Racial Profiling: A Status Report Of The Legal, Legislative, And Empirical Literature, Katheryn Russell-Brown Jan 2001

Racial Profiling: A Status Report Of The Legal, Legislative, And Empirical Literature, Katheryn Russell-Brown

UF Law Faculty Publications

In recent years, there have been several widely-publicized cases in which racial profiling became police brutality. As well, there have been scores of famous Black men who have offered their personal accounts as victims of racial profiling. All of these have helped to propel the issue onto the nation's front burner. The varied responses to racial profiling indicate the range of groups affected by and concerned about the practice. Notably, this includes former President Bill Clinton, who shared his belief that racial profiling is a national problem. The issue of racial profiling has evoked a wide range of policy responses, …

Anoxia Tolerance And Recovery In Freshwater And Marine Turtles, Malia Lois Schwartz Jan 2001

Anoxia Tolerance And Recovery In Freshwater And Marine Turtles, Malia Lois Schwartz

Open Access Dissertations

Anoxia tolerance and recovery in freshwater and marine turtles were investigated. This study quantified several factors thought to influence anoxia tolerance and recovery, including body size, feeding history, season, the turtle's sex, and repetitive entrapment. In Chrysemys picta bellii, body size had little effect on anoxic metabolism, although small turtles regained normal behavior more rapidly and exhibited no lag in lactate clearance. Feeding history also had little effect on anoxia tolerance, but turtles that had recently fed recovered more slowly than fasted animals. There were no differences between the sexes in anoxia tolerance; however, females recovered faster behaviorally. The lack …

Combining Multiple Representations For Pen-Based Handwritten Digit Recognition, Fevzi̇ Ali̇moğlu, Ethem Alpaydin Jan 2001

Combining Multiple Representations For Pen-Based Handwritten Digit Recognition, Fevzi̇ Ali̇moğlu, Ethem Alpaydin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We investigate techniques to combine multiple representations of a handwritten digit to increase classification accuracy without significantly increasing system complexity or recognition time. In pen-based recognition, the input is the dynamic movement of the pentip over the pressure sensitive tablet. There is also the image formed as a result of this movement. On a real-world database of handwritten digits containing more than 11,000 handwritten digits, we notice that the two multi-layer perceptron (MLP) based classifiers using these representations make errors on different patterns implying that a suitable combination of the two would lead to higher accuracy. We implement and compare …

Turf: An Eye-Witness Account Of The Sovereign Sensitivities Of The Un Human Rights Committee, Craig M. Scott

Articles & Book Chapters

In late March 1998, the author was present, as an observer, at a Human Rights Committee meeting at the United Nations in New York during which attention was drawn to an unofficial written statement drafted by the 1997- 1998 Chairperson of the Chairpersons (Philip Alston, then-Chairperson of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights). The Human Rights Committee members understood the statement had been delivered verbatim the day before to the Commission on Human Rights by Alston on behalf of the Chairpersons. That statement was intended to inform the Commission of the Chairpersons’ latest views as contained in their …

A Multi-Proxy Study Of Planktonic Foraminifera To Identify Past Millenial -Scale Climate Variability In The East Asian Monsoon And The Western Pacific Warm Pool, Stephanie Dannenmann Jan 2001

A Multi-Proxy Study Of Planktonic Foraminifera To Identify Past Millenial -Scale Climate Variability In The East Asian Monsoon And The Western Pacific Warm Pool, Stephanie Dannenmann

Geology Theses and Dissertations

High resolution paleo-climatological data from IMAGES core MD97-2141 (8.80°N, 121.31°E) located in the Sulu Sea within the western tropical Pacific reveal the first evidence of continuous millennial-scale variability in surface ocean conditions over the last 150,000 years. The millennial-scale planktonic foraminiferal oxygen isotope (δ18O) oscillations of Globigerinoides ruber (G. ruber) between 30,000–65,000 years (MIS3) are apparently in-phase with the Greenland ice core record and have amplitudes 1/3 to 2/3 the size of the Sulu Sea glacial-interglacial δ 18O amplitude of 1.3‰. In the same interval variations in planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca suggest that millennial-scale sea surface temperature (SST) variations were small …
