Article, I draw on insights from the linguistic discipline of pragmatics to offer another way to understand and apply the definition of hearsay in the Federal Rules of Evidence. Pragmatics is concerned with how we use language in real-world contexts to accomplish various objectives.' By identifying the conventions that govern language usage, pragmatics provides ways to analyze what a speaker means when he says something and how meaning is conveyed through language.5 Pragmatics thus has obvious utility for the study of hearsay.

The philosopher Paul Grice looms over the field of pragmatics. His theory of conversational implicature revolutionized …

An Efficient Instruction Cache Scheme For Object-Oriented Languages, Yul Chu, M. R. Ito Jan 2001

An Efficient Instruction Cache Scheme For Object-Oriented Languages, Yul Chu, M. R. Ito

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present an efficient cache scheme, which can considerably reduce instruction cache misses caused by procedure call/returns. This scheme employs N-way banks and XOR mapping functions. The main function of this scheme is to place a group of instructions separated by a call instruction into a bank according to the initial and final bank selection mechanisms. After the initial bank selection mechanism selects a bank on an instruction cache miss, the final bank selection mechanism will determine the final bank for updating a cache line as a correction mechanism. These two mechanisms can guarantee that recent groups of instructions exist …

The Isaiah Passages In The Book Of Mormon: A Non-Aligned Text, Carol F. Ellertson Jan 2001

The Isaiah Passages In The Book Of Mormon: A Non-Aligned Text, Carol F. Ellertson

Theses and Dissertations

Since the advent of the Dead Sea Scrolls, four biblical textual scholars have emerged at the forefront of the dialogue concerning textual evolution. They are: Frank Moore Cross, Emanuel Tov, Shemaryahu Talmon and Eugene Ulrich. Though there is some overlap in their hypotheses, each scholar has put forth a framework of biblical textual development in light of these new discoveries.

If a new biblical text were discovered today, how would each scholar approach it? This thesis evaluates each scholars' views and concludes that Emanuel Tov's criteria for judging a newly discovered text is the most thorough and explanatory. Tov's views …

A Case Of The Philips Curve In The Formation Of A Monetary Union: A Glimpse At High Inflation Countries Of The European Monetary Union, Yuet Wen Wan Jan 2001

A Case Of The Philips Curve In The Formation Of A Monetary Union: A Glimpse At High Inflation Countries Of The European Monetary Union, Yuet Wen Wan

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This paper examines how disinflation in high inflation economies affects unemployment levels. According to Keynesian macroeconomic theories, a decrease in inflation will cause an increase in unemployment in the short run. Due to high inflation over the years among countries like Italy and Ireland, their expected inflation rate is significantly high. As a result, when the government starts a process of disinflation though restrictive fiscal and monetary policies, economic activity declines, and significant short run increase in unemployment follows.

Eddy Structures Induced Within A Wedge By A Honing Circular Arc, C. P. Hills Jan 2001

Eddy Structures Induced Within A Wedge By A Honing Circular Arc, C. P. Hills

Articles

In this paper we outline an expeditious numerical procedure to calculate the Stokes flow in a corner due to the rotation of a scraping circular boundary. The method is also applicable to other wedge geometries. We employ a collocation technique utilising a basis of eddy (similarity) functions introduced by Moffatt (1964) that allows us to satisfy automatically the governing equations for the streamfunction and all the boundary conditions on the surface of the wedge. The circular honing problem thereby becomes one-dimensional requiring only the satisfaction of conditions on the circular boundary. The advantage of using the Moffatt eddy functions as …

Eddies Induced In Cylindrical Containers By A Rotating End Wall, Christopher Hills Jan 2001

Eddies Induced In Cylindrical Containers By A Rotating End Wall, Christopher Hills

Articles

The flow generated in a viscous liquid contained in a cylindrical geometry by a rotating end wall is considered. Recent numerical and experimental work has established several distinct phases of the motion when fluid inertia plays a significant role. The current paper, however, establishes the nature of the flow in the thus far neglected low Reynolds number regime. Explicitly, by employing biorthogonality relations appropriate to the current geometry, it is shown that a sequence of exponentially decaying eddies extends outward from the rotating end wall. The cellular structure is a manifestation of the dominance of complex eigensolutions to the homogeneous …

Strategic Drivers Of Software Quality: Beyond External And Internal Software Quality, Ronan Fitzpatrick Jan 2001

Strategic Drivers Of Software Quality: Beyond External And Internal Software Quality, Ronan Fitzpatrick

Conference papers

Software quality is often considered in terms of the contractual requirements between the supplier and acquirer as described in ISO/IEC 12207 and focuses on software life cycle processes. However, beyond these processes acquirer organisations need to address other issues like complying with new legislation, securing return on investment, and achieving competitive support from their new software investments. Supplier organisations also have issues that they must manage. This paper addresses all of these issues and presents eleven issues, which it calls strategic drivers. Then, using the SOFTWARE QUALITY STAR, builds a new conceptual model where each strategic quality driver is defined …

Applying Event-Condition-Action Mechanism In Healthcare: A Computerised Clinical Test-Ordering Protocol System (Tops), Bing Wu, Kudakwashe Dube

Conference papers

This paper addresses issues of the active database application in the challenging healthcare area: the management and execution of computerised clinical practice guidelines/protocols. The problem of how to efficiently and effectively quey and manipulate the computerised clinical protocols/guidelines has posed a major challenge but received little research attention until very recently. By proposing a declarative modelling language (PLAN) with an Event-Condition-Action (ECA) mechanism for clinical test-ordering protocols, and an automatic mapping and management system (TOPS), this paper addresses this issue, in an important medical domain, from a unified approach based on an active rule mechanism. The work presented in this …
